- 0:00Can I tell you something?
- 0:01>> Oh, my gosh, what? Let me guess.
- 0:04>> Okay, I'll let you guess.
- 0:05>> Is it about your car?
- 0:08I I already know.
- 0:10>> How do you know?
- 0:10>> Cuz I just I just
- 0:12You know what? I know
- 0:13>> it?
- 0:13>> Yeah.
- 0:15>> What do you think happened?
- 0:17You have a popped tire.
- 0:20You went over a curb.
- 0:21You backed into something.
- 0:23>> Close, but the opposite.
- 0:25>> You Yeah, you you put your the pedal to
- 0:28the metal cuz you're on your phone.
- 0:30>> No. No. Okay.
- 0:32I had a fender bender.
- 0:34Barely touched this on my way here. What
- 0:36happened was I was on the [snorts]
- 0:38>> beautiful.
- 0:39>> Thank you. It's very I was on the phone
- 0:41with my friend and what?
- 0:44>> It's so weird. I think that black thing
- 0:46just it's on your lip now. This is
- 0:47[laughter] bizarre.
- 0:49This is a bizarre moment. Sorry. Sorry,
- 0:51gang. Sorry. [laughter]
- 0:52What what what was that a Was that a
- 0:55coke cocoa nib?
- 0:57Cocoa nib.
- 0:58Cocoa nib. It actually
- 1:00>> It was. How did you know that?
- 1:01>> It is?
- 1:02>> Yes. What is your problem today? Oh my
- 1:04gosh, you're so prophetic.
- 1:06Can you Can you tell No, no, like
- 1:08Godlike prophecy.
- 1:10>> [laughter]
- 1:11>> No, I'm impressed with that movie.
- 1:13>> I know.
- 1:14>> Okay, well
- 1:14>> Cuz I think nobody can get mad at us for
- 1:16at us for anything anymore cuz they know
- 1:18us. They know we're literally kidding
- 1:2099% of the time.
- 1:21>> I know, except for those couple where
- 1:23they're like, "You girls are so are so
- 1:25so fluffy."
- 1:26>> I know.
- 1:27>> You joke too much. I'm like, "Can we
- 1:29laugh a little?"
- 1:30>> Literally. I know.
- 1:31>> So this guy this guy not this guy.
- 1:34So I'm on the phone with a friend and
- 1:36she's telling me about just like this
- 1:39story about this girl who was getting
- 1:41sober and going to rehab and was like
- 1:43going through a lot and I was just
- 1:45overtaken by compassion.
- 1:47>> Yeah.
- 1:48>> And we were going slow like so slow. I
- 1:50mean, I barely touched this person.
- 1:52>> Were you on the highway?
- 1:53>> No. No, no. [snorts] I was at a
- 1:55stoplight.
- 1:55>> Mhm.
- 1:56>> Um but you know how cars inch up a
- 1:58little bit? And so I I start praying and
- 2:01I'm like, "Lord, I cover this girl in
- 2:04the blood of Jesus." But I closed my
- 2:06eyes.
- 2:07>> [gasps]
- 2:08>> And all of the sudden
- 2:09>> [laughter]
- 2:11>> I just did a little like a like a little
- 2:13just a little kiss. Like I just kissed
- 2:15its bumper and
- 2:17nothing happened. Nothing was dented. It
- 2:19was just a little paint.
- 2:23And it was all cuz I wanted to pray for
- 2:25this girl.
- 2:27>> [laughter]
- 2:28>> I can't. But for everyone listening
- 2:31right now, just
- 2:33I am so sorry that when it comes
- 2:35[laughter] to driving on the road, we
- 2:37are just such
- 2:38terrible examples to the
- 2:40>> [laughter]
- 2:40>> Horrible examples. Do as I say, don't do
- 2:42as I do.
- 2:43>> bumper, huh? You just you just
- 2:45[laughter]
- 2:45kissed the bumper. [gasps]
- 2:47>> And then my my friend goes, um, "I'm
- 2:50confused. Why did Jesus let you run into
- 2:52that person if you were like doing
- 2:54something like praying?" And I was like,
- 2:56>> don't know. Maybe that's close your eyes
- 2:58and drive.
- 2:58>> it's not his fault. I closed my freaking
- 3:00eyes." Like and she goes, "You standing
- 3:02up for him?" I said, "Absolutely."
- 3:03>> So my dad always is like 20 ft behind
- 3:07the car.
- 3:08>> My mom, too.
- 3:09>> And it's something that like always
- 3:10irritates me cuz it's like, "Dad, just
- 3:12go. Like just drive."
