- 0:01-They love you! Can you feel the love?
- 0:03[ Cheers and applause ]
- 0:05-Thank you.
- 0:06-Welcome back to the show. It's always great to see you.
- 0:09I want to congratulate you, by the way,
- 0:11on your Emmy nomination for "Euphoria."
- 0:12-Thank you. -Come on, bud!
- 0:14[ Cheers and applause ] What a year.
- 0:17Uh, thank you for coming back to our show and seeing us.
- 0:20Are you -- are you kind of bittersweet,
- 0:22sad, that "Euphoria" is over?
- 0:23-Of course, of course. I mean, it was so --
- 0:25you know, was such a huge part of my life.
- 0:27And it was so much of my 20s.
- 0:29And I feel like I made so many lasting, loving friendships.
- 0:33And I learned so much about myself.
- 0:36And I -- honestly, I think the most important thing
- 0:38that I always carry with me is the --
- 0:39is the people who connected and loved Rue.
- 0:42-Yeah. We love Rue. -And that, you know...
- 0:44-Yeah. -You were fantastic.
- 0:46Well deserved on that nomination.
- 0:49You've been all over the world promoting "The Odyssey,"
- 0:51so thank you for stopping by here.
- 0:53-Thanks for having me.
- 0:54-You had the premiere last night in New York.
- 0:56It was giant. Take me back to the beginning.
- 0:58-Okay. -How do you get --
- 0:59You get cast. And how did you know
- 1:01that you were going to be in this movie?
- 1:02-Well, you know, Tom got the call.
- 1:05-Ooh. [ Cheering ]
- 1:06Okay. Okay. Okay. -Okay.
- 1:09Christopher Nolan called, and I --
- 1:11My heart was just so full. I was so excited for him.
- 1:14Good for him. We love Tom.
- 1:16-I mean, he's the best, and he deserves this.
- 1:18-He deserves it. So much.
- 1:19-Yes. -And I was just so excited.
- 1:21And also I'm -- you know, I'm obviously his biggest fan,
- 1:23but I'm also a Chris Nolan fan. -Yeah.
- 1:27-Right? Like, so, when that kind of opportunity
- 1:29comes around, I was just so excited.
- 1:32Like, I didn't even put myself in that equation at all.
- 1:34Like we already won, you know? -Yeah.
- 1:36-And then he, um -- he had another meeting.
- 1:38So, he had the script.
- 1:40I may have done a little, you know, peeky peek.
- 1:41-Okay. Yeah, you're allowed to peek.
- 1:43-I gotta know. There's a Christopher Nolan
- 1:44script in my house. What am I gonna do, you know?
- 1:46Okay, so I looked. Um...
- 1:49And then, he went off to his meeting,
- 1:50and then when he came home, I was like, "Okay.
- 1:52Like, tell me all about it.
- 1:54Like, how was he? What was it like?"
- 1:55You know what I mean?
- 1:56I was, like, so ready, so excited.
- 1:57And he goes, "Read this again," and I was like, "W-why?
- 2:01Like, I just read it -- like, we just read it last night,"
- 2:03and he's like, "Read it again, but with Athena in mind."
- 2:06And I was like, "Yo, stop it right now."
- 2:09[ Laughter ]
- 2:11And I was just like -- my -- I just -- yeah, I freaked out.
- 2:14I was so grateful, and that he got to be the one
- 2:17to tell me. Come on.
- 2:19-I love that dude. -It was so special.
- 2:21[ Applause ]
- 2:23-I love him so much. He's a great guy.
- 2:26-Me, too. -I know you love him more.
- 2:27You love him more.
- 2:29But what was it like meeting Christopher Nolan?
- 2:31-Oh, I was just trying to play it cool, you know?
- 2:33-Of course. -Because, like, you know,
- 2:34I'm a super fan. I can't come in too strong.
- 2:37You know what I mean? -But you are a super fan.
- 2:39-But of course. -Yeah, everyone is.
- 2:40-Of course. And I think what he represents
- 2:43in our -- in our industry, and I think it was --
- 2:46I would do anything just to kind of be on a set like that
- 2:49and be able to watch and learn.
- 2:50I love being on sets, and I love --
- 2:53even if I'm not working, often, I'll come to set just to watch.
- 2:57And what -- when will you have the opportunity to be
- 2:59on a set like that? -Yeah.
