  1. 0:02breakfast morning everybody is DJ envy
  2. 0:06Angela Yee Charlemagne the guy we are
  3. 0:09The Breakfast Club gotta special guest
  4. 0:10in the building yes sir now we always
  5. 0:12seen a central park they feel when they
  6. 0:15see his name on the Central Park five
  7. 0:17that's what I know and now he's too
  8. 0:19young man the story was based off your
  9. 0:21lives so yusuf solemn that I said I
  10. 0:24write Salaam Salaam and Korey wise
  11. 0:26welcome sir can I ask you our brothers a
  12. 0:28question do y'all feel seen yet I
  13. 0:30think's I think now is yeah we're on a
  14. 0:33different Plateau now you know the whole
  15. 0:35globe is responding in blogger again and
  16. 0:38wanting to understand what happened
  17. 0:40especially as relates to the hashtag
  18. 0:42this is America kind of thing you know
  19. 0:44what's been happening in black and brown
  20. 0:46communities has been has been crazy but
  21. 0:50then you see this film when they see us
  22. 0:51and it's like oh this happened to the
  23. 0:53formerly known as Central Park five
  24. 0:55right but this is what's happening to
  25. 0:58black and brown people all around the
  26. 0:59globe right and so America is this petri
  27. 1:02dish of of you know I call it the
  28. 1:04criminal system of injustice you know
  29. 1:06that's the best thing about social media
  30. 1:08and everything that's going on and
  31. 1:10creating movies and Netflix and all
  32. 1:11these these these outlets I grew up in
  33. 1:14it so I lived it in I experienced it
  34. 1:16being from Queens and we seen it and
  35. 1:18we've seen the effect of media and the
  36. 1:21ads that Donald Trump took out but then
  37. 1:23you forget about it like lost it for for
  38. 1:25I don't even know how many years when he
  39. 1:26is yes thirty years thirty years now the
  40. 1:28fact that it's back and now is it can be
  41. 1:30documented and something that we can
  42. 1:31look at all and see how did you just do
  43. 1:35judicial system really affects this and
  44. 1:37takes advantage of our you you think
  45. 1:39about how those ads at Donald Trump took
  46. 1:40out also harms the whole situation like
  47. 1:43that should have been illegal of him
  48. 1:45asking them to bring back the death
  49. 1:46penalty and you know he still hasn't
  50. 1:49wrong right not at all but you know
  51. 1:52what's crazy about that right this ad
  52. 1:54this ad was taken out two weeks after we
  53. 1:58were accused we weren't even we weren't
  54. 2:00we hadn't even gone to trial yet mmm and
  55. 2:03so they looked at us and said oh yeah
  56. 2:04Cory looks like a rapist Yusef looks
  57. 2:08like a rapist Antron Kevin Raymond you
  58. 2:11don't have same date bait what they look
  59. 2:12like right black
  60. 2:13a black man a black man a person with
  61. 2:15this skin color if they're accused
  62. 2:17they're not they're not accused they're
  63. 2:19actually the culprit and that's the
  64. 2:20biggest problem of the criminal justice
  65. 2:22system they look at people and
  66. 2:24automatically cache judgment this man
  67. 2:27took out eighty five thousand dollars of
  68. 2:29his own money to pay for these ads to
  69. 2:31run in New York City's newspapers that's
  70. 2:33a lot that was a lot of money then
  71. 2:34that's a lot of money not money a lot of
  72. 2:35folks don't have eighty five thousand
  73. 2:36dollars sitting in the bank you know and
  74. 2:38so for him to do that it gave a nod to
  75. 2:41everybody in darkest place of society to
  76. 2:44then think about what can we do to these
  77. 2:46guys Pat Buchanan started writing about
  78. 2:48quarry in the papers he said let's take
  79. 2:51the eldest one and hang him from a tree
  80. 2:52in Central Park now you look at the
  81. 2:55series and you realize quarry wasn't
  82. 2:57even one he wasn't even a suspect right
  83. 2:59and two he became the magic that freed
  84. 3:02us he went down there for the support he
  85. 3:04came down a few right you know I mean
  86. 3:07and that's such an honorable noble thing
  87. 3:09man I always have this guy's back that
  88. 3:21you anticipate could happen because
  89. 3:23before that you're not thinking okay I'm
  90. 3:26gonna go down and see what's going on
  91. 3:27and then I'm gonna end up somehow
  92. 3:28getting accused of something because I'm
  93. 3:30sure you knew he didn't do anything
  94. 3:31wrong also yeah so I'm sure that that
  95. 3:35was nothing that you would anticipate
  96. 3:36you think that the legal systems in
