- 0:00I think people are scared of me. Really?
- 0:03No, SHUT THE [ __ ] UP.
- 0:05YOU SAY, "DON'T touch me. Don't touch
- 0:07me. Don't look at me. Don't Don't talk
- 0:08to me. I don't know who you [music]
- 0:09are."
- 0:10Chappell Roan lives the life that so
- 0:12many young girls are desperate for.
- 0:14But for some reason,
- 0:15>> [music]
- 0:16>> she seems to absolutely hate it.
- 0:17>> I don't give a [ __ ] if you think it's
- 0:18selfish of me to say no for a photo or
- 0:22for your time or to for a hug.
- 0:25That's not normal. That's weird.
- 0:27>> I wanted to understand how someone who
- 0:28became a well-known pop star on purpose
- 0:31could think like this.
- 0:33And to do that, we got to go back to
- 0:35before anybody knew her at all.
- 0:37>> Please give it up for Kaylee Rose.
- 0:39>> [applause]
- 0:41[music]
- 0:46[music and singing]
- 0:49>> I never thought in a million years
- 0:53that I would ever have this job.
- 0:57In my head, it just didn't seem
- 0:59like it it was even a possibility
- 1:02because I live in Willard, Missouri.
- 1:05Chappell's story sounds like something
- 1:07straight out of a movie. Small-town girl
- 1:09starts uploading cover songs to YouTube,
- 1:10[music]
- 1:11signs a record deal with Atlantic
- 1:12Records, and runs off and lives her life
- 1:15as a superstar.
- 1:17But in real life,
- 1:18things are never really that simple.
- 1:20What what ended their relationship if
- 1:22you're able to say? My relationship
- 1:24ended with my label like a lot of
- 1:26artists
- 1:27uh ended their relationships in 2020.
- 1:30Growing concern about a new and rare
- 1:32pneumonia-like virus
- 1:33>> Breaking news, the first [music] death
- 1:35from coronavirus here in the United
- 1:37States. And now with social distancing
- 1:39being a mandate, well, a lot of
- 1:40musicians are finding it increasingly
- 1:42difficult to record music and make a
- 1:44[music] living. You just get dropped if
- 1:46you're not making money in 2020. Like
- 1:48music industry crashed.
- 1:49>> At the height of the pandemic, Atlantic
- 1:51Records drops [music] her. She had no
- 1:52job experience, no backup plan, and no
- 1:55health insurance.
- 1:57But even the pandemic wasn't enough to
- 1:58stop Chappell. What was that experience
- 2:00like and how did you pick yourself back
- 2:02up afterwards? Um I think it was the
- 2:04best thing that could have happened to
- 2:05my career because it lit a fire [music]
- 2:07under my ass that I was just like, "I
- 2:10have to try to make this work."
- 2:12Singer-songwriter [music] Chappell Roan,
- 2:15who is being called pop's next big
- 2:17thing, and a lot of it is because of the
- 2:19success of her first studio album, The
- 2:20Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess,
- 2:22[music] went to number one on the US
- 2:24iTunes charts. Come on now.
- 2:26>> [music]
- 2:27[cheering]
- 2:28>> The Grammy Award for Best New Artist
- 2:31goes to
- 2:34Woo, I'm nervous. CHAPPELL ROAN!
- 2:37>> [screaming]
- 2:45>> AND JUST LIKE THAT, LESS THAN 5 years,
- 2:47she goes from being dropped from her
- 2:49label with no future to winning a
- 2:51Grammy.
- 2:52This is her moment.
- 2:54>> myself if I ever won a Grammy and I got
- 2:56to stand up here,
- 2:58I would demand that labels and the
- 3:00industry profiting millions of dollars
- 3:03off of artists would offer a livable
- 3:05wage and health care, especially to
- 3:08developing artists.
- 3:09>> [cheering]
- 3:10>> Labels, we got you. But do you got us?
- 3:15>> [cheering]
- 3:16>> In the music industry, the record label
- 3:17is often seen as the villain.
- 3:20But this time, something was different.
- 3:22You see, something was starting to
- 3:24change within Chappell.
- 3:27I think that my
- 3:29career has just kind of gone um really
- 3:31fast, and it's really hard to keep up.
