- 0:06Hello and welcome to day 21 of
- 0:08Lifebook's 30-day challenge. So great to
- 0:11have you here with me today as we start
- 0:13to explore one of the most important
- 0:14Lifebook categories of all, your career.
- 0:18You know, we live in an age of
- 0:20unprecedented opportunity.
- 0:23When it comes to career, we have a wider
- 0:25range of choice than ever before in
- 0:27human history.
- 0:28There are hundreds of professions that
- 0:29didn't even exist a few decades ago.
- 0:32You can choose just about any career you
- 0:34want, and let me tell you something, it
- 0:36didn't used to be that way throughout
- 0:38most of human history. You can literally
- 0:41pick a career that you like, and then
- 0:42you can learn about it and get good at
- 0:45it, and trade the fruits of your labor
- 0:47for the fruits of labor of others.
- 0:49That's pretty amazing. It hasn't always
- 0:51been that way.
- 0:52So what's the result of all this
- 0:55wonderful opportunity?
- 0:57Information overload. I mean, most of us
- 1:00are just completely overwhelmed. There
- 1:02are too many choices. It's bewildering
- 1:04and confusing.
- 1:06With all the possibilities, how do we
- 1:08possibly choose?
- 1:11Well, the answer is very, very
- 1:14carefully.
- 1:16I know an accountant who hates his job,
- 1:18can't stand going to work every day,
- 1:20feels like his life is passing him by.
- 1:23He's pretty good at what he does, but I
- 1:25don't like to work with him cuz he's a
- 1:26downer. He's not happy. He's not
- 1:28fulfilled. So why would I want to work
- 1:30with someone like that?
- 1:31His career is a chore for him, and it
- 1:34shows.
- 1:35Guess what? He chose wrong.
- 1:39On the other hand, I know another
- 1:41accountant who's absolutely in her
- 1:43bliss. She's one of the happiest people
- 1:45I know. She lives for that stuff,
- 1:47spreadsheets and math. I mean, digging
- 1:49into a tax return for her is like eating
- 1:51a hot fudge sundae. She absolutely loves
- 1:53it. I call her up and ask her how she's
- 1:55doing, and she says, "If I were doing
- 1:57any better, I wouldn't be able to stand
- 1:59myself."
- 2:00I love working with her cuz she's happy.
- 2:03She loves what she does, and it shows.
- 2:05She chose right.
- 2:08But, you know, that's not always the
- 2:09case. It doesn't always work that way,
- 2:11right? A more common story is, you know,
- 2:13someone starts off young, full of
- 2:15dreams, full of ambitions, meets someone
- 2:18you love, get married, have a kid, take
- 2:21a job to pay the rent. Might not be an
- 2:23exciting job, you know, you don't
- 2:25especially love it, but you got to do
- 2:27what it takes to pay the bills. And we
- 2:29all do.
- 2:30And that begins the process of what
- 2:32becomes limited options.
- 2:35A year or two goes by, you have another
- 2:37kid, you buy a small house, you get a
- 2:40couple of cars, and now you're in deep.
- 2:44You don't have a fulfilling job. You
- 2:46don't have job satisfaction, but that's
- 2:47not the point. Your survival is at
- 2:50stake.
- 2:51You put the kids in daycare, your spouse
- 2:53gets a job because you need that second
- 2:55income. And then you wake up halfway
- 2:57through your life, and you say, "What
- 2:59the hell happened to me? It wasn't
- 3:01supposed to be this way. I used to have
- 3:03a dream for what I wanted to become, you
- 3:05know, for what I was going to do, for
- 3:06what I was passionate about, and now I
- 3:09know it's not going to happen for me.
- 3:11There's no hope now of finding work that
- 3:13I love. There's no use even thinking
- 3:15about becoming self-actualized or
- 3:18getting wealthy. I'm in too deep. I am
- 3:21stuck now."
- 3:23That's literally the way it usually
- 3:25happens. That story is all too common.
- 3:28Maybe that's your story.
- 3:29And if it is, that's okay because you're
- 3:32here to do something about it.
- 3:35I want to share a clip from the classic
- 3:38Lifebook program now that'll shed some
- 3:40light on how to navigate this critical
- 3:43category of our lives. Take a look.
- 4:09Choosing the ideal career can be a very
- 4:12complicated matter.
- 4:13But there are a few common sense things
- 4:16that we can consider.
- 4:18Your career is how you spend most of
- 4:20your time. Most of your waking hours get
- 4:23invested here. Your career is what you
- 4:25do.
- 4:26Now, no one wants to spend the hours of
- 4:29their life doing something they don't
- 4:31like. So, it makes good sense to pick
- 4:33something you like. Something you enjoy.
- 4:36It's just a smart, common sense thing to
- 4:38do.
- 4:41It also makes sense to pick something
- 4:43you're good at or could be good at.