  97. 3:38place to actually protect you and then
  98. 3:40you get down there and they did
  99. 3:42everything that you're not supposed to
  100. 3:43do now are those practices still legal
  101. 3:45today where you can actually they
  102. 3:48starved you they family members away
  103. 3:51from you [ __ ] happens right now
  104. 3:53you know it's you know what's what what
  105. 3:55the real law is the real law is white
  106. 3:59supremacy white male dominance that's
  107. 4:01the only law that is recognized in
  108. 4:03America I said all the time
  109. 4:04all white men have been the parasites at
  110. 4:06his country did a problem with this
  111. 4:07country and he [ __ ] up law even now
  112. 4:09from the abortion bill that everything
  113. 4:11is cuz of old white men talk about it
  114. 4:13man that's what it is and that's a
  115. 4:14problem I see one of the beautiful most
  116. 4:17beautiful things about this is that we
  117. 4:20survive this he did almost 14 years Cori
  118. 4:24what did your parents say when you went
  119. 4:26down there
  120. 4:27and they said you had nothing to do with
  121. 4:28this but you coming down here for your
  122. 4:30friend what did your parents say at that
  123. 4:33time
  124. 4:33oh she even know that I was dead she
  125. 4:36just heard I was there same but about
  126. 4:39Tom for her to catch up to me I was
  127. 4:40already gone hmm an ally
  128. 4:44I get the feeling Cory that whenever you
  129. 4:46you know I'll even see you on TV and so
  130. 4:47I was like it's still hard for you to
  131. 4:49talk about this stuff to a degree but at
  132. 4:52the same time it becomes therapy to me
  133. 4:55you guys all watch it together for the
  134. 4:57first time right yeah no that was that
  135. 5:01was hot I was without without route or
  136. 5:04anatomic ribbing
  137. 5:05being there with us at the time because
  138. 5:07the loss of his mother yeah but that was
  139. 5:10one of the hardest things I think to
  140. 5:11watch because there was already the
  141. 5:14assumption there we already knew what
  142. 5:15everybody went through already I said
  143. 5:17you know what should my time was like
  144. 5:19this
  145. 5:19Cory's time probably was like that as
  146. 5:21well and then when we saw it and we got
  147. 5:23an opportunity to see Cory's portrayal
  148. 5:28in this in this awesome film when they
  149. 5:31see us it blew our mind right but he was
  150. 5:34in real hell we was in paradise hmm I
  151. 5:37mean that's how I described like we was
  152. 5:39in I was in maximum a security youth
  153. 5:41facilities he was in gladiator school
  154. 5:44everybody knows Rikers Island we're
  155. 5:45right to around the globe right I mean
  156. 5:50so pretty much as I find myself learning
  157. 5:52from the documentary up to now this
  158. 5:56would be well yeah we Idol but I was
  159. 5:59feeling from him and I was inside mm-hmm
  160. 6:01I've haven't been learning from the
  161. 6:03documentary documentary which one being
  162. 6:06in there I know now I understand what my
  163. 6:10son was coming from hmm and that's hard
  164. 6:13because it was like you know you you you
  165. 6:15said one day recently you said this
  166. 6:18right here was Donald Trump placing a
  167. 6:21bounty on our heads
  168. 6:22absolutely and all of the hell that he
  169. 6:25experienced all of the the fact that he
  170. 6:27had to fight for his life for real you
  171. 6:29see them saying um sure you say that you
  172. 6:33this is life after death for you yeah
  173. 6:35you say that that Corey died in prison
  174. 6:37you see them saying so the
  175. 6:40even the emergence of who Corey is now
  176. 6:44is like I've heard him say man he's
  177. 6:46fighting for the quarry that couldn't
  178. 6:48fight he's fighting for those quarries
  179. 6:50do you forgive everybody involved the
  180. 6:53woman to processes let's people say
  181. 6:56forgiving is the best therapy or things
  182. 6:58like that do you forgive as of lately
  183. 7:12when they showed the new the new 30
  184. 7:16years later 20 20 did I find myself
  185. 7:21looking at all the players involved and
  186. 7:24even she didn't she didn't have nothing
  187. 7:27to do with the rest of it
  188. 7:29oh she I do just here but about braised
  189. 7:32potatoes and keep it moving but she
  190. 7:35stuck around for the rest talk about the
  191. 7:39victim herself and I found myself
  192. 7:42getting an extra from her know as far as
  193. 7:45the lawsuit and everything and some
  194. 7:48Supreme Court is she like well I felt at
