Full transcript
- 0:00You said people always be saying thank
- 0:02you for your yes.
- 0:04>> Yes.
- 0:04>> And your response [laughter] is which
- 0:08one?
- 0:08>> Yeah.
- 0:09>> A singular yes
- 0:12will not lead to anything that lasts
- 0:15very long. [music] I look back and go my
- 0:17no almost cost me.
- 0:20>> Yes it did.
- 0:20>> Not just my path.
- 0:22>> Yep.
- 0:22>> But everything that God taught me on
- 0:25that path. When [music] God wants yes
- 0:27and you say no, you can always expect a
- 0:30divine headwind. Let me say,
- 0:32>> are you freestyling right now?
- 0:33>> Let me I think the [music] enemy wants
- 0:34us to look at the cost of the yes, the
- 0:37annoyance of the yes, and the [music]
- 0:40Lord is going, "Are you not catching the
- 0:42divine compliment? My request truly is."
- 0:46The yes doesn't mean you like it. The
- 0:49yes doesn't mean it's joyous. I'm not
- 0:54telling you there will be awards,
- 0:58accolades,
- 0:59and an open heaven of financial
- 1:02abundance. Here's what I'm telling you.
- 1:04The most excruciating
- 1:07yeses are a red carpet welcome, Matt.
- 1:12Your heart rolls out for the King of the
- 1:15Universe, and the most [music]
- 1:16excruciating yeses bring him
- 1:19exponentially closer.
- 1:23What's up everybody? Welcome to the
- 1:25leader cut. As you can see, we have my
- 1:28twin.
- 1:29>> As you can see,
- 1:30>> we have my Spanish speaking twin.
- 1:33>> Hola toos.
- 1:34>> Yeah, we're I'm at some point I'm going
- 1:36to need a translator. I'm I'm going to
- 1:39just start keeping my phone and be like
- 1:41I'm going to talk to Google Translate
- 1:42and say, "What did he just say?" Because
- 1:44my guy is getting that Spanish in these
- 1:47days
- 1:48>> and I love it.
- 1:49>> Gracias. My best friend Tim Ross is in
- 1:51the house today. We love to get to sit
- 1:54down. We love to get to sit down with
- 1:56you and we're talking about something
- 1:59today that is one of my favorite
- 2:01subjects. I think it is part of the
- 2:04secret sauce for every follower of Jesus
- 2:07Christ. I don't think we talk about it
- 2:09enough. I think it's got to be
- 2:10normalized. And so, twin, we're going to
- 2:13hit it today. Let's pray. Spirit of the
- 2:15living God.
- 2:17We need our flesh cut on when we talk
- 2:19about not just obedience
- 2:22but continued obedience. And not just
- 2:25continued obedience. We're talking about
- 2:28obedience which escalates.
- 2:31>> See,
- 2:34Holy Spirit, would you just help all of
- 2:35us to hear what you are saying to our
- 2:38hearts? Would you take out the sword of
- 2:41the spirit which is the word of God, the
- 2:43knife of heaven as the surgeon of
- 2:45heaven? Would you cut all over our
- 2:47flesh? If there's somewhere I am white
- 2:49knuckling
- 2:50>> an area of my life or something in my
- 2:53life
- 2:54>> which you are asking me
- 2:56>> to let go of. If there's something
- 2:59you're asking me to do which I don't
- 3:00want to do, Holy Spirit, I pray for
- 3:03conviction.
- 3:04>> See,
- 3:04>> it is your kindness that leads us to
- 3:06repentance. You're not going to yell and
- 3:07scream, but you will bring conviction.
- 3:10>> The closer you come, the more convicted
- 3:12we become.
- 3:14>> Holy Spirit, cut on us.
- 3:16>> We want to look more like Jesus. We want
- 3:17to live more like Jesus,
- 3:20>> but we can't without this. So help us in
- 3:24Jesus name.
- 3:25>> Amen.
- 3:26>> Amen. Twin, you said something that made
- 3:30me die laughing as we're both I sound
- 3:34like Herman the Frog and you you just
- 3:36said strep a week ago.
- 3:37>> I did. It was so ridiculous. This trash
- 3:39is going it's it's offensive. It's going
- 3:41around. I don't like it. It's wild.
- 3:43>> Um but if you ask me why it's happening,
- 3:45I'm just going to plead the fifth 111
- 3:47times.
- 3:48>> Okay.
- 3:48>> Like Fouchy.
- 3:50Sorry. Sorry. I mean,
- 3:53>> where did that come from?
- 3:54>> I know. I know. Well, if [laughter] I
- 3:56played the fifth.
- 3:57>> Oh my god.
- 3:57>> And again and again. Sorry. And again.
- 4:00And again. And again.
- 4:00>> Sorry. That not that pod. But you know,
- 4:03I mean,
- 4:04>> I've been fighting this thing for a
- 4:05couple weeks. Um, you said something
- 4:08talking about obedience that made me die
- 4:10laughing. [laughter]
- 4:12>> You said people always be saying, "Thank
- 4:15you for your yes."
- 4:16>> Yes.
- 4:17>> And your [laughter] response is, "Which
- 4:20one?"
- 4:21>> Yeah. It's a gang of yeses out here,
- 4:23fam. It's like it's like they they they
- 4:27act like it's one.
- 4:28>> This is what I'm saying to me. We we've
- 4:30got to talk about this. We've got to
- 4:32normalize.
- 4:32>> Yeah.
- 4:33>> A singular yes
- 4:36>> will not lead to anything that lasts
- 4:39very long.
- 4:39>> Yeah. No, not at all.
- 4:41>> And so we we there is an initial yes,
- 4:44but there is never a singular all by
- 4:48itself.
- 4:49>> No. Yes.
- 4:50>> No. There's no blanket yes,
- 4:52>> bro. The biggest yeses always lead to
- 4:57bigger yeses.
- 4:58>> Absolutely correct.
- 4:59>> Like when you said it, I was like, you
- 5:00know what, when somebody's like, because
- 5:02we get hit up Yeah.
- 5:03>> consistent. It's like, thank you for
- 5:04your Yes. I'm just going to say,
- 5:07>> which yes are we talking about? Are we
- 5:09talking about waking up at 2:00 in the
- 5:11morning, my 50-year-old wife feeding a
- 5:14baby we took in this summer? Which yes
- 5:16we talking about? For sure. Absolutely.
- 5:17Because when we walk with him,
- 5:21>> it's impossible
- 5:23to consistently say no.
- 5:25>> Yeah.
- 5:26>> And so I I want to hear from you. Let's
- 5:29Why do you think people think through
- 5:32the lens of one solitary yes? Um I I
- 5:37think because
- 5:40we
- 5:42in our minds
- 5:45we feel like when we've made a decision
- 5:50it's final
- 5:53and that finalization
- 5:57presupposes
- 6:00that whatever comes next I've already
- 6:02said yes. January 14th of 1996,
- 6:06>> right? So
- 6:07>> God got my yes.
- 6:08>> God got my yes. So whatever you want,
- 6:12>> not understanding.
- 6:15My 30 years of walking with Jesus has
- 6:17been yes. Yes. No. No. No. No. Yes. Yes.
- 6:20No. No.
- 6:22Heck no. Heck yes. Yes. Yes. No. No. No.
- 6:27So, it hasn't been
- 6:30>> a string of consistent yeses for 30
- 6:33years. I've fallen off on some things.
- 6:37>> I told I told you with Max when he
- 6:39wanted me to adopt Maxin, I said no
- 6:402,000 times.
- 6:42>> Literally, I I I bet if I went back and
- 6:44counted, he'd tell me it was over 2,000
- 6:46times.
- 6:46>> Yeah. I there I'll never forget um uh I
- 6:50was still driving the doughnut truck at
- 6:51this time. I was delivering Gatorade
- 6:54um in [laughter]
- 6:56a
- 6:57>> I love flashbacks.
- 6:58>> Hey, I I was delivering Gatorade in a
- 7:03Dolly Madison truck.
- 7:04>> Was this was pre-Nissan?
- 7:06>> Oh, this is pre- Nissan. Oh, absolutely.
- 7:08I I have been in Texas for just over a
- 7:11year. And so I I got this uh well the
- 7:15subdivision I work for uh this mom and
- 7:18pop company
- 7:20um got the account for Gatorade's first
- 7:25um uh vending machines
- 7:28>> that they had and they had like 32 in
- 7:30the DFW Metroplex all over the DFW
- 7:33Metroplex. I'm talking like
- 7:35>> Yeah.
