  1. 0:00The searchlight hits the tank. You pull
  2. 0:02her down.
  3. 0:03Day 61. The new voice promised it was
  4. 0:06coming. Ines painted one word across the
  5. 0:09bank roof. Hide. Now somebody below is
  6. 0:12counting the bottles beside your
  7. 0:13shelter.
  8. 0:14>> Tower roof, show your hands. We are here
  9. 0:17to help.
  10. 0:18>> Two living people, a truck, empty drums
  11. 0:21in the back. Neither looks at the bank.
  12. 0:24Both look at your tank. Then the
  13. 0:26infected turn the corner and the truck
  14. 0:28reverses.
  15. 0:31She switches off the radio before it can
  16. 0:33answer itself. You cover the torch.
  17. 0:35Nobody stands above the parapet. They
  18. 0:38did not need a reply to find you. Your
  19. 0:40paint, your lamp, your cargo line did
  20. 0:42that. Three days of food, one partly
  21. 0:45used gas canister, one neighbor you
  22. 0:48still need. At noon, Ines sends a bag
  23. 0:51with no food inside. A note. She
  24. 0:53recognizes the people in the truck.
  25. 0:56After the stadium fell, they charged
  26. 0:58survivors for water. People who could
  27. 1:00not pay stopped coming back. A live
  28. 1:02voice proves somebody is alive. It
  29. 1:05proves nothing else.
  30. 1:08Ines has heard boots on the bank stairs
  31. 1:10twice today. She sends 14 more days of
  32. 1:13food before they return.
  33. 1:15You lower boiled water while she still
  34. 1:17controls the roof.
  35. 1:18Every bag is smaller now. Every trip
  36. 1:21takes longer.
  37. 1:23Two days remaining plus 14 delivered. 16
  38. 1:26days for the two of you.
  39. 1:28In the sack is a plan of the bank
  40. 1:30basement. A service passage crosses
  41. 1:32underneath the street to your tower.
  42. 1:34Ines cleaned it before the locks
  43. 1:36changed. She kept a key. You fold the
  44. 1:38plan inside your scarf. For later.
  45. 1:41The rope moves food. It is not a bridge
  46. 1:44for people.
  47. 1:46On day 64, someone else stands beside
  48. 1:49Ines on the roof. A blue cap. One hand
  49. 1:53on the stair door. He points at your
  50. 1:55tank, then at the empty bottle. Ines
  51. 1:57keeps looking at the scissors beside her
  52. 1:59foot.
  53. 2:00>> Fill the bags with water. Your friend
  54. 2:02stays with us.
  55. 2:03>> She bends as if she is tying on another
  56. 2:06bag. Instead, she puts the scissors
  57. 2:08around the cargo rope. You understand,
  58. 2:11just before she closes the blades. The
  59. 2:13line falls. Ines vanishes through the
  60. 2:15door behind him. He follows. You cannot
  61. 2:18see what happens on the stairs. For the
  62. 2:20first time in 20 days, nothing connects
  63. 2:23you. You have her last delivery. She has
  64. 2:27your last water.
  65. 2:29On day 67, the stove hisses once and
  66. 2:32goes quiet. You saved 72 L of boiled
  67. 2:36water in covered containers. The tank
  68. 2:38still holds thousands of gallons you
  69. 2:40cannot safely drink. Water everywhere.
  70. 2:43Drinking water running out. 11 days of
  71. 2:46food. 72 L safe. No gas. The sunlight
  72. 2:50trick from last week needs actual
  73. 2:52sunlight exposure. 6 hours in suitable
  74. 2:55sun. 2 days when mostly cloudy.
  75. 2:57Prolonged rain is different. These
  76. 2:59bottles are not ready. You mark them
  77. 3:02separately. Guessing would spend your
  78. 3:03safe water twice. Count water you can
  79. 3:06drink. A full tank is not enough.
  80. 3:10The tarpaulin tears at midnight.
  81. 3:13Rain reaches the blankets underneath.
  82. 3:15She tries to fasten her bag. Her fingers
  83. 3:18miss twice.
