  2. 0:06welcome to the
  3. 0:08edge this is certifiably the greenest
  4. 0:11office building in the
  5. 0:13world but that just might be the least
  6. 0:16interesting part about it because the
  7. 0:18edge in Amsterdam is also possibly the
  8. 0:21most connected office space in the
  9. 0:23[Music]
  10. 0:26world working at the edge is insane it
  11. 0:29all starts with a smartphone app
  12. 0:31developed by the building's main tenant
  13. 0:33the consulting firm
  14. 0:34deoe when you arrive at the edge a
  15. 0:37camera recognizes you by your license
  16. 0:39plate for automatic access and because
  17. 0:41it's the Netherlands there are Chargers
  18. 0:43available for electric
  19. 0:45[Music]
  20. 0:47cars inside things start to get
  21. 0:50interesting because you don't have a
  22. 0:53desk no one here does workspaces are
  23. 0:56assigned to you based on your schedule
  24. 0:58for the day you have options a work
  25. 1:01Booth a meeting room what they call a
  26. 1:03concentration room a sitting desk a
  27. 1:05standing desk a balcony desk you can
  28. 1:08even just hang out in the sunfill atrium
  29. 1:10all
  30. 1:11day this concept is called hot desking
  31. 1:14and it's what allows deoe to have 2500
  32. 1:17workers but less than half as many desks
  33. 1:19at its Dutch
  34. 1:21headquarters the app knows your
  35. 1:23preferences and when you arrive at your
  36. 1:24workspace the lights dim or brighten
  37. 1:27based on your stored settings and any of
  38. 1:29the build building's massive flat
  39. 1:31screens can be instantly paired with an
  40. 1:33iPhone or a
  41. 1:37laptop so what makes all this
  42. 1:40possible the LED light panels developed
  43. 1:42by Phillips specifically for the edge
  44. 1:45are actually powered by low voltage
  45. 1:47ethernet cables which means every light
  46. 1:50in the building becomes its own internet
  47. 1:52connected data Hub with 288,000 sensors
  48. 1:55that makes the building and its users
  49. 1:58smarter the building becomes a very
  50. 2:00important part of who we are and what we
  51. 2:02want to be and we actually seen in
  52. 2:04recruitment that more people are now
  53. 2:06spontaneously coming to the Lo because
  54. 2:08they want to work in this
  55. 2:10building oh yeah and then there's these
  56. 2:13the building has solar on the roof and
  57. 2:15on the south facing wall enough to power
  58. 2:17the building and all of the electric
  59. 2:19cars computers and smartphones used by
  60. 2:22its
  61. 2:23employees and those employees are kept
  62. 2:25warm by two enormous bore holes
  63. 2:28tunneling more than 400 100 ft down
  64. 2:30beneath the building during the summer
  65. 2:33The Edge pumps warm water deep into the
  66. 2:35aquafer where it sits insulated until it
  67. 2:39can be sucked back out in the winter to
  68. 2:41warm the
  69. 2:42building outside there are beehive
  70. 2:44towers and bat homes to support the
  71. 2:46local pollinators and even the rain
  72. 2:49water is collected to flush the toilets
  73. 2:51and irrigate the
  74. 2:53gardens we uh are planning to build a
  75. 2:56lot more buildings like these and the
  76. 2:58next one will be smarter and the one
  77. 3:00after that will be smarter as well and
  78. 3:02we won't stop until all cities in the
  79. 3:04world are filled with buildings that are
  80. 3:06intelligent and that are not using any
  81. 3:08energy anymore in the end we will
  82. 3:10actually need less buildings in the
  83. 3:12world but the buildings that are there
  84. 3:13will be used in a better way will be
  85. 3:15more efficient and we'll be uh we'll be
  86. 3:17using a lot less energy than in the
  87. 3:20[Music]
  88. 3:22past sometimes the edge just feels like
  89. 3:25it's showing off and some of the app
  90. 3:27functionality isn't quite ready for
  91. 3:29prime time yet
  92. 3:30but most of the time this is all running
  93. 3:32seamlessly in the
  94. 3:34background it's maybe the most fully
  95. 3:36realized vision of The Internet of
  96. 3:38Things the world has ever
  97. 3:40seen it's a building that has
  98. 3:43sustainability as an important aspect of
  99. 3:45making a good place to work in Dutch
  100. 3:47there is even a word for this new kind
  101. 3:49of thinking about the workspace that new
  102. 3:52AA in a nutshell it means that um work
  103. 3:56space is more focused on the tasks that
  104. 3:59need to be done and the working
  105. 4:00community that it's part
  106. 4:03of another day at the edge comes to an
  107. 4:05end a Custom Security robot that looks a
  108. 4:08bit like R2-D2 wakes up and begins its
  109. 4:12patrols now if only the app could
  110. 4:14automatically come conjure up a nice
  111. 4:16dinner recipe maybe provide all the
  112. 4:18fresh ingredients at the end of the day
  113. 4:19to get you cooking no surprise The Edge
  114. 4:23has that too bone appetit
  115. 4:33[Music]
