Zuckerberg Testimony: The Creepy Factor - Who Owns Your Data On Facebook? — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00well Mark Zuckerberg has completed his
- 0:03testimony to Congress and I thought I'd
- 0:06take a moment to kind of clarify what I
- 0:07think is one of the more disingenuous
- 0:10things that came up in his testimony and
- 0:12this is this idea of who owns your data
- 0:16on Facebook so there's four points I
- 0:19want to make here so
- 0:23the first point is sort of this idea
- 0:27that there's data on Facebook and so
- 0:31Zuckerberg would say well you post
- 0:33pictures and you control your pictures
- 0:35on there this' there's this data on
- 0:37facebook and that's true that's data but
- 0:42that's not exactly what the controversy
- 0:44is about and he was being pretty
- 0:47disingenuous about explaining this to
- 0:49the average person
- 0:55so point number two is what do
- 1:00advertisers do or what did Cambridge
- 1:03analytic could do with this information
- 1:04so part of it was Cambridge analytic
- 1:06they sort of stole this data they stole
- 1:08your email they sold your friend's email
- 1:10etc right but the more interesting issue
- 1:13is that advertisers slice and dice this
- 1:17data about you so like if you like
- 1:20safely or you like Whole Foods or you
- 1:22like the Donald Trump political stuff on
- 1:25Facebook or you like the Hillary Clinton
- 1:28website or page on Facebook right that
- 1:31tells advertisers a lot about you and
- 1:35it's this metadata about you that's
- 1:38interesting and useful and that's what
- 1:40Facebook makes its money off of so they
- 1:43make conclusions are you a man are you a
- 1:45woman are you a Trump boat or are you a
- 1:48Hillary Clinton voter are you black are
- 1:50you wide right there was a whole
- 1:51controversy about racial profiling when
- 1:54it came to selling houses in using ads
- 1:57on Facebook right it's not that data
- 1:59that you can download that Zuckerberg
- 2:03was talking about that's the problem
- 2:05it's the metadata and the way this can
- 2:07be manipulated and somebody can infer
- 2:09and learn a lot about you so that's the
- 2:12second point this manipulation of the
- 2:15data this metadata that's extracted from
- 2:17the data that's really what Facebook has
- 2:20that's valuable and and that's important
- 2:23and that's the second point and he was
- 2:25very disingenuous to Congress about
- 2:28explaining this
- 2:33the third point is you know sort of
- 2:38what's creepy about this is that is that
- 2:42advertisers then use this data to
- 2:45influence you right I mean it's sort of
- 2:46legitimate in terms of advertising it's
- 2:48certainly things that I teach people how
- 2:50to do is you then make inferences you
- 2:52know people who like Whole Foods also
- 2:54like organic milk so I can sell you more
- 2:57organic milk right there's an inference
- 2:59that goes on there and it's used to
- 3:02persuade you so in terms of the election
- 3:04it would be things like you're a trump
- 3:05voter and you're more likely to show up
- 3:07at the polls or you're an independent
- 3:09and we can sway you to be more of a
- 3:11trump voter or vice versa you're an
- 3:13independent we can sway you to be more
- 3:15of a Hillary Clinton voter right so
- 3:17advertisers income in combination in
- 3:20cahoots with Facebook are using what
- 3:23they know about you right to influence
- 3:27you to do something that they want
- 3:29that's the persuasion and that's the
- 3:30part of it so that's the third component
- 3:33of this controversy over data on
- 3:37Facebook
- 3:41okay and then there's the fourth point
- 3:44what's the fourth point the fourth point
- 3:46is what's creepy about this is that the
- 3:49average person the average Joe Schmo or
- 3:52Jane Schmo they don't understand that
- 3:56when they go on Facebook and they post a
- 3:59picture of a baby bingo I know you're 22
- 4:01years old and you just had a baby or you
- 4:03you know you like Pepsi oh I know you
- 4:06are therefore overweight right they
- 4:09don't know that every little move that
- 4:11they're making on Facebook is being
- 4:13tracked and is giving Facebook and by
- 4:17definition right its advertisers
- 4:20information on you as a person and they
- 4:23can learn a lot about you by kind of
- 4:25snooping on what you're doing and that's
- 4:28what Facebook does and that's sort of
- 4:31what was leaked to Cambridge analytic
- 4:33ethroo the app plus the other
- 4:36information so Zuckerberg stess timoni
- 4:39in summary was disingenuous on this
- 4:42point over what is meant by data on
- 4:46Facebook and whether you own it or don't
- 4:49own it and so yeah you own your pictures
- 4:51or you own your post or you can download
- 4:53your posts but that's not really what's
- 4:55creeping us out what's creeping us out
- 4:57is what they can infer from that data
- 5:00and how they can manipulate us and how I
- 5:02think many people just aren't aware that
- 5:05you're always being watched on Facebook
- 5:09so watch out thank you for watching
