- 0:00Peace be upon you and God's mercy and
- 0:01blessings. In the name of God, the Most
- 0:03Gracious, the Most Merciful.
- 0:05Welcome to the fourth lecture of the
- 0:06remote work course.
- 0:09Today we will discuss a very important
- 0:11and fundamental topic: the résumé and
- 0:13the portfolio.
- 0:15We will learn how to showcase our skills
- 0:17. And present ourselves to clients or
- 0:19companies in a professional manner. Let
- 0:21us begin with God’s blessing.
- 0:24Certainly, every person applying for a
- 0:26job, internship, or even a freelance
- 0:28opportunity needs to present themselves
- 0:30in a clear, professional way.
- 0:34This naturally requires defining one's
- 0:36qualifications and displaying work that
- 0:39helps the hiring party understand the
- 0:41applicant's capabilities.
- 0:44And this is where. We have two basic
- 0:45documents that complement each other.
- 0:48The résumé, which summarizes education,
- 0:51experience, and skills.
- 0:55And the portfolio, which displays
- 0:57selected examples of projects and the
- 0:58way they were developed.
- 1:01The content of each is chosen according
- 1:03to the nature of the opportunity and the
- 1:06requirements of the requesting party.
- 1:10By the end of this lecture, you will
- 1:11hopefully be able to: identify the
- 1:13sections of a résumé and write its
- 1:14content professionally.
- 1:17Select the appropriate work to build a
- 1:19specialized portfolio.
- 1:21Present the project in a way that
- 1:23clarifies the idea, development stages,
- 1:26outputs, and your personal role in that
- 1:28project.
- 1:30Review both the CV and portfolio, and
- 1:32prepare them for submission to a
- 1:34specific opportunity.
- 1:37Well, to begin with, let us learn about
- 1:39. The concept of the résumé and see its
- 1:42importance.
- 1:44The résumé is an organized document that
- 1:46summarizes the applicant's
- 1:48qualifications, experiences, skills, and
- 1:50achievements related to the targeted
- 1:52opportunity.
- 1:55Naturally, this helps the employer form
- 1:57an initial impression regarding how
- 2:00suitable this person is for this job or
- 2:02opportunity, and to make a decision
- 2:04regarding moving to the interview stage
- 2:07or another evaluation phase.
- 2:11Here, the effectiveness of the résumé
- 2:13depends on choosing the appropriate
- 2:15information and its clarity and accuracy
- 2:17.
- 2:19It is possible that the applicant,
- 2:21whether a professional or a student, has
- 2:24a good level of experience and skills.
- 2:27But they might not convey it, for
- 2:29example, by using wrong phrases or.
- 2:31Using general phrases, or perhaps they
- 2:33neglected to demonstrate or prove one of
- 2:35their skills.
- 2:37The use of the terms "résumé" and "CV"
- 2:39varies between countries. For instance,
- 2:42in North America, they often use the
- 2:44term "résumé" for a brief professional
- 2:47summary.
- 2:48However, the "academic CV" is more
- 2:51expansive, showing teaching, research,
- 2:53publications, and conferences.
- 2:56That one has participated in.
- 2:59But in other countries, "CV" is also
- 3:01used for a professional summary, as an
- 3:04umbrella term for both.
- 3:07That is why we always read the
- 3:08instructions of the entity clearly when
- 3:10applying.
- 3:11And it is very important to commit to
- 3:13what they are asking for.
- 3:16Well, to start, let us get to know the
- 3:17sections of a résumé.
- 3:20A résumé can be organized through these
- 3:22sections.
- 3:25Let us review them, and then we will
- 3:27explain them in detail and order: First
- 3:30, Name and Contact Details and
- 3:32Professional Links; Second, Professional
- 3:35Summary or Objective; Third, Education
- 3:38and Qualifications; Fourth, Professional
- 3:40Experience and Training; Fifth, Academic
- 3:43and Personal Projects; Sixth, Technical
- 3:46and Soft Skills; Seventh, Languages; and
- 3:49Eighth, Courses and Certificates.
