- 0:00This might be the most valuable piece of
- 0:01the podcast for young people. So, let me
- 0:02just make this point.
- 0:06Right now, I would say the youth of at
- 0:08least the Western world is obsessed with
- 0:11the idea of independence, freedom, and
- 0:13optionality.
- 0:15They want to do it their way and have
- 0:17all options open. They never want to get
- 0:19tied down. They don't want to commit to
- 0:20a career. They don't want to commit to
- 0:21anything. It's because like I don't I
- 0:23don't know if something's going to
- 0:24change.
- 0:26But, the optionality that we earn,
- 0:30it's like just making a ton of money,
- 0:32but never spending it.
- 0:34If you die at the end of your life with
- 0:36a big pile of money never having spent
- 0:37it, you wasted your life.
- 0:39It's like the ant that saved for winter
- 0:41and saves its entire life, but never
- 0:42actually eats this big breadcrumb and
- 0:43then they're gone. And so, options are
- 0:45like money, which is that the only time
- 0:47that they have value is when they are
- 0:48spent, when they are used. And so,
- 0:51in the short term, you'll have those
- 0:53options, but you need to like the part
- 0:55of growing up is
- 0:57making commitments, which is eliminating
- 0:59alternatives, which means you make you
- 1:01walk through one-way doors knowing that
- 1:03you can't walk back.
- 1:05And like I see that as a big sign of
- 1:06maturity.
- 1:08As you've taken these steps because
- 1:09you've decided
- 1:10and decidere, right? The Latin is to cut
- 1:12off. You cut off options because you say
- 1:14this is more meaningful to me. And it's
- 1:17because people are unwilling to make
- 1:18trades.
- 1:20Like all deci- like there are no
- 1:23solutions, there are only trade-offs.
- 1:25So, like you will sacrifice novelty for
- 1:28loyalty when you get married. That's a
- 1:30trade. And at some point it will be
- 1:32worth it more for you to have loyalty
- 1:34than novelty in your life.
- 1:36Right? Um
- 1:38And so, there are many trades like this
- 1:39that we have to make, but the ultimate
- 1:42trade is the one that we don't make when
- 1:43you basically get neither thing that you
- 1:45want. Because you sit on the sideline
- 1:48with your big stack of money, your big
- 1:49stack of options never having used them.
- 1:52Because some doors also do close
- 1:55because at a certain point you do lose
- 1:56options by not committing.
- 1:59>> Right.
- 2:00>> If you are a girl and you want to wait
- 2:01for your options, if you're 60 the
- 2:03likely that you're going to be able to
- 2:04have kids is very low.
- 2:06If you didn't have kids by the time
- 2:07you're 60, I'm using that as an extreme
- 2:09example here because I don't feel like
- 2:10dealing with it.
- 2:11Um, then you're probably not going to
- 2:13have kids. And it's because that option
- 2:15is now gone for you. And so some options
- 2:17have an expiration date on them. And so
- 2:19sometimes we just have to decide and
- 2:20realize that we will not get everything
- 2:21in life. And I think that is that is
- 2:23probably one of the biggest things that
- 2:26I would say like what has changed about
- 2:27me from a maturity perspective is
- 2:29realizing that you cannot have it all.
- 2:32And like very viscerally. Like if you
- 2:35want a house that has a mountain view
- 2:38and is on the beach and is also secluded
- 2:41but walking distance from grocery stores
- 2:44and shops and shopping.
- 2:46You can't.
- 2:48Because you can't be in the mountains
- 2:49and then also have the the the the
- 2:52shopping malls and all the stuff. And
- 2:53you can't be on the beach but also have
- 2:54the mountain view. It doesn't like these
- 2:56things these things sit separately. And
- 2:58if you want to also have
- 3:00uh the beach but also have skiing like
- 3:02there there is no place that has those
- 3:03things. And so we want everything and
- 3:07are unwilling to sacrifice anything and
- 3:09as a result get nothing.
- 3:12I would say that's probably
- 3:14the biggest thing that has changed as
- 3:16I've gotten older is that I'm willing to
- 3:18make trades.
- 3:21>> Beautiful. If you like this video and