- 3:13>> That's me, too. Just go.
- 3:16>> But now I'm so much like my father when
- 3:18I drive. Like I drive extra slow. I stop
- 3:21at the yellow light.
- 3:22>> You become your dad every day.
- 3:24>> No, it's actually uncanny.
- 3:26>> And I'm becoming my mom.
- 3:28>> But I am like my mom too in certain
- 3:30ways. But
- 3:31>> We just become more like them as we get
- 3:33older.
- 3:34>> So
- 3:36now, [clears throat] yeah. But here's
- 3:39the thing.
- 3:40I'd rather
- 3:42be slow and annoying than like
- 3:46get a like
- 3:47>> It's good.
- 3:48>> Get in a car accident.
- 3:49>> No, and it's good and it's good and it's
- 3:52good.
- 3:52>> to me though. My sister even said it.
- 3:54She's like, "You used to drive like
- 3:57>> I think your frontal lobe
- 3:58>> Andretti."
- 3:59>> Who's that?
- 4:00>> The race car driver. Like I used to
- 4:03weave. I used to like I was nuts.
- 4:06>> Do you know Lewis Hamilton?
- 4:07>> Yeah.
- 4:07>> Um
- 4:08>> He's dating Kim.
- 4:09>> Kim. First name basis. Our girl Kim.
- 4:12>> [laughter]
- 4:12>> How you been? How was everything?
- 4:16>> How's everything?
- 4:17>> How's everything?
- 4:19Everything's good. Me and you have some
- 4:20travel coming up. We're going to Vegas,
- 4:24Arizona, Orlando, bus.
- 4:28>> Bus.
- 4:28>> Bus. Car.
- 4:29>> Party.
- 4:29>> Club.
- 4:30>> Club.
- 4:31>> Car.
- 4:31>> Club.
- 4:31>> How does that How does that song go?
- 4:33Party. Bus.
- 4:34>> Do people still go to nightclubs?
- 4:37There's no way, right?
- 4:39>> I've heard that LA club culture died.
- 4:42What are we talking about?
- 4:44>> [laughter]
- 4:44>> Thank god.
- 4:45>> think Well, you know Gen Z like doesn't
- 4:47really drink.
- 4:49I love us.
- 4:50>> I'm telling you this is amazing.
- 4:52>> Yeah.
- 4:52>> You love
- 4:54>> [laughter]
- 4:54>> You love your uh
- 4:56>> I love my cute little camera.
- 4:59I am a millennial Gen Z cusp. I'm on the
- 5:01year that it switched.
- 5:03>> me too.
- 5:04>> [laughter]
- 5:07>> I know.
- 5:08>> Me too.
- 5:08>> Me too.
- 5:09>> Seriously.
- 5:09>> Two Gen Z's over here just trying to
- 5:11figure it out with our low-rise baggy
- 5:13jeans.
- 5:14>> [laughter]
- 5:14>> We're just a couple of Gen Z kids.
- 5:17>> Yeah. No matter what any of these Gen
- 5:20Z's are doing, I'm never going to stop
- 5:23>> wearing high-waisted
- 5:24>> high-waisted jeans with my thick belts
- 5:26and my '90s little
- 5:29>> You know.
- 5:30>> Yeah.
- 5:31>> What's the word? Style?
- 5:32>> Uh
- 5:33Fashionista.
- 5:34>> That's not [laughter] the word. Okay.
- 5:36>> I sweated a lot last night. And in my
- 5:39sleep Yeah. Is it sweated? Sweat.
- 5:41>> it's it's sweat.
- 5:43>> No, it's
- 5:44>> It's sweat.
- 5:44>> Sweat.
- 5:45>> [sighs]
- 5:46>> No, that's called swass.
- 5:47>> It's sweet.
- 5:48>> What?
- 5:49>> Swass.
- 5:49>> [clears throat and laughter]
- 5:54[gasps and laughter]
- 5:55>> You're going to give an account for that
- 5:56one.
- 5:57>> your hair look this morning [snorts]
- 5:58when you woke up? Have
- 5:59Have you been wearing a bonnet?
- 6:01>> Yeah, but I took a shower this morning.
- 6:03>> you be wearing a bonnet with your
- 6:04[snorts] husband?
- 6:05>> Yeah.
- 6:06>> Yeah?
- 6:07>> Yeah.
- 6:07>> Okay.
- 6:08>> I have enough
- 6:09uh
- 6:10Like it's all about the personality. You
- 6:12distract him with your multiple
- 6:14personalities and he won't even notice
- 6:16that what you're wearing a bonnet and an
- 6:18eye mask.