- 4:46Because it doesn't make any sense to
- 4:48spend your life doing something that you
- 4:50don't have the aptitude to do well. That
- 4:52would be frustrating. You don't want to
- 4:54work and work and work and not get
- 4:56better.
- 4:57If you pick something you're natural at,
- 5:00you'll get better and better over time.
- 5:01And that's a good thing.
- 5:03You might have to experiment to find out
- 5:05what that is. You might have to try a
- 5:06few different things.
- 5:08But when it's all said and done,
- 5:09hopefully, you'll find something you can
- 5:12do well.
- 5:15The next consideration is financial
- 5:17abundance.
- 5:19The vast majority of us want careers
- 5:21that make us the most money possible.
- 5:23Not all of us. Not every career directly
- 5:26involves creating wealth. Being a
- 5:28stay-at-home parent, for instance, is a
- 5:29fantastic, amazing, very important
- 5:33career running the household.
- 5:34To do it right, you've got to be a
- 5:36chauffeur, a psychologist, a nurse, a
- 5:39housekeeper, a teacher, and more.
- 5:42But that career doesn't earn money
- 5:44directly. It's a support position.
- 5:47A missionary, a volunteer, a charity
- 5:51worker. These careers don't directly
- 5:54produce income.
- 5:55And if that's the path you've chosen,
- 5:57that's fantastic.
- 6:00But most of us want a career that
- 6:02maximizes our potential to create
- 6:04wealth.
- 6:06So, the question is, how do you do that?
- 6:09Well, as we discussed in the money
- 6:10category, the answer is contribute to
- 6:13others at the highest level of which
- 6:16we're capable. The greater our
- 6:17contribution, the greater our financial
- 6:20rewards.
- 6:24When I think about my premise for my
- 6:26career, it's pretty simple.
- 6:29I believe that a successful, fulfilling,
- 6:31rewarding career comes down to three
- 6:33things.
- 6:34First,
- 6:35I must choose something I love.
- 6:39Second,
- 6:40I must get good at it.
- 6:42And third,
- 6:44I must make a significant contribution
- 6:46to others if I want to create financial
- 6:48abundance.
- 6:50This is the recipe for a fulfilling
- 6:52career. This is the recipe for financial
- 6:55success.
- 6:57Let's take a brief look at each of these
- 6:59three things.
- 7:01The first step is to find work you love.
- 7:05Discover what's inside of you that's the
- 7:06best and highest possible use.
- 7:10Find your unique talent, then develop
- 7:13it.
- 7:14Now, this takes work. It takes practice.
- 7:17It doesn't just fall out of the sky and
- 7:19into your life.
- 7:21But if you can discover what you could
- 7:22be great at,
- 7:24and then apply yourself, that's the
- 7:26beginning of your dream career.
- 7:30Loving your work just gives you a huge
- 7:32advantage. You want to do it. You want
- 7:35to get out of bed every morning and go
- 7:37to work. You bring passion, joy,
- 7:40enthusiasm to your work. That creates
- 7:43energy.
- 7:45When you have passion for your work,
- 7:46every day is exciting. Every day is a
- 7:48joy. Every day is a blessing.
- 7:51You automatically bring a new level of
- 7:53thinking to your work.
- 7:55When you love what you do, success tends
- 7:57to come naturally.
- 8:01The second step is to get really good at
- 8:04what you do.
- 8:05Develop competence. Develop expertise.
- 8:09If you're competent, if you're an expert
- 8:11at your job, that means you can deliver
- 8:14the goods.
- 8:15If you're good at what you do, people
- 8:17will seek you out. They'll want to deal
- 8:19with you. You'll be more successful.
- 8:23Being good at what you do gives you
- 8:25self-esteem. You feel good about
- 8:27yourself, which makes you want to do
- 8:29even better.
- 8:30I think that everyone has the potential
- 8:32to have a fulfilling career because
- 8:34everyone has the potential to be good at
- 8:36something. We all have the capacity to
- 8:39develop a valuable, unique talent or
- 8:42ability, don't we?
- 8:44Find your talent, then develop it.
- 8:48The third part is this.
- 8:50That talent serves a need somewhere for
- 8:54someone.
- 8:55You must find a way to contribute.
- 8:58Find the need and fill it.
- 9:00When you can match your talent to the
- 9:02needs of others, that's the way to
- 9:04create wealth.
- 9:05If you make yourself valuable to people,
- 9:07they're going to pay you for what you
- 9:09do.
- 9:11Ask yourself, "How can I use my talent
- 9:13to help? What can I contribute?"
- 9:16People with their minds set on, "What's
- 9:18in it for me? What am I going to get out
- 9:20of this? What are you going to do for
- 9:21me?"
- 9:23They're going to have it rough. They're
- 9:24missing the point. They just don't
- 9:27understand the recipe for a life of
- 9:30abundance in all 12 categories.
- 9:33The question to ask is this.