  195. 7:51a the judge should've waited besides
  196. 7:56nothing to do with you you got your
  197. 7:59little money just has nothing to do with
  198. 8:00you already found out who my elated you
  199. 8:03my state of mind keep all for that don't
  200. 8:07know don't be don't get extra with that
  201. 8:09cuz our hands is not on your dining room
  202. 8:11table don't put yours on our or we get
  203. 8:14so when I'm hearing dad these people
  204. 8:18have so prejudiced man you just Falls I
  205. 8:23concern in the eye you just belong on
  206. 8:25welfare you stay on welfare mmm
  207. 8:28everyone's white kids I believe we
  208. 8:32should give them more so that's why I
  209. 8:34got from them so so long so every son
  210. 8:37from now you know as far as all the
  211. 8:39Knockouts was concerned I get it from
  212. 8:43the world's famous picture where Ali and
  213. 8:46I think sunny listeners on him and he
  214. 8:48was on the ground so that's what the
  215. 8:50movie is doing to the system there's
  216. 8:51knocking everybody out
  217. 8:52yeah yeah
  218. 8:54not in the mouth it's taking them out as
  219. 8:57I find myself learning the district
  220. 8:59attorney passed away before his
  221. 9:01hundredth birthday so I'm I was glad
  222. 9:04that he overturned it and took it to his
  223. 9:08grave with her mm-hmm because if he
  224. 9:10overturned it it been about another 30
  225. 9:1440 more years for another District
  226. 9:16Attorney to overturn the case houses Wow
  227. 9:19how did it affect y'all personally that
  228. 9:21the judicial system is still flawed so
  229. 9:24many years after y'all wrongful
  230. 9:26conviction what I think to echo what
  231. 9:28Corey saying you know we're looking at a
  232. 9:30victim who's white who in her privilege
  233. 9:34bug in her victimhood there's still
  234. 9:36privilege you see them saying and so
  235. 9:39everything is pointed to the fact that
  236. 9:40we had nothing to do with it but yet her
  237. 9:43doctors are saying but your injuries are
  238. 9:44more consistent with a gang rape like
  239. 9:48the DNA deoxyribonucleic acid proved
  240. 9:50that we didn't do nothing
  241. 9:51we had nothing to do with this you know
  242. 9:53and so I felt like this this there's so
  243. 9:56much that we still have to do there's so
  244. 9:59many future generations that we have to
  245. 10:01affect we got to plant seeds in their
  246. 10:04minds and in their hearts so that they
  247. 10:06understand that they are the answers
  248. 10:08that we seek
  249. 10:09you know what I'm saying so we go around
  250. 10:10the country we go around the world and
  251. 10:12we speak we've done it as individuals
  252. 10:14we've done it collectively you don't I'm
  253. 10:16saying I started a company called Yusef
  254. 10:17speaks you know I serve I sell my
  255. 10:19merchandise which is like my poetry book
  256. 10:21I sell my hats I sell shirts
  257. 10:23I saw all kinds of things and I'm coming
  258. 10:25out with a lot more stuff I've created
  259. 10:26this right here this is what I call like
  260. 10:29the freedom medal you don't I'm saying
  261. 10:30the only thing that I need to change
  262. 10:32about this is even though it says cp5 I
  263. 10:34need to change it on the bottom to
  264. 10:36exonerate it five or and I want to marry
  265. 10:39those two because the reality is that I
  266. 10:41what they did to us as a people and
  267. 10:43continue to do is I our friend and
  268. 10:48teacher dr. Angela Davis she said we as
  269. 10:51a people have historical amnesia but the
  270. 10:54fact that the matter is that we've been
  271. 10:56socialized not to know they keep
  272. 10:59information from us that's right so that
  273. 11:02as we look at the landscape we say damn
  274. 11:04this is brand-new man they just started
  275. 11:06shooting people in the back know they've
  276. 11:07been doing
  277. 11:08in all communities for years this is
  278. 11:10America this is the criminal system of
  279. 11:12injustice is how things have been and so
  280. 11:15we have a long way to go but I feel like
  281. 11:17we're knocking it down like Cory said we
  282. 11:19got them on the roasts because the whole
  283. 11:21globe is beginning to respond to what's
  284. 11:23going on right merica they're responding
  285. 11:25to this case but this case is a
  286. 11:27microcosm of the macrocosm of cases just
  287. 11:30like it this is only the one maybe one
  288. 11:32of the most famous examples of cases
  289. 11:35just like this and for people who didn't