- 6:19>> How many personalities do you think you
- 6:20have?
- 6:22>> Mhm.
- 6:24Nah, I just have one.
- 6:26How many do you have?
- 6:27>> [gasps]
- 6:29>> I think two.
- 6:31>> What are they?
- 6:33>> I think I can be very calm and just
- 6:36chill and then I can also be very fiery
- 6:40and
- 6:41>> Boston.
- 6:42>> I don't know why I'm laughing.
- 6:44>> What is it
- 6:45What What do they call me when I turn
- 6:47Boston? Fred.
- 6:49>> Who calls you Fred?
- 6:50>> Like a Like a southy
- 6:52like Irish man coming out of the pub
- 6:55that's about to like
- 6:57>> fight everybody.
- 6:58>> No, just kind of
- 6:59>> [laughter]
- 7:00>> Smoke a cigarette and fight everybody.
- 7:01>> Start some trouble.
- 7:03>> [gasps]
- 7:04>> You've been super Boston recently, I
- 7:05feel.
- 7:06>> Really?
- 7:07>> Yeah.
- 7:07>> What What do you mean?
- 7:08>> the last year.
- 7:09>> You think You know what it You know why?
- 7:10>> Huh?
- 7:11>> Cuz I Cuz I finally accept myself.
- 7:13>> Good.
- 7:14>> All those years trying to get rid of
- 7:16this accent.
- 7:18>> For what?
- 7:18>> That's so crazy.
- 7:20>> to for acting.
- 7:21Even though I always ended up just
- 7:23booking the Brooklyn girl.
- 7:25>> It's just so crazy because it's the best
- 7:27part of your personality. It's like your
- 7:29personality. It's your humor.
- 7:31>> Really?
- 7:32>> Yeah.
- 7:33>> Well, you You've been more Boston this
- 7:36year more than ever, too.
- 7:38>> Yeah.
- 7:39>> [gasps]
- 7:40>> Well, two of your best friends are from
- 7:41Boston.
- 7:43>> Yeah, but I don't think I'm
- 7:45>> But Christina doesn't have
- 7:46>> She doesn't have a Boston accent at all.
- 7:48>> At all. I don't think Neither does my
- 7:49sister.
- 7:52>> I think it's just like an East Coast
- 7:54vibe. I think I just
- 7:56>> What's the East Coast vibe? Like tell me
- 7:58about it.
- 7:58>> Like probably very I feel like the East
- 8:01Coast vibe is like hyperbolic, for
- 8:04example. It's like we use very intense
- 8:06language. We're very passionate. Like
- 8:09the difference Like well, you know what
- 8:11I Does that make sense?
- 8:13>> Like what?
- 8:14>> Like we're very intense in the way that
- 8:15we speak. We
- 8:17>> Yeah.
- 8:18Intense.
- 8:20Oh, like Like what are you talking
- 8:22about? Like
- 8:23>> Like what are you talking about? Yeah.
- 8:24>> Do Do an Do an impression of your mom
- 8:26and I'll do an impression of mine.
- 8:27>> Okay, hang on.
- 8:30>> I I What's Yeah.
- 8:31>> My mom, when she doesn't like a
- 8:33conversation that's happening and knows
- 8:34that someone else in the family is about
- 8:36to get triggered, she goes, "Uh-huh. Oh,
- 8:39I love that movie." Yeah, I remember. It
- 8:41makes me so mad.
- 8:42>> Wait. Wait. What?
- 8:43>> So, if I like bring something up like at
- 8:45a dinner table or like whatever and she
- 8:47doesn't like it, she'll go, "Oh, yeah, I
- 8:49love that movie. Uh-huh." And like
- 8:51switch. It makes me so mad.
- 8:54>> If she doesn't like it?
- 8:56>> Yeah, if she doesn't like it, she'll go,
- 8:57"Oh, I love that movie."
- 8:59>> Do you know why you don't you don't you
- 9:00hate it so much? Cuz you do that. Cuz
- 9:03you do that.
- 9:03>> No, I don't.
- 9:04>> I don't do that. [snorts]
- 9:06>> You do that when I'm having a panic
- 9:07attack. You'll go, "Oh, Target."
- 9:09>> Oh, yeah. Well, yeah, but tell me that
- 9:10doesn't help you when you're on the
- 9:12highway about to drive off the cliff.
- 9:14>> That hasn't happened, by the way, in a
- 9:15[laughter] long time.
- 9:16You're actually getting really bad.
- 9:19I'm better, right?
- 9:20>> You're doing so good.
- 9:21>> Thank you. What were you going to say?