- 3:52Ninth, Volunteering and Activities.
- 3:55Tenth, Awards and Honors. Eleventh,
- 3:59Hobbies and Interests. And finally,
- 4:02References.
- 4:04Of course, this is a list for selection
- 4:05and organization. It is not required
- 4:08that we use or include every section. We
- 4:10add the information that serves the
- 4:12opportunity. And we exclude the sections
- 4:14in which we have no experience or are
- 4:16not relevant.
- 4:17...appropriate for this opportunity, and
- 4:19you can certainly prioritize education
- 4:21or experience depending on the
- 4:23applicant's stage and the strength of
- 4:25the evidence they possess.
- 4:29Let's first look at the first section:
- 4:31Name, contact information, and
- 4:33professional links.
- 4:36The name is placed clearly at the top of
- 4:38the page, followed by necessary contact
- 4:41details: phone number, a professional
- 4:43email address, city or country if needed
- 4:46, a link to your portfolio, and an
- 4:48updated professional profile like
- 4:50LinkedIn.
- 4:53It is, of course, vital to verify the
- 4:55accuracy of the data and that the links
- 4:57work, avoiding personal details that do
- 4:59not serve the application.
- 5:03You may use a personal photo depending
- 5:05on the employer, but you don't have to
- 5:08include it if it's not requested,
- 5:10followed by a professional summary or
- 5:12professional objective.
- 5:15The summary is a short paragraph that
- 5:17clarifies the applicant's specialization
- 5:19and top skills relevant to the
- 5:21opportunity. As for the professional
- 5:23objective, it explains the type of
- 5:25opportunity the applicant is seeking.
- 5:27Well, for example, an interior design
- 5:29student.
- 5:30I use AutoCAD, for instance, to prepare
- 5:33executive drawings.
- 5:35And SketchUp for 3D modeling and
- 5:38rendering.
- 5:40For example, I completed an academic
- 5:42project, an apartment, a restaurant, or
- 5:44whatever projects you have worked on.
- 5:46And you continue: I am looking for an
- 5:48internship opportunity. Applying skills
- 5:50in furniture layout and preparing design
- 5:52presentations, for example.
- 5:55But naturally, you adjust the example
- 5:57here to match your own level.
- 6:00Or your actual level.
- 6:03Education and Qualifications. In the
- 6:06education and qualifications section, we
- 6:08mention the name of the degree and major
- 6:10.
- 6:11The educational institution and
- 6:13graduation date, or the expected
- 6:15graduation date if you are still
- 6:17studying.
- 6:18You may also add your grade point
- 6:20average.
- 6:21For example: Bachelor's in Interior
- 6:25Design, Al-Aqsa University, expected
- 6:28graduation 2027, like this. As for the
- 6:31experience section. Professional and
- 6:33internship.
- 6:34Here we list every experience and its
- 6:37title.
- 6:39The entity you interned with, and the
- 6:42period.
- 6:44Then, a brief description of the work.
- 6:46You have completed.
- 6:48It is preferred that you describe the
- 6:51task, the contribution, and the result
- 6:53or output you achieved.
- 6:56So, what is the difference between a
- 6:57general description and a clearer one? A
- 6:59general description might be: "
- 7:00Internship at a design firm."
- 7:03But when we describe it more clearly and
- 7:06accurately, we say: "Prepared
- 7:08adjustments to executive drawings for
- 7:10furniture layout using AutoCAD, for
- 7:13example."
- 7:14"And prepared 3D models to present
- 7:16alternatives, for example."
- 7:19And you write: "Under the supervision of
- 7:20the lead designer."
- 7:23Regarding academic and personal projects
- 7:25: this is designated for students who do
- 7:28not have prior real-world work.
- 7:30Here, one includes their academic work
- 7:32and projects, or those executed
- 7:34independently for training purposes. It
- 7:37is very important to clarify the type of
- 7:39project, your role, and your
- 7:41contribution to it.
- 7:43Any project where there is no proven
- 7:45evidence of your skill is not
- 7:47recommended to be included.