- 3:33And so, I'm just I'm just being honest
- 3:35that it's
- 3:37I'm just having a hard time today.
- 3:39I don't care that it's normal. I don't
- 3:41care that this crazy type of behavior
- 3:45comes along [music] with
- 3:47the job, the career field I've chosen.
- 3:50It doesn't mean I want it. It doesn't
- 3:51mean that I like it.
- 3:53I don't want whatever the [ __ ] you think
- 3:56you're supposed to be entitled to
- 3:58whenever you see a celebrity. I don't
- 3:59give a [ __ ] if you think it's selfish of
- 4:00me to say no for a photo or for your
- 4:04time or to for a hug.
- 4:07That's not normal. That's weird. It's
- 4:09weird how people think that you know a
- 4:12person just cuz you see them online or
- 4:13you listen to the art [music] they make.
- 4:15That's [ __ ] weird. Now, people deal
- 4:17with fame in different ways. Some hide
- 4:19away, and then some embrace it.
- 4:22>> [music]
- 4:22>> And then there's others who fight back.
- 4:24They speak their mind and they go
- 4:25against the grain.
- 4:27>> [music]
- 4:27>> But when you do that and it goes too
- 4:29far,
- 4:30you become the monster.
- 4:37To like tell the photographer to shut
- 4:38the [ __ ] up? I think that completely
- 4:40like shattered what everyone thought was
- 4:43supposed to be like. That is not what a
- 4:45pop star is supposed to do. Initially,
- 4:47people praised Chappell for speaking her
- 4:49mind.
- 4:50But she kept going, and she kept getting
- 4:52into altercations with photographers.
- 4:53[music]
- 4:54And it started to get personal.
- 4:58Oh, here we go.
- 4:59You I deserve an apology.
- 5:02Wait, no?
- 5:05Now, I hate to break it to her, but
- 5:07>> [music]
- 5:07>> the paparazzi don't have to apologize to
- 5:09you. Plus, you're a public figure. Why
- 5:12even waste your energy on trying to
- 5:14force an apology out of a photographer
- 5:16who did something months ago? But
- 5:18nonetheless, she kept going. So, I'm
- 5:20just trying to go to dinner, and I've
- 5:22[music] asked these people several times
- 5:23to get away from me.
- 5:24>> Please step to the side. Step to the
- 5:25side.
- 5:26>> person I've asked [music] several times
- 5:27to to go away, and they will not.
- 5:29They're hiding their face because
- 5:30they're ashamed.
- 5:31>> [music]
- 5:31>> Then go away. So, I want all of you, I'm
- 5:34asking you kindly to please leave me
- 5:36alone.
- 5:38Yes. Can you give me something nice? Let
- 5:41her go. She started getting more and
- 5:42more irritated with every public
- 5:44interaction.
- 5:45And people started to notice.
- 5:48Even Boy [music] George responded to her
- 5:49on X by saying,
- 5:51"I've been doing this fame thing for a
- 5:52while, and you learn slowly
- 5:55>> [music]
- 5:55>> and painfully that you don't get a free
- 5:56pass once you turn yourself into a bird
- 5:58of paradise."
- 6:00"The trick is to own your fame."
- 6:02He goes on to say, "The world is at your
- 6:04feet. Stop kicking it." But Chappell
- 6:07seems to be proud of her new reputation.
- 6:09I think people are scared of me. Really?
- 6:12I think I made a big enough deal about
- 6:14not talking to me that people do not
- 6:15talk to me. Well, see, that's okay. As
- 6:18adults, we understand that [music] even
- 6:19famous people need their privacy. Plus,
- 6:22a big part of Chappell's fan base is
- 6:24kids. [music]
- 6:25So, as long as she loves the kids, I
- 6:27think everybody be cool. All of my
- 6:29friends who have kids are in hell.
- 6:31I don't know anyone [music] I actually
- 6:32don't know anyone who's like happy and
- 6:34has children.
- 6:38Damn it, Chappell. I don't I literally
- 6:39have not met anyone who's [music] happy,
- 6:42anyone who has like light in their eyes,
- 6:43anyone who has who's slept.
- 6:45>> Now, some people agree with her and were
- 6:47happy that she shined a light on the
- 6:49difficulties of raising kids.