- 9:24What does your mom do?
- 9:25>> Oh, no, I was going to say that I wasn't
- 9:28Cuz we're talking about like be a doer
- 9:30of the word, not just a sayer.
- 9:32>> Yeah.
- 9:32>> And
- 9:35I wasn't a doer yesterday of the word.
- 9:39>> Why? Sometimes when you just get on the
- 9:41phone with your mom, you got to
- 9:43>> [laughter]
- 9:44>> you got to take deep breaths and then
- 9:45you get off the phone and you're like,
- 9:46someday I'm going to miss this.
- 9:49Do you ever do that?
- 9:50>> I was just on the phone with my mom
- 9:52coming in here. And I had a moment where
- 9:54I was about to be like, okay, well, I
- 9:56love you. And then I literally felt
- 9:57myself go,
- 9:59it's okay, relax.
- 10:00>> Yeah.
- 10:00>> You know?
- 10:01>> Yeah, all right. That's what I do. I go,
- 10:03all right, it's time to go. And then
- 10:05that's how you just like stay No, stay
- 10:07on the phone. I did that yesterday, too.
- 10:09>> I hate when you do that to me. When
- 10:10you're like, all right, well, I love
- 10:13you. Take care. Send photos.
- 10:15>> All right, text me.
- 10:16>> That's you.
- 10:16>> I'll call you right back, right? I'll
- 10:18call you right back, someone's calling.
- 10:19>> Well, do you know what you do?
- 10:21>> [laughter]
- 10:24>> She pretends it gets disconnected when
- 10:26somebody she wants to talk to more calls
- 10:29her. She just hangs up. I'm like
- 10:31>> Yeah, but no, no. But now when it's just
- 10:33you and I, now when it's just you and I
- 10:36you don't do that.
- 10:36>> You'll be like I'll be like, so I was
- 10:38like, no. So I was like, so what
- 10:40happened was I was hold on one second.
- 10:42Click.
- 10:42>> No, come on.
- 10:44>> Okay, tell everyone the truth.
- 10:45>> No, the truth is the truth is if I'm on
- 10:47FaceTime with multiple people
- 10:49>> [laughter]
- 10:51>> No, if I like on the the other day, I
- 10:54was on FaceTime with my mom and she was
- 10:56telling me a story and I was like, wait,
- 10:57I want Ari to hear this. So I FaceTimed
- 10:59you in. So the three of us are talking.
- 11:01I got a phone call. I said, hey guys,
- 11:02one second. I hang up. And then I leave
- 11:05you and my mom on FaceTime and then my
- 11:08mom texts me an hour later, that was so
- 11:10mean. Why did you do that?
- 11:12>> confused [laughter]
- 11:13and I knew exactly what you did and I'm
- 11:15like, anyways, Caleb Flynn.
- 11:17>> I know. And then you guys sat and talked
- 11:19for another hour. Um, but I don't do it
- 11:21when it's just me and you. But I will be
- 11:23like,
- 11:24>> You won't hang up but you'll be like
- 11:27>> [laughter]
- 11:30>> I [gasps] don't I have this really
- 11:32[clears throat] weird thing where I
- 11:33don't know how to get off the phone with
- 11:35people. It makes me uncomfortable to
- 11:37have to say goodbye.
- 11:39>> It's when somebody that you want to talk
- 11:41to more in that season.
- 11:44>> Season?
- 11:46>> No, I um no, sometimes like I just want
- 11:49to be treated like a woman. [laughter]
- 11:51I don't want to be treated like a little
- 11:53kid.
- 11:53>> Who's treating you like a little
- 11:54>> what I'm saying. The incongruent the
- 11:56sayer the So, my mom calls me
- 11:59and it's just like every day
- 12:01Hi. What's so
- 12:04Nothing. What's up? Did you pay that
- 12:05bill? [laughter] Did you lock the door?
- 12:07>> It's First of all, you do it in in
- 12:10person.
- 12:11>> No, I'm like, "Mom, [clears throat] yes,
- 12:12I locked the door and I'm also been
- 12:14living on my own for like since I was a
- 12:16kid." No, because my freaking kid
- 12:19doesn't have her freaking brain screwed
- 12:22on. All right? And you're going to call
- 12:24me and you're going to say, "Mom, I
- 12:25forgot to pay the bill. It's late." No,
- 12:27you're like, "Did you look both ways
- 12:28before you crossed the street?"
- 12:30>> It's amazing.
- 12:31>> [laughter]
- 12:31>> All day.
- 12:32>> It's amazing.
