- 0:00So Tom Parker BS is sitting in his Range
- 0:02Rover at the private west gate at
- 0:04Windsor Castle with his engine off and
- 0:06his arms folded, refusing to move
- 0:09because Prince William had his pass
- 0:10canled 4 hours earlier and nobody
- 0:13thought to tell him. That's the story.
- 0:16Not the whole story obviously, but
- 0:18that's the image. a grown man standing
- 0:21in the cold in front of his own
- 0:22headlights blocking a road used by the
- 0:24royal family because he found out from a
- 0:27red light that his 20 years of driving
- 0:29straight through had just ended. And the
- 0:31part that actually matters, the part
- 0:33that makes this worth talking about
- 0:35isn't the gate at all. It's what was
- 0:38sitting in a black folder in the king's
- 0:39study later that night. 15 pages that
- 0:42had been emailed to three luxury brands
- 0:44in three different countries. And page
- 0:4712 of that document is where the whole
- 0:49thing falls apart. I'm going to walk you
- 0:51through this hour by hour because when
- 0:53you lay it all out, the timeline gets
- 0:55genuinely strange. Like if you just
- 0:57heard the gate story, you'd think
- 0:58William was being petty. But when you
- 1:00see what was in that folder, you
- 1:02understand why he didn't warn anyone,
- 1:05why he signed the order himself at 4:22
- 1:07in the afternoon and then went to dinner
- 1:09and talked about the weather. Let's go
- 1:11back 72 hours. St. James's Palace. The
- 1:14evening of October 17th, there's a
- 1:17reception for patrons of the arts, which
- 1:19means a room full of wealthy people who
- 1:21fund galleries and orchestras standing
- 1:24around with glasses of wine talking
- 1:26about restoration funds. Tom Parker BS
- 1:28is working the room the way he always
- 1:30does. And honestly, he does belong at
- 1:32these things. He's the queen's son. He's
- 1:34the king's godson. [music] He writes
- 1:36about food for a living. He's been in
- 1:38and out of royal houses for two decades.
- 1:40The security staff know his face, but
- 1:43within half an hour, Tom has steered
- 1:46three guests away from the main crowd
- 1:48and into a corner of the picture
- 1:50gallery. These three people aren't arts
- 1:52patrons. According to people who are
- 1:54there, they're senior executives from
- 1:57foreign luxury houses, the kind of
- 1:59companies that sell watches and handbags
- 2:01and perfume that cost more than a weekly
- 2:04shop. And they didn't come for the
- 2:05restoration fund. They came looking for
- 2:07access. Prince William is uh across the
- 2:10room talking to an ambassador, nodding
- 2:13politely, holding a glass of water, but
- 2:15he's watching the gallery over the
- 2:17ambassador's shoulder. He sees Tom tilt
- 2:19his head toward the corner. He sees the
- 2:21three executives follow. And the staff
- 2:24member who passed close enough to catch
- 2:25pieces of the conversation said Tom
- 2:28never mentioned the donation. He talked
- 2:30about access. He talked about rooms the
- 2:32public never gets to see. about how a
- 2:35photograph taken inside a family home
- 2:37reads completely differently from a
- 2:39photograph at a charity dinner. He
- 2:41mentioned the king by his first name. He
- 2:43mentioned his mother more than once.
- 2:46William didn't go over. And that's the
- 2:48detail that tells you everything about
- 2:49how he operates. Most people would have
- 2:52walked across the room and made a point.
- 2:54He didn't want a scene in front of
- 2:56foreign guests and he didn't want to
- 2:58give Tom an audience to perform for. He
- 3:00finished his conversation, shook the
- 3:02hands he came to shake, smiled at the
- 3:04door, and left on schedule. People
- 3:06who've worked around William for years
- 3:08will tell you that's the version of him
- 3:09to worry about. The loud William you can
- 3:12talk around. The quiet one goes home and
- 3:15asks for paperwork. So the next morning,
- 3:17October 18th, William asked the estate
- 3:20office at Windsor for the private entry
- 3:22logs and security reports for the past
- 3:24month. He didn't name Tom. He didn't
- 3:27call a meeting. He asked for it the way
- 3:29you'd ask for a routine check and the
- 3:31office treated it like one, which is why
- 3:34nobody thought to warn anybody. Now,
- 3:36some context here because it matters.
