- 0:08of 2006 Ricky McGee from Queensland
- 0:11received an employment opportunity in a
- 0:14government Department in Port Hedland
- 0:15Western Australia this was an offer he
- 0:18couldn't refuse but there was only one
- 0:20issue Port Hedland is a 42-hour drive
- 0:22away from Queensland which involved
- 0:25driving through the Outback this wasn't
- 0:27a problem for Ricky he packed his bags
- 0:29and set off in his Mitsubishi challenger
- 0:31but Ricky never arrived at Port Hedland
- 0:33instead the following 71 days would be
- 0:37the beginning of an extraordinary
- 0:39chapter that unfolded as Ricky got
- 0:41stranded in the outback with no idea
- 0:43where he was no food water or shelter so
- 0:48what happened to Ricky McGee and did he
- 0:50survive this is wrong turn stranded in
- 0:54the Australian Outback
- 1:06despite his story being heard all over
- 1:08the news not much is known about Ricky
- 1:10himself we do know he was born in
- 1:12gippsland Victoria in the early 1970s
- 1:15but his family moved to Melbourne when
- 1:17he was young his childhood was described
- 1:19as happy but shortly after moving to
- 1:21Melbourne his father sadly killed
- 1:23himself which obviously had a massive
- 1:25effect on Ricky throughout his life he
- 1:28worked various jobs but could never gain
- 1:30anything permanent these jobs included
- 1:32selling carpets working as a prawn
- 1:34fisherman serving as a nightclub
- 1:36storesmen and practicing as an
- 1:38electrician his professional Journey
- 1:40eventually led him to become a bailiff
- 1:42but after getting into a fight in Perth
- 1:44he was arrested causing him to lose his
- 1:46job he then went on to be arrested for
- 1:48drug offenses which made it hard for
- 1:50Ricky to Land employment in 2006 at the
- 1:54age of 35 Ricky was unemployed but had
- 1:57been offered work in a government
- 1:58Department in Port Hedland Western
- 2:00Australia he agreed to the job and in
- 2:03January of 2006 he embarked on a journey
- 2:05which were taken across the buntine
- 2:07highway a desert route in the outback
- 2:09this is where his Infamous Story begins
- 2:12foreign
- 2:17mentioning that due to discrepancies in
- 2:19Ricky's accounts some understandable
- 2:21doubts around his story the
- 2:23circumstances surrounding Ricky McGee
- 2:25being stranded in the outback are
- 2:27somewhat unclear as he has changed his
- 2:29story countless of times throughout the
- 2:30years initially Ricky informed his
- 2:33Rescuers that his car had broken down he
- 2:35then said he left his car to search for
- 2:37help but ended up delirious and lost
- 2:39however he quickly changed this story he
- 2:42went on to say that he had given a ride
- 2:44to an Aboriginal hitchhiker while
- 2:46traveling between the towns of
- 2:47calcaringi and Halls Creek he claimed
- 2:50that at some point under the journey he
- 2:52asked The Hitchhiker to get him a drink
- 2:53out of his fridge and he believes that
- 2:55the hitchhiker drugged him and left him
- 2:57for dead stranded in the middle of the
- 2:59desert again this story was changed the
- 3:01one that he sticks with today I will say
- 3:04to me personally this one sounds the
- 3:05most unrealistic but here it is anyway
- 3:07in his autobiography published in 2010
- 3:11Ricky said he encountered three
- 3:13individuals by the roadside who had run
- 3:15out of fuel
- 3:16offering assistance Ricky agreed to give
- 3:19one of them a lift to a nearby petrol
- 3:20station however during a struggle he
- 3:23believed he was drugged which caused him
- 3:25to lose Consciousness when he regained
- 3:28awareness hours later he found himself
- 3:30in the captain's Camp being held hostage
- 3:32after an undisclosed period the
- 3:35assailants left and he woke up in a hole
- 3:37covered with black plastic he was then
- 3:39alone and stranded in the outback
- 3:42the Outback is a vast and captivating
- 3:45region in the heart of Australia it's
- 3:47characterized by its expansive red
- 3:48deserts rugged mountain ranges ancient
- 3:51rock formations and intimidating
- 3:53Wildlife that is somehow found a way to
- 3:55adapt weather conditions are extreme and
- 3:58harsh from scorching heat to Relentless
- 4:00droughts and freezing nights the Outback
- 4:03whilst captivating presents inherent
- 4:05dangers and its unforgiving nature can
- 4:07pose significant risk to those who