- 7:50Let's look at the educational example we
- 7:52have.
- 7:53This is, for example, a living room
- 7:54design, an academic project.
- 7:57I developed the furniture layout and
- 7:58created a model using, for example,
- 8:00SketchUp. And I prepared the snapshots
- 8:02and a presentation to clarify materials
- 8:05, lighting, and so on from this
- 8:06description.
- 8:08Naturally, in group projects, the
- 8:09student specifies the part they
- 8:11completed themselves.
- 8:14Technical and soft skills.
- 8:16In the technical and soft skills section
- 8:18, you choose the skills appropriate for
- 8:20the opportunity.
- 8:22It is preferred to clarify the task the
- 8:24student is capable of executing.
- 8:27For example: "I possess the skill to use
- 8:29AutoCAD to prepare executive drawings."
- 8:33"And SketchUp to model spaces and
- 8:35furniture."
- 8:37"And Enscape to prepare materials,
- 8:39lighting, and final rendering."
- 8:42As for communication and teamwork skills
- 8:44, they are clearer when demonstrated
- 8:45through a description of your experience
- 8:47.
- 8:48Such as presenting an idea to a group,
- 8:50or coordinating tasks within a joint
- 8:52project.
- 8:54Regarding the languages section, you
- 8:56must state the language and your level
- 8:57of proficiency realistically.
- 9:00If you have an accredited test, such as
- 9:02TOEFL, IELTS, or other certified exams,
- 9:04you can list it along with your score.
- 9:08Of course, it is very important that it
- 9:10reflects your true and actual ability in
- 9:13reading, writing, and speaking required
- 9:15for the job.
- 9:20As for courses and certifications, in
- 9:22this section, you mention the course
- 9:24name, the provider, and the date.
- 9:26It is, of course, very important that
- 9:27the course is relevant to the
- 9:28opportunity. Keep in mind that attending
- 9:31a course does not, by itself, prove the
- 9:33skill. That is why you must support it.
- 9:35With the applications you completed
- 9:37while, for example, a student.
- 9:40As for the volunteering and activities
- 9:42section, you can include volunteer
- 9:44experience if it demonstrates a relevant
- 9:46skill.
- 9:47While specifying your role and the work
- 9:50you accomplished.
- 9:53Awards.
- 9:55Regarding awards and honors, mention
- 9:57awards relevant to the specialization.
- 10:00Along with the name of the award, the
- 10:01awarding body, and the year, of course.
- 10:03You must distinguish between winning an
- 10:05award and participating in a competition
- 10:08or activity.
- 10:10As for hobbies and interests, this
- 10:12section is added when it provides
- 10:14important and useful information.
- 10:18Finally, references: references are
- 10:20people who can provide a recommendation
- 10:23or confirm the applicant's experience.
- 10:26It is usually not necessary to include
- 10:28their details in a brief professional
- 10:30resume unless requested.
- 10:32When needed, you must obtain their
- 10:34consent before sharing their data.
- 10:38Now, let's move on to the portfolio or
- 10:41work dossier.
- 10:43After covering the writing of
- 10:45qualifications and skills in the resume
- 10:47, we certainly need to move on to show
- 10:49what proves them.
- 10:53For instance, if a student states they
- 10:55can prepare plans, develop furniture, or
- 10:58even model, the portfolio allows the
- 11:01recipient to see this ability and
- 11:03evaluate it practically and clearly.
- 11:10Let’s learn about the concept of a
- 11:12portfolio and its importance.
- 11:15A portfolio is a selected and organized
- 11:17collection of works that demonstrate
- 11:19your abilities as a designer, your
- 11:21interests, and your method of developing
- 11:24ideas.
- 11:25It can combine, for example, sketches,
- 11:28plans, experiments, and final outputs.
- 11:31Of course, with brief explanations that
- 11:35clarify and help to understand this
- 11:38project.
- 11:41Let’s now learn about the sections of a
- 11:43portfolio.
- 11:45First: The cover and visual identity.
- 11:49Second: A brief introduction to the
- 11:51designer.