- 3:38The king had handed William oversight of
- 3:41security at the private residences
- 3:43around Windsor sometime after the family
- 3:46moved to Forest Lodge. That move is on
- 3:48the record. William, Katherine, and the
- 3:50children left Adelaide Cottage for
- 3:52Forest Lodge in Windsor Great Park in
- 3:54October 2025 on a 20-year lease. They
- 3:58live a few minutes from the castle.
- 3:59Their children walk those corridors. If
- 4:02anyone in that family has a reason to
- 4:04read a gate log, line by line, it's the
- 4:06father whose kids live on the other side
- 4:09of the gate. And this estate has had its
- 4:11scares. In October 2024, two masked men
- 4:15climbed a fence on the Windsor estate in
- 4:17the middle of the night and drove off
- 4:19with a pickup truck and a quad bike from
- 4:21a farm less than a mile from where
- 4:23William and Catherine were living with
- 4:24the children. Nobody got hurt, but a
- 4:26father reads a story like that once and
- 4:29never quite stops thinking about it. So,
- 4:31William sits down with the logs, and the
- 4:33logs have their own story to tell. In
- 4:36one month, Tom's Range Rover had come
- 4:38through the Westgate 11 times. That's
- 4:40more often than some members of the
- 4:42family. And on not one of those visits
- 4:44had anybody looked in the boot. Then the
- 4:47estate team turned up a report nobody
- 4:49had flagged. A member of the kitchen
- 4:51staff had written it a fortnight
- 4:53earlier. It described a stranger
- 4:55carrying professional camera equipment
- 4:57into the family's private kitchen and it
- 4:59named the man who brought him in. Tom
- 5:02Parker BS. Across the top someone had
- 5:04stamped one word, resolved. underneath.
- 5:08Nothing, no note of how or by whom or
- 5:10what anybody did about it. A complaint
- 5:13that's serious closed with a rubber
- 5:15stamp and not a single line of
- 5:16explanation. Let me take you back to
- 5:18that kitchen because this is where it
- 5:20all started. Early October, Tom drives
- 5:23up to the side entrance with a man in
- 5:25the passenger seat and several big
- 5:28padded bags across the back. At the
- 5:30checkpoint, he tells the guards it's a
- 5:32friend. They're going to cook a few
- 5:34things together. Nothing formal. The
- 5:36guards know Tom. They wave the car
- 5:38through without opening a single bag.
- 5:40And that's the part that stays with me
- 5:42because it's the most human thing in the
- 5:44whole story. Those guards had seen him a
- 5:47thousand times. Familiarity did their
- 5:49checking for them. And familiarity never
- 5:52checks anything. The friend never picked
- 5:53up a pan. He walked into the private
- 5:56kitchen, the one the family uses, set up
- 5:58a tripod, fixed a big lens onto the
- 6:01front of a camera, and started shooting.
- 6:03He went in close on details. the copper
- 6:06pans hanging in rows, plates with the
- 6:08royal cipher on the rim, the doorway
- 6:11through to the private rooms beyond. The
- 6:13chef on duty crossed the floor and asked
- 6:15him to stop, then asked to see a
- 6:17commercial filming permit. Tom stepped
- 6:19in between them and explained that these
- 6:21were reference pictures for a cookbook,
- 6:24a private visit. Nobody was making any
- 6:27money. Now, the cookbook line was clever
- 6:30because people would believe it. Tom
- 6:32does write about royal food. In 2024, he
- 6:35published a book called Cooking and the
- 6:36Crown: Royal Recipes Going Back to Queen
- 6:39Victoria, and the papers reviewed it
- 6:41everywhere. The excuse had a real shape
- 6:44to it. The shape is something he'd done
- 6:46before, but the kitchen didn't buy it.
