Full transcript
- 0:00Your detention just got longer. 30 days
- 0:03longer. It's 3:40 and you're the last
- 0:05student at Lincoln High. Mr. Hale went
- 0:07to check on a scream in the gym. He took
- 0:09your phone with him. Then the speaker
- 0:11over the board clicks on. It's Mrs.
- 0:13Reyes, the vice principal.
- 0:15>> Stay in your rooms. Lock your doors. Do
- 0:18not open them for anyone.
- 0:20>> A long pause.
- 0:22>> Even if you know them.
- 0:24>> 10 minutes later, somebody knocks. Two
- 0:26slow, one fast. Mr. Hale's knock. You
- 0:29don't move. He knocks again. Same knock,
- 0:32same speed. He doesn't say your name. He
- 0:34doesn't say anything at all. First
- 0:36problem, the door. It opens into the
- 0:39room. So, anything out there only has to
- 0:41push. You turn the lock. Then, you build
- 0:44a wall. 32 desks. His desk goes last.
- 0:47It's the first time you've ever tidied
- 0:49this room. Then, you check your
- 0:51supplies. Half a granola bar, one water
- 0:53bottle, a math book. "Help is coming."
- 0:56she said. She didn't say when. It's 30
- 0:58days away.
- 1:00At 3:10 in the morning, the speaker
- 1:02clicks on again. Static. A breath. Then,
- 1:04Mrs. Reyes in her cheerful morning
- 1:06voice.
- 1:07>> Good morning, Lincoln High. Today's
- 1:09lunch is pizza. Have a wonderful day.
- 1:12>> Click. Outside your window, every head
- 1:15in the parking lot turns toward the
- 1:16sound.
- 1:18Second problem, water. The lights died
- 1:21at noon. The tap still runs, but weaker
- 1:24every hour. So, you fill everything.
- 1:26Every bottle in the lost and found.
- 1:28Every beaker in the science lab next
- 1:30door. One person needs about a gallon a
- 1:32day. You fill 19 gallons. That's 19
- 1:36days, if nothing goes wrong. On the
- 1:38second night, the announcements come
- 1:40again. Then, something new.
- 1:42>> If anybody can hear me, flash your
- 1:44lights.
- 1:45>> Your classroom has an emergency bucket.
- 1:48Inside, there's a flashlight. You flash
- 1:50it at the window. Three times. A minute
- 1:52later.
- 1:53>> I see you. Room 214. Stay in your room.
- 1:56You're safe there.
- 1:57>> It's the nicest thing a vice principal
- 1:59has ever said to you.
- 2:02On the third morning at 8:00, the bell
- 2:05rings. The power is dead. The bell
- 2:07isn't. It runs on a battery and nobody
- 2:10told it school is canceled. Outside,
- 2:12every one of them turns. Then, they walk
- 2:14toward it. By noon, 200 of them are
- 2:17pressed against the east fence, your
- 2:19side of the building.
- 2:20Third problem, the bell. It rings every
- 2:2350 minutes all day long and every time
- 2:26they crowd the east doors and stare up
- 2:28at it. That's when you notice, while the
- 2:30bell rings, nothing is watching the rest
- 2:33of the building. Rule one, move when the
- 2:35bell rings.
- 2:36Fourth problem, food. The cafeteria is
- 2:39downstairs in the west wing. At the
- 2:4110:50 bell, you go down the west stairs,
- 2:44past the trophy case, past the main
- 2:46office. The blinds are down. A lamp is
- 2:48on inside. You don't knock. She doesn't
- 2:51open. The kitchen storeroom is a cave of
- 2:54giant cans, peaches, beans, corn, 300
- 2:58cartons of chocolate milk going warm.
- 3:00You fill a mop bucket and sprint back up
- 3:02before the bell stops. That night, the
- 3:04speaker clicks on.
- 3:06>> Today's lunch is peaches. Nice work,
- 3:08room 214.
- 3:10>> You never told her you went.
- 3:13On day five, the tap goes dry, but a
- 3:16water heater is a big tank of tap water.
- 3:19The school's is in the boiler room. You
- 3:20switch off its power. You open a hot tap
- 3:23to let the air in. Then, you open the
- 3:25drain at the bottom. Six buckets, enough
- 3:27for a week. Every day at 3:40, Mr. Hale
- 3:31knocks. Two slow, one fast. That's when
- 3:34detention used to end. You start telling
- 3:36the time by him.
- 3:37On day seven, you go back for more food.
- 3:40Same bell, same stairs, but the walk-in
- 3:42freezer is open. Something inside is
- 3:44still wearing a hairnet. It shuffles out
- 3:47right between you and the door. Then,
- 3:49the bell stops. When the bell stops,
- 3:52they turn back. You have seconds. You
- 3:54roll a can of peaches across the floor.
- 3:56It clangs into the dish rack. The
- 3:58hairnet turns toward the noise. You walk
- 4:00past it with your heart in your ears.
- 4:04On day nine, the gym doors burst open.
- 4:07Any room built for more than 50 people
- 4:09needs doors that swing outward so a
- 4:11crowd can get out with one push, any
- 4:13crowd. 60 of them pour into the halls.
