  1. 0:00the YouTube Insider just revealed three
  2. 0:02ways the algorithm actually works and
  3. 0:04what I found interesting is how it act
  4. 0:06like switches inside of a platform that
  5. 0:08when triggered will push your content to
  6. 0:10thousands of new viewers and subscribers
  7. 0:13you see my guess is you spend hours
  8. 0:15crafting every single video that you
  9. 0:17post on YouTube you pour your heart and
  10. 0:19your soul into the ideas you pick the
  11. 0:21scripts you write the videos you film
  12. 0:23the content you edit y every single time
  13. 0:26you hit publish you're disappointed with
  14. 0:28a result but why
  15. 0:30why are your videos failing when you
  16. 0:32feel you're doing everything the
  17. 0:34so-called experts tell you well what if
  18. 0:36I told you it's got nothing to do with
  19. 0:38you as a Creator the niche that you've
  20. 0:40picked or the amount of effort you put
  21. 0:42into your videos and instead the real
  22. 0:44problem is a simple lack of
  23. 0:47understanding of how the YouTube
  24. 0:48algorithm Works what the hell are you
  25. 0:50talking about well in this video I'm
  26. 0:52going to try and convince you of that
  27. 0:54I'm going to share with you three
  28. 0:55insights this YouTube Insider revealed
  29. 0:58that going to the Deep mechanics of how
  30. 1:01the YouTube algorithm works and once
  31. 1:03you're aware of these insights you'll be
  32. 1:04able to create content that reaches out
  33. 1:06to brand new audiences and build a
  34. 1:09community around your channel so who is
  35. 1:11this YouTube Insider well his name is
  36. 1:13Todd and he's responsible for the
  37. 1:14homepage and recommendation systems at
  38. 1:16YouTube and he's been working on them
  39. 1:18for over a decade now so if anyone knows
  40. 1:21how the YouTube algorithm works it's
  41. 1:22Todd we as a Creator Community
  42. 1:24appreciate Todd because he's willing to
  43. 1:26put himself out there on video and post
  44. 1:28on social media to talk about how how
  45. 1:30YouTube works and it's these latest
  46. 1:32round of tweets for xers or twixes that
  47. 1:35caught our attention and it starts with
  48. 1:37this the algorithm is triggered by high
  49. 1:40satisfaction content now it makes sense
  50. 1:42the algorithm pushes content that
  51. 1:44clearly satisfies viewers however most
  52. 1:46creators think that this is only
  53. 1:47determined by metrics so we're talking
  54. 1:49about watch time retention likes shares
  55. 1:52comments but this is where Todd revealed
  56. 1:54an important factor that many creators
  57. 1:57basically Miss at the YouTube level a
  58. 1:59user coming back more often and watching
  59. 2:02content they report as valued is a
  60. 2:04strong sign we are improving
  61. 2:06satisfaction what I think Todd is
  62. 2:08hinting at here is that the algorithm
  63. 2:10highly values returning viewers which
  64. 2:13naturally means that you should be
  65. 2:14optimizing your videos so that viewers
  66. 2:17come back and watch more of your content
  67. 2:18in the future which leaves us with a big
  68. 2:20question how do we optimize content so
  69. 2:23that we create return viewers well let's
  70. 2:25take a look at what Todd said the
  71. 2:27audience tab in analytics provides ins
  72. 2:30ites into videos that attracted new
  73. 2:31viewers to your channel who came back to
  74. 2:33watch on another day I think this is a
  75. 2:35good signal for satisfaction along with
  76. 2:37likes subscribers shares and some
  77. 2:39comments the audience tab is like a
  78. 2:41window into your audience's mind where
  79. 2:43you can see what videos are causing
  80. 2:45people to return to your content so
  81. 2:46break down your top videos that created
  82. 2:48the most returned viewers in your
  83. 2:50analytics Tab and ask yourself are there
  84. 2:52any patterns you notice between these
  85. 2:54videos and if fact isn't enough to
  86. 2:56convince you to stop making random
  87. 2:58videos on random topics for a random
  88. 3:00audience then you'll just end up like
  89. 3:10this the second Insight Todd revealed
  90. 3:13was this if you want the algorithm to
  91. 3:14push your videos you need to create a
  92. 3:16community feedback Council which I'll
  93. 3:18come back to in a minute the reason this
