  1. 0:00Automatic doors open for anything that
  2. 0:02walks up to them. They do not check for
  3. 0:04a pulse.
  4. 0:06It is 2:14 in the morning. You are
  5. 0:08stacking cans in aisle seven, and the
  6. 0:11front doors have just slid open. The man
  7. 0:14in the doorway comes in every night at
  8. 0:162:00. Milk and cigarettes.
  9. 0:19Tonight, he just stands [music] there.
  10. 0:21The doors try to close on him and open
  11. 0:24and close.
  12. 0:26Dana, the night manager, shoves him back
  13. 0:28outside with a shopping cart and locks
  14. 0:30the doors.
  15. 0:31>> [music]
  16. 0:31>> He walks into the glass, backs up, does
  17. 0:35it again.
  18. 0:36In the office, there are 16 security
  19. 0:38cameras. On every screen, somebody is
  20. 0:41running.
  21. 0:43Dana grabs her car keys. Her kids are
  22. 0:45across town. "One hour," she says. "Lock
  23. 0:48it behind me."
  24. 0:49It is the last voice you will hear for
  25. 0:5114 days.
  26. 0:53So, now it is just you, 40,000 products,
  27. 0:58and a front wall made of glass.
  28. 1:00First problem, the glass.
  29. 1:03There is a steel shutter. It is
  30. 1:05electric.
  31. 1:06>> [music]
  32. 1:06>> This store never closes, so it comes
  33. 1:09down once a year on Christmas Day.
  34. 1:11If the power dies first, you lower it by
  35. 1:14hand, one crank at a time, with an
  36. 1:17audience.
  37. 1:18So, you bring it down now. It takes 40
  38. 1:20seconds, and it sounds like a freight
  39. 1:23train.
  40. 1:24New store policy, nobody gets in.
  41. 1:27Then you do what you do every night. You
  42. 1:29count stock.
  43. 1:31Aisle seven, 9,000 cans. At four a day,
  44. 1:35that is six years from one aisle.
  45. 1:39There is enough food in this building to
  46. 1:41last a lifetime.
  47. 1:42Reaching day 30 is going to be the hard
  48. 1:44part
  49. 1:45because food is not the problem.
  50. 1:48At 4:51, the power dies. The freezers
  51. 1:52stop humming.
  52. 1:53And at the back of the store, something
  53. 1:55goes clunk. The fire exit is held shut
  54. 1:59by a magnet and a magnet needs power.
  55. 2:02>> [music]
  56. 2:03>> You run the whole length of the store.
  57. 2:05The fire exit is already drifting open.
  58. 2:08You pull it shut.
  59. 2:09>> [music]
  60. 2:09>> It will not stay shut. So, you fetch the
  61. 2:12pallet jack. A pallet of cat litter
  62. 2:15weighs almost a ton. You park three of
  63. 2:18them against the door.
  64. 2:19Next, the staff [music] entrance. Six
  65. 2:22people have a key to it. You put yours
  66. 2:24in the lock and you snap it off. Now,
  67. 2:27nobody has one. If Dana comes back, she
  68. 2:30can knock.
  69. 2:32Emergency lights are built to last 90
  70. 2:34minutes. Long enough for everybody to
  71. 2:37leave. Nobody planned for somebody
  72. 2:39staying.
  73. 2:41When they fade, you learn something
  74. 2:43about supermarkets.
  75. 2:44>> [music]
  76. 2:44>> They have no windows. With the shutter
  77. 2:47down, you have built a cave.
  78. 2:49Isle 12, flashlights, [music]
  79. 2:52batteries. You count those, too.
  80. 2:55Second problem, the rot. [music]
  81. 2:57Without power, a fridge keeps food safe
  82. 3:00for about 4 hours. A full freezer, about
  83. 3:032 [music] days.
  84. 3:04After that, you are sealed inside a
  85. 3:06building with 4 tons of meat, milk, and
  86. 3:09fish.
  87. 3:10But, there is a walk-in freezer. A steel
  88. 3:13room with a rubber seal built so that no
  89. 3:16air gets in.
  90. 3:17It works just as well the other way.
  91. 3:19>> [music]
  92. 3:20>> It takes you 11 hours with one cart. You
  93. 3:23keep back the bread and the fruit. For 1
  94. 3:26week, you eat like a king.
