Zombie Outbreak: The Stadium Ep. 1: No Further Admissions (Day 0) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00You have worked at the stadium for 6
- 0:02years.
- 0:03>> [music]
- 0:05>> You have never watched a match from a
- 0:07seat. Today is supposed to be your day
- 0:09off. Sam talked you into covering a
- 0:12shift. He said it would be quiet.
- 0:18Now he has sent a photograph of two
- 0:20coffees. Yours has a finger pointing at
- 0:22it. "Getting cold." The message says.
- 0:25You tell him you are on your way. You
- 0:27are still looking for your other shoe.
- 0:30The bus stops three streets from the
- 0:31stadium. An ambulance stands across both
- 0:34lanes. Two paramedics are bent over
- 0:36someone on the pavement. You send Sam a
- 0:39picture through the window. He replies
- 0:41with another photograph. Your coffee is
- 0:43beside an empty cup now. The person on
- 0:45the pavement sits up. One paramedic
- 0:48falls backwards. The other tries to pull
- 0:50them away. A figure runs between the
- 0:52parked cars, blocking your view. The
- 0:54driver tells everybody to stay seated.
- 0:57He steps into the road. You see him
- 0:59hurry towards the ambulance. He does not
- 1:01come back. The woman in the green coat
- 1:03stands first. Nobody stops her at the
- 1:06door. You pick up your bag and follow
- 1:08the others out, keeping to the opposite
- 1:10pavement. From here, you can walk to
- 1:12work. The guard looks through the
- 1:14window. "You know you're late?" You tell
- 1:16him about the ambulance. He glances at
- 1:18his radio, then draws back the inside
- 1:20bolt. Sam is waiting with your coffee.
- 1:23He has written late on the lid. You ask
- 1:26what happened to quiet. "Give it an
- 1:28hour. They'll send us home." You take a
- 1:30sip. It's his. Two sugars. He swaps the
- 1:33cups before you can complain. Your
- 1:35supervisor meets you at the concourse
- 1:37doors. She needs the entrance kept
- 1:39clear. Outside, a family is waiting
- 1:41where the ticket queue should be. There
- 1:43is no match today.
- 1:47The first arrivals have coats on over
- 1:49their night clothes. Police woke them at
- 1:516:00. Their street has been closed. A
- 1:54man carries a little girl with one bare
- 1:56foot. You move a barrier so he can get
- 1:58her through. He asks whether there is
- 2:00somewhere she can sit. You point to the
- 2:02bench beside the pillar. He thanks you
- 2:05as though you have done more than move
- 2:06something.
- 2:07A volunteer starts writing names. Two
- 2:10families become six while she finds
- 2:12another sheet. Sam's phone rings. His
- 2:15mom wants to know whether he is coming
- 2:16home. "Soon," he says. "I'm at work."
- 2:19She asks whether he has remembered her
- 2:21appointment tomorrow. He says yes, then
- 2:24mouths what time at you. You hold up
- 2:26nine fingers. He repeats it back to her.
- 2:29When he hangs up, the queue is past the
- 2:31windows. Your supervisor sends you both
- 2:33outside. Security needs a clear route
- 2:35from the fence to the doors.
- 2:39The chain-link fence runs across the
- 2:41front of the stadium. People are pressed
- 2:43against its outside. Security is letting
- 2:46them through a narrow gate in groups.
- 2:48You and Sam are on the stadium side,
- 2:50moving the barriers back from the doors.
- 2:52A woman asks which entrance takes
- 2:54children. A guard tells her to stay in
- 2:56the queue.
- 2:58Farther along, a man is gripping the
- 2:59mesh. "My daughter's in there. Please,
- 3:02just let me look."
- 3:04He holds up his phone. A photograph of
- 3:06himself with a teenage girl.
- 3:08The guard beside him tells him to step
- 3:10back.
- 3:11The man looks past the uniform and
- 3:12straight at Sam.
- 3:14"You work here. Tell them."
- 3:16Sam lowers his end of the barrier.
- 3:18Before he can answer, the queue moves
- 3:20sideways. Someone at the back is
- 3:22shouting to run. The fence bows towards
- 3:24you. The guard reaches for his weapon.
- 3:27The man with the photograph is still
- 3:28holding the wire.
- 3:31The guard fires. The man drops out of
- 3:33sight. His phone hits the pavement. For
- 3:36a moment, nobody near him moves. Then,
- 3:39people start screaming. Someone pulls at
- 3:41the admission gate. The people already
- 3:43coming through [screaming] keep running
- 3:44towards the building. Sam catches the
- 3:46back of your bag. "Inside." You go with
- 3:49the crowd through the public doors.
- 3:50[screaming]
- 3:53The people nearest the doors push
- 3:55backwards into the concourse. A barrier
- 3:57goes over. The little girl's father
- 3:59disappears behind it. She is standing
- 4:02alone beside the bench. You reach for
- 4:04her just as someone hits your shoulder.
- 4:06Sam pulls you both behind the concrete
- 4:08pillar. You keep hold of the girl's
- 4:10hand.
- 4:11Her father crawls out from under the
- 4:12barrier. You pass her back. He holds her
- 4:15against his chest without standing up.
- 4:18Through the glass, guards are closing
- 4:20the outer gate. People are still against
- 4:22the fence.
- 4:23>> Please move away from the entrance. Keep
- 4:25the central passage clear.