- 7:35>> deep down in Fort Worth. that
- 7:37metropolitan area
- 7:38>> way way up in Denton, right?
- 7:42>> Wherever you saw a Gatorade machine back
- 7:44in the late 90s. I feel
- 7:46>> that was you.
- 7:46>> That was me.
- 7:47>> So, I'm I'm out on this account. I I got
- 7:51to go to this recreational park. There's
- 7:53a there's a vending machine there and
- 7:55there's a little Hispanic kid that the
- 7:57Holy Spirit tells me. He gives me a word
- 7:58for this Hispanic kid while I'm while
- 8:01I'm working like like I'm going in there
- 8:04to fill up the Gatorade machine and and
- 8:06then the Holy Spirit says tell him
- 8:08something and I'm like
- 8:10nah.
- 8:12>> Would it be Monito in Spanish?
- 8:14>> Monito?
- 8:15>> I don't know. Did I just make up a word?
- 8:17>> It sounds like you I thought you
- 8:18>> little brother. I don't know how would
- 8:20you say [laughter]
- 8:21>> uh uh
- 8:24manito probably little brother like like
- 8:26um but start Yeah, it's all good. So So
- 8:29he he he tells me
- 8:32to like go tell him something and I just
- 8:34won't do it. I'm filling up the the the
- 8:36machine and and it gets heavier and
- 8:40heavier
- 8:41>> and heavier.
- 8:42>> Yep.
- 8:43>> Yep.
- 8:45It doesn't get that heavy now, but back
- 8:47then it was getting heavier and heavier
- 8:49and heavier. And I just kept talking
- 8:52myself out of it. I'm like, "This this
- 8:54dude is probably going to be looking at
- 8:55me like I'm crazy. I don't I ain't going
- 8:57to be walking up to like this younger
- 8:59kid." And I didn't do it.
- 9:02>> I felt
- 9:05so convicted. It wasn't guilt. It was
- 9:07the conviction of the Holy Spirit like,
- 9:10"Are we
- 9:11>> Mhm.
- 9:12Are you good, bro? It's
- 9:14>> a pushing it on [laughter] the chest
- 9:15feeling. I know it. Well,
- 9:16>> are you all right? Like, I just told you
- 9:19to go. What were you going to lose by
- 9:21telling him this or whatever I told you
- 9:25to say? [snorts] And
- 9:28there's been a lot of times where it's
- 9:31been a no,
- 9:32>> right? And so when so so we have to we
- 9:39have to calibrate yeses because there's
- 9:41three time there's three kind this this
- 9:44is why yeses are something that we
- 9:47really need to like focus on and I'm
- 9:49glad we're actually talking about this.
- 9:51There's three kind of yeses. There is
- 9:54first and foremost a counterfeit yes.
- 9:59A yes that's actually a no.
- 10:00>> Mhm. [clears throat and snorts] Then
- 10:02there's a conditional yes
- 10:05which is yes if
- 10:07>> the ultimatum.
- 10:08>> Yes, but yes but
- 10:11yes as long as
- 10:12>> Y
- 10:13>> right
- 10:14>> the confirmation yes the the the yes
- 10:16yes.
- 10:18That's way in the back. Nobody wants to
- 10:20give that because then you're obligated.
- 10:22Then you're responsible. Then you gave
- 10:24your word, right? And so, um,
- 10:28I imagine that there's a lot of people
- 10:30that think they said yes to the Lord
- 10:35until he asked for that certain thing.
- 10:38And that confirmation yes might go back
- 10:40to a conditional yes or that
- 10:43confirmation yes might slip all the way
- 10:45and slide all the way back to a
- 10:48counterfeit yes. So, I think this is why
- 10:50it's important for us to talk about it.
- 10:51>> Okay. Oh, I you mentioned something
- 10:53about the nose, and I I want to hit
- 10:55that.
- 10:56>> Yeah.
- 10:56>> As the on-ramp because we've both
- 10:58learned some really valuable lessons in
- 11:01life through our nose.
- 11:03>> Absolutely.
- 11:04>> Immediately when you said that, my mind
- 11:06went to when I was the the youth pastor
- 11:09at Gateway back in the day, and Robert
- 11:11came to me and he goes, "Hey, uh, I feel
- 11:13like you're supposed to become our young
- 11:15adult pastor." They had a college
- 11:17ministry,
- 11:18>> but they'd never done
- 11:19>> young adult ministry. Mh.
- 11:20>> And he he he was very resolute. Okay.
- 11:23Now remember, you know this the the
- 11:26first the first four years of youth
- 11:29ministry for me
- 11:30>> a I was the worst worst youth pastor
- 11:32gateway ever had and will ever have in
- 11:34its history
- 11:35>> because the first my first twothirds of
- 11:38being their youth pastor.
- 11:39>> So funny.
- 11:40>> I was an arrogant donkey, insecure
- 11:43donkey
- 11:45>> and who was not hearing from the Lord. I
- 11:47I was struggling.
- 11:48>> Mhm. And then the last, you know, the
- 11:50Lord broke my kneecaps spiritually. And
- 11:53the last two years, I started to to kind
- 11:56of feel like I was hitting my stride and
- 11:57starting to get under the oil. And then
- 11:59this guy comes to me and he's like, I
- 12:01feel like the Lord has clearly said
- 12:03you're to transition and take start our
- 12:07young adult ministry.
- 12:09>> Mhm.
- 12:10>> Immediately I said, "No,
- 12:15[laughter] no." Yeah.
- 12:18because I in my mind I was like, "Well,
- 12:22you're you're a little too distant from
- 12:24this." Like, I appreciate you feel like
- 12:25the Lord's saying that
- 12:28and I respect your
- 12:31you your ability to hear from the Lord,
- 12:32but
- 12:34>> this last two years, I'm finally hitting
- 12:36my stride.
- 12:37>> Y
- 12:38>> I can't leave.
- 12:40>> Yep.
- 12:41>> He let it go.
- 12:42>> Okay.
- 12:44A couple months later, he comes back and
- 12:48triples down.
- 12:51And it it became obvious. Now, the first
- 12:53time he was giving me an opportunity to
- 12:57say yes.
- 12:57>> Mhm.
- 12:58>> The second time
- 12:59>> Mhm.
- 13:00>> he was saying yes for me. [laughter]
- 13:03>> Right. And this this truly was one of
- 13:06the first times I can remember if not
- 13:08the first time
- 13:09>> where I learned
- 13:12the power
- 13:14of a yes when God is the one asking. It
- 13:18wasn't just an opportunity. This was God
- 13:20saying this is the path
- 13:22>> I have for your life.
- 13:24>> I don't know if I would have ever met
- 13:25you. One of the reasons we Oh,
- 13:26absolutely. Because we were doing the
- 13:27same thing in the same field in the same
- 13:30metropolitan area.
- 13:31>> That's absolutely correct.
- 13:32He made me. He made me say yes.
- 13:36>> Yep.
- 13:38>> And you know, it led to
- 13:41>> seven years.
- 13:42>> Yep.
- 13:43>> Of learning with the Lord.
- 13:46>> The likes of which, even as a senior
- 13:47pastor, I've never had a season of life
- 13:49like that.
- 13:50>> Where personally I was growing. Yep.
- 13:53>> He had me growing. And Timmy, I look
- 13:55back and go,
- 13:57>> my no
- 13:59almost cost me.
- 14:00>> Yes, it did. Not just my path.
- 14:02>> Yep.
- 14:03>> But everything that God taught me on
- 14:06that path.
- 14:06>> That's right.
- 14:07>> That would come in so handy.
- 14:09>> That's right.
- 14:10>> In the days to come. So I I think about
- 14:14>> life isn't just as simple as
- 14:17>> do I want to say yes or do I want to say
- 14:18no? What is the yes
- 14:20>> God is looking for and asking for?
- 14:23>> And so my mind goes to
- 14:26>> to your point, we're not always going to
- 14:27get it right.
- 14:29You know, I have a I have a string. So
- 14:31then the next thing Gateway was popping
- 14:33off. There was not enough room and there
- 14:37this is a little known fact. The first
- 14:39extension campus of Gateway Church was
- 14:42at Harkkins Theater in South Lake Town
- 14:44Square.
- 14:45>> I remember this.
- 14:45>> Okay. This was pre I remember this
- 14:47>> North Hills.
- 14:48>> Yes.
- 14:48>> Robert looks at me and he goes, "You're
- 14:50supposed to be the campus pastor. This
- 14:52you're going to have to do this one day.
