You Win by Making Mediocrity Unacceptable — Transcript

1. 0:00I was thinking about,
2. 0:02like really successful folks and I was
3. 0:04like, what what really separates them?
4. 0:07Um
5. 0:08and it comes down to this.
6. 0:11You become undeniable
7. 0:13the moment you make
8. 0:15mediocrity unacceptable.
9. 0:21And I think the reason that that's
10. 0:23so important is that you need to have
11. 0:26higher standards than your customers do
12. 0:29for your service.
13. 0:30Which is incredibly difficult because
14. 0:32customers will always want more. If you
15. 0:34can deliver something in an hour,
16. 0:36they'll then think that anytime it's not
17. 0:38an hour, it's bad and they'll want 45
18. 0:40minutes. And so one of the things that I
19. 0:42love about Jeff Bezos is that he always
20. 0:43tries to make bets on things that he
21. 0:45knows will not change, which is that
22. 0:46humans will always want everything
23. 0:48immediately,
24. 0:49fast, easy and free. And so these are
25. 0:52the elements of the value equation. How
26. 0:54do I make something faster? How do I
27. 0:55make it easier? How do I make it
28. 0:57guaranteed, right? And how do I make the
29. 0:59outcome as big as amazing as possible.
30. 1:01And so we always have these hypothetical
31. 1:03ideals that we're never actually going
32. 1:04to accomplish because we are not some
33. 1:05sort of gods.
34. 1:07We just do our absolute best towards
35. 1:08working towards those ideals, but in
36. 1:10order to work towards those ideals, it
37. 1:11means you cannot be satisfied with the
38. 1:13existing, which means you have to have
39. 1:15your standards be higher than your
40. 1:16customers, which is always raising,
41. 1:18which means that you have to make
42. 1:21mediocrity unacceptable. And that is
43. 1:23when if you have your standards higher
44. 1:25than everyone else's, I promise you will