  84. 3:20Then she asks why you are waiting for
  85. 3:21the bus. You are 34 floors above a
  86. 3:24street with no buses.
  87. 3:26Shivering, clumsy hands, confusion.
  88. 3:30Hypothermia is a medical emergency.
  89. 3:32There is no medical help answering.
  90. 3:35You move her gently inside. The service
  91. 3:37shaft has an access panel one floor
  92. 3:39down. You checked it yesterday. Behind
  93. 3:42it is a maintenance room.
  94. 3:43You carry the dry bundle first, then
  95. 3:46help her down.
  96. 3:47Wet layers off. Dry blankets around her,
  97. 3:50especially her center.
  98. 3:52You sit with her through the night
  99. 3:53watching for changes. By morning she
  100. 3:56knows where she is. Climbing must wait.
  101. 3:59The room is cold. At least it is dry.
  102. 4:02You meant to leave the route when
  103. 4:04somebody rescued you.
  104. 4:07Three days of rest, cold beans, water
  105. 4:10measured before every meal. You leave
  106. 4:13the stove behind. There is no fuel
  107. 4:15anyway. She makes you rest too. Your
  108. 4:18hands shake when you pour. Neither of
  109. 4:20you can carry everything down 33 floors.
  110. 4:23Above you the collectors finally reach
  111. 4:25the roof through the shaft. They find
  112. 4:27the torn shelter and the cut rope. You
  113. 4:30hear their boots through the ceiling.
  114. 4:32Then nothing. You hold the door shut
  115. 4:35until your wrist aches. They know the
  116. 4:37shaft now. Your hiding place has a
  117. 4:39clock.
  118. 4:41Three days of food, 40 liters of safe
  119. 4:44water, no way to refill here. The plan
  120. 4:47says the passage begins behind the
  121. 4:49basement laundry. A plan is a promise
  122. 4:51somebody made before the outbreak. You
  123. 4:54need to see the route before trusting
  124. 4:55it. Food first, then short moves between
  125. 4:58rooms you can shut. One checked landing
  126. 5:00at a time. No blind run down the stairs.
  127. 5:03You scout floor 32 while she waits
  128. 5:05behind the closed panel. The corridor is
  129. 5:07empty. The first flat is not. You hear
  130. 5:10movement inside and leave that door
  131. 5:12alone. The second flat has a kitchen
  132. 5:14cupboard nobody opened.
  133. 5:17Day 78. Your last meal from Enis is
  134. 5:20gone. The low cupboard gives you 12 more
  135. 5:23days at your ration. 48 liters in sealed
  136. 5:26bottles. Nothing needs the dead fridge.
  137. 5:29One tin bulges at both ends. You leave
  138. 5:31it closed. A bulging or leaking can is
  139. 5:34not a food source. 12 days of food. 76
  140. 5:38liters after adding the unopened
  141. 5:39bottles. Some water goes on hands. Soap
  142. 5:42before handling the next meal. A stomach
  143. 5:44illness would make every bottle harder
  144. 5:46to keep down. You cannot carry this haul
  145. 5:48at once. Three quiet trips. By night,
  146. 5:52your home is a cupboard on another
  147. 5:54floor.
  148. 5:56On floor 30, you recognize the flat cap
  149. 5:59before the face.
  150. 6:00Your old neighbor is still standing in
  151. 6:02your kitchen doorway.
  152. 6:03This time, his head turns toward the
  153. 6:05shaft panel. Your bag buckle touched a
  154. 6:08pipe. One tiny metal click.
  155. 6:11You close the panel slowly. She holds
  156. 6:13your loose buckle.
  157. 6:15A hand rests against the other side of
  158. 6:17the metal. You wait until your legs
  159. 6:19hurt. Then, wait longer. 20 floors
  160. 6:22remain. One neighbor can stop both of
  161. 6:25you. She takes out the radio she once
  162. 6:27wanted to follow. The last battery still
  163. 6:29work. You test it against your ear. The
  164. 6:32collectors have kept the old frequency.
  165. 6:34Now, they bargain. For once, their
  166. 6:37invitation can do something useful.