  94. 3:19is so powerful is that it gives you a
  95. 3:21potent set of ideas that resonate
  96. 3:24greatly with your audience which means
  97. 3:26that they're always going to be coming
  98. 3:27back to watch more of your content I
  99. 3:28haven't shared the story before but when
  100. 3:30the world was coming out of the covid
  101. 3:32lockdown and more people were touching
  102. 3:33grass the vid IQ YouTube channel was
  103. 3:36really struggling views were way down
  104. 3:38there were as many people subscribing
  105. 3:39and it was a really big headache to try
  106. 3:41and figure out I mean here we are trying
  107. 3:43to guide creators to grow their channels
  108. 3:45and our channel was shrinking so what
  109. 3:47did we do we turned to our community for
  110. 3:50feedback we used the community tab we
  111. 3:52ran polls we asked questions we doubled
  112. 3:54up our live stream offering from not
  113. 3:56just Channel audits but also video
  114. 3:58Audits and a constant Fe team kept
  115. 4:00coming back to us the majority of our
  116. 4:02audience were small Channels with four
  117. 4:05pain points views subscribers
  118. 4:08monetization and how to understand the
  119. 4:10YouTube algorithm so we made a very
  120. 4:13strategic decision no longer would we
  121. 4:15make content to try and rank number one
  122. 4:16for a particular search T instead we
  123. 4:19packaged our content that tapped into
  124. 4:20the emotional desires stresses struggles
  125. 4:24goals and fears of views monetization
  126. 4:28subscribers The algorithm them in
  127. 4:30essence we switched from a search
  128. 4:32traffic channel to a browse and
  129. 4:34suggested traffic channel and you should
  130. 4:36know by now that 70% of all YouTube
  131. 4:38views come from recommendations not
  132. 4:40search all of which meant we started
  133. 4:42growing again and we were helping more
  134. 4:44creators and we bugged ourselves one of
  135. 4:47these oh I can see you've subscribed
  136. 4:50thank you very much we're Hing to hit 2
  137. 4:52million subscribers by the end of this
  138. 4:54year the tldr of his story is listen to
  139. 4:57your audience because they matter most
  140. 5:00and the audience equals the algorithm
  141. 5:02but Todd's insights take this powerful
  142. 5:04strategy one step further I personally
  143. 5:07Foster a diverse community of fans and
  144. 5:09critics viewers and other creators to
  145. 5:11give me honest feedback about what was
  146. 5:13most and least valued in my videos
  147. 5:16comments are one tool but you have to be
  148. 5:18careful about selection bias especially
  149. 5:20in top comments basically what Todd is
  150. 5:22saying is that you should create a
  151. 5:24tight-knit feedback community and this
  152. 5:26is because contrary to what many people
  153. 5:27believe the algorithm doesn't push
  154. 5:29videos that YouTube wants people to
  155. 5:31watch it pushes videos based on what
  156. 5:34videos viewers are already enjoying
  157. 5:36another Point Todd emphasizes is that
  158. 5:38the aggregate results of what succeeds
  159. 5:40on YouTube is more a reflection of what
  160. 5:43emerges from the experiences of many
  161. 5:45individual viewers versus any
  162. 5:47coordinated strategy by YouTube to
  163. 5:50centrally steer content across viewers
  164. 5:52on mass so R van YouTube Engineers
  165. 5:54typing in a bit of code and changing
  166. 5:56everything determining the fate of your
  167. 5:58videos it is the get millions of inputs
  168. 6:00from every single viewer on the YouTube
  169. 6:02platform that are influencing whether or
  170. 6:05not your content gets discovered so by
  171. 6:07having this community feedback Council
  172. 6:09you're much more likely to make content
  173. 6:11that your audience really enjoys and
  174. 6:13this will naturally an organically lead
  175. 6:16to the algorithm promoting your video
  176. 6:18more to find new audiences but how do
  177. 6:20you create this community feedback
  178. 6:22Council well you can offer your fans and
  179. 6:24critics something for free for regular
  180. 6:26feedback on your videos you can Empower
  181. 6:29your audience by giving them moderation
  182. 6:30privileges during live streams that can