- 11:52Third: The index and navigation
- 11:54organization.
- 11:56Fourth: Selected projects.
- 11:59Fifth: Skills supported by work.
- 12:02Sixth: Supporting works, and this can be
- 12:05an optional point.
- 12:07Seventh: The resume and linking it to
- 12:10the portfolio, according to the
- 12:11requirements of the job you are applying
- 12:14for.
- 12:15Finally: Communication and professional
- 12:17links, of course.
- 12:19We can merge some sections in short
- 12:22files, and...On websites, they can
- 12:24appear as pages or menus, while keeping
- 12:27access to the introduction, works, and
- 12:30contact info clear.
- 12:34First, let's start with the cover,
- 12:36introduction, and index. In the first
- 12:38section: The cover and visual identity.
- 12:41The cover introduces the file owner and
- 12:43their field. It can include the name,
- 12:45specialization, and an image selected
- 12:48from one of the works. It is very
- 12:50important that it is a strong and
- 12:51attractive image.
- 12:52Because it gives the first impression of
- 12:54your ability as a designer.
- 12:58The fonts, colors, and method of writing
- 13:00headings remain consistent throughout
- 13:03all pages.
- 13:06Two: The brief introduction to the
- 13:08designer; here, you explain your
- 13:10specialization, academic level,
- 13:12professional interests, and work method
- 13:14briefly, choosing information that helps
- 13:16the reader understand the works they
- 13:18will see.
- 13:20Let's look at this example. An interior
- 13:22design student.
- 13:24Interested in residential space design.
- 13:28And furniture design.
- 13:30This file includes academic projects.
- 13:33That illustrate my work in developing
- 13:35ideas. And space planning.
- 13:38And my ability for professional modeling
- 13:40, for instance. Et cetera.
- 13:43Third: The index and navigation
- 13:45organization.
- 13:47This helps in accessing the projects.
- 13:50Especially when the file is large, using
- 13:53.
- 13:54Clear names and correct numbers; you can
- 13:56also add internal links in the digital
- 13:59version.
- 14:02Selected projects are the main section
- 14:04of the portfolio, and you choose each
- 14:07project based on its strength and
- 14:09relevance to the opportunity you are
- 14:12applying for, while highlighting your
- 14:14personal contribution to the project.
- 14:19Of course, as we mentioned, you can use
- 14:22work you completed during your studies
- 14:24or personal work done for training,
- 14:27while clarifying and explaining its type
- 14:29.
- 14:31Now, let's start by identifying what a
- 14:34project card is: it includes the title,
- 14:37type, year, your role in the project,
- 14:40the tools or programs used, and perhaps
- 14:43the project area if it’s useful
- 14:45information.
- 14:47As an example, it could be presented
- 14:50this way: reception area for a design
- 14:52office.
- 14:53Academic study project, for example,
- 14:562026, and my role was developing
- 14:59furniture layout. And modeling the
- 15:02reception counter, for example.
- 15:10Let's look at the concept and
- 15:11development stages section. Development
- 15:13and plans in the concept and stages
- 15:15section. You present selected materials
- 15:18. That show how the idea evolved. For
- 15:21example, you could show a sketch, an
- 15:23analytical diagram, or a comparison
- 15:25between two results.
- 15:27Or two alternatives, and you can write a
- 15:30short caption explaining the reason for
- 15:32the change.
- 15:34Showing this process helps in
- 15:36understanding your thinking ability and
- 15:38how you arrived at the final result.
- 15:42As for the section regarding technical
- 15:44plans and drawings, you choose the
- 15:47drawings that explain the solution; for
- 15:49example, display the furniture layout
- 15:51plan, sections, elevations, or
- 15:53appropriate details.
- 15:56Naturally, you must review the titles,
- 15:59labels, dimensions, and line clarity so
- 16:01it is clearly readable.
- 16:06Part of the project presentation
- 16:07components is the section for materials
- 16:09, colors, and furniture.
- 16:11Here, you showcase the choices related
- 16:13to the space and where you used them.