- 4:09Venture into its fast expanse people go
- 4:12missing in the outback every year and
- 4:14many of them are never and will never be
- 4:16found
- 4:20regardless of how we got there Ricky was
- 4:23now naked in the hot desert with nobody
- 4:25around no food water or civilization at
- 4:30first Ricky sat in confusion what had
- 4:32just happened to him was any of it even
- 4:34real sadly it was which meant he only
- 4:38had one option this was to find help
- 4:40Ricky embarked on a challenging journey
- 4:42through the desert devoid of clothing
- 4:44and Footwear with each passing day hoped
- 4:48to indulge as he still found no hope of
- 4:50rescue during the day he baked in the
- 4:52hot sun which would often reach 40
- 4:54Celsius or 104 Fahrenheit and at night
- 4:58he froze he knew that he had to find a
- 5:00water source and shelter if he was going
- 5:03to survive in perhaps the only Stroke of
- 5:05Luck Ricky had on his harrowing Journey
- 5:07thus far it had just been the end of
- 5:08rainy season which meant scattered
- 5:10pockets of water remained in the desert
- 5:13after a few days walking in the desert
- 5:15Ricky found a small dam which he made a
- 5:17makeshift shelter next to and decided to
- 5:20rest he now had shelter and water but
- 5:23Ricky was starving and needed food after
- 5:26a week with no food Ricky was ready to
- 5:28eat anything he could find as he lay in
- 5:31his makeshift Camp he saw a lizard run
- 5:33by without even thinking he quickly
- 5:36killed the wizard and lay it out in the
- 5:38sun to cook at this point he couldn't be
- 5:40picky with what he ate and he certainly
- 5:42wasn't he ate anything from lizards
- 5:44frogs and leeches to wild plants which
- 5:46in his own words if it tasted good he
- 5:49ate it Ricky after a few weeks in his
- 5:51initial shelter made the decision to
- 5:53move on he eventually found another
- 5:55water hole and set up camp he was now
- 5:57very weak and starving to death he knew
- 6:00that he wouldn't be able to go any
- 6:01further so he sat and waited he even
- 6:05created a cross for himself which he
- 6:07mounted on his shelter
- 6:09eventually on day 71 Ricky was found by
- 6:12jackaroo's located at the birandudu
- 6:14castle station jackaroo's is a term
- 6:17commonly used in Australia to refer to
- 6:19young male workers who assist with
- 6:20various tasks on a cattle station or
- 6:22sheep station they are essentially
- 6:24farmhands or Ranch hands who perform
- 6:26annual labor and help with day-to-day
- 6:28operations of the station Mark Clifford
- 6:30manager of the cattle station said it's
- 6:33a bit unclear what the trouble was with
- 6:34the car and why he ended up off the road
- 6:37he's walked for about 10 days to get to
- 6:39where he is before he's realized that
- 6:40he's got to set himself up some shelter
- 6:42and start trying to get some food into
- 6:44himself he basically sat where he was
- 6:47for about 10 weeks where he was found
- 6:49was described by the jackaroos as being
- 6:51one of the most remote places in the
- 6:53outback
- 6:58Ricky was described as being a walking
- 7:00skeleton when he was found and he was
- 7:01severely malnourished and sunburned he
- 7:04was flown to hospital where it was
- 7:06revealed that he had lost over half of
- 7:07his body weight which was initially 230
- 7:09pounds and it dropped to 105 pounds
- 7:12despite this because Ricky kept himself
- 7:15well hydrated throughout the ordeal he
- 7:17was in surprisingly good shape all
- 7:19things considering and didn't require
- 7:21any serious medical attention
- 7:23he discharged himself from the hospital
- 7:25six days later
- 7:26following Ricky's ordeal the Australian
- 7:29media raised doubts about certain
- 7:30aspects of his account and reported his
- 7:32attempts to sell his story to commercial
- 7:34television stations Additionally the
- 7:37police also expressed skepticism due to
- 7:39Ricky's prior drug convictions it was
- 7:42confirmed that he had survived in the
- 7:43outback for a huge amount of time but
- 7:45how he got there is still up for debate
- 7:47it was also noted that Ricky's car was
- 7:49never found
- 7:50in 2010 Ricky released the book left for
- 7:54dead how I survived 71 days in the
- 7:56outback which details his experience
- 7:59I'd love to know what you think about
- 8:01this case because it is a crazy one and
