  1. 0:00This makes it impossible to learn
  2. 0:06anything.
  3. 0:08You really can't
  4. 0:11learn
  5. 0:13hard mathematics effectively.
  6. 0:16You can't learn physics. You can't
  7. 0:18become a good programmer.
  8. 0:21And you're going to have a really hard
  9. 0:22time trying to do it
  10. 0:24if if you don't
  11. 0:28try to do this.
  12. 0:31I I made this video
  13. 0:34in Spanish for my Spanish channel.
  14. 0:37And I was thinking, you know, this is
  15. 0:40this is something everyone needs to
  16. 0:42hear.
  17. 0:43And so I thought, let me just make the
  18. 0:45video really quick here for you all in
  19. 0:47English.
  20. 0:50When you are trying to learn something
  21. 0:53hard, like mathematics, and this is
  22. 0:55really important. When you are trying to
  23. 0:57learn something hard,
  24. 1:00obviously you need to be able to sit
  25. 1:02down and focus.
  26. 1:05Your your level of focus
  27. 1:08is more important
  28. 1:11than anything.
  29. 1:14Yes, how hard the subject is matters,
  30. 1:17but that is determined by your ability
  31. 1:20to attack it.
  32. 1:21If you can sit down
  33. 1:24and focus on something
  34. 1:28without distractions
  35. 1:30for an extended period of time, you're
  36. 1:33going to be able to learn it.
  37. 1:37The reality is,
  38. 1:40in order to focus,
  39. 1:42you have to I don't want to just say
  40. 1:44eliminate distractions. Turn your phone
  41. 1:47off, turn your computer off.
  42. 1:49You have to get rid of the negative
  43. 1:51stuff in your life.
  44. 1:54That's what really gets people.
  45. 1:57And this is different for everyone.
  46. 2:00You know, maybe you have toxic friends.
  47. 2:03Maybe it's family. Maybe it's a problem
  48. 2:06at work.
  49. 2:08Maybe it's your significant other.
  50. 2:14Eliminate the things in your life
  51. 2:17that are causing you distress
  52. 2:20and that are taking away your focus and
  53. 2:22your energy. You don't need that,
  54. 2:24especially
  55. 2:25when you're trying to learn something
  56. 2:27difficult.
  57. 2:29And that is the advice for this video.
  58. 2:32Get rid of all the bad stuff and bad
  59. 2:35people in your life so you can focus on
  60. 2:38yourself and improving yourself and
  61. 2:41learning the things that you want to
  62. 2:43learn.
  63. 2:45It is so important to do that. It is so
  64. 2:47important to have the ability to focus.
  65. 2:52Without that, you're not going to be
  66. 2:54able to learn hard things. You're not.
  67. 3:00You're not. And you know, try this.
  68. 3:02After this video is over,
  69. 3:05I want you to sit down and think about
  70. 3:07all the things
  71. 3:09that are taking your focus. All of the
  72. 3:11things
  73. 3:12that are taking away your mental energy.
  74. 3:17And what's going to happen is you're
  75. 3:18going to say, "Oh, yeah, this this and
  76. 3:20this. These are the problems in my life,
  77. 3:22but
  78. 3:23I can't do anything about it."
  79. 3:27That's rationalization. You're
  80. 3:29rationalizing things because you feel
  81. 3:31trapped.
  82. 3:32But the truth is you have free will. And
  83. 3:34I'm not saying your problems don't
  84. 3:35matter, but you can make choices to
  85. 3:38eliminate those things from your life or
  86. 3:41at least alleviate the situation, my
  87. 3:43friends.
  88. 3:46And yeah, and I don't want to say that
  89. 3:49you should just focus on the bad stuff
  90. 3:50in your life. Another strategy, I know
  91. 3:52the strategy which is really quite
  92. 3:54powerful
  93. 3:56is try to focus on the good in your
  94. 3:58life. You say, "Wait, you said eliminate
  95. 4:00distractions, eliminate the bad." Yeah,
  96. 4:03but the thing is this, a lot of times in
  97. 4:05our lives when we have problems,
  98. 4:07the problems are self-created.
  99. 4:10I used to know a guy used to say that
  100. 4:12when people didn't have problems, they
  101. 4:14would create them for themselves and we
  102. 4:16do that.
  103. 4:18If you
  104. 4:20focus on the good in your life, if you
  105. 4:22focus on the positive stuff in your
  106. 4:23life, say, "My life is great." Yes, you
  107. 4:26might be lacking something. Yes, there
  108. 4:27there's probably things you need. We all
  109. 4:29need things. We all face adversity.
  110. 4:32But if you focus on the positive on your
  111. 4:34life,
  112. 4:35it's going to make the negative seem
  113. 4:37less bad.
  114. 4:38It's going to allow you to focus more on
  115. 4:39the mathematics.
  116. 4:41And this this is huge. This is this is
  117. 4:43like this is this is something no one
  118. 4:45talks about and it is so important.
  119. 4:49And I shouldn't say no one talks about.
  120. 4:50You know, I I I interviewed a
  121. 4:52mathematician a long time ago.