- 16:16You can even link material samples to
- 16:18numbers on the perspective or plan with
- 16:20a brief description of the reason for
- 16:22the selection.
- 16:23As for the final rendering or execution
- 16:25photos. You choose shots that explain
- 16:28different aspects of the project. Like a
- 16:30general shot.
- 16:32And another shot showing important
- 16:34details.
- 16:35Or a point you want to highlight to
- 16:37strengthen your concept.
- 16:40Alright, we reach the final item in the
- 16:42project presentation components. Result
- 16:43and brief evaluation. In this section,
- 16:46you mention what you accomplished. And
- 16:48how it relates to what was required. And
- 16:51you provide an idea of what you learned
- 16:53.
- 16:54And the points that need work to be
- 16:56developed.
- 16:58I emphasize once again. That the
- 17:00components we mentioned are points and a
- 17:02framework for selection.
- 17:05You do not need all these types of
- 17:07boards for every project.
- 17:10Or the same number of pages. It depends
- 17:12on each project. And on the requirements
- 17:15for this project. And on the opportunity
- 17:17you are applying for.
- 17:20Okay, the fifth section of the portfolio
- 17:23sections: skills supported by work.
- 17:26Here you point out the skills while
- 17:28directing the reader or recipient to the
- 17:30evidence, for example.
- 17:34Of course, we can dispense with this
- 17:36list being separate if the skills are
- 17:38sufficiently clear during the project
- 17:40presentation.
- 17:43As for the supporting works section, it
- 17:45includes drawing, photography, furniture
- 17:48design, and model making when it adds a
- 17:50different capability and supports
- 17:52professional orientation.
- 17:56Here, we select specific works, define
- 17:58them, and avoid adding materials that do
- 18:00not serve the student's image as a
- 18:02designer.
- 18:06The seventh section, the resume or
- 18:07linking it to the portfolio.
- 18:11Here, you attach the resume or provide a
- 18:13link according to the organization's
- 18:15requirements if they allow it.
- 18:19Review the consistency of names, titles
- 18:21, and dates between both documents
- 18:23without repeating the entire resume
- 18:25content in multiple places.
- 18:28As for the contact section and
- 18:30professional links, include at least one
- 18:33clear method of contact and links that
- 18:36lead directly to the intended content.
- 18:39Of course, you can use a QR code for
- 18:42printed copies, alongside a written link
- 18:45.
- 18:46It is very important to test this link,
- 18:48its accessibility, and its validity
- 18:50before including it in the file.
- 18:54Okay, thirdly, selecting content and
- 18:56preparing the submission file.
- 18:59Here, you tailor the CV and portfolio
- 19:02for a specific opportunity. The first
- 19:05thing I start with is reading the
- 19:07advertisement. I identify the required
- 19:10skills and deliverables.
- 19:12Then, I select the information and works
- 19:15that you are capable of proving and have
- 19:17available.
- 19:19Of course, the version suitable for an
- 19:21initial application may differ from the
- 19:23detailed materials you might present
- 19:25during the interview.
- 19:28In other words, you are providing an
- 19:30initial idea of your capabilities and
- 19:32skills.
- 19:34For example, if you want to apply for an
- 19:37internship in, say, drafting plans or
- 19:40executive drawing. You work on
- 19:42highlighting your experience in
- 19:44preparing plans in your resume.
- 19:47And you link the presentation of these
- 19:49plans in the portfolio with appropriate
- 19:52sheets and details.
- 19:54And when applying for a modeling service
- 19:55, for example.
- 19:57You prioritize the works you showcase
- 19:59and present to prove your ability and
- 20:02skill in this specific area.
- 20:07Formatting and presentation quality, to
- 20:09ensure the submission file comes out
- 20:11professionally.
- 20:13And reflects the initial impression of
- 20:15you as a designer or...You must adhere
- 20:17to the following formatting aspects.
- 20:20Adopting readable fonts, headings, and
- 20:22consistent alignment.
