Your Review Process Is Broken - Here's the Real Solution — Transcript

- 0:00You know, most organizations do not
- 0:04realize how reviewing the review process
- 0:08or lack thereof is actually hurting
- 0:11their team's writing. Right, the
- 0:12assumption is, "Oh, the reviewers know
- 0:14what they're doing. Let's let them
- 0:16review and provide feedback, and that's
- 0:18going to improve the quality of the
- 0:19documents." I can promise you it's
- 0:21probably not. And here's why. Here are
- 0:23three things three reasons why your
- 0:26reviewing isn't improving document
- 0:29quality. A, your professionals don't
- 0:31like to write. And when they don't like
- 0:33to write, they procrastinate. And then
- 0:35they get this feedback, and guess what
- 0:37they're going to do with that feedback?
- 0:38They're just going to incorporate it.
- 0:39Why? Because they don't like to write,
- 0:43so they don't care about the feedback.
- 0:45They never bother to assess it. They're
- 0:47not going to improve from it, and that's
- 0:50one of the problems. Number two, your
- 0:53reviewers aren't reviewing for for
- 0:55content for things that really matter.
- 0:57They're not They're Their comments are
- 0:59not adding any value. In the 35-plus
- 1:02years that I've been doing this, when
- 1:04I've been working with with teams on
- 1:06their reviewing process, I have never
- 1:09seen reviewers provide feedback that
- 1:14writers could actually take. Lots of
- 1:15them are just based on pet peeves. "Oh,
- 1:17I don't like it when you use the word
- 1:18that." Or, "I don't like the word and."
- 1:21Or, whatever the case may be. I've
- 1:23actually worked with people who refused
- 1:25to let their team use the word that.
- 1:27It's a problem, right? So, your
- 1:29reviewers aren't trained. There's an
- 1:30assumption that your reviewers know what
- 1:33they're doing because they've been in
- 1:34the business for however many years or
- 1:36whatever the case may be, but they
- 1:37haven't been trained to review. They're
- 1:40reviewing as their teachers did in high
- 1:43school, right? So, these comments, these
- 1:45negative comments, nothing that really
- 1:46adds any value. The third reason is is
- 1:49that you probably have no process for
- 1:51reviewing, right? So, it's just like,
- 1:53"Hey, here you go. Have at it." We
- 1:55worked with one multi-million dollar
- 1:57organization
- 1:59that had no process for reviewing.
- 2:02Writers didn't even know if they were
- 2:03going to get feedback and if they were
- 2:05going to get feedback, they didn't know
- 2:07when. And so it was this constant
- 2:09guessing game about, well, when am I
- 2:12going to get get get comments back? Am I
- 2:14going to get comments back? So the
- 2:16problem is it's just it's this mire,
- 2:18this quagmire of inefficiency. So if you
- 2:23want to
- 2:25reap the benefits of good reviewing,
- 2:27your folks have to know how to review.
- 2:29There there is a process for that,
- 2:31believe it or not. They have to be
- 2:33trained on how to how to give comments
- 2:36that are
- 2:38actionable and that are concise and
- 2:40precise and don't focus on pet peeves.