  167. 6:39>> Water at the stadium gate. Bring food.
  168. 6:42Come alone.
  169. 6:43>> You lower the radio through the
  170. 6:45stairwell toward floor 20. This time,
  171. 6:48you leave it there. No retrieval. No
  172. 6:50tomorrow.
  173. 6:51The hand slides off the panel. Footsteps
  174. 6:54go away.
  175. 6:55You move before the battery stop paying
  176. 6:57for your silence.
  177. 7:003 days later, you have reached floor 12,
  178. 7:03not the basement.
  179. 7:04Some doors open quietly. Some stay shut
  180. 7:07after one listening pause.
  181. 7:09You sleep in shifts and carry bottles in
  182. 7:12separate journeys. Going down is work
  183. 7:15when your legs have forgotten stairs.
  184. 7:176 days of food. 40 L carried. 6 days to
  185. 7:21find another answer.
  186. 7:23At a lower window, something white moves
  187. 7:25across the bank. A cap splashed with
  188. 7:28paint. Ines is still alive.
  189. 7:31She lifts one finger, then points
  190. 7:33straight down.
  191. 7:34You hold up the key. She presses both
  192. 7:36hands together. The street took your
  193. 7:39rope. It did not take your neighbor.
  194. 7:43The basement laundry is wrecked. Behind
  195. 7:45it, the passage still exists. Dry floor,
  196. 7:49old footprints, a door at the far end.
  197. 7:52You stay at the threshold and watch
  198. 7:54before entering.
  199. 7:55The key fits,
  200. 7:57but someone has chained the other side.
  201. 7:59Three taps, a pause,
  202. 8:02three taps back through the door.
  203. 8:04Then a chain slides and you finally see
  204. 8:07her face.
  205. 8:08The white cap, the green apron.
  206. 8:10No glass between you.
  207. 8:12She laughs without making any noise, and
  208. 8:15so do you.
  209. 8:16She escaped through a cleaning cupboard
  210. 8:18while the collector searched upstairs.
  211. 8:20They took the roof boxes. They never
  212. 8:22found her basement stock.
  213. 8:24She has been waiting here, listening for
  214. 8:26your door.
  215. 8:27She knew you could not stay above the
  216. 8:29weather forever.
  217. 8:30Finding Inez is not the same as finding
  218. 8:33a home.
  219. 8:35Two days go on the last carrying trips
  220. 8:38and checking doors. You leave the pot,
  221. 8:40the blue kite, the water tank. You keep
  222. 8:43the key, the scarf, and the folded plan.
  223. 8:46For the first time, everybody eats from
  224. 8:48the same pile. Inez has food and sealed
  225. 8:51water in a dry archive room.
  226. 8:53One maintenance container smells of
  227. 8:55fuel. You leave it behind. Boiling kills
  228. 8:58germs. It cannot remove fuel or toxic
  229. 9:01chemicals. Even a working stove would
  230. 9:03not turn that into drinking water. 8 L
  231. 9:06in your safe bottles. That is the actual
  232. 9:09count.
  233. 9:11Day 90. Your tower food is gone. The
  234. 9:14archive door opens. Inside, sealed
  235. 9:17bottles, intact tins, dry cardboard, an
  236. 9:20uncovered air grill.
  237. 9:22Inez counted 30 days of food for three
  238. 9:24at your ration, 24 more liters of water,
  239. 9:27enough to plan the next search. 30 days
  240. 9:30of food at the old ration, 32 L safe
  241. 9:33water. You shut the entrance. She starts
  242. 9:35unfolding the dry blankets. Inez counts
  243. 9:38the doors again. There should only be
  244. 9:40one. The narrow door at the back is
  245. 9:42missing from her plan. You have not
  246. 9:44checked what is behind it yet. Then the
  247. 9:46handle moves slowly. All three of you
  248. 9:50stop breathing. Three taps come through
  249. 9:52the metal. A pause. Three more. That was
  250. 9:55the signal you gave Ines in the passage.
  251. 9:58Somebody else heard it and this door
  252. 10:00opens from their side.