- 3:00-You know what I mean?
- 3:01-Where was he? In his office? What was he doing?
- 3:02-He was in his office and we just --
- 3:04-Was his back towards you, and he spun around?
- 3:05-And he spun around. -Yeah, he spun around like...
- 3:07-Yeah. -"And then -- oh.
- 3:09I didn't know you were there. Yeah, I didn't see you."
- 3:11-Light. You know what I mean?
- 3:14No, it was -- it was -- it was actually so chill.
- 3:16It was so chill.
- 3:17And then like an hour in, I was like,
- 3:18"Yo, I'm kind of kicking it with Christopher Nolan right now."
- 3:20[ Laughter ] -"It's kind of --
- 3:22this is working. This is working."
- 3:23-Yeah, this is working.
- 3:25-But did you tell him how much of a fan you were?
- 3:26-I did, I did. I did it in a cool way.
- 3:29You know? It was a nice transition,
- 3:30'cause there was, like, um...
- 3:32My favorite Christopher Nolan movie is "Interstellar."
- 3:34-Yeah. -So...
- 3:35[ Cheering ] Shout-out.
- 3:37And so there was a --
- 3:38like, a little kind of replica of TARS,
- 3:42the robot that's in the film.
- 3:43-Yes. -And I was like,
- 3:45"Okay, this is my time to kind of ask about 'Interstellar.'"
- 3:48-Oh. So you go... -Yeah, so I was like,
- 3:50"Oh, I love -- TARS, yo," and that's how I opened up that.
- 3:54-But you are a super fan of "Interstellar."
- 3:55-Yeah. -You actually brought us
- 3:56a video of you explaining to Hunter Schafer...
- 3:59-Yes. -...on the set of "Euphoria."
- 4:01-This was at home. This was in my living room.
- 4:03-This is in your living room. -Tom is recording this, yeah.
- 4:04-All right. Well, this is explaining the --
- 4:06-"Interstellar." -Just explaining the movie.
- 4:08-Anybody who needs help, I got you.
- 4:09-Yeah, and it was -- [ Laughter ]
- 4:11Thank you for bringing this to us.
- 4:12We actually had to cut it down a little bit because it was --
- 4:14-I cut it down before I sent it to you.
- 4:16-Thank you.
- 4:17-Like, it was like 10 minutes long.
- 4:19-It's extensive. It's worth it.
- 4:21-It's very detailed. -Take a look at this.
- 4:23-Prior to this, in her life... -[ Laughing ]
- 4:27-...she's been growing up with this thing in her room, right?
- 4:31And it's been knocking on his door.
- 4:33That's what I was saying with this.
- 4:35And she's telling her dad, and dad's like,
- 4:37"What the [bleep] you on about?
- 4:38But dad, he follows one of those [bleep] things,
- 4:42and it takes him to NASA,
- 4:43which ultimately ends him up here, right?
- 4:46And then he goes off, whatever, whatever.
- 4:48In her life, while he's doing this crazy [bleep],
- 4:52this when he gives her the coordinates,
- 4:54what's actually happening -- -Goes there.
- 4:56-Over here!
- 4:59-"Oh, it's over here -- no!" [ Cheers and applause ]
- 5:01"While he's doing that, this is happening!"
- 5:03-Yes. And I don't know if you can see,
- 5:06but I was mapping it out on a -- like, on a box.
- 5:09-Yes. -So she could understand
- 5:10the timeline, the dimensions, if you know what I'm --
- 5:13-I love how much you're nerding out about it.
- 5:14I love it so much. -I do. I love it so much.
- 5:16-And thank you for bringing that video.
- 5:19But you've done massive movies --
- 5:21"Dune," "Spider-Man."
- 5:23How does -- [ Cheers and applause ]
- 5:26This amazing work, but amazing sets.
- 5:30How does it compare to this?
- 5:32Because what I've heard and talked to the cast so far,
- 5:34people's minds are blown. -It's -- it's extraordinary.
- 5:38Like, being on a Christopher Nolan set
- 5:39is unlike anything I think --
- 5:42I remember my first day, I kind of was dropped into Troy.
- 5:47Like, I was fully at the war, you know?
- 5:50And the night before, I had done a night shoot on "Euphoria."
- 5:53So you can imagine that -- that kind of switch-up in,
- 5:57like, less than 24 hours...
- 5:58-Like, how is your brain handling this?
