1. 0:01Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools invites
2. 0:03you to the graduation ceremony.
3. 0:11Vance High School class of 2020.
4. 0:41Good afternoon students, faculty,
5. 0:43families, elected officials, and
6. 0:45community partners.
7. 0:47It's with great pride that I welcome you
8. 0:48to the graduation ceremony for Zebulon
9. 0:51B. Vance High School.
10. 0:53Today we celebrate the academic
11. 0:55achievements of the class of 2020.
12. 0:58But today is not just about celebrating
13. 1:00the completion of high school credits
14. 1:02required by the state of North Carolina.
15. 1:04More importantly, it's about celebrating
16. 1:07the completion of one part of the
17. 1:08journey and encouraging you as you begin
18. 1:11the next stage of your journey in life.
19. 1:15Thousands of high schools across the
20. 1:16country are conducting commencement
21. 1:18ceremonies this season.
22. 1:20The word commencement is a word that
23. 1:22means an act or instance of commencing
24. 1:25or beginning.
25. 1:27Today does not signify the end of your
26. 1:29formal academic training.
27. 1:31It actually marks the beginning of the
28. 1:33new chapter in your story.
29. 1:35The beginning of increased
30. 1:36responsibilities,
31. 1:38increased opportunities, and increased
32. 1:41commitments to your
33. 1:42to your communities.
34. 1:44What good does the diploma that you've
35. 1:46earned mean if you don't use this
36. 1:48knowledge and wisdom to make our
37. 1:50community, our nation, and our world a
38. 1:53better place?
39. 1:56Don't let the problems or challenges
40. 1:57that face you cause you to feel
41. 1:59insignificant.
42. 2:01You have the gift of creation within
43. 2:03you. And there isn't a virus, equity
44. 2:06issue,
45. 2:07human rights challenge, or scientific
46. 2:09breakthrough that you can't solve with
47. 2:12the collaboration of others and the
48. 2:14belief in yourself.
49. 2:16Today is an important day that you will
50. 2:18remember for the rest of your life.
51. 2:21However, it's not the most important day
52. 2:23in your life.
53. 2:25The two most important days in your life
54. 2:27are the day you were born and the day
55. 2:29that you discover what you were born to
56. 2:31do.
57. 2:32Vigorously search for what you were
58. 2:35created to do.
59. 2:37Relentlessly search for your purpose and
60. 2:39know that everyone won't understand your
61. 2:42journey.
62. 2:43Sometimes, even the people that we love
63. 2:46the most won't understand or accept our
64. 2:49journey.
65. 2:50Cougars,
66. 2:52know when to cut ties and when to let
67. 2:55people go when your purpose outgrows
68. 2:57your friendships or your relationships.
69. 3:01Sadly,
70. 3:03many people give up their search and
71. 3:05settle for good enough
72. 3:06and go through life with the nagging
73. 3:08reality that they are not living their
74. 3:10life's purpose.
75. 3:12But this will not happen to you
76. 3:14and will not be your fate if you
77. 3:16remember along your journey to do three
78. 3:18things.
79. 3:19First,
80. 3:21live with humility
81. 3:22and don't put yourself above or below
82. 3:25anyone else.
83. 3:26Second,
84. 3:27stay curious and commit to being a
85. 3:30lifelong learner.
86. 3:32And third, rely on your faith in good
87. 3:35times and bad times. Sometimes, all you
88. 3:38will have is your faith.
89. 3:40And as long as you don't lose your
90. 3:42faith, that often will be enough to get
91. 3:44you through the trials and tribulations
92. 3:46of life.
93. 3:48Congratulations, class of 2020.
94. 3:51And welcome to the rest of your life.
95. 3:53You are a Vance Cougar and will forever
96. 3:55be a part of the Vance family.
97. 3:58We love you and we are proud of you in
98. 4:00advance for the positive impact that
99. 4:03you're going to have on our community,
100. 4:05our country, and our society.
101. 4:10Good afternoon, Vance family. My name is
102. 4:13Jaimie Halton and I'm honored to welcome
103. 4:15you to the virtual celebration of
104. 4:16Vance's distinguished class of 2020.
105. 4:19Taking this virtual route has really put
106. 4:21our patience and perseverance to the
107. 4:23test, but we are, without a doubt, the
108. 4:25ones who are destined to rise from the
109. 4:27ashes of this crisis and made to conquer
110. 4:29great things. Whether your next step is
111. 4:31higher education, going into the
112. 4:33workforce, or serving in the military,
113. 4:35always move forward with your heads held
114. 4:37high.
115. 4:38Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "Do not
116. 4:40follow where the path may lead. Go
117. 4:42instead where there is no path and leave
118. 4:44a trail." We have blazed a trail at
119. 4:46Vance, whether you chose to or not. I
120. 4:49have no doubt that we will continue to
121. 4:51blaze trails for the rest of our lives.