- 6:48Under the household rules, anyone
- 6:51bringing professional cameras into the
- 6:53private quarters needs written
- 6:55permission from the king's private
- 6:56secretary's office. The photographer had
- 6:59nothing in writing. Security walked him
- 7:01and his bags out of the castle that same
- 7:04afternoon and Tom drove him home. The
- 7:06head chef sat down that night and wrote
- 7:09it up properly. An unauthorized person,
- 7:12professional equipment, a secure area,
- 7:14and the name of the family friend who'
- 7:16brought him in. He addressed it to
- 7:17senior management so they could pass it
- 7:19to the king. Somewhere in that chain,
- 7:22somebody dropped it in the wrong tray
- 7:24and the report landed in the queen's
- 7:25office instead. A junior aid there
- 7:28opened it. A young man keen a year or so
- 7:30into the job, he read a complaint about
- 7:32the queen's son and decided on his own
- 7:35that the kindest thing for everybody was
- 7:37to make it go away. He stamped it
- 7:39resolved and filed it in the cabinet.
- 7:41Nobody sent the gate any new
- 7:43instructions. The king never saw it, and
- 7:45by every account I've come across, the
- 7:47queen never saw it either. Her office
- 7:50buried it under her name, and she had no
- 7:52idea it existed. That matters later in
- 7:55the study. Camila's office hid the
- 7:57report. Camila herself only learned
- 7:59about it when somebody laid it on a desk
- 8:01in front of her. One thing saved that
- 8:03report from the cabinet. The
- 8:05surveillance system at Windsor keeps its
- 8:07own copy of every reported breach
- 8:10separate from any office in the
- 8:12household. Under rules that came in
- 8:13during 2021, no household office can
- 8:16reach that copy or delete it. It comes
- 8:18out only when the most senior level asks
- 8:20for a review. On the morning of the
- 8:2218th, William asked, "And while we're on
- 8:25dates, I want you to tuck one away for
- 8:27later." The 16th of October. It means
- 8:29nothing yet. In about 20 minutes, it'll
- 8:31mean a great deal. So now, William is
- 8:34sitting at a desk at Forest Lodge with
- 8:36two pieces of paper side by side. The
- 8:38note about the gallery at St. James's
- 8:40[music] and the complaint from the
- 8:42kitchen. You need to understand what
- 8:44that kitchen means to that family. The
- 8:46kitchen and the back corridors at
- 8:48Windsor are the places the family moves
- 8:51about without protection officers at
- 8:52their elbow. It's the way a 13-year-old
- 8:55boy cuts through to get to the garden.
- 8:57It's where an 11-year-old girl and her
- 8:598-year-old brother race past the staff
- 9:01on a wet Saturday afternoon. George,
- 9:04Charlotte, and Lewis [music] have more
- 9:06privacy in those carters than anywhere
- 9:08outside their own front door. And
- 9:09William and Catherine have built their
- 9:11whole family life around keeping it that
- 9:13way. A few photographs of those rooms
- 9:15sold into the right glossy campaign and
- 9:17that privacy is gone. You can't buy it
- 9:20back afterward at any price. And William
- 9:22has a very long memory when it comes to
- 9:24cameras. September 1997, a 15year-old
- 9:28boy in a dark suit, head down, walking
- 9:31behind Diana's coffin with every lens in
- 9:33the world on him. He has never said much
- 9:35about that walk, but he said a great
- 9:37deal about what came before it. In May
- 9:392021, after Lord Dyson's report into how
- 9:42the BBC obtained the Panorama interview,
- 9:45Williams said publicly that the deceit
- 9:48had contributed to his mother's fear,
- 9:50paranoia, and isolation. Those were his
- 9:53words, and he chose every one of them.
- 9:55He's gone to court over it, too. In
- 9:57September 2017, a French court found
- 10:00against Closer magazine for publishing
- 10:02photographs of Katherine taken on a
- 10:04private holiday. William and Catherine
- 10:06won damages. That's real and it's on the
- 10:08record. So, put those two papers next to
- 10:11each other and a man like that sees a
- 10:13sequence. First, somebody photographs
- 10:15the private rooms. A few days later,
- 10:18somebody pitches the private rooms to
- 10:20three companies in the corner of a
- 10:21gallery. Those kitchen pictures start to
- 10:24look an awful lot like samples. And this
- 10:26wasn't the first warning either. Months
- 10:28earlier, sources say William had already
- 10:30said his piece. It happened at Forest
- 10:32Lodge over a weekend lunch. William
- 10:35looked at Tom across the table and told
- 10:37him more or less that the family would
- 10:39always be glad to see him and that
- 10:41contracts, invoices, and anything with a
- 10:44price on it stayed outside the gate. He
- 10:46made no threat. He drew a line out loud
- 10:48once. People who know William say that's
- 10:51his way. One warning plainly said, and
- 10:54after that he stops talking. Now, one of
- 10:56the questions that comes up a lot is why
- 10:59Tom Parker BS keeps turning up in these
- 11:01stories with no title at all. It's a
- 11:04fair question, and the answer is short.