- 12:33>> And so I snapped on her a little bit and
- 12:35then I called her back and I go, "Was
- 12:36this being a doer or the word?" No, I
- 12:38go, "I'm sorry, Mom." She goes, "Yeah,
- 12:40you better be. Goodbye."
- 12:42>> You know what my You know what the I
- 12:44think this is an East Coast thing.
- 12:46So, she It's so funny like even when I
- 12:49was little with the nuns she So, she
- 12:50would say, "If you act up, I'm calling
- 12:52the nuns."
- 12:54Yeah. So, she would have her friend Gail
- 12:57like she They had a whole script. She
- 12:59would pretend she was the nun and she
- 13:00goes, [laughter] "Oh, yeah? You want to
- 13:02act like that? You're going to the nuns.
- 13:03Pack your stuff." I was like a kid and
- 13:06I'd be like, "No."
- 13:08And she'd be like, "Yeah." She goes,
- 13:10"All right, and if you do it again,
- 13:11here, she's on the phone. Talk to her."
- 13:14And Gail would pretend she would pretend
- 13:15she's the nun. "Hello, Ariel.
- 13:18You're going to be a good girl, right?"
- 13:20>> [laughter]
- 13:21>> Wait, that's so funny. That's what Vilma
- 13:23does with the kids. I think she goes um
- 13:25"Oh, I'm going to call your teacher. I'm
- 13:27going to call your teacher." And she
- 13:28would go, "No!"
- 13:30>> Yeah. [laughter]
- 13:31Yeah, and so for that next week I'd be
- 13:32on my best behavior.
- 13:34>> So we didn't have to you know what put
- 13:36>> call the nuns. I'll call the freaking
- 13:37nuns. [laughter] Get in your room.
- 13:39>> All right, guys, quick ad break.
- 13:40Groceries are up. Gas is up. Rent is up.
- 13:44Your wireless bill? Also up. But while
- 13:47everyone else has been quietly hiking
- 13:49your bill, Mint Mobile has kept their
- 13:51wireless plans starting at $15 a month.
- 13:54While everyone else keeps finding new

- 13:58you less, which is why we love what Mint
- 14:00Mobile is doing. We're on our phones

- 16:06Hey, can I ask you a question? If you
- 16:07were to date John, Matthew, Mark, or
- 16:10Luke,
- 16:10>> [laughter]
- 16:12>> who would you date?
- 16:17I would date John.
- 16:18John the Baptist.
- 16:20>> Oh, I meant the beloved, but you like
- 16:22the Baptist.
- 16:24John, Mark, who else?
- 16:26>> Luke and Matthew.
- 16:28>> I mean, I wish I could be with Paul, but
- 16:30he remains single.
- 16:31>> He remained single.
- 16:32>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:33>> So, that's not an option. Who would you
- 16:34be with?
- 16:35>> [snorts]
- 16:35>> I would probably want Can I Why isn't
- 16:37James in that that
- 16:39>> Yeah, you could be
- 16:40James of Zebedee?
- 16:41>> I probably would be with James just cuz
- 16:43he seems so rational and
- 16:45>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:46>> kind and I feel like he's super cute,
- 16:49too.
- 16:49>> He is Well, yeah, cuz he was cute on The
- 16:51Chosen.
- 16:52>> I don't know.
- 16:52>> He was the cute one on The Chosen.
- 16:54James, yeah.
- 16:55>> [snorts]
- 16:55>> Um
- 16:57If we could go through the disciples, I
- 16:59would choose This is the most ridiculous
- 17:01episode. I would choose
- 17:03um obviously Peter because me and Peter
- 17:06would get into so much trouble together.
- 17:09Two fools.
- 17:11Well, okay.
- 17:12>> [laughter]
- 17:16[laughter]
- 17:17>> What's that?
- 17:20>> [gasps]
- 17:21>> You mean?
- 17:22>> [laughter]
- 17:23>> I don't know what you mean. Like
- 17:25>> Yeah.
- 17:26>> Like acting fool like fooling around.
- 17:28>> [laughter]
- 17:29>> Would you fish with them?
- 17:31>> Yeah, we'd Yeah, we'd fish together.
- 17:34We'd probably have a little bit of like
- 17:35a toxic relationship.
- 17:37>> would be nuts together.
- 17:39>> You'd be like fighting.
- 17:41>> [laughter]
- 17:42>> Jesus would have been your saying go
- 17:44get away from me Satan to be too.
- 17:46[laughter]
- 17:46>> What is going on?
- 17:48>> No, remember when he was like trying to
- 17:50tell Jesus cuz he was manic and he's
- 17:52like kept [laughter] behind him saying
- 17:53it. So Jesus would do it.