- 4:27>> Sam's coffee is on the floor. His hand
- 4:30is shaking. He was asking for his
- 4:32daughter. You look back towards the
- 4:34doors. The guards are moving people away
- 4:36from the windows.
- 4:38A cleaner leaves to collect her
- 4:39daughter. One of the electricians
- 4:41follows.
- 4:42Your supervisor crosses their names off
- 4:44the sheet and gives their work to
- 4:45whoever is left. You ask when your shift
- 4:48ends. When the next lot gets here.
- 4:50You look at the names she has crossed
- 4:52out. Sam looks at you. Your picture from
- 4:55the bus has still not delivered.
- 4:59By evening, the father and girl have
- 5:01settled beside the pillar. An older
- 5:03woman has an orange blanket around her
- 5:05shoulders.
- 5:06Outside, the same fence is full of
- 5:08people. The admission gate is chained
- 5:10shut.
- 5:11Sam has been trying his mum for 20
- 5:13minutes. You tell him to try from the
- 5:15loading bay. The reception is usually
- 5:17better there.
- 5:18He looks towards the public doors.
- 5:20We should have left when they did.
- 5:24At 9:40, every phone in the concourse
- 5:26sounds at once.
- 5:29You expect another weather warning. Your
- 5:31thumb is already moving to dismiss it.
- 5:34Stay inside. Lock your doors. Do not
- 5:36help the injured.
- 5:38You read the last line again.
- 5:40Sam lowers his phone.
- 5:41What about going home?
- 5:43Across the concourse, the father is
- 5:45reading the same message over his
- 5:47sleeping daughter's head. You look
- 5:49through the doors at the people beyond
- 5:50the fence. Nobody is letting them in.
- 5:53We'd better stay here.
- 5:54Your supervisor sends Sam to the loading
- 5:56bays. There is a delivery outside.
- 5:59Blankets for the people on the floor. He
- 6:01holds up his phone before he goes. I'll
- 6:03try her from there.
- 6:08You hear the crash through the concrete.
- 6:10A worker comes back pushing a half-empty
- 6:12trolley. You ask where Sam is. By the
- 6:15van. I thought he'd come in. You call
- 6:17him. No answer. Your supervisor says
- 6:20security will deal with it. You ask
- 6:22whether anyone has gone out. She turns
- 6:24to somebody else. You leave before she
- 6:26turns back.
- 6:29The guard has his radio pressed against
- 6:31one ear. You tell him Sam is outside.
- 6:34Just the yard, you say. You will be back
- 6:36in a minute. He looks past you before
- 6:38drawing the bolt. Come back this way.
- 6:41I'll be here.
- 6:42Outside, blankets are scattered across
- 6:44the concrete. The service road bends
- 6:46behind the delivery bays. From the door,
- 6:49you cannot see the van. You call Sam
- 6:51again.
- 6:53You stop walking.
- 6:56There, beyond the last delivery bay.
- 6:58You follow it past the lorry. A van sits
- 7:01crooked against a barrier, its driver's
- 7:03door hanging open.
- 7:05A hand presses against the passenger
- 7:07window. Sam. He unlocks the passenger
- 7:10door. You pull it open. "Thought you'd
- 7:12gone home," he says. You ask why he did
- 7:15not call you. He shows you an unsent
- 7:18message, your name above it. When he
- 7:20tries to climb down, his leg gives way.
- 7:23You catch him against the door. His boot
- 7:25is twisted beneath him. "The lorry
- 7:27struck the van," he says. "Someone
- 7:29attacked the driver. Sam tried to get
- 7:31clear and went over on his ankle. He
- 7:33crawled back into the cab." You look
- 7:35through the open driver's door. Nobody
- 7:38is beside it now. "Can we go?" You put
- 7:40his arm across your shoulders. Sam tries
- 7:43to walk. His injured ankle gives way and
- 7:46you catch him. You tell him to keep it
- 7:47off the ground. At the corner of the
- 7:49lorry, you stop so he can adjust his
- 7:51grip.
- 7:52Someone comes out between the parked
- 7:54vehicles. One sleeve hangs loose.
- 7:57They stand looking at the open van.
- 7:59Sam pulls at your shoulder. You move
- 8:02before they turn towards you. The staff
- 8:04door is ahead. You know the guard is
- 8:06behind it. You tell Sam you are nearly
- 8:08there. He nods without looking up.
- 8:13You turn the key back. Try again. The
- 8:15outside lock opens. The bolt holds. You
- 8:19knock. Sam has his head against the
- 8:21wall. You keep a hand under his arm. The
- 8:23guard sees you, then Sam. You explain
- 8:26about the ankle. Tell him to get
- 8:28somebody to help you bring him through.
- 8:30His hand moves down towards the bolt.
- 8:32>> No further admissions. That includes
- 8:34staff.
- 8:35>> The guard stops. He lifts his radio.
- 8:38I've got two of ours at the service
- 8:40store. One's injured. You point to Sam.
- 8:42He can't walk. The guard looks over his
- 8:44shoulder. Sam grips your sleeve. The
- 8:47figure by the vehicles is facing you
- 8:49now. It starts across the yard. Another
- 8:51steps out behind it. You hit the door
- 8:54with the flat of your hand. Open it,
- 8:56please. The guard looks at Sam, then at
- 8:58you.
- 9:00He slides the shutter shut.