  95. 3:28Then, you tape the seams and you write
  96. 3:30on the door,
  97. 3:31"New store policy. Nobody opens this.
  98. 3:35Ever."
  99. 3:37On the third morning, you climb to the
  100. 3:39roof.
  101. 3:40Two nights ago, the parking lot was
  102. 3:42empty. Now, there are 200 people in it.
  103. 3:46Standing, facing the doors.
  104. 3:48>> [music]
  105. 3:48>> They are not hunting you. They do not
  106. 3:51know you are here.
  107. 3:52It is Saturday morning. They have come
  108. 3:54to do their shopping.
  109. 3:56Here is the thing nobody tells you about
  110. 3:59the dead.
  111. 4:00They don't hunt. They repeat.
  112. 4:03They arrive around 8:00. They lean on
  113. 4:05the shutter all day.
  114. 4:07Around 10:00 at night, they wander off.
  115. 4:10They shop when they always shopped.
  116. 4:12Nights are quiet.
  117. 4:14>> [music]
  118. 4:14>> Nights were always quiet.
  119. 4:16That is why you took this job.
  120. 4:18New policy. You work nights.
  121. 4:21At night, the roof is yours. You cook up
  122. 4:24there on a camping stove from aisle 19.
  123. 4:27Never indoors. In a sealed building, a
  124. 4:30charcoal grill will kill you more
  125. 4:32quietly than they will.
  126. 4:35On day five, the faucets run dry. No
  127. 4:39power, no pumps. Drinking is easy. You
  128. 4:42have six pallets of bottled water.
  129. 4:44>> [music]
  130. 4:45>> The toilets are the problem.
  131. 4:47So, one bucket, one trash bag, and aisle
  132. 4:5114, cat litter. You already knew it was
  133. 4:54useful.
  134. 4:57On day six, a car pulls into the staff
  135. 4:59parking.
  136. 5:01It stops perfectly between the lines.
  137. 5:03It is Dana's.
  138. 5:05She sits behind the wheel with the
  139. 5:06engine running until the tank is empty.
  140. 5:09She does not get out.
  141. 5:11>> [music]
  142. 5:11>> On day nine, the driver's door is open
  143. 5:14and the seat [clears throat] is empty.
  144. 5:17On day 10, you are asleep on a pile of
  145. 5:20dog beds when the ceiling turns white.
  146. 5:23Every light, every freezer, and from
  147. 5:26every speaker in the building, the store
  148. 5:28playlist at full volume.
  149. 5:31The power is back.
  150. 5:33Outside, 300 heads turn [music] at once.
  151. 5:37The main breaker is in the back office.
  152. 5:39Gray box, red handle, 90 yards away. You
  153. 5:43have never run this fast in your [music]
  154. 5:45life. 40 seconds. Then dark.
  155. 5:49Then silence.
  156. 5:51But for 40 seconds, you were the
  157. 5:53brightest, loudest building in the city.
  158. 5:56New policy, the breaker stays off.
  159. 5:59Too late. They are not leaning now. They
  160. 6:02are pushing.
  161. 6:04Third problem, the shutter.
  162. 6:06>> [music]
  163. 6:06>> It was built to stop one man with a
  164. 6:08crowbar, not 300 people.
  165. 6:11By midnight, [music] the steel has
  166. 6:13started to bow.
  167. 6:14So, you build a second wall. Pallets of
  168. 6:17bottled water, a ton each, parked
  169. 6:20against the steel.
  170. 6:21Then shopping carts, nested, chained, 40
  171. 6:25to a row.
  172. 6:26One row weighs as much as a small car.
  173. 6:29But a wall only buys time. You need them
  174. 6:32to leave.
  175. 6:34Isle 12 sells alarm clocks, the loud
  176. 6:37kind, with two bells.
  177. 6:39You set one for noon. Then, in the dark,
  178. 6:42you throw it off the back of the roof as
  179. 6:44far as you can.
  180. 6:46At noon, it rings, and 300 heads turn
  181. 6:49the other way.
  182. 6:52It works for 3 days. Then, on the 14th
  183. 6:55night, somebody knocks on the fire exit.
  184. 6:58Three knocks.
  185. 6:59>> [music]
  186. 6:59>> A pause.
