- 0:00In Saving Private Ryan, a squad of
- 0:03American soldiers is sent deep into
- 0:05enemy territory. Their mission, bring
- 0:08home one man, Private James Ryan,
- 0:12because all his brothers were killed in
- 0:13combat. But here's the ethical question.
- 0:17Is it right to sacrifice many to save
- 0:20just one person? Some say no, it's too
- 0:23great a cost. Others say yes, because
- 0:27life isn't maths. It's also about duty.
- 0:30One by one, the rescuers fall. Captain
- 0:34Miller, their leader, is mortally
- 0:36wounded. His last words to Ryan was two
- 0:40words. Earn this. Each men gave
- 0:44everything so one man could live. Not
- 0:47because he was special, but because the
- 0:50mission said he mattered.
- 0:53So, was it justified? Was the mission
- 0:56moral or madness?
- 0:58A utilitarian would say no, the mat
- 1:01doesn't work. But a deonttologist might
- 1:03say yes because some duties can't be
- 1:06measured.