- 14:53Set up and tear down. It's supposed to
- 14:55be you." What did I say?
- 14:57>> You said no.
- 14:58>> No.
- 14:59No.
- 15:00>> Yeah.
- 15:01>> And what ended up happening, it it was
- 15:03maybe a year, not even. I learned more
- 15:07lessons about how to set up and tear
- 15:10down, which I was going to go on to
- 15:11plant a church that we were set up and
- 15:12tear down for two years.
- 15:13>> Yep.
- 15:15>> After that, the church folds in.
- 15:17Northstar, it's Gateway's first far away
- 15:19campus. Preston goes, "I feel like
- 15:21Robert goes, I feel like you're supposed
- 15:22to go out there." What did I say?
- 15:24>> You said no.
- 15:25>> No. [laughter]
- 15:27I learned more lessons before coming out
- 15:30here to Scottsdale.
- 15:31>> Yep.
- 15:32>> And then when he sat me down and said,
- 15:34"The Lord said it's time for you to go
- 15:35Yeah.
- 15:35>> to Scottsdale." What did I say?
- 15:38>> I said, "No."
- 15:39>> No. Again,
- 15:41>> I look back and one of the things I'm
- 15:43grateful for is I had somebody in my
- 15:45life
- 15:47who knew what the right answer was. And
- 15:50>> oh, we got to talk about this.
- 15:52>> Even when I didn't.
- 15:53>> Yeah.
- 15:55This is what Proverbs talks about. There
- 15:57is safety.
- 15:59>> Yes, there is.
- 16:00>> And a multitude of counselors.
- 16:02>> Yeah.
- 16:02>> And so, here's the big thing I learned.
- 16:06You need to be close enough with people
- 16:08you trust in life. So that when you get
- 16:11to a fork in the road and you could go
- 16:13yes or you could go no that when you
- 16:16want to go no when you actually say no
- 16:21they hold their ground and say I see the
- 16:25pillar of cloud going down this yes
- 16:28you've got to say yes
- 16:30>> these are the people we need to be
- 16:32surrounded with in our lives because I
- 16:34would regret
- 16:35>> Yep.
- 16:37>> greatly
- 16:37>> Yep. Oh, for sure.
- 16:38>> Some moves on my path that I have stuck
- 16:40to my no.
- 16:41>> Yeah. Okay. So, I'm I'm curious. What
- 16:44does it feel like
- 16:47to go from no to yes? What does it feel
- 16:51like
- 16:52to have said no,
- 16:55meant it?
- 16:57>> Yeah, it's great.
- 16:58>> And then it
- 16:59>> that's great. it becomes. Here's what I
- 17:00would say in my scenario where my no
- 17:05>> conflicted
- 17:06>> with the yes God was looking for. I'll
- 17:08tell you exactly what it feels like.
- 17:09Jonah
- 17:13>> okay.
- 17:14>> When God wants yes and you say no, you
- 17:16can always expect a divine headwind.
- 17:20>> Let me say it.
- 17:21>> Are you freestyling right now?
- 17:22>> Let me say it like this. I will punch
- 17:23you.
- 17:23>> I was just with RT Kindle last week in
- 17:26the face. I walked I came back and it
- 17:28was like, "Lord, do you is this man at
- 17:3091 years old just giving out
- 17:33impartations of of a spirit of wisdom,
- 17:35the gift of wisdom?" Like, what do we
- 17:37Bro, 91 years old man,
- 17:38>> did you just freestyle that sentence?
- 17:40>> Yes. And here here's
- 17:42>> very obnoxious, dog.
- 17:43>> Not every headwind is the enemy.
- 17:49Just ask Jonah,
- 17:52Timmy. When God
- 17:55wants a yes and I keep giving him a no,
- 17:59I have learned I should expect
- 18:03opposition.
- 18:05Here's another way scripture says it.
- 18:07God opposes the proud.
- 18:09When God asks me for a yes and I give
- 18:11him a no, my no is my way of saying I
- 18:13know better.
- 18:18I can expect to be.
- 18:19>> Your no doesn't mean you know.
- 18:24buddy. But it's my declaration that I'm
- 18:26pretty sure I do. And I have learned
- 18:31to flesh.
- 18:35Listen, we talk about being opposed by
- 18:38the enemy as though it's the worst thing
- 18:39on planet Earth. Can I just say it's
- 18:42not? Being opposed by the king of the
- 18:45universe is far worse.
- 18:49[laughter]
- 18:50Giving the king of the universe a no
- 18:53will lead you to the belly of the well.
- 18:56>> I had to write that down. I was not
- 18:58going to act like I mean you my twin and
- 19:00all but I wasn't about [laughter] to I
- 19:02wasn't about to sit up here and be like
- 19:03oh it was a great quote. I had to write
- 19:05that one down. That was nasty.
- 19:08So this this is what it feels like. I
- 19:10and I can go through so many times in my
- 19:12life where God wanted a yes and I kept
- 19:15giving him a no. And I know what the
- 19:17feeling feels like now. It it feels like
- 19:19David before he confessed
- 19:24>> where you try and convince yourself it's
- 19:27not that big of a deal. But when he
- 19:29keeps coming back to it, you know what I
- 19:31learned with Maxon? Cuz I've told the
- 19:32story, he literally asked me two to
- 19:35three years before we even adopted him
- 19:38and this was the question. Will you
- 19:40please do this for me?
- 19:42>> And I said no. [laughter]
- 19:46This is so good for people to hear me.
- 19:49>> Oh yeah. People be looking with adopted
- 19:51son.
- 19:52>> Thank you. Thank you for your
- 19:54>> Thank you for your No. Let me tell you
- 19:56the story of my nose. [laughter]
- 19:59>> Oh my god.
- 19:59>> Let me tell you of the story of 2,000
- 20:01nos leading to
- 20:04>> my eventual yes.
- 20:05>> And what I learned
- 20:06>> y
- 20:07>> immediately when I said yes, I came back
- 20:09to the Lord. But right before I said yes
- 20:12finally about Maxon, I said, "Lord, I
- 20:14don't understand this. This makes no
- 20:15sense." Y
- 20:16>> in my the calculator of my life I don't
- 20:19understand why
- 20:21>> it wasn't 8 weeks after adopting him
- 20:24>> that thing shifted so quickly in me I
- 20:28started changing in a way I went back to
- 20:31him and I said
- 20:33this might be the most gangster chess
- 20:35move you've ever made in my life because
- 20:38I've been his father for not even a
- 20:40hundred days and I can't even recognize
- 20:42me
- 20:44when I look at certain parts parts of
- 20:45me.
- 20:46>> Wow.
- 20:47>> So, this is both sides of what does it
- 20:49feel like to move from no to yes. Well,
- 20:54number one, it's relief
- 20:56because when he's opposing you,
- 21:00it it's I that feel I hate that feeling.
- 21:03It's that I describe it as the pushing
- 21:05in on the chest. There's the pushing in
- 21:07that's intimate and then there's the
- 21:09pushing in because I'm going in the
- 21:10opposite direction.
- 21:11>> Sure. Absolutely.
- 21:13>> I move to the Yes.
- 21:16It's just easier. Even if it's harder.
- 21:18>> Yep.
- 21:19>> Even if it's heavier, it's easier.
- 21:20>> Yep.
- 21:21>> But more than that, it's like he wants
- 21:24you to know. He's the God of
- 21:25confirmation. He's not the author of
- 21:27confusion.
- 21:28>> Yep.
- 21:29>> I say yes. And it's like he wants me to
- 21:31know immediately. Now, I need you to see
- 21:34this was a me request, right?
- 21:35>> This was not some choice in your life.
- 21:37>> This is something I asked you for. And
- 21:39I'm going to respond
- 21:40>> in kind.
- 21:41>> Yep.
- 21:42>> Okay. Okay, I'll file that away for the
- 21:44next time you ask for a really hard yes.
- 21:46>> Yep.
- 21:47Okay.
- 21:49Um,
- 21:51so I think the
- 21:55most disorienting
- 21:57Yes. This is probably a two-parter.
- 22:01Um,
- 22:05came in October of 2021.
- 22:10So the last Sunday um of September,
- 22:14which was our anniversary month at
- 22:17Embassy City, Charlotte Gamble comes and
- 22:20speaks.
- 22:20>> Yep. I remember it.
- 22:22>> Gives this prophetic word
- 22:23>> clear as day.
- 22:24>> That we both, me and Juliet, we we we
- 22:27both thought we understood exactly what
- 22:29she was saying and what it meant.