- 6:50>> [music]
- 6:51>> And then some other people called her
- 6:52out for dissing motherhood. But either
- 6:54way, it set a precedent. Chappell didn't
- 6:56like talking to people. She didn't like
- 6:58children. And even if those two things
- 7:00aren't true, the public perception laid
- 7:03the groundwork for what came next.
- 7:06>> [music]
- 7:07>> March 21st, 2026.
- 7:09São Paulo, Brazil. Lollapalooza weekend.
- 7:13Jorginho Frello was in town, and if you
- 7:15follow soccer, you probably know his
- 7:17name.
- 7:18And if not, you've definitely heard of
- 7:19actor Jude Law. Now, Jorginho and Jude
- 7:22have something in common, or rather,
- 7:25someone. Catherine Harding is the wife
- 7:28of Jorginho, but she has an 11-year-old
- 7:30daughter with Jude Law named Ada. And
- 7:32Ada just so happens to be a huge
- 7:34Chappell Roan fan.
- 7:36Or at least she was.
- 7:38Jorginho posted a story on Instagram
- 7:39where he laid out exactly what happened
- 7:41to his wife, Catherine, and her
- 7:43daughter, Ada. So, the family, they were
- 7:45in São Paulo for Lollapalooza, and by
- 7:48coincidence, they were staying at the
- 7:50same hotel as Chappell.
- 7:52So, during breakfast, Ada noticed a girl
- 7:54with red hair, and she thought it might
- 7:57be Chappell, but she wasn't sure. So,
- 7:59she got up to get a closer look. Now,
- 8:01keep in mind, she didn't run up and ask
- 8:03for a photo, she didn't scream.
- 8:05>> [music]
- 8:05>> All she did was walk past, she looked at
- 8:07her, and smiled.
- 8:09But remember what Chappell said. Don't
- 8:11touch me. Don't look at me. Don't Don't
- 8:13talk to me. I don't know who you are.
- 8:15This is not good.
- 8:16People already think Chappell doesn't
- 8:18like children, or being talked to.
- 8:21She's got to make [music] a statement.
- 8:23It's got to feel genuine. I'm just going
- 8:25to tell my half of the story
- 8:28>> [music]
- 8:28>> of what happened today with
- 8:31a mother and child
- 8:32>> [music]
- 8:33>> who
- 8:35were involved with a security guard who
- 8:37is not my personal security.
- 8:39>> [music]
- 8:40>> I didn't even see I didn't even see a
- 8:43woman and a child. Like I did not No one
- 8:46came up to me. No one bothered me. Like
- 8:49[music] I was just sitting at breakfast
- 8:51in my hotel.
- 8:53I did not ask the security guard to
- 8:57go up and talk to this mother and child.
- 8:59I do [music] not hate people who are
- 9:01fans of my music. I do not hate
- 9:04children. Like that is crazy. I'm sorry
- 9:07to the mother and child that that
- 9:08>> [music]
- 9:08>> someone was assuming something that you
- 9:10would do something, and that if you felt
- 9:12uncomfortable,
- 9:14that makes me [music] really sad. You
- 9:15did not deserve that.
- 9:17>> Now, on the surface, she says all the
- 9:18right things, but people weren't really
- 9:21convinced. [music]
- 9:22Something about laying in bed and making
- 9:24faces while you're apologizing didn't
- 9:27[music] sit quite right. So, Catherine
- 9:29Harding posted her own video responding
- 9:31to this, [music] and talked about how
- 9:33even if the security guard wasn't her
- 9:35personal security, he was with her, and
- 9:38[music] he was really aggressive with
- 9:39her and her daughter. I think that you
- 9:41have a responsibility when you are
- 9:44a celebrity to
- 9:46to make sure, I guess, that the people
- 9:48that work for you and that act on your
- 9:49behalf are acting on your behalf. So,
- 9:52she didn't have her phone. She didn't
- 9:53try to take a picture. She didn't
- 9:55approach her.