  290. 11:37know about it from you know the next
  291. 11:38generation that weren't alive and were
  292. 11:40inexperienced in this in New York when
  293. 11:42it happened
  294. 11:43the docu-series actually brought so much
  295. 11:45attention and you know people that had
  296. 11:48no idea what happened with that story
  297. 11:49people still thought because Donald
  298. 11:50Trump still won't say that you guys
  299. 11:52weren't guilty they thought that they
  300. 11:54like they just had no idea what the true
  301. 11:56story was behind it yeah so for yourself
  302. 11:58doing this docu-series for you guys and
  303. 12:00seeing it get nominated for what 16 16
  304. 12:0416 I mean we gonna be at the Emmys on
  305. 12:07Sunday and seeing that it was like what
  306. 12:11the best the best docu-series the
  307. 12:14most-watched docu-series on Netflix yes
  308. 12:16ever seeing it break all those records
  309. 12:19right what does that mean to you man it
  310. 12:24was all a dream yeah I appear to be you
  311. 12:29know just a beautiful beautiful sight to
  312. 12:34see that are better people they they
  313. 12:40bond and they be getting of the order in
  314. 12:43the flood and join the fray and
  315. 12:45something new today
  316. 12:47and it just enjoying I'm just glad that
  317. 12:51uh be there what was the first thing you
  318. 12:54guys did when you when you guys got out
  319. 12:55mmm and they released you what was the
  320. 12:57first thing so you know we came out
  321. 12:59staggered right
  322. 13:00and by staggered I'm talking about a
  323. 13:01long stack right I came out seven years
  324. 13:03later he came out 14 years later my
  325. 13:06first day out I tried on all my old
  326. 13:10clothes I could still fit it I put on a
  327. 13:12triple fashion column it wasn't stabbed
  328. 13:15and my sister saw me she was like yo
  329. 13:17where that it looks good for don't wait
  330. 13:19I literally had the triple fat goose
  331. 13:20with the fur on the collar and I'm
  332. 13:22checking myself out in the mirror like
  333. 13:23man i'ma wear this you know to say and
  334. 13:25then I came across this right here I
  335. 13:28came across a box of letters that I had
  336. 13:31never seen before a lot of them had no
  337. 13:35return address but they were sent to us
  338. 13:37we all we all received this stuff but
  339. 13:40then I picked up one and as I'm reading
  340. 13:42it I realized my mother had received
  341. 13:46this type of stuff while we were first
  342. 13:49arrested and she had been dealing with
  343. 13:51the prison of what it's like to be in be
  344. 13:54free like be be a parent and have a
  345. 13:56loved one in prison right that was a
  346. 13:58hard thing this was this letter right
  347. 14:00here just to kind of give you an idea of
  348. 14:02my reality when I came home this letter
  349. 14:05says to use of Salaam this letters to
  350. 14:07let you know that your name has been
  351. 14:09placed on the list of enemies of society
  352. 14:11by the citizens army New York City
  353. 14:13branch you became you made a decision
  354. 14:15when you became one of the pack that
  355. 14:17decided that Central Park was your arena
  356. 14:19and decided to attack and violate honest
  357. 14:22citizens who happen to be in the park
  358. 14:24now this is the part that's a kicker so
  359. 14:26just remember that even 20 to 30 years
  360. 14:30from now some of us will never forget
  361. 14:32and maybe the one time that you don't
  362. 14:34check your back is the one time that
  363. 14:37somebody might just be there to say
  364. 14:38hello hmm and so you think about like
  365. 14:41where we are in in the country in the
  366. 14:43Donald Trump this is Donald Trump some
  367. 14:45yeah this is an America where herida
  368. 14:47resident yeah absolutely this isn't a
  369. 14:49ratio I mean at the end of the day
  370. 14:51people are people show sides
  371. 14:54they've always picked sides and we've
  372. 14:56been the ones that they've already said
  373. 14:58you know what we're expendable
  374. 15:00absolutely and on you a mutant animal
  375. 15:02with no conscience but that was this was
  376. 15:05sent to all of us McCrory what was the
  377. 15:06first thing that you did when you when
  378. 15:08you got on top so I thought a roof over
  379. 15:13my head
  380. 15:13mmm-hmm roof over my head and and and
  381. 15:18just pretty much from there just how to
  382. 15:21find me where's my mother and we're from
  383. 15:29there
  384. 15:33what's my brothers my brothers are my