- 22:32>> Oh, absolutely. The the season is
- 22:34changing and God is doing something
- 22:36else. And I'm [snorts] like, "Oh, yeah,
- 22:38that's true." cuz we're reorging and
- 22:40we're about to buy a new building and
- 22:41blah blah blah blah. Child,
- 22:454 days later, I'm in a hotel room in
- 22:48Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the Holy Spirit
- 22:50says, "I need you to watch that
- 22:52prophetic word that I spoke through
- 22:54Charlotte again." I'm like, "Oh, okay."
- 22:56And I turn it on and I listen to it and
- 23:02press I thought it was overdubbed.
- 23:04What I was hearing four days later was
- 23:06not what I heard
- 23:08>> four years prior. I was like,
- 23:10>> she didn't say this,
- 23:11>> right?
- 23:12>> That is not what I remember.
- 23:13>> That is not what I heard. This is not
- 23:16what I remember. Somebody has chopped
- 23:18and screwed. Somebody took this to
- 23:20Houston and they chopped and screwed it
- 23:21cuz this is not what she said.
- 23:24And the Holy Spirit was like, "Your
- 23:26season as a lead pastor is coming to an
- 23:28end."
- 23:30And I
- 23:32burst into tears.
- 23:36I thought I sinned to let you know how
- 23:39>> jacked up my relationship was with God.
- 23:43>> That when he makes a request,
- 23:45>> something must be off.
- 23:46>> Something must be off. I must have done
- 23:47something wrong. Cuz there's
- 23:49>> Right.
- 23:50>> If I didn't see it coming, then there's
- 23:52something I didn't see. Something I
- 23:53Yeah.
- 23:54>> What? Who do I think I am? Right. That's
- 23:56wild. Jesus told his disciples, "It
- 23:59ain't for you to know the times and the
- 24:00hours." He never answered the question.
- 24:02Oh, my father knows that question. Like,
- 24:03[laughter]
- 24:04he wasn't tripping off that, right? But
- 24:06I I I literally like spiraled just I I
- 24:11just felt like I'm I can't be hearing
- 24:13this, but I know I'm hearing this.
- 24:15>> Yeah.
- 24:16>> Um
- 24:18>> what am I supposed to do with this
- 24:19information? So, I called Jerome Lewis,
- 24:21my mentor in Delaware.
- 24:24you know, it's it's five my time, it's
- 24:26sixth time. He's like, "Hey, son." And I
- 24:29was like, "I [laughter]
- 24:31was already He probably thought somebody
- 24:33was dead." I baldled my eyes out on that
- 24:36phone
- 24:38and
- 24:40um by the time we hung up, I was stable
- 24:44and reeling.
- 24:47And
- 24:50that yes started that day.
- 24:53>> Right.
- 24:53>> Do you hear the words coming out of my
- 24:54mouth?
- 24:55>> 100%. And I've lived it.
- 24:57>> I've lived it the last two years. Even
- 25:00I've watched you live it. [laughter]
- 25:02>> That yes started
- 25:05October.
- 25:06>> So good.
- 25:07>> The fourth I think.
- 25:10And when I tell you
- 25:13it has continued
- 25:16>> to be a followup of yeses
- 25:19>> because
- 25:22that thing I could have said yes in
- 25:24October and no in January and still been
- 25:27the lead pastor.
- 25:29>> Like we cannot think that it's one yes.
- 25:32>> No. No. that everybody looks back at
- 25:35that season of your life and they're
- 25:37like that was a moment where you made a
- 25:40singular choice. The choice was to
- 25:44say yes in such a way that you were
- 25:47getting on a new path that would demand
- 25:50a million yeses.
- 25:52>> That's
- 25:54like Timmy, we should just tell them.
- 25:56>> We should
- 25:56>> we we like if we actually love them,
- 25:58[laughter]
- 25:59>> we should tell them
- 26:00>> this this is not a trick. It's not some
- 26:03divine game God is playing.
- 26:05>> No, it's not.
- 26:06>> The bigger the initial yes, the more
- 26:09yeses, the more excruciating,
- 26:12escalating yeses you can expect, right
- 26:15to have to give.
- 26:16>> That's exactly that's absolutely correct
- 26:18because not only was it yes to what I
- 26:21heard, it was yes to have the
- 26:23conversation with Juliet with no context
- 26:25and no answers. Then it was yes to have
- 26:28the conversation with the elders.
- 26:29>> Elders
- 26:30>> with less context. Correct. and I'm a
- 26:32strategist. I don't even want to
- 26:34>> I don't want to talk to you till it's
- 26:35done. I want to I want I want to look
- 26:37good. Let's let the pride and ego in on
- 26:39this. Right?
- 26:40>> So, and and I have to just keep saying
- 26:43yes to conversations even though they
- 26:45feel awkward and they feel
- 26:48um um disorienting. And then then the
- 26:52Holy Spirit tells me who my successor
- 26:54is. It's a guy I've been mentoring for
- 26:56three years. I've never even heard him
- 26:58preach. And there's no second name.
- 27:00there there's no American Idol search
- 27:03that's going on all these five and point
- 27:05out yeah let's cast lots no it's that
- 27:07guy
- 27:09>> um so to say yes to
- 27:13who I heard who doesn't attend our
- 27:16church and attends somebody else's
- 27:17church and is very active in that church
- 27:19and I got to sit down with that person I
- 27:21got to say yes to that meeting before I
- 27:24can even say yes to the next meeting
- 27:25that I'm supposed to have after that
- 27:26meeting
- 27:28>> and then in the middle of all that he
- 27:31tells me to do a podcast to which I said
- 27:34no
- 27:35>> nope
- 27:36>> I'd rather throw a penny in the ocean
- 27:39those were my exact words of the Holy
- 27:41Spirit he said I need you to start a
- 27:43podcast I said I'd rather throw a penny
- 27:44in the ocean there 5 million podcasts
- 27:48I'd rather throw a penny in the ocean
- 27:50sir the Pacific or the Atlantic or the
- 27:54Indian
- 27:56and
- 27:58I said yes to the
- 28:00Then he told me the way he wanted me to
- 28:02do the podcast. I need you to be as
- 28:04vulnerable publicly as you were privat
- 28:05as you always are privately. Oh, I'm
- 28:07about to get cancelled. He said, "Go
- 28:09ahead and get cancelled."
- 28:12I guess. And And it's almost like when I
- 28:16said I guess, he just heard the S and
- 28:17was like, "So yes." [laughter]
- 28:22Cuz I heard close enough. Let's roll.
- 28:25>> Is that it? Is that I guess a yes? I
- 28:28guess I guess it's a yes. So this is a
- 28:31string
- 28:33and we are stringing together the yeses
- 28:37that keep us on the path that he started
- 28:42with the initial one
- 28:43>> 100%.
- 28:46But let's be honest,
- 28:48we live in a day and age now where we've
- 28:50seen a lot of people go, "Yes, yes, yes,
- 28:53yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes for 20
- 28:55something years and then just be like,
- 28:57no,
- 29:00no more, no mass."
- 29:02>> Yep.
- 29:02>> Right. It's over. I don't want to do
- 29:05this anymore.
- 29:07And all those yeses
- 29:10literally
- 29:12come to a screeching halt because
- 29:14somebody goes, "No,
- 29:17I'm not doing that no more. I don't want
- 29:18to be faithful anymore. I don't want to
- 29:21be transparent anymore. I don't want to
- 29:22have integrity anymore. No,
- 29:24>> I don't want to pay that price anymore.
- 29:25>> I don't want to pay that price anymore.
- 29:28I gave you 11 years of yeses, right?
- 29:31>> I'm selfishly taking this no now and
- 29:33let's keep it a buck.
- 29:39Submission
- 29:41is as long as we are in this flesh
- 29:44because of Genesis 3. Submission is
- 29:48never going to be the default setting of
- 29:51the flesh.
- 29:53>> That's why it's so hard to do. That's
- 29:55why there has to be a crucifixion behind
- 29:57it. There has to be a depth.
- 29:59>> Yeah.
- 30:00>> For a confirmation. Yes.
- 30:03You don't get a confirmation yes without
- 30:06a no dying.
- 30:08>> Yeah.
- 30:10>> Because our flesh wants comfort and
- 30:13pleasure. Bottom line. And I've seen a
- 30:16lot of people string together years of
- 30:19yeses who finally get so tired they just
- 30:21go,
- 30:24it's too expensive. Now,
- 30:25>> a marriage with 25 years of yeses can be
- 30:29ruined with a single solitary no. This
- 30:34is the power of the wrong no.