- 20:25Using white space to organize content,
- 20:28writing short and specific descriptions
- 20:31, reviewing images and plans at the
- 20:33expected display size, and avoiding
- 20:36duplicate images that add no information
- 20:39or, for example, show a weakness in your
- 20:41abilities. I do not show or use them.
- 20:46Okay, the length and formatting of the
- 20:48file. And let's see how its electronic
- 20:50screening works.
- 20:51Initially, a single page might be
- 20:53suitable for a student or fresh
- 20:56graduate's resume, but the portfolio
- 20:59length may be determined according to
- 21:01the works, purposes, and instructions of
- 21:04the requesting entity.
- 21:07And you follow the specific requirements
- 21:09for formatting, size, and page count.
- 21:12It is very important to pay attention to
- 21:14the electronic screening of the resume,
- 21:16or ATS.
- 21:18Currently, most organizations use it.
- 21:22Applicant tracking systems, in order to
- 21:24organize applications.
- 21:27They include searching and sorting
- 21:28according to specific criteria.
- 21:31That is why it is preferred to use
- 21:33familiar headings and text.
- 21:35And selectable text.
- 21:38And avoid placing basic information
- 21:40inside images or within complex elements
- 21:43that are hard to read.
- 21:46That is why it is very important to use
- 21:48the terminology.
- 21:50Found in the advertisement. When
- 21:52describing your actual skills. While
- 21:54adhering to the required file type.
- 21:57Keeping in mind that there is no
- 21:59specific format that guarantees
- 22:01acceptance in all systems.
- 22:04Let's look at this very important point
- 22:07. Honesty in presenting work.
- 22:09One of the most important professional
- 22:12principles in preparing a sound file is
- 22:14honesty in presenting work. Of course,
- 22:16through these points: First, clarifying
- 22:19the project type. And the student's role
- 22:22in this group work.
- 22:24Distinguishing between a proposal and
- 22:26executed work.
- 22:28Attributing reference materials to their
- 22:30sources.
- 22:32And writing down the skills and results
- 22:34you can explain. And proving your
- 22:37ability to possess them.
- 22:40Okay, let's look at this example to
- 22:42explain how we can link the CV to the
- 22:44portfolio.
- 22:46For example, if you applied for an
- 22:48internship that requires preparing floor
- 22:51plans and 3D models, and you have an
- 22:53academic project for a living room, how
- 22:56do you link your CV and portfolio?
- 23:01In your CV, you write a brief
- 23:03description: developed furniture layout
- 23:06for a living room as part of an academic
- 23:09project, modeled using SketchUp, and
- 23:12rendered with Enscape; you then link
- 23:14this to your portfolio.
- 23:17By presenting the evidence that supports
- 23:20this description. Project card and your
- 23:22role in it.
- 23:24A sketch or an alternative that
- 23:26illustrates it. Development stages.
- 23:29Show the furniture layout plan and
- 23:30circulation paths.
- 23:32Then, material selection. And finally,
- 23:35the final renders.
- 23:38Let’s look at this proposal for
- 23:40organizing the pages in your portfolio.
- 23:42First, the first page is the cover. The
- 23:45second page is a brief introduction and
- 23:48index. Pages three to five, for example
- 23:51, present a project, let's say
- 23:52residential.
- 23:54Pages six to eight. I could present a
- 23:57reception area. Or a hotel project. Or
- 23:59perhaps another project. From page 9 to
- 24:0311, present a furniture project. Or
- 24:06various works that support. The skills
- 24:09that I possess.
- 24:11Page 12: contact information and links.
- 24:13And a link to your CV, of course, when
- 24:16required.
- 24:20Well, in the end, God willing.
- 24:22I will attach templates and links to CV
- 24:25and portfolio examples for you.
- 24:31So, in the end, you will be required to
- 24:34prepare a CV in the same way we
- 24:36explained.
- 24:38And a portfolio that presents your
- 24:40existing work in the same way and style
- 24:42we explained.
- 24:44And with that, we have reached the end
- 24:46of our lecture. Thank you all, and may
- 24:48God bless you. Peace be upon you and
- 24:49God's mercy and blessings.