  385. 15:35brothers part of town he couldn't deal
  386. 15:38with me the Scrambler he couldn't deal
  387. 15:43with you cuz you was still you still had
  388. 15:44at the jail mentality could've been or
  389. 15:46just he does not have he just not used
  390. 15:49to having having a kid around no I don't
  391. 15:51mean no but he's just you know I'm
  392. 15:54hearing but as I was hammering all the
  393. 15:56negative coming from him it was just
  394. 15:58building me up okay so me somehow I got
  395. 16:02you
  396. 16:03and I just does this this it was rough
  397. 16:09it was rough for me to get where I'm at
  398. 16:11today so pretty much why I'm at today
  399. 16:14you know just that's how me people feel
  400. 16:17it now
  401. 16:18it helped me not can't help you you took
  402. 16:22a lot of loss in prison to record you
  403. 16:24lost your sister and ain't a girlfriend
  404. 16:26right now they both died yeah did you
  405. 16:29ever get a chance to properly grieve
  406. 16:30either one of them no no no I guess my
  407. 16:36only way of my only way of grieving
  408. 16:39would be just watching a movie
  409. 16:41mmm that's wrong if I don't watch it
  410. 16:44like that so when I do watch it it
  411. 16:46becomes brand new to me and I'm gonna
  412. 16:48become brand new to me and maybe one
  413. 16:50look at my brother here just punch him
  414. 16:51in his shoulder I mean but that's real
  415. 16:55talk because at the end of the day his
  416. 16:57pain came from the decision that he made
  417. 17:00to come down to be my ace and all right
  418. 17:02but you know not understanding anything
  419. 17:04about the law a lot of times now if we
  420. 17:07see somebody being arrested or something
  421. 17:09like that we like yeah we know our
  422. 17:10rights right no we start talking to the
  423. 17:12cops but Miranda says you have the right
  424. 17:15to remain silent anything you say can
  425. 17:17and will be used against you in a court
  426. 17:20of law if you fail to remain silent and
  427. 17:22so not even not even being wise enough
  428. 17:25to understand the the the the chess move
  429. 17:30that was being played on us you see them
  430. 17:32saying yeah and I and it's so crazy for
  431. 17:34me because I feel so I'm this is my
  432. 17:39brother and I'm indebted to him in a way
  433. 17:42that is
  434. 17:43indescribable right because not only did
  435. 17:46he make the decision to come down but
  436. 17:49when you see the when you see the series
  437. 17:51you've realized that people aren't built
  438. 17:54the way he was built right it's still
  439. 17:55his bill right they came to get him at
  440. 17:57one point he's in his cell and they said
  441. 18:00hey man get ready we're going to your
  442. 18:02parole hearing and he's like no I'm not
  443. 18:04going
  444. 18:05and like you're not going he said no if
  445. 18:08they don't want to hear my truth I don't
  446. 18:10want to waste my time like imagine if he
  447. 18:14would have said let me just say anything
  448. 18:16to get out of here the story never would
  449. 18:19have been told we just still had this
  450. 18:21cloud of suspicion over our heads he
  451. 18:25bumped into the real dude that did it
  452. 18:27you know I'm saying like I look at it
  453. 18:30from a more spiritual perspective that
  454. 18:32everybody that was supposed to be
  455. 18:34players in this was in the right
  456. 18:36position when you bumped into that do
  457. 18:38hmm what was your mentality then cuz it
  458. 18:43had to be I'm Achilles [ __ ] if you kill
  459. 18:46him you won't be able to first thing
  460. 18:48that's on your mind like you got me here
  461. 18:56it's two times that he ran into him no
  462. 18:59so that's the thing like first time when
  463. 19:01I run away when I came across when I
  464. 19:02came across Reyes I came across Reyes
  465. 19:07when I was sitting in the day room
  466. 19:09watching TV on the island he came
  467. 19:14through after he came nobody can't when
  468. 19:17I saw it is just talk he's beginning to
  469. 19:19talk about his rap sheet what he did so
  470. 19:22I'm looking at now I recognize a few
  471. 19:24other officers I was behind her and I'm
  472. 19:28like you know the thought came to me
  473. 19:29once how could he have something to do
  474. 19:30with this hair but that was it until
  475. 19:34before we fought in the dayroom about TV
  476. 19:38because I watch her about the Y's Video
  477. 19:40Music Box at the time ralphie game and
  478. 19:44he was looking for he was looking for