- 30:39And this is the power of the right yes.
- 30:42>> Absolutely. And and here's the thing.
- 30:47A Genesis 12 yes
- 30:50[clears throat]
- 30:51is a yes for the rest of your days.
- 30:55When God said, "It's time to leave your
- 30:58father's home and go to the land I will
- 31:00show you."
- 31:04Where are we going? I didn't say I would
- 31:06tell you. I said I would show you.
- 31:10Why are you doing it that way? Well,
- 31:12there's a number of reasons. If I told
- 31:14you the location today, you'd be tempted
- 31:16to grab your version of GPS and
- 31:19>> find the fastest shortcut.
- 31:21>> Mhm.
- 31:22not realizing the shortcuts
- 31:25are the fastest way to move the furthest
- 31:27from me.
- 31:32I love you. I love your face off. I feel
- 31:34seen. I don't need to be celebrated.
- 31:37Just those little looks. It's like
- 31:40>> you're obnoxious today.
- 31:42>> I'm with my twin.
- 31:43>> Yeah, you're obnoxious today.
- 31:44>> I'm with my twin for sure.
- 31:45>> But Timmy,
- 31:45>> you're on something.
- 31:46>> Abram saying
- 31:48okay. Yes. Was not a yes. I'll leave my
- 31:52father's home. It was a yes.
- 31:57I will step by step give you my yes by
- 32:03yes because it's the only way I'll get
- 32:07there.
- 32:07>> Absolutely correct.
- 32:08>> Every step Abram took was another yes.
- 32:12>> Yes, that's exactly right. If it was
- 32:15just a Genesis 12 global one yes fits
- 32:19all. No, he had to say yes again in 13
- 32:2314 15 16 17 faux sure show.
- 32:31>> Ain't that is 15 or 17 circumcision.
- 32:37Talk about a putting together a string
- 32:39of yeses. How about going to have to get
- 32:41a flint rock when you're like,
- 32:45>> bro,
- 32:46>> you better hurry up with that rock.
- 32:48[laughter]
- 32:4980 something years old. 90 something
- 32:50years old.
- 32:53I think it's 15.
- 32:56It feels like 15 in my head, but it
- 32:58might be 17.
- 33:06>> Yeah. Cutting of the covenant 18 and 19.
- 33:10Yep. 17.
- 33:13>> It is 17. Okay. So, cut. Okay. So, the
- 33:16cutting of the covenant is 15. That's
- 33:18when That's when God tells him to cut
- 33:20the animals up. And then
- 33:2517.
- 33:26>> Are you talking about the command to cut
- 33:27or are you talking about foreskin on the
- 33:29feet?
- 33:30>> That's No, no, no. I'm talking about 17.
- 33:3217 when he But but uh 15 is the co the
- 33:35cutting of the covenant
- 33:37>> that God wants him to do. That's why and
- 33:39both of them are cutting. But one was
- 33:42cutting himself.
- 33:45>> I got you.
- 33:45>> How about that? Yes.
- 33:46>> I got you.
- 33:48How about those yeses
- 33:51when a piece of you has to come off
- 33:55in order to be where God wants you to
- 33:57be? That's a different type of yes, man.
- 34:01So, yes, there's a bunch of people that
- 34:04might do the Genesis 12. Yes.
- 34:07But there's a gang of people that might
- 34:09chunk deuces to the Genesis 17. Yes.
- 34:14BECAUSE OKAY. HOLY GHOST.
- 34:17OH, that's stinky. Genesis 12 is cutting
- 34:20ties. [laughter]
- 34:26Real time sermon development right here.
- 34:2912 is cutting ties.
- 34:3215 is cutting covenant.
- 34:35And 17 is cutting myself.
- 34:37>> Cutting me.
- 34:40>> Those are three different yeses.
- 34:44And it's easier to cut ties than cut
- 34:46self.
- 34:48The escalating [laughter] obedience. The
- 34:52escalating. Yes. That's it right there.
- 34:57So this is faith to faith and glory to
- 35:00glory. Sometimes can be gory.
- 35:03>> I was about to say it.
- 35:05>> Too gory.
- 35:06Take that L out.
- 35:07>> That's how you know you're doing it
- 35:08right.
- 35:10>> Am I bleeding anywhere?
- 35:12What has this actually cost me?
- 35:16Those yeses are like not
- 35:19easy.
- 35:21And
- 35:23I have empathy for people
- 35:26who can't muster a yes
- 35:29when it comes to sacrific sacrificing
- 35:32something that they love or they think
- 35:35they need. I know what I get it. I'm not
- 35:39this is no this not a judgment pod to be
- 35:43like you you said no and you ain't you
- 35:45ain't got that yes yes in your spirit
- 35:47like all that all that some preachers be
- 35:49doing all that foolishness and like they
- 35:52don't have a closet full of nos
- 35:56[laughter]
- 35:59>> that's another bot a closet full of the
- 36:02wrong nos and the wrong yeses
- 36:06I I just want to encourage people
- 36:10that
- 36:12the yes
- 36:14doesn't mean you like it.
- 36:16>> Yeah.
- 36:18>> The yes doesn't mean
- 36:22it's joyous.
- 36:25Abraham's yes in 17 is filled with pain.
- 36:30There's no anesthesia.
- 36:31>> Yeah.
- 36:32>> What are we talking about? There's no
- 36:34numbing agent. This is a flint rock,
- 36:38fam.
- 36:39>> For the joy set before him wasn't
- 36:41talking about the act of carrying it and
- 36:43being crucified on it. It's what was on
- 36:46the other side.
- 36:47>> What's what's on the My yes here is for
- 36:50what I want there.
- 36:51>> But let's not act like this is not
- 36:53excruciatingly painful
- 36:55>> because it is. And I I just think
- 37:00>> I just think some of these Thank you for
- 37:02your yes has been a little too chipper.
- 37:04That's my thing. I totally agree.
- 37:05>> You know what I'm saying? It's like I
- 37:06need you to put a little respect on my
- 37:08>> You need to pull that calculator out.
- 37:09You really need to
- 37:10>> Yeah. When you tally that thing up, you
- 37:12won't be saying it so chipper. You'll be
- 37:14like, "Hey,
- 37:14>> hey, don't count my followers.
- 37:17Count the cost of my Yes.
- 37:20And yes, and yes. Don't count my
- 37:23followers. Don't That
- 37:27doesn't tell a story of the path he
- 37:29asked me to navigate."
- 37:31But to me, that's what Thank you for
- 37:33your Yes. Don't Hey, don't be looking at
- 37:37them views now. Don't do that. Don't do
- 37:40that. You need to go back and ask me the
- 37:41stories about the back side of the
- 37:43mountain in
- 37:43>> Midian
- 37:44>> where no one was viewing.
- 37:46>> Yeah. Yeah. For sure.
- 37:46>> And he was asking for a bloody yes.
- 37:49>> That's right.
- 37:50>> 40 times a day.
- 37:51>> That's exactly right. That's exactly
- 37:53right. Yeah. I'm I'm I'm I'm
- 37:57The best yeses are the bloodiest yeses.
- 38:00And Timmy, I I think the older we get,
- 38:02the more we realize if you go a couple
- 38:06days without a yes, which doesn't hurt.
- 38:10I I don't know that I can say I was
- 38:13fully navigating
- 38:16the past couple of days
- 38:19handin hand with him.
- 38:20>> I agree. No, I absolutely agree. Walking
- 38:22in with him cost me something.
- 38:25>> Every day.
- 38:26>> Every day. I promise. Even if it's talk
- 38:29to the talk to the boy, buy the
- 38:32Gatorade.
- 38:33>> That's exactly
- 38:34>> saying I I mean it it doesn't have to be
- 38:35huge,
- 38:37>> but the yeses he asked for are designed
- 38:40to hurt.
- 38:42>> Okay. So, um
- 38:43>> where you at?
- 38:44>> I'm in second Corinthians chapter number
- 38:4512. This never ceases to amaze me. Um
- 38:532 Corinth 2 Corinthians 12:8. This is uh
- 38:56tree of life. I pleaded with the Lord
- 38:58three times about this that it might
- 39:00leave me. But he said to me, "My grace
- 39:03is sufficient for you,
- 39:06for power is made perfect in weakness.
- 39:09Therefore, I will boast all the more
- 39:11gladly in my weaknesses, so that the
- 39:13power of Messiah may dwell in me. For
- 39:15Messiah's sake, then I delight in
- 39:17weaknesses and insults and distresses,
- 39:19in persecutions, in calamities. For when
- 39:22I am weak, then I am strong." All right.