- 11:07Tom and his sister, Laura Lopez, have no
- 11:09royal titles. Their mother married the
- 11:12then Prince of Wales in April 2005, and
- 11:15neither of her children took a title
- 11:17from it. Williams aunt, Princess Anne,
- 11:19went further with her own, to Peter and
- 11:21Zara, and turned titles down for them
- 11:24altogether. They grew up earning their
- 11:26own livingings. Tom is family by love
- 11:28and by marriage. But at a security gate,
- 11:31on paper, he's a private citizen with a
- 11:33famous mother. And that turns into the
- 11:35hinge of the whole argument later. Now,
- 11:38let's get to the night itself. October
- 11:4020th, early afternoon, William sat down
- 11:43and wrote the order. He knew how it
- 11:46would go if he raised it over a family
- 11:47dinner. His stepmother would defend her
- 11:50son. His father would want everybody to
- 11:52get along and the whole thing would melt
- 11:54into a conversation and come out the
- 11:56other side as nothing. A written order
- 11:59with a signature on it doesn't melt. At
- 12:014:22, the directive reached the guard
- 12:04house at the Westgate. A single page, it
- 12:07instructed the guards to end Tom Parker
- 12:10BS's access to the private gate and the
- 12:12priority lane with immediate effect.
- 12:15From that minute, he'd be a standard
- 12:16visitor, screened on every visit like
- 12:19anybody else. The guards on duty had no
- 12:21discretion to make an exception. And
- 12:23anybody with a question was to ring
- 12:25Williams office and leave the hut alone.
- 12:27He signed it himself. He did that on
- 12:29purpose. If there was going to be
- 12:30pressure that night, and he knew there
- 12:32would be, he wanted it landing on him,
- 12:35not on a 24year-old in a guard house.
- 12:37The guards were following his order.
- 12:39That was their whole defense. And he
- 12:41handed it to them in writing with his
- 12:43name at the bottom. Then he did nothing
- 12:45at all. He didn't ring Tom. He didn't
- 12:48warn the queen. He didn't mention it to
- 12:49his father. That evening, he went up to
- 12:52dinner at Windsor and talked about the
- 12:53children and the weather and the autumn
- 12:55diary. Meanwhile, a Range Rover was
- 12:58heading west along the M4 out of London
- 13:01with the radio on and the driver
- 13:02thinking about dinner. At 8:14 that
- 13:05evening, Tom's Range Rover pulled up to
- 13:07the Westgate. The light stayed red. The
- 13:09scanner didn't recognize him. The system
- 13:12had him down as an ordinary visitor. The
- 13:14guard who came out of the hut was young,
- 13:1624 or so, with a printed sheet in his
- 13:18hand. [music] He bent down to the
- 13:20driver's window, said good evening, and
- 13:23told Tom that his pass no longer worked
- 13:25on this gate. If he reversed and went
- 13:28round to the screening lane, 140 m back
- 13:31down the hill, the team there would
- 13:33check him through in a few minutes, and
- 13:35he'd be sitting down to dinner by half
- 13:37past. Tom told him the scanner was
- 13:40broken. He told him the system had made
- 13:42a mistake. Then he told him who he was,
- 13:44which the guard knew perfectly well, and
- 13:46said he'd been using this entrance for
- 13:4820 years since before half the people in
- 13:51that hut had their jobs and that
- 13:54somebody should lift the barrier now and
- 13:56sort the paperwork out in the morning.
- 13:58The guard said the order was in writing.
- 14:00He said he had no authority to lift
- 14:02anything. And he said it politely twice.