  479. 19:47the Spanish station and before let's do
  480. 19:52a scarf from hell
  481. 19:53Thank You various and uh shortly after
  482. 19:57that
  483. 19:58don't over shut that had caught up to
  484. 20:00him of State and Auburn I'm getting oak
  485. 20:04I'm getting no quarantine and Albarn is
  486. 20:09like Oh God
  487. 20:12it's like a it's like a 70s movie
  488. 20:15everything everything everything
  489. 20:17everything is in a yard so you got to go
  490. 20:20to yard to get what you gotta get and
  491. 20:23it's saying something you come to when
  492. 20:24you go to the yard you got about 20
  493. 20:27about 20,000 people out there in the
  494. 20:30yard wait this don't know and when I was
  495. 20:35coming through my property
  496. 20:36I saw a is playing stickball and you
  497. 20:41know wasn't repetitive panting oh my boy
  498. 20:43he's having a good time and like I said
  499. 20:44I guess rumor got to him was the wisest
  500. 20:52in the area he's in the Builder so
  501. 20:59everybody's in program one day if I was
  502. 21:03in program anybody's coming out of
  503. 21:06program so point everybody's coming out
  504. 21:09of program so like it I got saved where
  505. 21:13anybody's coming out of program the
  506. 21:14whole the whole morning y'all look like
  507. 21:17the late afternoon late afternoon
  508. 21:20wrecked hominy in the yard so a bison
  509. 21:23you're about good 30 about click 30,000
  510. 21:26of us in the yard so Reyes sees me on
  511. 21:30the basketball court he comes my way
  512. 21:34when he comes my way to go you guys I
  513. 21:38said wanna know Sammy I said mom pose
  514. 21:42recognized you from so Rikers Island no
  515. 21:45we had a fight over the TV

  517. 21:50with you breathe I will go there with
  518. 21:52you ring it's 13 years late about so I'm
  519. 21:54like oh so he's just talking why you
  520. 21:57still got the scar on your face right I
  521. 21:59wanna I wanna I wanna I wanna do this
  522. 22:02with you now
  523. 22:03so he's still talking to me kickin it
  524. 22:07with me
  525. 22:07he's going over my head but I'm catching
  526. 22:09it a little bit
  527. 22:10Oh yo you religious I said now I'm not
  528. 22:13neutral so you just come come to the
  529. 22:17chapel area I'd be down there I say okay
  530. 22:19one day so the door opened up sorry
  531. 22:23about time to glass they see each other
  532. 22:25when we see each other so it's time to
  533. 22:27go guys after the cell so you say about
  534. 22:31the next day I had went to breakfast it
  535. 22:36was a heavy gray cloud in the mess hall
  536. 22:39mi was looking a buddy was looking at
  537. 22:41each other but more so it's like 90
  538. 22:43percent looking at me something grabbed
  539. 22:45my breakfast to get out of here I ain't
  540. 22:47trying to eat nope cuz everytime
  541. 22:50everywhere every every way I walked was
  542. 22:55somethin goin down fite something is
  543. 22:59always something someone bad and then my
  544. 23:09door opened up I had closed it ok that's
  545. 23:13what he doing when everybody get back
  546. 23:15from child
  547. 23:15close the bag don't open up you weren't
  548. 23:22doing it in the chaplains office huh so
  549. 23:25I felt like it felt like a movie like
  550. 23:27whoa no okay I don't think I want to go
  551. 23:29I already know the answer to that so my
  552. 23:32new next-door neighbor like Oh big home
  553. 23:34in Co take a walk down soon let's take a
  554. 23:37walk down and leave it solo Paris okay
  555. 23:39let's see you the blood kiss when went
  556. 23:42down
  557. 23:43there's my mom picked it out and she's
  558. 23:48just hysterical I remember so you know a
  559. 23:54guy who you ran that ran into you up
  560. 23:58there with you when he loved you so much
  561. 24:00he cleared your name I said huh he
  562. 24:03cleared your name okay and then I can
  563. 24:06say from there my mom's came up there
  564. 24:10with a few people from channel 7 that
  565. 24:14they had that phone conversation with
  566. 24:17mr. Reyes
  567. 24:19then they farm so moving ray is out but
  568. 24:23they didn't they didn't what they
  569. 24:24skeletons to be exposed by John seven so
  570. 24:27they moved them to move them to Clinton
  571. 24:30down the mall so we talked and and it
  572. 24:39was just good so how you want how you
  573. 24:42want to do that sir ready to come on
  574. 24:43whatever so I had to come home warm
  575. 24:46parole so I came home or parole it was
  576. 24:50good it was a beautiful feeling I gotta