- 39:24Now, in most Bibles,
- 39:30the response is in red.
- 39:35This is not Gabriel
- 39:40or some other messenger of the Lord.
- 39:43This wasn't an inward witness of the
- 39:45Holy Spirit speaking.
- 39:49Yeshua responds
- 39:52to Saul
- 39:56and I think it's
- 40:00divinely poetic
- 40:03that Yeshua responds. I I I've had to
- 40:06have shared this with you before.
- 40:11Here's the reason why I think Yeshua
- 40:13responds.
- 40:16Paul prays three times
- 40:20for something to be taken from him.
- 40:24THERE'S ONLY ONE OTHER GUY
- 40:26>> MHM.
- 40:27>> who has prayed three times to have
- 40:30something taken away from him and it
- 40:33wasn't taken.
- 40:36The cup was not removed. He had to drink
- 40:39it.
- 40:41And so when Saul is now in the same
- 40:45moment where he has a thorn in his side
- 40:49and he prayed three times for it to be
- 40:53taken. It was like Jesus was like, "Hey,
- 40:56Holy Spirit, I know you could speak and
- 40:58I know it's your dispensation, but
- 41:00Gabriel, I know you could go give a I
- 41:02want to let me talk to him because I I
- 41:05can empathize with that.
- 41:07>> I know what it is. I've been right there
- 41:12and
- 41:18no, no, no, no, no
- 41:20is running through this man's mind,
- 41:24but I'm going to let him know what I
- 41:26what I said yes to and invite him to say
- 41:29yes to the same thing. All right.
- 41:32So he says yes to that
- 41:36and that yes changes his perspective
- 41:40on his weaknesses, his persecutions, his
- 41:43insults and his infirmities.
- 41:47So, could it be Preston Morrison
- 41:51that some of our nos
- 41:55hinder us from having a perspective
- 42:00to treat what we could say yes to and
- 42:04see something a completely different
- 42:06way?
- 42:06>> Yeah.
- 42:08If I would have said no to the Holy
- 42:10Spirit's
- 42:12leading to transition the church,
- 42:16my perspective could have been, "The
- 42:19Lord is trying to take something away
- 42:20from me, and I'm not going to let him do
- 42:22it. You gave it to me. You can't take it
- 42:24back. You're an Indian giver."
- 42:27But because I said yes, my entire
- 42:30perspective was different
- 42:32because of a yes.
- 42:35The no would have gave me a perspective
- 42:38that would have been negative. But the
- 42:40yes gave me a perspective that wasn't
- 42:43just positive. It was in line with what
- 42:45heaven was thinking about what was a
- 42:49sign for my life in this in this season.
- 42:51So I'm like my
- 42:55this is like a organic thought that's
- 42:57just growing. I think there's a lot of
- 43:02there's a lot of times I've said no and
- 43:04as a result I had a narrative
- 43:09that I would have never had if I said
- 43:12yes.
- 43:15It comes back to
- 43:18when we say no, we think we know.
- 43:23And on the other side, hindsight has
- 43:25taught us time and time again.
- 43:26>> Yep.
- 43:27>> And we see all throughout scripture.
- 43:28Yep. When one gains the value of
- 43:31hindsight to be able to look back at a
- 43:33no they were giving Jonah
- 43:37and then see
- 43:41the moment my heart switched from no to
- 43:43yes
- 43:45that wasn't the only thing that changed.
- 43:47>> Mhm.
- 43:50>> Mhm. And this is why I think it's
- 43:52important to
- 43:55we're not begging,
- 43:57but we are strongly saying as big
- 44:00brothers.
- 44:04Don't linger in the wrong nose. That's
- 44:06right.
- 44:10Because there's something, you know, the
- 44:12question everybody loves to ask is why?
- 44:15Why?
- 44:17What I love about Jesus in the garden,
- 44:19Jesus isn't saying, "Why me?
- 44:23Why me? Why me?" He's saying,
- 44:28"Are you sure of me?"
- 44:30>> If it could if this cup could be passed
- 44:32to anybody else,
- 44:32>> right?
- 44:34>> Oh, only me.
- 44:38[clears throat]
- 44:40>> I'm the only one that can say yes.
- 44:44He's not asking anybody else. And Timmy,
- 44:47this is the transition.
- 44:51I think the enemy wants us to look at
- 44:53the cost of the yes, the annoyance of
- 44:56the yes. And the Lord is going,
- 45:01Timothy
- 45:02Preston, are are you not catching the
- 45:05divine compliment my request
- 45:08truly is?
- 45:12For example, out of all the daddies in
- 45:14the history of the world,
- 45:15>> Mhm.
- 45:17>> I'm only asking one and trusting one to
- 45:21care for the heart of this boy.
- 45:26>> When I gave 2,000 nos, I was not
- 45:28thinking about it like that.
- 45:29>> Of course not.
- 45:30>> That this was a compliment from my
- 45:32creator.
- 45:34Timmy, the most excruciating requests
- 45:36are divine compliments from our creator.
- 45:39But the enemy doesn't want us to see it
- 45:41like that.
- 45:41>> Not at all.
- 45:43>> He wants to He wants us to see us being
- 45:46He wants us to see the request as an
- 45:48inconvenience,
- 45:50as a
- 45:53breach of what we thought our covenant
- 45:55was, as a deal broken, a promise
- 46:04augmented
- 46:05or changed. Yeah. You didn't,
- 46:08>> right?
- 46:08>> You didn't tell me.
- 46:09>> This is not what you said.
- 46:10>> This is not what you said. You didn't
- 46:12>> That's not what I thought you meant, you
- 46:14know.
- 46:15>> Um,
- 46:17>> and yeah, the second the switch flips,
- 46:19Paul goes from saying, "I don't want
- 46:21this. I don't want this. I don't want
- 46:23this."
- 46:25Annoyed with the weakness to immediately
- 46:29flipping, "Oh, I can keep all this and
- 46:32rejoice in it. I'm weak. I'm weak now.
- 46:36really really weak.
- 46:37>> I'll brag [laughter]
- 46:39about the very thing 3 minutes ago I was
- 46:42complaining most about.
- 46:43>> Hey, you know I got this thorn in my
- 46:44side. Hey, come over here. No, for real.
- 46:46I really got a thorn in my side. It's
- 46:47really terrible.
- 46:48>> Hey, Thomas. [laughter]
- 46:50Thomas, come over here.
- 46:52>> I want you to see.
- 46:53>> Put your hand in my side.
- 46:55>> Don't do that because I to this day
- 46:59Don't do that. Don't do that. [laughter]
- 47:01Yeah. No, don't do that. Cuz cuz to this
- 47:04day,
- 47:06one of the most gangster moves
- 47:12in all of human history
- 47:15is to get up from a grave
- 47:19and a body
- 47:21that is glorified.
- 47:24And I guess you get to tell it what to
- 47:26do. [laughter]
- 47:28And you just are like, "But keep those
- 47:30there. Keep the scars there. Those will
- 47:32benefit me. Nobody's going to recognize
- 47:35me without them.
- 47:42>> A glorified body shouldn't have no
- 47:44blemishes,
- 47:45let alone no gaping wounds.
- 47:49>> He keeps them there on purpose
- 47:52just so other people can be Oh, that
- 47:55that's got to be him. Cuz that's the
- 47:56same spot where the wounds were
- 48:00received.
- 48:03Like like it is
- 48:06that's what we should be doing with our
- 48:08yeses
- 48:11still pointing to the wounds
- 48:13>> and going hey I got this from
- 48:16>> we're people of the cut.
- 48:18>> Oh okay I you know what I all right Holy
- 48:21Spirit I'm slow I get it.
- 48:28He wasn't going to remove the evidence
- 48:30of his yes.
- 48:36I voluntarily
- 48:42chose
- 48:45to die.
- 48:47And I won't remove the evidence
- 48:50>> of my yes. [clears throat]
- 48:54I'm not going to do it. I'm not removing
- 48:56the evidence of my yes.
- 48:58>> The fact that the scars
- 49:02in part were meant to serve as a
- 49:05reminder of the cost
- 49:08of a yes. See, we can't put Jesus
- 49:12glitter on this stuff.
- 49:13>> No, we can't. No, we can't.
- 49:15>> And in the pew, it's like we love to we
- 49:18love to sprinkle the Jesus glitter.