- 14:04Tom turned the engine off. He pulled the
- 14:07handbrake, climbed out, and planted
- 14:09himself in front of his own bonnet with
- 14:11his arms folded in a thin jacket in the
- 14:13cold. He announced that he wasn't moving
- 14:15until somebody with real authority came
- 14:18down to the gate. The guard stayed in a
- 14:19line by the hut. Nobody touched him.
- 14:22Nobody argued with him. His own
- 14:24headlights lit him from behind like a
- 14:26man standing on a stage and the wind
- 14:28came up off the park and went straight
- 14:30through that jacket. It took 4 minutes
- 14:32for the next set of headlights to
- 14:33appear. The convoy carrying Prince
- 14:36Edward and Sophie, the Duchess of
- 14:38Edinburgh, came round the bend for a
- 14:40family dinner and break hard on the
- 14:42slope. Right behind it came the Duke of
- 14:44Kent's car. Protection officers were out
- 14:46of their seats before the wheels stopped
- 14:49and they made a ring around the vehicles
- 14:51because the rules don't allow a car
- 14:53carrying a member of the family to
- 14:55reverse down a hill in the dark or swing
- 14:57off onto a road nobody has checked. They
- 14:59couldn't go back. They couldn't go
- 15:01forward. They sat there with their
- 15:02engines running and watched the Queen's
- 15:04son stand in the road with his arms
- 15:06crossed. In the back of a car going
- 15:08nowhere, Sophie picked up the internal
- 15:10phone and rang the security commander
- 15:12herself. Sources say she was furious,
- 15:15[music] and you can understand it. She
- 15:17and Prince Edward had come for a family
- 15:19dinner and found themselves parked in
- 15:21the dark on a slope with officers
- 15:24standing around their car and a ring
- 15:26because one man had decided to make a
- 15:28point with his car. Behind them, the
- 15:30Duke of Kent sat in the second car, a
- 15:32man in his 90s who has been coming to
- 15:34family dinners at Windsor since before
- 15:36Tom was born, waiting in the cold on the
- 15:39hill over a gate pass. At 8:26, the
- 15:42system logged it as a serious security
- 15:44incident with members of the line of
- 15:46succession held up at a gate. That
- 15:48category is automatic. No human being
- 15:51picked it to embarrass Tom. The system
- 15:53printed a report and a member of staff
- 15:56carried it upstairs and laid it on the
- 15:58king's desk with Tom's name in the box
- 16:00marked responsible party. Down at the
- 16:02gate, Tom took his phone out. He rang
- 16:04his mother. According to people close to
- 16:06the situation, he told her Prince
- 16:08William was humiliating him in front of
- 16:11the gate staff on purpose and that she
- 16:13had to do something. And I want you to
- 16:15try to hear that call from Camila's end
- 16:16of the line because she isn't a cartoon
- 16:19in the story. Camila knows about
- 16:21photographers better than almost anybody
- 16:23alive. In the '9s, she couldn't step out
- 16:26of her own front door in wheelchair
- 16:28without long lenses in the hedge. She
- 16:30knows what it is to stand at the edge of
- 16:32this family as the outsider marked
- 16:34written off. Tom is her eldest. He grew
- 16:37up as the boy with the famous mother and
- 16:40no title. The one the papers called the
- 16:42stepson. The one who got photographed at
- 16:44parties and written up as a hanger on.