122. 4:52Congratulations, Vance High School class
123. 4:54of 2020.
124. 4:59Esteemed graduates of 2020, I suspect
125. 5:02deep within your hearts you hold both
126. 5:04eagerness and anticipation for the
127. 5:05future.
128. 5:07We have gone through a whole year faced
129. 5:08with trials and errors and here we are,
130. 5:10not even having a proper graduation.
131. 5:122020 has slammed our year with a
132. 5:14pandemic, an economic recession, a whole
133. 5:16chaotic environmental mess, and much
134. 5:18more.
135. 5:19In uncertain times, it may seem daunting
136. 5:21and appalling. However, we can face
137. 5:23anything after going through the worst
138. 5:25of the worst of any year we've been
139. 5:27born.
140. 5:29I myself, a representative of the class
141. 5:31of 2020, am proud to be a part of this
142. 5:33year's graduating class for the strength
143. 5:35and courage that we possess.
144. 5:37We also have been able to experience
145. 5:39laughing with our friends and shedding
146. 5:40tears over long-spent hours on homework
147. 5:43and projects. It's probably going to get
148. 5:45worse in college, but we're ready.
149. 5:48We did it. We all accomplished one of
150. 5:50the major early milestones of our life,
151. 5:53high school graduation.
152. 5:55This is a major step in the journey of
153. 5:56our lives, one that should be recognized
154. 5:59for its immense significance. It's an
155. 6:02It is an act of not only personal
156. 6:04commitment, but also pride.
157. 6:06We all worked hard to get to this day,
158. 6:08and our work did not go to waste.
159. 6:11A high school diploma is a wonderful
160. 6:13tool in this world, one that opens many
161. 6:15doors of opportunity for anyone
162. 6:18who is lucky enough to have one.
163. 6:20But graduation is by no means an end
164. 6:23goal itself. It is instead part of the
165. 6:25larger journey of life. Wherever this
166. 6:27future takes you, let it take you
167. 6:29somewhere.
168. 6:31As you progress through life, you will
169. 6:32no doubt be faced with many challenging
170. 6:34hurdles.
171. 6:35If you will pardon my presumptuousness,
172. 6:37I would like to share some sound methods
173. 6:39in which you may overcome these oncoming
174. 6:41hurdles.
175. 6:42The first thing is, whenever pressed
176. 6:44with the decision, it is important to
177. 6:46remain calm and determine what the
178. 6:47proper choice,
179. 6:49because panic can lead to confusion.
180. 6:52Simply use your head.
181. 6:53Also, charging straight into an obstacle
182. 6:56is another fine option.
183. 6:59You may from time to time lose sight of
184. 7:01your life goals, but when that happens,
185. 7:03why not try to indulge in a hobby?
186. 7:05Refocus on the center of your passions
187. 7:07and core beliefs of what you want to be
188. 7:09in life. Then a newer or perhaps a past
189. 7:12goal might reignite.
190. 7:14As time passes, doubts will shroud your
191. 7:16mind, and you will find it harder to
192. 7:18believe in yourself.
193. 7:19In those times of darkness, believe that
194. 7:21your friends and family will be there
195. 7:23every step of the way
196. 7:25to help you back up on your feet to soar
197. 7:27to peace you can't even imagine.
198. 7:30Class of 2020, we do not stop here.
199. 7:34This graduation has already shown us how
200. 7:36capable we are of accomplishing our
201. 7:38goals when we commit ourselves to them.
202. 7:41I hope all of us can take this personal
203. 7:43accomplishment and as an example of how
204. 7:46anything is truly possible once we put
205. 7:48our minds to it.
206. 7:50As we all continue on with our lives,
207. 7:52let us take a step with confidence
208. 7:54knowing that we have achieved great
209. 7:56heights and are equipped with the
210. 7:57necessary tools to tackle the future.
211. 8:01Before we part ways, I would like to
212. 8:02recognize a couple of people who helped
213. 8:04me through the struggles of high school
214. 8:06because without them I wouldn't be
215. 8:07standing here in front of you.
216. 8:10I would like to thank my friends,
217. 8:11family, and faculty staff members that
218. 8:14encouraged me to be my best when I was
219. 8:15at my worst.
220. 8:17Without them, I would have been lost and
221. 8:18astray losing focus on what's really
222. 8:21important in life and that's to be happy
223. 8:23and content with myself as a human
224. 8:24being.
225. 8:26Honestly, I didn't think I was going to
226. 8:27make it.
227. 8:29But being here is such an honor and I'm
228. 8:31so elated that I got to experience this
229. 8:33momentous honorary achievement as being
230. 8:35salutatorian of my class.