  183. 6:32help represent the viewer opinion of
  184. 6:34your content and steer it in the right
  185. 6:36direction you can set up an exclusive
  186. 6:38Forum or Discord where highly valued
  187. 6:40members of the community are invited to
  188. 6:42share their thoughts or you could try
  189. 6:43setting up a mastermind group of
  190. 6:45likeminded creators who come together
  191. 6:47maybe once a week and offer ideas and
  192. 6:50constructive feedback on each of his
  193. 6:51videos or if you're not quite ready for
  194. 6:53any of these steps yet just start
  195. 6:56posting stuff on that Community tab it
  196. 6:58is so so powerful the last Insight Todd
  197. 7:01revealed is that the algorithm won't
  198. 7:03know what to do with your videos if
  199. 7:04they're not in the goldilock zone to
  200. 7:06explain what I mean we're going to
  201. 7:07divide videos up into three content
  202. 7:09zones the first is content that's hyper
  203. 7:11Niche super specific very targeted
  204. 7:14towards a very particular audience the
  205. 7:16second content zone is completely
  206. 7:18opposite it's trying to appeal to the
  207. 7:19broadest audience possible and the third
  208. 7:21content zone is a balance of the two so
  209. 7:24if your goal is to grow as fast as
  210. 7:26possible and maximize those return
  211. 7:27viewers what's the best Zone to be well
  212. 7:30this is what Todd had to say try your
  213. 7:32best to align with what resonates with
  214. 7:34the audience like with any brand going
  215. 7:36too broad dilutes connection too narrow
  216. 7:39may not achieve enough scale to be
  217. 7:41viable you have to find a balance where
  218. 7:43there is room in your target market the
  219. 7:45examples I've just shown you are from
  220. 7:47content zones one and two which
  221. 7:48typically will stifle growth a typical
  222. 7:51video from Ali adal will expect to get
  223. 7:52hundreds of thousands of views and
  224. 7:54neither of these two came close this is
  225. 7:56because typically the algorithm will
  226. 7:57first test your video with a subset of
  227. 7:59your audience if the content is too
  228. 8:01Niche it may not resonate enough with
  229. 8:03those viewers if it's too broad it may
  230. 8:05not create a strong enough connection
  231. 8:06with those viewers to keep them watching
  232. 8:08but when you find that goldilock zone
  233. 8:10where the balance is perfectly weighted
  234. 8:12between both the results can be amazing
  235. 8:14for example this video is on a topic
  236. 8:16that alli's core audience is proven to
  237. 8:18have a high interest in but it's also
  238. 8:21appealing to a much wider audience that
  239. 8:23may have interest in this topic but
  240. 8:24aren't currently following Ali so how do
  241. 8:26you find this perfectly weighted
  242. 8:28Goldilocks zone well first of all let's
  243. 8:30make sure that your video topics aren't
  244. 8:32too Niche the more specific a video is
  245. 8:34the smaller the target audience so ask
  246. 8:36yourself this question what are the
  247. 8:39common goals dreams and desires of my
  248. 8:41target audience and what are their
  249. 8:43biggest pain points problems obstacles
  250. 8:46start there but make sure that you don't
  251. 8:48go too broad it has to be relatable to
  252. 8:50the audience that you specifically want
  253. 8:52to speak to it's not enough to just make
  254. 8:54videos about losing weight and making
  255. 8:55money everybody wants to do that to make
  256. 8:57topics like this more relatable you have
  257. 8:59to ask why and how your specific
  258. 9:01audience is going to achieve those goals
  259. 9:03and continue to test ideas and when you
  260. 9:05find one that works use that as your
  261. 9:07yard stick to work off of for all future
  262. 9:09videos by simply adjusting your content
  263. 9:11ideas you can double even triple your
  264. 9:13view counts not by putting in any extra
  265. 9:16effort but just more thought and in this
  266. 9:18video we've revealed how the definitive
  267. 9:21expert on YouTube algorithm recommends
  268. 9:23you do this but if you want a detailed
  269. 9:25explanation on how to come up with viral
  270. 9:28ideas that really heat up the algorithm
  271. 9:30in your favor and I suggest you watch
  272. 9:33this video next