  122. 4:55His name was Thomas Garrity. He wrote a
  123. 4:56book
  124. 4:57uh called All the Math You Missed but
  125. 4:59Need for Graduate School. You should buy
  126. 5:01it. I'll leave a link in the
  127. 5:02description. His book is very good.
  128. 5:04It's a good book. You'll learn from it.
  129. 5:05It helps him. It's his book. It's his
  130. 5:06book.
  131. 5:08Uh All the Math You Need but Missed. Uh
  132. 5:11All the Math You Need for Grad School
  133. 5:12but Missed.
  134. 5:13Anyways,
  135. 5:14his
  136. 5:16he had a video on
  137. 5:20on YouTube
  138. 5:22and it was about teaching.
  139. 5:25And he he was talking about
  140. 5:29how no matter what was going on in his
  141. 5:31day,
  142. 5:32he had to go in there and do his best.
  143. 5:35I'm paraphrasing here.
  144. 5:37Um but it was something like that. Like,
  145. 5:39"Oh, no matter what's going on in my
  146. 5:40life,
  147. 5:41you know, when I go in and teach, I have
  148. 5:43to do the best I can." And I remember
  149. 5:44watching that video. I was teaching at
  150. 5:46the time. I was thinking, "That's really
  151. 5:48good advice. You know, I have a lot of
  152. 5:49respect for this guy. It's good advice.
  153. 5:52It's kind of the same when you're
  154. 5:53studying. No matter what's going on in
  155. 5:55your life, you you want to be able to
  156. 5:59sit down
  157. 6:00and and focus.
  158. 6:03Right? And focus on the mathematics. And
  159. 6:05it's a little bit harder with learning
  160. 6:06because when you when you're teaching,
  161. 6:07yes, teaching is hard, but you're you're
  162. 6:10teaching something you already know.
  163. 6:11When you're learning, you're trying to
  164. 6:13learn something you've never seen. So,
  165. 6:17the way to do that,
  166. 6:18again, eliminate the negative
  167. 6:21and focus on the positive. And if you do
  168. 6:23those two things, it's going to make
  169. 6:25your learning so much better. You know,
  170. 6:26it's again, it's not just about what's
  171. 6:28the best math book, what's the best time
  172. 6:30to study, what's the best way to study.
  173. 6:33A lot of it is about how can I sit down
  174. 6:35and study
  175. 6:37effectively?
  176. 6:39And by effectively, I mean
  177. 6:42being able to focus.
  178. 6:44Not sitting there and thinking about
  179. 6:45your problems and being stressed all the
  180. 6:47time.
  181. 6:50So, do it. Focus on the positive in your
  182. 6:52life.
  183. 6:53Eliminate the negative.
  184. 6:57And you will find
  185. 6:59you will find
  186. 7:01things things will work out. And I'm
  187. 7:02going to look up I'm I'm going to look
  188. 7:04up Thomas's book, All the Math You
  189. 7:05Missed
  190. 7:06but Need for Graduate School.
  191. 7:10All the math you missed. Yeah, All the
  192. 7:12Math You Missed. It's called that.
  193. 7:14And
  194. 7:16check out his book. Yeah, All the Math
  195. 7:17You Missed
  196. 7:19uh but Need to Know for Graduate School.
  197. 7:20But it's really just called All the Math
  198. 7:21You Missed.
  199. 7:24And that philosophy that he applied to
  200. 7:26teaching,
  201. 7:27you know, I used.
  202. 7:29You know, sometimes I would I would go
  203. 7:31to class and I'd have a rough day or was
  204. 7:34up late playing video games or whatever
  205. 7:36whatever, right?
  206. 7:37And I'd try to
  207. 7:39focus on the job at hand despite my
  208. 7:41tiredness or problems.
  209. 7:44But yeah, learning learning is more than
  210. 7:46just
  211. 7:48the best books, the best time to study,
  212. 7:50the best way to stay It's It's really
  213. 7:51about being able to focus. And you're
  214. 7:54not going to be able to do that until
  215. 7:56you're in the right mindset. And the
  216. 7:58only way to get there is to get rid
  217. 8:01of the bad stuff in your life, my
  218. 8:02friends.
  219. 8:05Check out my books and courses. Those
  220. 8:07are in the description. And check out
  221. 8:09Thomas's book. It's funny, I'm just
  222. 8:11mentioning Thomas here randomly. Uh
  223. 8:14so
  224. 8:15it just came up naturally in the video,
  225. 8:16right? Because I remember I remember
  226. 8:18that video he had on YouTube where he
  227. 8:19talked about it. And uh
  228. 8:22it's it's a thing. And it's a thing when
  229. 8:24you're studying, right? You know, if if
  230. 8:25you're
  231. 8:27I mean, maybe you're in a relationship
  232. 8:28and you break up with your girlfriend or
  233. 8:29boyfriend. You're going to be stressed.
  234. 8:30It's hard to study. Uh maybe you've got
  235. 8:33some problems at work. It's going to
  236. 8:34You're going to be stressed. It's hard
  237. 8:35to study. Eliminate the bad, focus on
  238. 8:38the good. You got to have a clear head,
  239. 8:40right? Don't let stuff bring you down.
  240. 8:42Remember, many problems are
  241. 8:44self-created. Focus on the good stuff in
  242. 8:47your life. Stay strong, my friends.