- 4:16The cafeteria is theirs now. That night,
- 4:19they come up the east stairs. They hit
- 4:21the stairwell door again and again. It
- 4:24doesn't move. That door opens toward the
- 4:26stairs. To get to you, they'd have to
- 4:28pull and they don't pull. Rule two, they
- 4:31push. They can't pull. So, your floor is
- 4:34safe. Your food is not. You count what's
- 4:37left, 11 cans, half a box of crackers,
- 4:40nine days if you're careful. You are not
- 4:42careful. You're 15.
- 4:44Every night now, you press the call
- 4:46button by the door and she answers. She
- 4:48tells you about her cat, Biscuit. You
- 4:51tell her how you got detention. She
- 4:52laughs so hard she has to put the
- 4:54microphone down. It's the first laugh
- 4:56you've heard in 11 days.
- 5:00In the middle of the afternoon, the
- 5:01speaker clicks on.
- 5:03>> Room 214, I need a favor.
- 5:06>> Mrs. Reyes has a plan. To a pilot, a V
- 5:09on the ground means we need help. An X
- 5:11means we need a doctor. She wants a V on
- 5:14the football field, 30 to 50 ft long,
- 5:17big enough to see from the sky. She
- 5:19can't leave the office. So, it's you.
- 5:21The roof hatch is in the janitor's
- 5:23closet. From the roof, a steel ladder
- 5:25runs down the back wall to the field.
- 5:27The line marker is in the equipment
- 5:29shed. The only problem is the 200 people
- 5:32at the fence.
- 5:34At 11:00 at night, the east bell rings.
- 5:37Mrs. Reyes, keeping her promise. Every
- 5:40one of them turns away from the field.
- 5:42You climb down. You push the line marker
- 5:44in one straight stripe, 40 ft, turn, 40
- 5:47ft back. Halfway down the second line,
- 5:50the bell stops. In the silence, a man in
- 5:52a tie is standing under the goalpost. He
- 5:55knocks on it, two slow, one fast. You
- 5:58stop breathing. He wanders off toward
- 6:00the fence. You finish the V. Back in
- 6:02your room, the speaker clicks on.
- 6:04>> Thank you, room 214. You did so well.
- 6:10>> On day 17,
- 6:11>> [music]
- 6:11>> a small plane flies over, low, slow. It
- 6:14circles the V once, then it rocks its
- 6:17wings, [music] left, right. To a pilot,
- 6:20that means one thing, message received.
- 6:22Somebody is coming. That night, [music]
- 6:24Mrs. Reyes doesn't say a word.
- 6:28Day 20, the food runs out. There's a
- 6:31vending machine at the end of your hall,
- 6:32glass front, loud glass. So, you wait
- 6:35for the bell. Rule one, bell, swing,
- 6:38bell, swing. By the third bell, you're
- 6:41eating barbecue chips for breakfast. Day
- 6:4323, no plane, no helicopter, just the
- 6:47bell every 50 minutes, and Mr. Hale at
- 6:503:40. You start talking to the goldfish
- 6:52in the science lab. It's a good
- 6:54listener. It never tells you to stay in
- 6:56your room.
- 6:57That's when you notice it. The bell only
- 6:59rings on the east side, your side, never
- 7:01in the west wing. You press the call
- 7:03button. Why only our side? A long pause.
- 7:07>> Old wiring, sweetheart. I can't change
- 7:09it.
- 7:11>> 2:00 in the morning, the bell rings on
- 7:13your floor, right outside your door.
- 7:16Every one of them in the building comes
- 7:17up the stairs at once. They hit the
- 7:19stairwell door, hundreds of them,
- 7:22pushing all night. The door holds. It
- 7:25opens the other way. By morning, it's
- 7:27bent in the middle like a book. You call
- 7:29the office. Why did it ring? Static.
- 7:31Then, softly,
- 7:33>> Stay in your room, room 214. You're
- 7:36safest there.
- 7:38>> 6:00 in the morning, the The rings, 2
- 7:41hours early, on your side, every one of
- 7:43them turns toward you. Then you hear it,
- 7:46rotor blades.
- 7:47You climb out onto the roof. A
- 7:49helicopter is coming down on the field,
- 7:51right onto your V. Below you, the west
- 7:53doors swing open. A woman in a cardigan
- 7:56walks out, purse, coffee mug. She
- 7:58doesn't run. She doesn't have to.
- 8:00There's nothing on her side. You wave
- 8:02both arms. You shout. The bell is
- 8:05louder. She climbs in without looking
- 8:07back. The helicopter lifts. It doesn't
- 8:10turn around.
- 8:1130 days. The bell rang on your side. You
- 8:14thought it was the wiring. On the second
- 8:16night, she asked you to flash your
- 8:17light. She wasn't checking that you were
- 8:19alive. She was checking where you were.
- 8:22Inventory: one flashlight, two cans of
- 8:24peaches, three rules. Move when the bell
- 8:27rings. They push. They can't pull. And
- 8:30the new one, anyone who tells you to
- 8:32stay put is leaving.
- 8:34The speaker clicks on, a recording in
- 8:36her morning voice.
- 8:37>> Good morning, Lincoln High. Please stay
- 8:40in your rooms.
- 8:41>> Then, down the hall, the bell rings,
- 8:44right on time.
- 8:52>> [music]