- 49:20>> That's right. Cuz we want everybody to
- 49:21feel good. And and
- 49:24yeses don't feel good. Yes is going to
- 49:25kill you. But child, you going to be
- 49:28glorified on the other side of it. Paul
- 49:30[screaming]
- 49:32>> Paul gave Jesus his yes.
- 49:36And it didn't change the things
- 49:40that were hurting him.
- 49:40>> No, it did not.
- 49:42>> It changed how he saw them.
- 49:43>> That's exactly right.
- 49:44>> It changed how he talked to them.
- 49:45>> That's exactly right.
- 49:46>> And it changed how he let them shape
- 49:50him.
- 49:50>> That's right.
- 49:52This is part of the evidence of the
- 49:53scars.
- 49:54>> That's right.
- 49:55>> These scars
- 49:57tell a story.
- 49:58>> Yep.
- 50:00>> And I will not
- 50:01>> Yeah.
- 50:02>> Let the evidence of my Yes.
- 50:03>> Yeah.
- 50:04>> be wiped
- 50:05>> from the records.
- 50:06>> Yeah.
- 50:09>> I I think sometimes we our flesh wants
- 50:12to hope that a really big yes will lead
- 50:16to a season of not being asked.
- 50:19[laughter]
- 50:20Oh,
- 50:22>> and what I feel like wow
- 50:25we're doing in this episode is to say
- 50:29you probably need to start wrapping your
- 50:30mind around the fact that if the initial
- 50:33yes is this weighty and big and hard to
- 50:37for you to give to him.
- 50:40>> There's more where that came from.
- 50:41>> There's more where that came from and
- 50:44not the opposite. Will you leave me
- 50:46alone now? Okay, I'm gonna say yes. Are
- 50:48you done? You're done with your You're
- 50:50done with your inquiries. You're done
- 50:51with your requests, right? I'm saying
- 50:53yes to this, Lord.
- 50:56>> I I've met my quota for the for the
- 50:59month. I've met my quota for the year.
- 51:01>> You told me you wanted me to volunteer
- 51:03in the parking lot in Phoenix,
- 51:05>> right?
- 51:06>> In the summer. I've done it. Are you
- 51:08good now? Are we are will you leave me
- 51:11alone now? It's not happening.
- 51:13>> Your big yes doesn't buy you time.
- 51:17It leads to another question almost
- 51:19immediately, [laughter]
- 51:21another request.
- 51:24And I I will tell you if if we talk
- 51:27about because I guarantee you, Timmy,
- 51:29there's some people that are like,
- 51:30[sighs and gasps]
- 51:31>> "But why should I say yes?" And they
- 51:33have a laundry list of reasons why they
- 51:35think they shouldn't.
- 51:36>> Mhm.
- 51:38>> I think there's a variety of ways. And I
- 51:40want I want to hear your perspective.
- 51:42Why should someone say yes?
- 51:46My mind immediately goes to the pleasure
- 51:48of the Lord.
- 51:51I go back to Noah.
- 51:53Can you imagine being Noah?
- 51:56How ostracized he was.
- 51:58>> Mhm.
- 51:59>> During
- 52:01desert drought.
- 52:03>> Mhm.
- 52:04>> Building a big boat no one saw the need
- 52:07for.
- 52:07>> Mhm.
- 52:08>> For decades.
- 52:09>> Mhm.
- 52:11>> And then it rains and he and his family
- 52:14are left. Mhm.
- 52:17>> And when it's all over and the waters
- 52:20subside,
- 52:23it's just him and he's the patriarch of
- 52:27this little burgeoning tribe.
- 52:31Timmy, he could have gotten off that
- 52:33boat and started putting stakes in the
- 52:36ground in all of his favorite places.
- 52:39That's mine. That's mine. This is where
- 52:42our second house is going. This is where
- 52:44our third house is going. Ain't nobody
- 52:46here to take it,
- 52:47>> right?
- 52:48>> This is mine,
- 52:49>> right?
- 52:51>> My flesh at 18, 19, that's probably what
- 52:54I would have been thinking.
- 52:54>> Mhm.
- 52:55>> I'd have spent my time on that boat in
- 52:57[clears throat] the storm going,
- 52:59>> "What land do I want?"
- 53:00>> Mhm.
- 53:01>> Now, it depends where this boat finishes
- 53:03up, but I act one, scene one, right?
- 53:07>> I'm going to claim my territory.
- 53:09>> Yep.
- 53:10>> What was his first act? He built an
- 53:13altar.
- 53:14and he sacrificed.
- 53:16And what does scripture record about the
- 53:19smell
- 53:21of said sacrifice?
- 53:24>> It created a pleasing
- 53:27aroma.
- 53:28>> That's right.
- 53:29>> To the king of the universe.
- 53:31>> Yep.
- 53:33>> Pleasing.
- 53:37I've been telling people all summer. I
- 53:38We were kidding when I picked you up
- 53:40from the airport this morning. We both
- 53:42took some time off this summer and I
- 53:43call mine paternity leave.
- 53:45>> Exactly right. That's what you have
- 53:46>> because we're fostering a five-day old
- 53:49and have for three months.
- 53:51But [clears throat] I've been telling
- 53:52people
- 53:55I've never felt the pleasure of the Lord
- 53:57more.
- 54:00>> And and what I would say is in the past
- 54:03I would have said than I am in this
- 54:05season of my life. I am so much more
- 54:08specific at 48 than I was at 18.
- 54:14I am seeing the pleasure of the Lord
- 54:17more with this yes.
- 54:19>> Yes, sir.
- 54:20>> And all of its subsequent yeses
- 54:23than maybe I ever have with any other
- 54:26request
- 54:28he's given me.
- 54:31There is a look on his face.
- 54:34My here, this is probably the oneliner.
- 54:39When my when the face of my flesh has a
- 54:44scowl,
- 54:46thinking about the cost of this. Yes.
- 54:50When I give it to him,
- 54:52the look on his face is unbridled
- 54:55>> pleasure. This is my son
- 54:59>> in whom I'm well pleased.
- 55:04There is something about
- 55:08his pleasure that as I get older is
- 55:11becoming my addiction.
- 55:14And that's why I think like I look
- 55:15through I am 3 four years older,
- 55:205 years older than when we were praying
- 55:22about adopting Maxon.
- 55:25And so when we were praying about
- 55:26adopting Maxon, it was I'm going to be
- 55:31when he graduates high school,
- 55:34>> I'm I'm going to be
- 55:3760.
- 55:40Well, if the Lord asks us to adopt this
- 55:41little girl,
- 55:43Holly's going to be almost 70
- 55:47when this little girl graduates high
- 55:49school. And here's what's crazy. I said
- 55:51no 2,000 times to the Lord with Maxon.
- 55:56And this this may sound absolutely
- 56:00heretical to people. I didn't even have
- 56:03to pray about this little girl.
- 56:07And this is the power of learning
- 56:13what God does
- 56:15with the right. Yes.
- 56:18Whatever it costs,
- 56:20if he made the request, it's always
- 56:23worth it. And please, please hear me.
- 56:25I'm not telling you there will be
- 56:28awards, accolades,
- 56:31and an open heaven of financial
- 56:33abundance.
- 56:36Here's what I'm telling you. The most
- 56:38excruciating
- 56:40yeses
- 56:42are a red carpet welcome mat. your heart
- 56:47rolls out for the king of the universe
- 56:51and the most excruciating yeses bring
- 56:54him exponentially closer.
- 56:57So, um you know when when you said what
- 57:00you just said, I didn't even have to
- 57:01pray about it. The the first thought I
- 57:04had was who in the Bible did
- 57:08this was a sovereign God telling them
- 57:09what to do and they just did it.
- 57:11[clears throat]
- 57:15>> Imagine me
- 57:17telling a Lord
- 57:20and B a bonafide Lord.
- 57:23Hey duly noted heard what you said. Just
- 57:25want to go pray about that. Make sure
- 57:27that's you.
- 57:29Uh, first Kings 17.
- 57:34There's three words I wrote I want, but
- 57:36I got to give you the story before I can
- 57:37give you the three words. All right.
- 57:41Now, Elijah the Tishbite, one of the
- 57:43settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, "As
- 57:46Adonai, God of Israel lives,
- 57:49before whom I stand, there shall be no
- 57:52due or rain these years except at my
- 57:56word." Do you know how gangster that is?
- 57:58He doesn't preface it by saying, "Thus
- 57:59said the Lord." [laughter]
- 58:01He just says, "As Adonai, God of Israel,
- 58:04lives before whom I stand." All right?