- 17:55>> No, that's literally me. We've been
- 17:56going through the book of James.
- 17:59>> Remember when we used to speak Spanish?
- 18:01>> Yeah.
- 18:01>> Okay.
- 18:02Um
- 18:03We've been going through the book of
- 18:04James for a long time now. And I'm so
- 18:08grateful for the way that we move
- 18:09through it because I think reading the
- 18:11Bible should be verse by verse like
- 18:13this. And so today we are finishing the
- 18:15book of James and I'm just really
- 18:18excited for this.
- 18:20>> And no, we're not finishing the book of
- 18:22James. Sorry, we're finishing the first
- 18:24chapter of James.
- 18:25>> [laughter]
- 18:28[gasps]
- 18:28>> Watch your mouth.
- 18:30>> [laughter]
- 18:30>> Okay.
- 18:31So
- 18:33let's read it all first. We're going to
- 18:34go James 1:22 all the way to James 1:20
- 18:39seven. Do not merely listen to the word
- 18:42and so deceive yourselves. Do what it
- 18:45says. Anyone who listens to the word but
- 18:47does not do what it says is like someone
- 18:50who looks at his face in a mirror and
- 18:52after looking at himself goes away and
- 18:55immediately forgets what he looks like.
- 18:57But whoever looks intently into the
- 18:59perfect law that gives freedom and
- 19:02continues in it, not forgetting what
- 19:04they have heard but doing it, they will
- 19:06be blessed in what they do.
- 19:09>> Those who consider themselves and do not
- 19:11keep a tight rein on their tongues
- 19:13deceive themselves.
- 19:15And their religion is worthless.
- 19:17Religion that God our father accepts as
- 19:20pure and faultless is this. To look
- 19:22after orphans and widows in their
- 19:24distress and to keep oneself from being
- 19:27polluted by the world.
- 19:28>> All right, let's start verse by verse.
- 19:30That first verse, James 1:22, do not be
- 19:33doers of the word or sorry, be doers of
- 19:36the word. Do not merely listen to the
- 19:38word and so Stop. [laughter]
- 19:43Be do do not be doers of the word. Be
- 19:46[snorts] doers of the word, you guys. Do
- 19:48not merely listen to the word and so
- 19:49deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
- 19:51James word word
- 19:54James warns that hearing God's word
- 19:56without obeying it leads to
- 19:57self-deception. Now, there are two ways
- 20:00I feel like this has come up in my life.
- 20:02First, it's when I first started reading
- 20:04the Bible and I would cherry-pick from
- 20:06the word what served me. So, I would
- 20:08read all the passages about God being
- 20:10sovereign and God being kind and God
- 20:13being faithful and delivering me from my
- 20:15enemies and delivering me from anxieties
- 20:18and and like all the scripture that is
- 20:20like comfort comfort comfort. Jesus is
- 20:23here for you and he loves you so much.
- 20:25And then the parts of it that actually
- 20:27convicted me and confronted me and
- 20:29challenged me to change and be more like
- 20:32Jesus. I would be like, no, thank you.
- 20:34>> Yeah.
- 20:35>> That's not for me. So, I was like and
- 20:37you guys know this about me but and and
- 20:39you too that we were like literally
- 20:41reading the Bible, loving the word,
- 20:43believing in the word and then just
- 20:44leaving out the parts that we didn't
- 20:46feel like succumbing to yet.
- 20:48>> Yeah.
- 20:49>> Um and then the other way though is
- 20:52and this is something I've been and I
- 20:54want your opinion on this. This is
- 20:55something I've been sensing and seeing a
- 20:57lot recently that like
- 21:00I feel like
- 21:01when we try to interpret the word in a
- 21:06way that serves us, and I know I've been
- 21:08there, and
- 21:10I just see this a lot where like someone
- 21:12can be going through something in their
- 21:13life and read the word in a way that
- 21:17kind of
- 21:18either justifies them or
- 21:21uh
- 21:22just makes them like right in a
- 21:24situation when really God is like
- 21:27maybe speaking something else, and I
- 21:29think that's something that
- 21:30>> an example of that cuz I'm truly
- 21:33I want to know what you mean.
- 21:33>> Yeah.
- 21:35So, basically, what I mean is like
- 21:38I'll I'll take an example from my own
- 21:40life. Like reading scripture and being
- 21:43like, "Okay, I need to be the kind of
- 21:45friend that scripture calls me to
- 21:47challenge and confront and XYZ and blah
- 21:51blah blah," and I'm doing that, and this
- 21:53person isn't receiving it well, but
- 21:54that's on them because I'm doing what
- 21:56scripture is calling me to do.