- 9:35"How can I use my talent to help others?
- 9:40People who are wealthy have discovered
- 9:42and developed their talents and figured
- 9:45out how to match those talents to the
- 9:47needs of others.
- 9:49That's my premise. That's what I believe
- 9:51about career.
- 9:52Choose right. Choose something you love.
- 9:56Choose something you're good at. Choose
- 9:58something that contributes to others. If
- 10:00you do this,
- 10:02I believe that abundance will flow in
- 10:04your life.
- 10:10Lifebook is about creating your ideal
- 10:13life.
- 10:14First on paper and then moving toward it
- 10:17every day.
- 10:18It's an iterative process.
- 10:20If you aren't where you want to be in
- 10:22your career right now, you don't
- 10:23necessarily need to take an axe to your
- 10:25life and chop it all down immediately.
- 10:28You know, you don't need to put a ton of
- 10:29pressure on yourself to make huge
- 10:31changes tomorrow. You can definitely
- 10:34approach it more gently than that if you
- 10:35want to.
- 10:37Just getting in touch with what you want
- 10:39is the foundation that begins the
- 10:41Lifebook process.
- 10:43And sometimes that takes courage.
- 10:45Because most of us are so covered up
- 10:48with what happened in our lives that we
- 10:50don't even really remember what we want
- 10:52anymore if we ever knew in the first
- 10:54place.
- 10:55Doesn't hurt anything to take a look at
- 10:58what you really want. You don't
- 11:00necessarily have to tear your life
- 11:02apart.
- 11:03But then again, maybe you do. I don't
- 11:05know. That's up to you to decide.
- 11:08Before I leave you today, I just want to
- 11:10ask you a question that is going to get
- 11:12you thinking about tomorrow's career
- 11:14exercise.
- 11:15How did you choose the career that
- 11:18you're in right now?
- 11:20Did you consciously sit down and think
- 11:23through all the pros and cons and
- 11:25decide, this is what I have the
- 11:27potential to be good at. This is how I
- 11:29love spending my time. This is how I can
- 11:31make the most money,
- 11:33this is what I want to do for the rest
- 11:35of my life.
- 11:36Or did it kind of happen by accident?
- 11:39Did it sort of evolve over time?
- 11:42Did your parents push you into it? Did
- 11:44you choose it for the money?
- 11:46Don't let fate make this decision for
- 11:49you. Don't let your parents make it.
- 11:51Don't let your teachers make it. Don't
- 11:53let anyone else decide this for you.
- 11:56Don't even let money be the most
- 11:57important thing. Happiness is the most
- 11:59important thing. You want to do this
- 12:01consciously.
- 12:03You may want to choose a career out of
- 12:04genuine interest, one that gives you joy
- 12:08and fulfillment and excitement and above
- 12:10all happiness.
- 12:12Because usually that's where financial
- 12:15abundance is going to be found anyway.
- 12:17It's been said that if you're doing work
- 12:20that you truly love, you'll never work a
- 12:22day in your life.
- 12:24There's nothing better than doing work
- 12:26you love.
- 12:28Just getting connected with what you
- 12:29love is so important.
- 12:31Even if it's not what you're doing
- 12:33full-time right now. You know, just
- 12:34knowing what makes you feel excited or
- 12:36makes you feel fulfilled and passionate
- 12:39can begin the process of positive
- 12:41change.
- 12:43Just being aware of the goal of earning
- 12:45a living doing what you love can be
- 12:48very, very powerful.
- 12:51Now look, I'm not suggesting that
- 12:53everyone can find work that's just so
- 12:54fantastic that they jump out of bed
- 12:56every single morning with a huge smile
- 12:58on their face and race out the door to
- 13:00make a million dollars by noon by saving
- 13:03the world. That's probably not
- 13:04realistic.
- 13:05But if you're at least connected to what
- 13:07you really, really enjoy doing, if you
- 13:10know what that is, you're going to start
- 13:11to look for ways to do it.
- 13:13You'll constantly be scanning the
- 13:15environment for ways to contribute by
- 13:18using your talent.
- 13:20You might start to experiment with it,
- 13:21maybe on weekends or on evenings after
- 13:24you get home from your day job.
- 13:26You'll look for a way to eventually
- 13:27convert it to doing it full time.
- 13:31Thoughts become things. Remember that.
- 13:34You may wake up one day and find
- 13:36yourself in your dream career.
- 13:39Wherever you are right now, whatever you
- 13:42decide to do,
- 13:43find out what you're good at and what
- 13:45you love.
- 13:47Connect with the best that's inside of
- 13:49you.
- 13:50Really nurture your gifts and get good
- 13:52at your talents.
- 13:54Tomorrow, we're going to go deeper into
- 13:56this foundational category of your life.
- 13:59Until then, have a great day and I'll
- 14:01see you tomorrow as we explore your
- 14:04career together.