- 58:06So God is co-signing on his words. Okay?
- 58:09Imagine having a relationship that
- 58:11close. Okay? Then the word of Adonai
- 58:14came to him saying, "Leave this place.
- 58:15Turn eastward and hide yourself by the
- 58:18Wadi Cherith, east of the Jordan. It
- 58:21will come about that you will drink from
- 58:23the Wadi. I have also commanded the
- 58:26ravens to feed you there." So he went
- 58:28and did according to the word of Adonai.
- 58:30He went and lived by the wadi cherith
- 58:33which is east of the Jordan. The ravens
- 58:35kept bringing him bread and meat in the
- 58:37morning and bread and meat in the
- 58:39evening and he drank from the watti.
- 58:41Then it came to pass after a while that
- 58:44the watti dried up because there was no
- 58:47rain in the land. Then the word of
- 58:49Adonai came to him saying, "Arise,
- 58:53go to Jerusalem.
- 58:55Go to
- 58:57Go to Dan. Go to Napali.
- 59:00>> Go to
- 59:03Manessa.
- 59:07Go to Zarapath.
- 59:12Ain't nowhere in Israel good enough for
- 59:14ME TO GO RIGHT NOW. You telling me to go
- 59:17to the hometown of Jezebel?
- 59:21[laughter]
- 59:21Arise. Go to Zerapath of Siden and stay
- 59:26there.
- 59:28I have just commanded a widow there to
- 59:30provide for you.
- 59:33First three words in TOV. So he arose.
- 59:40And so he went. That's where I'm trying
- 59:43to get my yes to. Yeah.
- 59:45>> You tell me what to do.
- 59:47I So Tim arose.
- 59:52The Lord told him to do a thing. Tim got
- 59:55up and did it.
- 59:57I want the yes to be such that it's in
- 1:00:00my action and not with my mouth. I've
- 1:00:03said enough nos out of my mouth.
- 1:00:04>> Yeah.
- 1:00:05>> On the request that he's asked. The Holy
- 1:00:08Spirit has asked me to do so many things
- 1:00:09throughout my 30 years where
- 1:00:14my no was my protection. My no was my
- 1:00:17fear. My no was my insecurity. My no was
- 1:00:20my
- 1:00:22perceived limitations. I've done enough
- 1:00:24of that. Um
- 1:00:27I don't even want to say yes. I want to
- 1:00:30do yes.
- 1:00:30>> It's great. I just want to do it.
- 1:00:34So I have a song before we end.
- 1:00:37It's the old church song. It's been in
- 1:00:39my head since we got in the car. I
- 1:00:40actually sang a little bit of it, but
- 1:00:41you kept talking, so I just stopped.
- 1:00:44Um,
- 1:00:46this is the perfect song for this
- 1:00:49episode.
- 1:00:53I say yes, Lord, yes to your will and to
- 1:00:57your way. I say yes, Lord, yes.
- 1:01:02With my whole heart, I'll obey. When the
- 1:01:06spirit speaks to me, with my whole
- 1:01:09heart, I'll agree. And my answer will be
- 1:01:12yes, Lord. Yes.
- 1:01:16>> It's beautiful.
- 1:01:17>> That's the jam right now.
- 1:01:18>> And may that be the song our heart sings
- 1:01:23every time.
- 1:01:23>> Every single time
- 1:01:26>> he asks.
- 1:01:29>> Every single time.
- 1:01:30>> This is the way. And there
- 1:01:34there's a divine story
- 1:01:38on the path of the divine. Yes. Mhm.
- 1:01:40>> And the flesh
- 1:01:44wants to think we can be the thief on
- 1:01:47the cross.
- 1:01:50>> One last. Yes.
- 1:01:54And I'm good.
- 1:02:01>> It doesn't work like that.
- 1:02:04>> It did for the thief and it does from
- 1:02:06time to time.
- 1:02:06>> Absolutely. I don't even want to be in
- 1:02:07that position. But Timmy, what I would
- 1:02:09say and what I know you would say
- 1:02:10[laughter]
- 1:02:12is what the thief missed out on.
- 1:02:16The point of walking with Jesus isn't to
- 1:02:20get out of hell.
- 1:02:21>> That's not correct. That that's that's
- 1:02:23absolutely correct.
- 1:02:24>> Yes. Yes. The point of walking with
- 1:02:27Jesus
- 1:02:30is to get so close to him
- 1:02:33that without even realizing it, I'm
- 1:02:35becoming more like him.
- 1:02:36>> Just Yeah. This this is the difference
- 1:02:39between the once and for all
- 1:02:42sanctification
- 1:02:46and the thief says thank you.
- 1:02:47>> That's right.
- 1:02:49>> And then there is the as long as you
- 1:02:52live.
- 1:02:52>> That's right.
- 1:02:53>> ongoing act.
- 1:02:54>> Absolutely.
- 1:02:54>> Of sanctification.
- 1:02:55>> Oh, absolutely.
- 1:02:56>> Absolutely correct.
- 1:02:57>> And this is where the beauty is found.
- 1:03:00>> That's right.
- 1:03:01>> In the bloody.
- 1:03:02>> That's right. Would you just pray as we
- 1:03:04wrap up? Especially for our friends,
- 1:03:06Demi,
- 1:03:08who have received the divine compliment.
- 1:03:11Now, they're they're probably not seeing
- 1:03:12it right now as the divine, but they
- 1:03:14have received a divine compliment
- 1:03:18by receiving an excruciating request
- 1:03:21from the Lord.
- 1:03:22>> Yes. You could have asked anybody for
- 1:03:24this and you asked me.
- 1:03:25>> You came to me. You came to me. Would
- 1:03:29you just pray over our friends,
- 1:03:30especially the ones who are right at
- 1:03:33that fork in the road?
- 1:03:34>> So, Holy Spirit, I thank you so much for
- 1:03:36my brothers and sisters, for your sons
- 1:03:38and daughters.
- 1:03:39Thank you for giving Preston and I
- 1:03:44this topic. Um,
- 1:03:48we're not smart enough to come up with
- 1:03:49this stuff and we never know how you're
- 1:03:53going to lead us, Holy Spirit. But I
- 1:03:55want to pray for my brothers and
- 1:03:56sisters. God, your sons and daughters
- 1:03:59who have
- 1:04:01before them an excruciating yes,
- 1:04:06an allin yes, an all or nothing
- 1:04:12yes.
- 1:04:14A death to the flesh.
- 1:04:18Yes.
- 1:04:20Holy Spirit, I pray
- 1:04:25that they would give you a yes
- 1:04:30that makes
- 1:04:32death quick.
- 1:04:36>> The only reason why this is hurting so
- 1:04:38much
- 1:04:40is because you're withholding your yes.
- 1:04:43>> The quicker you say yes,
- 1:04:45the quicker you die and the closer
- 1:04:48you'll be.
- 1:04:51to the purposes and the plans
- 1:04:54that God has orchestrated for your life.
- 1:04:58So God, if the yes comes with grief, let
- 1:05:00him cry.
- 1:05:02If the yes comes with frustration, let
- 1:05:04them yell.
- 1:05:07If the yes comes with sadness,
- 1:05:11let them
- 1:05:14sit in it.
- 1:05:16But at the end, may this Yes.
- 1:05:21bring about their glorious next
- 1:05:25for your kingdom
- 1:05:29in Jesus name.
- 1:05:31Amen.
- 1:05:32>> Amen.
- 1:05:33Amen. Too much fun. Listen to me now.
- 1:05:38You said yes to Jesus. You had
- 1:05:41salvation.
- 1:05:41>> You did.
- 1:05:44>> You did. Make sure you're saying yes to
- 1:05:46Jesus today because this is your
- 1:05:51partnership in the ongoing work of
- 1:05:54sanctification as the Holy Spirit moves
- 1:05:57in and through you
- 1:06:01to make you more like Jesus. This is the
- 1:06:04way. I know it hurts,
- 1:06:07but it hurts so good.
- 1:06:10The bigger the request,
- 1:06:13the more important
- 1:06:16it is for you to give the right
- 1:06:17response. We're praying for you. We've
- 1:06:20been there.
- 1:06:22And every yes is worth it.
- 1:06:24>> It is.
- 1:06:24>> When God is the one who makes that
- 1:06:26absolutely it is.
- 1:06:26>> I love you so much. We love you so much.
- 1:06:29I cannot wait to sit with you again.
- 1:06:33Until then, I love you. I'll see you
- 1:06:36next time.