- 16:46He rings her and says they're
- 16:48humiliating him and she hears the old
- 16:50story in it. She hears them doing to her
- 16:52son what they once did to her. Of
- 16:54course, she picks up the phone. She rang
- 16:57the household's chief of staff and told
- 16:58him she wanted Williams directive
- 17:01cancelled before the morning. By then,
- 17:03the incident report was already lying on
- 17:05her husband's desk with her son's name
- 17:07in it. The officers never had to tow
- 17:09anything. Tom got back in, started the
- 17:12engine, and reversed down the lane to
- 17:14the visitor car parked below, [music]
- 17:16past the convoy, past the faces in the
- 17:18back windows, past the young guard who
- 17:20had told him no twice. Then the guards
- 17:23lifted the barrier for Prince Edward and
- 17:25Sophie and waved them through the gate
- 17:27Tom had used for 20 years. The road
- 17:29cleared in about a minute. Nothing else
- 17:31did. At 9:40, Camila walked into the
- 17:35king's study without knocking, and that
- 17:37tells you the temperature before anybody
- 17:39opens their mouth. Charles is at the
- 17:41desk with the incident report in front
- 17:43of him and his glasses on. She skips the
- 17:45courtesies. She wants the order
- 17:48overturned tonight. Sending Tom round to
- 17:50park with the visitors is an insult to
- 17:52the whole family. He's been one of them
- 17:54for 20 years. Nobody should be treated
- 17:56like a stranger at his own mother's
- 17:58door. Open the gate. She tells [music]
- 18:00him, "Tonight," then a knock. William
- 18:03comes in with a black folder under his
- 18:05arm, no aids, no private secretaries,
- 18:08three people at a desk. He goes straight
- 18:10to the point, asking Tom to dinner
- 18:12belongs to the king and queen, and
- 18:14nobody in this room would ever question
- 18:16it. A pass that opens a security gate
- 18:19without a check belongs to the rules. A
- 18:22dinner guest doesn't get to hand himself
- 18:23the keys. He lays the first document on
- 18:26the desk. The resident security rules
- 18:28from 2021. Relatives without titles who
- 18:32don't work for the household get access
- 18:34visit by visit on an invitation. Nobody
- 18:37in that category holds a permanent
- 18:39automatic pass. Tom's 20 years through
- 18:42the West Gate rested on guards being
- 18:44kind to a familiar face. He never had a
- 18:47right to any of it. Camila says it's
- 18:49been the custom for years and nobody has
- 18:51ever minded. William takes out the
- 18:53second document, the kitchen complaint
- 18:56with the stamp from her own office
- 18:57across the top and beside it, the
- 19:00independent copy from the security
- 19:02system. He sets them side by side so she
- 19:04can read both at once. A photographer in
- 19:06the family kitchen 2 weeks earlier and
- 19:09her office marking it resolved and
- 19:11filing it where the king would never see
- 19:13it. People who've heard the account say
- 19:15her face changed. She hadn't known. That
- 19:19part seems clear from every version I've
- 19:21read. William turns to his father and
- 19:23asks him quietly whether hiding a camera
- 19:27in the family kitchen protected the
- 19:28family or protected Tom. Camila changes
- 19:32tac. Tom was careless. She says he meant
- 19:35nothing by it. He's never made a penny
- 19:37from setting foot in any palace and
- 19:39anybody who says otherwise is lying.
- 19:41William doesn't argue with her. He opens
- 19:43the last pocket of the folder. The third
- 19:46set of papers ran to exactly 15 pages.
- 19:49Across the top of the first page sat the
- 19:52letterhead of a brand agency with a
- 19:54London address run by a man who'd moved
- 19:56in the same circles as Tom for years.
- 19:59That's the man I told you to hang on to.
- 20:02Nobody has printed his name, and I'm not
- 20:04going to guess at it. The distribution
- 20:06list in the top right corner named three
- 20:08luxury houses, one in New York, one in
- 20:10Dubai, one in Milan. The email stamp in
- 20:14the archive showed the date it went out,
- 20:15the 16th of October, one day before Tom
- 20:19walked three executives into the picture
- 20:21gallery at St. James's. That's the date
- 20:24I asked you to keep. Tom met those three
- 20:26people the day after they'd read the
- 20:27pitch. Charles reads it page by page
- 20:30slowly, the way he reads everything.
- 20:32Pages 1 to 11 are harmless enough. Tom's
- 20:35career, his books, his columns, ideas
- 20:37for television, the kind of glossy
- 20:40biography any agent sticks on the front
- 20:42of a pitch. One detail stands out. Tom's
- 20:44name runs right through those pages. His
- 20:47photograph sits on page two, and his
- 20:49signature appears nowhere. The agent
- 20:51signed it. Tom had lent the man his name
- 20:54and his pass, and the man had built a
- 20:56price list on top of them. Then the king
- 20:58turns to page 12 at the top in bold a
- 21:01heading filming and access to informal
- 21:04heritage spaces. Underneath the agency
- 21:07promised the three companies that their
- 21:09products would appear in photographs and
- 21:11film shot inside private royal spaces.