- 21:57>> Yeah.
- 21:58>> When in reality, when I look back with
- 22:01humility, I say, "Oh, I was taking
- 22:04scripture, but I wasn't doing it in the
- 22:07way that God intended for me to do it,
- 22:09and actually that person needed to be
- 22:11loved by me. That person needed to be
- 22:14accepted by me.
- 22:16That doesn't mean to be okay with what
- 22:18they were doing, but if I make this
- 22:20person feel judged and not accepted,
- 22:22they will never receive from me what I
- 22:24want them to receive."
- 22:25>> Yes.
- 22:26>> And so, I look back. I have so many
- 22:27situations like that where
- 22:29I
- 22:31I was I was deceived even reading the
- 22:33Bible, you know?
- 22:35>> Mhm. Well, that I think that's what so
- 22:37many people do. They they take it and
- 22:39they abuse the word.
- 22:40>> Right. Yeah.
- 22:41>> that so much. Like they take it and they
- 22:43like so many Christians are become so
- 22:46abusive.
- 22:47>> Right.
- 22:47>> And it makes people run from
- 22:48Christianity because they're taking
- 22:50scripture and they're like making it
- 22:52>> Yeah.
- 22:52>> into this thing that it's not.
- 22:54>> 100% Yeah. And I really like this.
- 22:56Spiritual maturity isn't simply measured
- 22:58by how much scripture we you
- 23:00but by how it transforms our lives. And
- 23:03I think it's just even in the little
- 23:05things
- 23:06I've said this so many times, but like I
- 23:08remember when I was younger, I thought
- 23:10like
- 23:11to be like a
- 23:13obeyer and a doer of the word meant that
- 23:15I just like didn't do certain things.
- 23:18When really it's like
- 23:20searching my heart, letting God search
- 23:22my heart and be like, oh yeah, that
- 23:24response like had a little bit of pride
- 23:26or that response was a little bit
- 23:28arrogant. And like those are the matters
- 23:30that I feel like God is speaking to the
- 23:33most. Like yeah, it's easy to do the big
- 23:35outward things. Like obviously we're not
- 23:37going to have sex and drink and do
- 23:38drugs. I just think it's like the small
- 23:41things of the heart, you know?
- 23:43>> And I think that's I think even like
- 23:45that's what it means in the second line
- 23:47where it says, "Anyone who listens to
- 23:49the word but does not do what it says is
- 23:52like someone who looks at his face in
- 23:54the mirror and after looking at himself
- 23:56goes away and immediately forgets what
- 23:58he looks like." That's exactly what
- 24:00you're talking about. It's like imagine
- 24:02like you you look in the mirror, you see
- 24:04like dirt all over your face.
- 24:05>> Right.
- 24:06>> And instead of washing your face off,
- 24:08you just keep keep on walking. And it's
- 24:11it's the same with scripture. Like
- 24:12>> Yeah.
- 24:13>> the word of God reveals what's in us and
- 24:17we can ignore it and continue to keep
- 24:20living the same way or we can humble
- 24:23ourselves and respond in obedience and
- 24:26let the word transform us. When David
- 24:28was a man after God's heart, it's not
- 24:30that he was perfect, but he humbled
- 24:32himself. He had a heart of repentance.
- 24:34He kept fighting for purity and that's
- 24:37that that's what it is. That's what it
- 24:38means to be a doer of the word. God does
- 24:41not want us to just be a mouthpiece. He
- 24:43wants us to demonstrate through how we
- 24:45live our lives.
- 24:46>> So good.
- 24:47>> How do how we love, how we forgive, how
- 24:49we treat people what they can do nothing
- 24:51for us, how we treat someone that maybe
- 24:55doesn't treat us the best, how generous
- 24:57and compassionate we are to others
- 24:59>> Yeah.
- 24:59>> should testify the Jesus living in us.
- 25:01And one thing I want to say is like
- 25:04we're not always going to get it
- 25:05perfect. We're not always going to
- 25:07respond like Jesus. Sometimes our flesh
- 25:09is going to get the best of us, but
- 25:11there's a difference between falling
- 25:13short and being comfortable in your
- 25:16disobedience. How can we be doers of the
- 25:19word if we don't spend time in his word?
- 25:21How can we be doers of the word if we
- 25:24are not down on our phones all day and
- 25:26we can't hear him? How can we be doers
- 25:28of the word if we don't sit in his
- 25:30presence? It's his presence that
- 25:32transforms us. It's the word of God that
- 25:34transforms us. But if we're just reading
- 25:36it and we're just like going about our
- 25:38lives and keep living the same way, then
- 25:40it's ignorance. Integrity, a person with
- 25:43integrity is someone who walks living
- 25:46out what the word of God says.