  577. 24:55leave yeah I got a part of me but you
  578. 24:56know thank you guys okay and the reason
  579. 24:59I say thank you is because you opened up
  580. 25:00a conversation when Ava was here Ava
  581. 25:03Duvernay was here we opened up a
  582. 25:04conversation to help teach these you
  583. 25:06just teach kids what to do when they get
  584. 25:09pulled over what they need to say what
  585. 25:11they need to watch out for and what they
  586. 25:12need to be careful for and even the
  587. 25:14parents what they can do a lot of times
  588. 25:16that conversation has not had in our
  589. 25:18community you know we always want to
  590. 25:20give the middle finger we always try to
  591. 25:21talk ourselves out out of a situation
  592. 25:22but sometimes like you said it's being
  593. 25:25quiet is the best way to get ourselves
  594. 25:26some do you and thank you guys man
  595. 25:28thank you listens how did it was
  596. 25:31depiction of the story changed our life
  597. 25:32this far wow I think in a good way
  598. 25:36because she was able to take this story
  599. 25:39that all of the all of the negative
  600. 25:43players meaning like the system she was
  601. 25:45able to take the story and turn it
  602. 25:47inside out so that people can see the
  603. 25:48humanized version of us to understand
  604. 25:51what was really at stake that we didn't
  605. 25:53deserve that that we literally had a
  606. 25:55huge chunk of our lives taken away from
  607. 25:57us and a lot of us do
  608. 25:59and here we came back and we were able
  609. 26:03to survive somehow
  610. 26:04you know I didn't know the details
  611. 26:06either right and the details was the
  612. 26:08stuff that they didn't want you to know
  613. 26:09on purpose because they wanted people to
  614. 26:11think just like the jogger right they
  615. 26:14wanted everybody to think including the
  616. 26:16jogger that they had done their job
  617. 26:18right there case closed we saw this case
  618. 26:21yeah but they were so they were so
  619. 26:23invested with this case and here it is
  620. 26:27all of our families all of the people
  621. 26:29that was supporting us was like you got
  622. 26:30the wrong guys these guys didn't do it
  623. 26:32you had Kevin Richardson who was picked
  624. 26:34up that night with Raymond Santana no
  625. 26:37four wins I mean he had
  626. 26:38Kevin saying that she scratched him
  627. 26:40there's no forensic evidence underneath
  628. 26:42her fingernails like no skin from Kevin
  629. 26:45is underneath her fingernails there's no
  630. 26:47evidence that anybody was in the park
  631. 26:49near this woman
  632. 26:50but yeah you're painting this picture
  633. 26:52like you've got the right people and
  634. 26:55because they got stuck with that lie
  635. 26:58there could have been a young pregnant
  636. 27:00Latino woman who was his next victim she
  637. 27:03could have been alive today absolutely
  638. 27:04her unborn child could have been
  639. 27:06absolutely that's why I never understood
  640. 27:08I'm like wouldn't it benefit the
  641. 27:10community for you to actually go get the
  642. 27:11right person but this is America this is
  643. 27:16how the justice system always operates
  644. 27:18you know what I'm saying and if they do
  645. 27:19get the right person right the right
  646. 27:22person I mean if you happen to have a
  647. 27:25name like Dylan roof right and they come
  648. 27:27and get you
  649. 27:28you get some Birkin they take you to
  650. 27:29Burger King you know they catch you
  651. 27:31alive right and the crazy thing is he
  652. 27:34would have never confessed right if
  653. 27:36Reyes would have never said it was him
  654. 27:37you guys names might never have they
  655. 27:40would have never cleared and you got to
  656. 27:41think how many people are still in that
  657. 27:42situation who didn't commit a crime in
  658. 27:44jail and then it's not even just once
  659. 27:47you get out you have that record but
  660. 27:48people really believe that you are a
  661. 27:51rapist yeah
  662. 27:52it Reyes I just made a sneak out it is I
  663. 27:57out of my brain it Reyes resident had
  664. 28:03governor Pataki at that time his State
  665. 28:07of Mind was for his bro his parole board
  666. 28:11if these if these guy if this guy here
  667. 28:16or if this if this guy here don't comply
  668. 28:21with his programs the parole board was
  669. 28:24allowed to hit you passionate max I said
  670. 28:28huh so anybody that they had a serious
  671. 28:32case going on and they would be they had