231. 8:37Thank you for letting me be part of the
232. 8:39class of 2020 and thank you for giving
233. 8:41me both heaven and hell in one place.
234. 8:44I will always cherish the time I spent
235. 8:46inside Zephyrhills High School and thank
236. 8:48you so much once again.
237. 8:50It has been an honor.
238. 8:52All of us will strive to be amazing
239. 8:54together in the future and I can't wait
240. 8:56to see the outcome. Thank you everyone
241. 8:58for attending our virtual graduation and
242. 9:01class of 2020, we made it.
243. 9:05Thank you.
244. 9:07Good afternoon families, friends, and
245. 9:09graduates. My name is Demetrius Dedeches
246. 9:12II for the second and I am the
247. 9:15valedictorian of Advances 2020
248. 9:17graduating class.
249. 9:18The first thing I would like to say is
250. 9:20thank you. I would like to thank our
251. 9:21teachers, our faculty,
252. 9:24our like our staff, our families, our
253. 9:27friends, and my fellow graduates.
254. 9:29Without your help, I would not be giving
255. 9:31this speech today.
256. 9:32I am honored to represent one of the
257. 9:34most resilient
258. 9:36graduating classes Advances ever
259. 9:38We have been through three different
260. 9:39principals. We've been through several
261. 9:41different emergencies, and now this
262. 9:43global health crisis.
263. 9:46But these last 4 years have not been
264. 9:47easy, but we made it. We worked to get
265. 9:50to this moment to finally reap the
266. 9:51benefits of 4 years of hard work.
267. 9:53We've experienced it all together. We
268. 9:55worked hard in our classes together. We
269. 9:57help each other succeed.
270. 9:59And despite not being together
271. 10:00physically,
272. 10:01this is the last time we'll be together.
273. 10:04Together as the graduating class of
274. 10:052020. Together in the same place in our
275. 10:08life.
276. 10:09We're all moving forward to something
277. 10:10different, something new, something
278. 10:12exciting.
279. 10:14I spent many hours deliberating on what
280. 10:16to say to you all today.
281. 10:18What do I tell a group of students in
282. 10:19their coming of age?
283. 10:20What message do I think is important
284. 10:22enough to highlight with my few minutes
285. 10:23in the spotlight?
286. 10:25And I've come up with two answers.
287. 10:27Grit and kindness.
288. 10:29Tenacity, perseverance.
289. 10:32The ability to succeed in the face of
290. 10:33great adversity.
291. 10:35It's one of the most important things in
292. 10:36life, but we're also one of the easiest
293. 10:38to ignore.
294. 10:39Throughout our lives, there are going to
295. 10:40be so many people who tell us no. So
296. 10:42many mistakes, so many squandered
297. 10:45opportunities.
298. 10:46But we must remember that we only fail
299. 10:48when we give up.
300. 10:49No matter how hard we get hit, we must
301. 10:51keep moving forward.
302. 10:53This is something we're going to have to
303. 10:54remember in the near future
304. 10:56because the road ahead is not easy.
305. 10:58We're going to experience hardship.
306. 10:59We're going to get hurt.
307. 11:01Things are going to happen that aren't
308. 11:02fair. Life is cruel, and it's so easy to
309. 11:04bear a grudge, to give hate in return.
310. 11:07But we cannot give up, and above all
311. 11:09else, we must stay kind.
312. 11:11It's the only line of defense we have
313. 11:12against the cruel realities of the world
314. 11:14we live in.
315. 11:15It's the only way we'll be able to make
316. 11:17things better for ourselves and for
317. 11:18those that come after us, but it's so
318. 11:20easy to forget.
319. 11:22We've all mistreated others. We know how
320. 11:24easy it is to act selfishly.
321. 11:26We But we are Vance's graduating class
322. 11:28of 2020. We can do better.
323. 11:30We can be kind.
324. 11:32When we were children, we were told we
325. 11:34were often told stories of stories of
326. 11:35heroes.
327. 11:37Those rare human beings who make history
328. 11:38instead of simply allowing it to pass
329. 11:40them by.
330. 11:42People who are tender-hearted, people
331. 11:44who are valiant,
332. 11:45people who are tenacious.
333. 11:48Pe- mhm, today we are no longer
334. 11:49children. Today we become heroes.
335. 11:52We become the people that others look
336. 11:54to.
337. 11:55We no longer look to others for
338. 11:56inspiration.
339. 11:58Today we will not only celebrate what we
340. 12:00have accomplished, but we will celebrate
341. 12:02the successes that we will have in the
342. 12:03near future.
343. 12:05I'm honored to call you all my peers,
344. 12:07and congratulations class of 2020.
345. 12:11And now, join us in recognition of the
346. 12:13senior class of Zebulon B. Vance High
