- 0:00You're not far off. Sometimes that's
- 0:02exciting, and sometimes that's
- 0:04frustrating. You know that your home is
- 0:06almost there, but something keeps it
- 0:08from feeling complete. And a lot of men
- 0:11never figure out what that something is.
- 0:14My name is Chad and today I'm going to
- 0:16show you exactly what's holding your
- 0:18space back and give you four clear
- 0:20corrections that you can start using to
- 0:23bring the entire room together. If
- 0:25you're a returning subscriber, hit the
- 0:26thumbs up. If you're new here, hopefully
- 0:29by the end of this video you'll be a
- 0:30subscriber. Remember that if you would
- 0:32like our help in designing your room,
- 0:35you can have that help by clicking the
- 0:37link in the description below.
- 0:39Here's a common scenario. There's a
- 0:41solid sofa, a decent rug, and a layout
- 0:44that technically works. Nothing, by
- 0:46definition, is wrong. But the room still
- 0:49doesn't have that punch that you're
- 0:51expecting from it. It's just not coming
- 0:53together.
- 0:54What's the first thought that most
- 0:56people have in this situation? I need
- 0:58better furniture. What's interesting is
- 1:00the answer is rarely better furniture.
- 1:03So if it's not better furniture, what is
- 1:05it? Foundation. So how do we get
- 1:08foundation? We build it by adjusting
- 1:10four things. Your walls are going to set
- 1:13the tone, your focal point will set the
- 1:15direction, and the materials and weight
- 1:18you introduce are what make it all come
- 1:21together. If you get these right, your
- 1:23room will start to feel different almost
- 1:25immediately. First, let's fix the wall
- 1:27color. Surprisingly, a lot of people
- 1:29skip this, and that's a mistake. If your
- 1:31walls are too light, too flat, or
- 1:33slightly off-tone, everything you put
- 1:36into the room will feel disconnected. So
- 1:38give this a try. If you're between two
- 1:40colors, choose the slightly darker one.
- 1:44And instead of a flat gray or a bright
- 1:45white, choose colors with warmth. Earthy
- 1:48greens, deep neutrals, or softened
- 1:51browns. That's what gives the room depth
- 1:54and something for everything else to sit
- 1:56against. There are five paint colors
- 1:59that we've returned to again and again
- 2:01because they consistently create the
- 2:03kind of outcome that we're after. Depth,
- 2:06weight, and a sense of control in the
- 2:08room. I put those together in a short
- 2:10guide called stop guessing paint colors.
- 2:13You can find it in the description
- 2:15below. Next, we need to create one clear
- 2:18focal point. Many rooms have multiple
- 2:20half focal points. A TV, a piece of art,
- 2:24a window. Your attention is going in
- 2:26multiple directions, but nothing is
- 2:29clearly leading. You need to decide what
- 2:32is this room going to be centered
- 2:34around? For example, if it's the TV
- 2:36wall, mount it cleanly, center your sofa
- 2:39to it, and place your lighting so that
- 2:41it supports that wall. If it's a
- 2:43fireplace, everything should face it.
- 2:46Your seating, your rug, even your
- 2:48artwork should acknowledge it. If it's a
- 2:51large window or a view, don't block it,
- 2:54angle your seating toward it, and keep
- 2:56that line of sight open. If it's a
- 2:59statement piece like artwork or an
- 3:01antique, center it. Give it space and
- 3:04build the layout around it. When the
- 3:06focal point is clear, the room portrays
- 3:09a sense of purpose. After that, we're
- 3:12going to simplify our materials. It's a
- 3:14small change, but it has a wave of
- 3:17positive effect.
- 3:18Too many homes mix black, chrome, gold,
- 3:22and wood tones that don't match all in
- 3:24the same area. Individually, none of
- 3:27them are wrong, but together they create
- 3:29a lot of tension. Pick two dominant
- 3:32materials and repeat them throughout the
- 3:34room. That's it. Now the room reads as
- 3:37one space instead of pieced together.
- 3:40Fourth, we're going to add weight where
- 3:42the room feels light. For anyone with
- 3:44the feeling that their room is right on
- 3:46the edge of being there, I want you to
- 3:49stand in your room and look around. Does
- 3:51the coffee table or bed frame or sofa
- 3:54look too small for the space? Do the
- 3:56lamps not have the right shape to give
- 3:59off enough light? Are there accent
- 4:01chairs or decor that feel thin or
- 4:04undersized? If you answered yes to any
- 4:06of these, consider replacing those with
- 4:08something that has real substance. A
- 4:11coffee table with some thickness to it,
- 4:14made out of wood, stone, or something
- 4:16solid. A lamp with a proper shade that
- 4:19casts a warm, noticeable glow. A chair
- 4:22that doesn't feel like it could be moved
- 4:23with just one hand. You don't need to
- 4:26add more. You just need a few pieces
- 4:29that hold the space together. And if you
- 4:32look at these four together, wall color,
- 4:34focal point, material consistency, and
- 4:36visual weight, this is what creates that
- 4:39feeling of this room is finished. The
- 4:43question you always want to ask is, what
- 4:45is the room trying to be? Not just
- 4:47visually, but emotionally. Is it meant
- 4:50to feel grounded, relaxed, elevated,
- 4:53quiet? The answer to that is going to
- 4:55help guide you in choosing wall color, a
- 4:58focal point, the materials that appear,
- 5:00and how visual weight is presented.
- 5:03Remember, the principle remains the
- 5:05same. If the foundation isn't right, if
- 5:08any of these four elements are ignored,
- 5:11the room will always feel slightly off,
- 5:14no matter what you add to it. It's a
- 5:16cycle that many stay stuck in for years,
- 5:19but you can break it.

- 5:22up. If you feel like sticking around a
- 5:24while, feel free to subscribe. See you