  672. 28:34refused to a special program there the
  673. 28:38parole board just had a history passion
  674. 28:40max so so my time was not so big I came
  675. 28:45in in with father fits in so my time
  676. 28:47when I had been 15 a life yeah
  677. 28:51they've raised whenever this is the
  678. 28:52crazy part and then you got out with
  679. 28:55still on parole yeah even though I came
  680. 28:57home I came on parole but it was it was
  681. 29:01it was it was thinking about uh don't
  682. 29:06ankle brace wrong me and they said uh I
  683. 29:09think we did I think we did hear
  684. 29:10something north on the Ray is coming for
  685. 29:14four so normally we won't let the wall
  686. 29:16let's leave that alone for now no Valen
  687. 29:18will give you no bracelet just every two
  688. 29:22weeks this come true until we tell you
  689. 29:25not to come through no more wow I'm
  690. 29:30looking at all them letters man
  691. 29:31somebody's anyone to castrate you oh
  692. 29:33yeah yeah when did that ever stop that
  693. 29:36hate mail I think it changed I mean I
  694. 29:39think I feel like there's a lot more
  695. 29:41supporters now than there were back then
  696. 29:44even when we came home from prison it
  697. 29:45wasn't popular to be one of us we took
  698. 29:47that Central Park jogger brand and we
  699. 29:50rose to the occasion and was like yeah
  700. 29:52we're one of them you know I'm saying
  701. 29:53and so we took it and made it like a
  702. 29:55cape frost you know a superpower whereas
  703. 29:58there was a lot of folks who even to
  704. 30:00this day I'm telling people about Donald
  705. 30:02Trump and they're like nah he's not like
  706. 30:04that
  707. 30:04yeah eyes you your eyes are lying to you
  708. 30:07because we've seen all kind of other
  709. 30:09stuff that has been going on but this
  710. 30:11right here he did this and in here he
  711. 30:14says something like and this is this is
  712. 30:15kind of like after you read the bulk of
  713. 30:18it he says criminals must be told that
  714. 30:20there's civil liberties in one attack on
  715. 30:23our safety begins if through the
  716. 30:25Thirteenth Amendment they're looking at
  717. 30:27black and brown folks that clearly
  718. 30:29states that we can turn you back to a
  719. 30:31slave for the punishment and so if
  720. 30:33they're looking at brown black and brown
  721. 30:34folks as the criminal element and who is
  722. 30:37who is he talking about the our civil
  723. 30:41liberties is the constituents that don't
  724. 30:44look like absolutely what would you say
  725. 30:46to Linda Fierstein now if you had if you
  726. 30:49could say something to her for her to
  727. 30:50here suck a dick hmm
  728. 30:53[Laughter]
  729. 31:00oh I guess I would say basically take
  730. 31:05and for saving my life I don't know how
  731. 31:08my life would have turned out you know
  732. 31:11man what do you mean by it uh what do
  733. 31:13you mean by that wait you think she
  734. 31:14saved your life
  735. 31:19because she put me in the toilet in the
  736. 31:21best situation and at the same time when
  737. 31:25I'm me being a kid I don't know how my
  738. 31:27time with my life would I had talked to
  739. 31:28her about graduate from high school
  740. 31:31college work so she does know I guess
  741. 31:36she just she put she just put easy easy
  742. 31:38money in my pocket mmm but huh messing
  743. 31:41up yeah but she took away a lot a lot of

  745. 31:52when I spoke before and I said we were

  751. 32:05you don't know saying you look at a
  752. 32:07person like Linda fasting and you've
  753. 32:10realized she Elizabeth lettera
  754. 32:13the officers that were involved the
  755. 32:16media that that wrote the story in a way
  756. 32:19that made sure that the public opinion
  757. 32:20was swayed to make sure we got convicted

  764. 32:37them a fighting chance and she says this
  765. 32:40is not about law anymore this is about
  766. 32:42politics so they're talking about
  767. 32:44whether you live or die they're talking
  768. 32:46about building their careers off of our
  769. 32:48backs what I want people to understand
  770. 32:50is that look at where we are now 30
  771. 32:53years later nobody would have ever
  772. 32:54thought that this truth would have came
  773. 32:56out and that everybody else that was
  774. 32:59involved not only are we trying to find
  775. 33:01out what went wrong with the Central
  776. 33:03Park jogger case but we're trying to
  777. 33:05figure out what other cases did they did