- 6:00-I don't know. I have no idea. [ Laughter ]
- 6:02And I felt -- I honestly felt like I was still dreaming almost
- 6:05because you walk onto these sets, and they are --
- 6:08I mean, you've heard the scale, the scope,
- 6:10the attention to detail. -Where was this set?
- 6:12'Cause there was different countries.
- 6:13-Yeah, I went -- I went everywhere.
- 6:14-Yeah, you did. -I went everywhere.
- 6:16And I felt bad because I was kind of popping in and out.
- 6:18You know, people, it was really an odyssey.
- 6:20They had gone through so much together,
- 6:22and I was just like, "Hey, y'all."
- 6:23[ Laughter ]
- 6:24"See you in Scotland. See you in Iceland," you know?
- 6:26-Yeah. -But it was --
- 6:28it was such a privilege and such a joy.
- 6:30And I was just, honestly, trying to, like,
- 6:34take all that excitement and trying to use it,
- 6:36you know? Because, you know,
- 6:37sometimes you can psych yourself out, you know?
- 6:39You can get in your head about, like --
- 6:41I mean, being on a set like that with people that I admire,
- 6:44the level, the scale, the amount of background performers.
- 6:47-The acting, the everything.
- 6:48-The acting, the fire, the whole thing is happening.
- 6:51And I just -- I don't want to be the thing
- 6:52that's holding this up. -Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 6:54-I don't want to be messing up my lines.
- 6:56-I love that you're still humble about this.
- 6:58You're Zendaya. You're allowed to be --
- 7:01They're lucky to have you on the set.
- 7:03-It was... -Good for you.
- 7:05-It was so cool.
- 7:06-And this is something I think everyone
- 7:08should see in a theater, if you can.
- 7:10-Yes. -Yes.
- 7:11-I saw it -- Yeah. -I know that's right.
- 7:13-As big as you can, IMAX or whatever you want to --
- 7:15But it's shot in IMAX. -Yes, entirely.
- 7:17-Have you ever snuck into a theater
- 7:18and watched one of your movies?
- 7:20-I -- Yes, I have.
- 7:21[ Laughter ]
- 7:22-You have? Really? -I have. I --
- 7:24One of the very early "Spider-Man" movies,
- 7:27me and my family, we snuck into the back,
- 7:29and that was really fun. But I remember just, you know,
- 7:32it was actually -- it was the last "Spider-Man" premiere
- 7:35was so special because we knew that big --
- 7:38you know, the Spider-Men were back.
- 7:39-Yes. -You know?
- 7:41I remember knowing, like, "Oh, it's coming,
- 7:44and, like, people, they don't know."
- 7:45-And you're like, "I want to look at the audience
- 7:47and the movie at the same time." -Getting to turn around
- 7:49and watch people's reactions is so fun.
- 7:51And that's the movie-going experience.
- 7:53-Yeah, it's fun. -You know?
- 7:54Getting to experience something
- 7:55in a theater with other people, it's so special.
- 7:58-Yes. [ Cheers and applause ]
- 7:59It's so special.
- 8:01Uh...
- 8:04How do we set up "The Odyssey" and who you play?
- 8:06-Oh. Well... -Yes.
- 8:08-That's a -- that's a tough -- -That's a lot, yeah.
- 8:10It's a 3000-year-old story. Yeah.
- 8:12-Okay? It's quite dense. -Yes.
- 8:14-You know? -I'll say Matt Damon
- 8:16is trying to find his way home.
- 8:18-Yet again. -Let's do that.
- 8:20-Yes. -Yes.
- 8:21I love it. I want to show a clip.
- 8:22Here's Zendaya in "The Odyssey." Take a look at this.
- 8:25-Why can't Gods speak in ways we understand?
- 8:28♪♪
- 8:31-Who doesn't understand thunder?
- 8:34A fire?
- 8:35A child's smile, a good harvest?
- 8:38-But you hide yourselves from us.
- 8:42-Look. Who's moving that cloud?
- 8:46Amassing those birds?
- 8:49Who's moving the water?
- 8:52-Come on, now. It's great!
- 8:54You have to see it. It's amazing.
- 8:56Zendaya, everyone! [ Cheers and applause ]
- 8:58"The Odyssey" opens in theaters everywhere this Friday.
- 9:01More with Zendaya after the break.
- 9:03Stick around.