- 21:14The historic kitchens, the picture line
- 21:16corridors, the private gardens at
- 21:18Windsor and at Sandringham. It went
- 21:20further than that. It offered private
- 21:22introductions between the company
- 21:24executives and members of the family at
- 21:27relaxed family occasions arranged
- 21:29through the same friendly channel and it
- 21:31spelled out the thinking in plain
- 21:33business language. Sponsor a charity
- 21:35gala and the public sees an advert. Put
- 21:38your handbag on a kitchen table and a
- 21:40candid photograph inside a royal home
- 21:43and wealthy customers will believe the
- 21:45king's family picked it out themselves.
- 21:48Page 12 was selling one thing. The
- 21:50feeling of being let in. The family's
- 21:52own front door sold by the yard. That's
- 21:55the page I promised you at the very
- 21:56start. The one the whole thing turns on.
- 21:59Everything else in that folder is how
- 22:00they got there. Charles turns to the
- 22:03last page and stops. Camila asks him
- 22:05what it says. He doesn't answer. She
- 22:08asks again, he lays the page face down
- 22:11on the desk, takes his glasses off, and
- 22:13says nothing at all. Sources describe a
- 22:16silence long enough that a footman in
- 22:18the corer assumed the meeting was over
- 22:21and nearly knocked. He won't say it. He
- 22:23won't put that number into words in
- 22:25front of his wife in his own study about
- 22:27her son. William says it for him.
- 22:30£250,000
- 22:32a year. That was page 15. Each company
- 22:36every year Camila tries the last
- 22:37argument she has left. It's a draft. She
- 22:40says a sounding out. Not one penny has
- 22:42changed hands. William answers her
- 22:44without raising his voice. Nobody in
- 22:47this room is saying anybody got paid.
- 22:49The danger is that somebody put a market
- 22:51price on the gate of Windsor Castle and
- 22:54posted it to three countries. If that
- 22:56pitch ever reaches the papers, draft or
- 22:59no draft, the public will read it as the
- 23:01royal family quietly letting relatives
- 23:03sell access to the throne. And then he
- 23:06says the thing that's been sitting under
- 23:07all of it since the gallery, his
- 23:09children use that kitchen. He isn't
- 23:11going to have them walking past a tripod
- 23:14to get to their breakfast for anybody's
- 23:16agency at any price. I've read every
- 23:19version of this I could find, and none
- 23:21of them says where that money would have
- 23:23ended up. So, I'm not going to tell you
- 23:25it was heading for Tom. I don't know,
- 23:27and neither does anybody else who's
- 23:29talking. The pitch carried his name and
- 23:31leaned on his pass. And in that study,
- 23:34that was enough. Charles sits a long
- 23:37time with his glasses in his hand.
- 23:39[music] He's lived through the years
- 23:41when this family's name got tangled up
- 23:44with outside money and it took a decade
- 23:46to scrub it clean. He thinks about his
- 23:48grandchildren in that kitchen and he
- 23:51looks at his son who has carried one
- 23:54photograph of himself through his whole
- 23:56adult life and who married a woman who
- 23:58wears Diana's sapphire on her left hand.
- 24:01William knows what one stolen picture of
- 24:03that ring on a kitchen table at Windsor
- 24:06would fetch. So does his father. Then he
- 24:09puts the glasses back on. Charles
- 24:12upholds Williams directive in full.
- 24:14Tom's name comes off the automatic
- 24:16access systems at Windsor Castle, at
- 24:19Sandringham House, and on the Balmoral
- 24:21estate. He stays family. He's welcome at
- 24:23private dinners, and he's welcome at
- 24:25Christmas. And every visit now needs two
- 24:27days notice and the same screening as
- 24:29any other guest. The private gate is
- 24:31shut to him permanently. Then the king
- 24:34gives a second order. And in some ways,
- 24:36it's the bigger of the two. No office,
- 24:38he says, and he names the queen's office
- 24:40out loud, will ever again interfere with
- 24:43a report from the security staff or hold
- 24:45one back. Control of passes and of any
- 24:48filming in the private residences goes
- 24:50to William.