- 9:57She literally didn't do anything. She
- 9:59just looked at her. Then came the
- 10:00security guard who, as I said, as my
- 10:02husband said, sorry, was
- 10:05very had a very aggressive tone. So, for
- 10:08him to come over to a table with just
- 10:12uh a woman and her daughter eating
- 10:14breakfast to kind of like berate and
- 10:17scold us and say that he was going to
- 10:19complain and tell me that I should be
- 10:21teaching my daughter to be better and
- 10:23that she's badly educated and we should
- 10:26respect people's privacy and we should
- 10:28not harass people and I must say, well,
- 10:30if this is the case that uh she doesn't
- 10:32even want people to look at her, she is
- 10:34very welcome to eat breakfast in her
- 10:36room because this here is a public area
- 10:39and I am a paying guest as well as her.
- 10:41Now, Georgina's response was even more
- 10:43direct. He went off on her Instagram,
- 10:45tagged Chapel directly, and wrote,
- 10:48"Without your fans, you would be
- 10:49nothing." And to the fans, she does not
- 10:52deserve your affection. Now, it gets
- 10:54worse. The backlash was so bad that the
- 10:57mayor of Rio de Janeiro, he banned
- 10:59Chapel from performing at the Total
- 11:01Mundo no Rio.
- 11:02>> [music]
- 11:03>> The mayor said, "As long as I'm in
- 11:04charge of this city, this young lady
- 11:06will never perform at Total Mundo no
- 11:09Rio."
- 11:10I doubt that Shakira would ever do that.
- 11:12All right, so let's zoom out for a
- 11:14little bit. From everything that we
- 11:16heard so far, one could say Chapel's the
- 11:18villain. She hates [music] kids. She
- 11:21hates the paparazzi. She doesn't like
- 11:22talking to her fans.
- 11:24>> [music]
- 11:24>> But, like I said earlier,
- 11:26life is never really that simple.
- 11:29Not that long ago, Chapel was just
- 11:31Kaylee Rose from Willard, Missouri. She
- 11:33was an underground cult favorite who was
- 11:35dropped from her label with no income,
- 11:36[music]
- 11:37and then almost overnight, she became
- 11:40one of the biggest pop stars on the
- 11:41planet.
- 11:42>> [music]
- 11:42>> She was diagnosed with depression and
- 11:44she was in therapy twice a week. And
- 11:46then at the same time, people are
- 11:47telling her, "Yeah, but you should still
- 11:49smile [music] for some pictures." Now,
- 11:51that doesn't excuse the Brazil
- 11:52situation, and a child should never be
- 11:55collateral damage in somebody's personal
- 11:57issues. But, I think it shines a light
- 11:59on a bigger conversation.
- 12:01See, as a culture, we make the mistake
- 12:03of putting celebrities on a pedestal and
- 12:05treating them as if they're this other
- 12:07being, and [music] we forget that
- 12:09they're people just like us, and they
- 12:11make mistakes just like we do. And as
- 12:13far as Chapel goes, I think she can
- 12:15learn something from this quote I always
- 12:16come back to [music] that Miley Cyrus
- 12:18said when she was talking about adapting
- 12:21to success in the music industry.
- 12:22>> You know what I think it is?
- 12:24I understand the business I'm in. I'm in
- 12:26the music industry. I'm in the record
- 12:29business. So, when I sign a contract,
- 12:32they're buying, you know, records that
- 12:34they wish to sell. So, I understand that
- 12:36I am setting myself up to become
- 12:37merchandise. But, let me know what you
- 12:39guys think in the comments. I thought
- 12:41this was an interesting story, and I
- 12:43tried to see it from both sides because
- 12:45it's easy to say Chapel [music] should
- 12:47just be nicer to people. But, at the
- 12:49same time, being in the spotlight and
- 12:51having this massive success so fast, it
- 12:54has destroyed a lot of people. So,
- 12:56I guess that's just the price of fame.
- 12:58Thank you guys so much for watching till
- 13:00the end. You know, while I was
- 13:01researching for this video, Chapel's
- 13:03story reminded me a lot of Katy Perry's
- 13:05story. It kind of has the same arc. You
- 13:07got a small-town girl from a super
- 13:08religious family. She goes off to be a
- 13:11pop star and eventually loses her way.
- 13:13>> [music]
- 13:14>> And so, if you like this story, I think
- 13:15you'll like my video on Katy Perry,
- 13:17which I'll leave on the screen here
- 13:18next.
- 13:19I'll catch you guys over there. Till
- 13:21next time.
- 13:22Peace.