  187. 7:01Three more.
  188. 7:02The dead do not knock.
  189. 7:05There are five of them. A pickup truck,
  190. 7:08a tow chain, and a very simple plan.
  191. 7:11They saw the lights on day 10. They know
  192. 7:14somebody is inside, and they know what
  193. 7:17is in here with you.
  194. 7:19Fourth problem, the living.
  195. 7:21>> [music]
  196. 7:21>> You cannot fight five people.
  197. 7:24But you understand something they don't.
  198. 7:27If they rip that shutter off, 300 dead
  199. 7:30walk in right behind them.
  200. 7:32And then, nobody has a supermarket.
  201. 7:34So, you don't open the door. You open
  202. 7:37the store.
  203. 7:38One rope, one bucket, lowered off the
  204. 7:41back of the roof at 2:00 in the morning.
  205. 7:44The first 20 cans are free. After that,
  206. 7:46you trade.
  207. 7:47>> [music]
  208. 7:48>> Batteries, fuel, medicine, news.
  209. 7:52You have worked retail for 6 years. You
  210. 7:54know how to handle difficult [music]
  211. 7:56customers.
  212. 7:57Policy one, amended. Nobody gets in, but
  213. 8:01the roof is open.
  214. 8:03By day 18, there is a line. A woman with
  215. 8:06a baby, two old men with a wheelbarrow,
  216. 8:10and a girl on a bike who only ever asks
  217. 8:12for cat food.
  218. 8:15On the 19th night at 10:00, something
  219. 8:18scratches [music] at the staff entrance.
  220. 8:20Metal on metal.
  221. 8:22Somebody is trying to fit a key into the
  222. 8:24lock.
  223. 8:25It is Dana. She is starting her shift,
  224. 8:28but the lock is full of your key.
  225. 8:31She tries for an hour.
  226. 8:33The next night, she is back. She is
  227. 8:36never late.
  228. 8:38On day 22, the bucket comes back up with
  229. 8:41a note in it. Pencil, a kid's
  230. 8:44handwriting.
  231. 8:45The men with the truck are done trading.
  232. 8:48They are coming tonight. They want all
  233. 8:50of it. Please let us in.
  234. 8:53>> [music]
  235. 8:53>> Policy one says nobody gets in.
  236. 8:56Policy one was written by somebody who
  237. 8:58thought the problem was the door.
  238. 9:01Isle 20, ladders.
  239. 9:03You lower one off the roof. The girl
  240. 9:06climbs up. In her backpack, one very
  241. 9:09large orange cat.
  242. 9:11Then you get ready for the truck. You
  243. 9:13cannot stop five people. But you know
  244. 9:16what can?
  245. 9:17Isle 12, 40 alarm clocks. Winding them
  246. 9:21takes one person 40 minutes. It takes
  247. 9:24two people 20. You are starting to see
  248. 9:27the point of other people.
  249. 9:29At 3:00, the truck backs up to the
  250. 9:31shutter. While they drag out the chain,
  251. 9:33you lower the bucket one last time,
  252. 9:36straight into the bed of their truck. 40
  253. 9:39clocks, all set for 3:10.
  254. 9:42It is the loudest thing this city has
  255. 9:44heard in a month.
  256. 9:45Every dead thing for a mile turns toward
  257. 9:48it. Toward the truck.
  258. 9:50The men do the smart thing. They drop
  259. 9:53the chain and they drive. And the noise
  260. 9:56goes with them. So does the crowd.
  261. 9:58>> [music]
  262. 9:58>> By sunrise, the parking lot is empty.
  263. 10:03Day 30.
  264. 10:04>> [music]
  265. 10:04>> Inventory.
  266. 10:06People, two. Cats, one. Cans, plenty.
  267. 10:11Customers, 31 a night.
  268. 10:13>> [music]
  269. 10:14>> There is enough food in this building to
  270. 10:15last a lifetime.
  271. 10:17Alone, you would not have seen day 23.
  272. 10:21You know that now.
  273. 10:22And every night at 10:00, a key
  274. 10:25scratches at the staff entrance.
  275. 10:27Dana is starting her shift. She has
  276. 10:29never missed one.
  277. 10:31Neither have you.
  278. 10:34>> [music]