- 25:48>> Period. Yeah. And I you know what I love
- 25:51too so much is that in what you were
- 25:53reading James 1:24, how it talks about
- 25:57so you look at your face in the mirror,
- 25:58but then after looking at yourself you
- 26:00go away and immediately you forget um
- 26:03what you look like. And I think it just
- 26:05speaks to the fact that like don't walk
- 26:07away from Jesus unchanged. Don't walk
- 26:10away from reading the word unchanged.
- 26:12Don't walk away from a big conference or
- 26:14a Sunday service unchanged. Don't ride
- 26:17the highs of emotions. If you experience
- 26:20something, I can't tell you how many
- 26:21times I've like experienced something
- 26:24with Jesus where I'm confronted and I'm
- 26:26encouraged to repent and do something
- 26:28different.
- 26:30And if I just like feel that emotion, I
- 26:32think what happens to people sometimes
- 26:33is they'll just feel the shame and
- 26:35they'll feel the guilt and they'll feel
- 26:37like a I feel the confrontation and then
- 26:39they think that's enough. If you feel
- 26:41bad, that's that's what repentance is.
- 26:44And what I think people need to
- 26:45understand is that confession and
- 26:47repentance aren't the same thing.
- 26:49Confession is saying like oh yeah, I
- 26:51that is true. I do acknowledge that I
- 26:53was wrong or that is wrong or that's not
- 26:55Christ-like, that's not godly.
- 26:58But then repent. So, that's just
- 27:00confession though, and I feel like a lot
- 27:01of people stop there and that's why they
- 27:03don't have true change. You can't just
- 27:05acknowledge, yeah, that was wrong. True
- 27:07repentance means that you change your
- 27:09mind and then you turn the other way.
- 27:11So, you acknowledge, you confess to
- 27:13people and to Jesus, but then you repent
- 27:16and you say, I'm going to do it
- 27:17differently next time. And again, that
- 27:19doesn't mean that it's perfect. You are
- 27:21not a bad person if you repent and then
- 27:24fall short once again. And you and I had
- 27:26a conversation yesterday where we were
- 27:28talking about how
- 27:30I think sometimes the language is in the
- 27:32language in church is like, oh yeah, I
- 27:34met Jesus and then my entire life
- 27:36changed. And that is true in a sense. So
- 27:39many things can change about you, about
- 27:41your life. And at the same time, if you
- 27:44go 25 years living your life a certain
- 27:46way with all the trauma and all the
- 27:48triggers and all the patterns and the
- 27:50family stuff that you grew up in,
- 27:53that takes time.
- 27:55And it takes acknowledging, repenting,
- 27:59trying again the next time. Shoot, I did
- 28:01it again. That's my pattern. I'm going
- 28:03to try again. That is what we're talking
- 28:05about. So, it's not that you're going to
- 28:07be perfect, but it's not it's also not
- 28:09just the emotion of feeling bad about
- 28:11something. It's pursuing the change.
- 28:14>> The the the glorious moments that I have
- 28:18and when I feel the sweetest presence of
- 28:21Jesus is when I am literally so honest
- 28:25of like, you don't have to hide in shame
- 28:28because God can't heal what you don't
- 28:32confront.
- 28:33>> Exactly.
- 28:34>> It's like, when you hear it too, people
- 28:36could be like,
- 28:37there's certain things that I didn't
- 28:39want to give up. There's certain things
- 28:41that I didn't want to change. Go deeper,
- 28:44get real because it's in that place
- 28:45where he he communes with you. When you
- 28:48read the word, you have to just read it
- 28:50to experience the person of Jesus.
- 28:52That's when it starts to transform you.
- 28:55You have to sit with it. You have to
- 28:57say, "Encounter me in your word." Not
- 28:59just going to the word to to read, yeah,
- 29:01but to actually encounter the person of
- 29:03Jesus. That's when it starts to
- 29:05transform your life.
- 29:07>> Yeah.
- 29:07>> And that's when you become a a doer of
- 29:10the word. The word of God transforms you
- 29:13from the inside and out, but you have to
- 29:14let the walls of pride down. You have to
- 29:17stop saying, "I don't know if I believe
- 29:19this. There's some things in here I
- 29:21don't know." You know what I mean? When
- 29:23you put those walls of pride down, you
- 29:25say
- 29:27say to your father, "Encounter me in
- 29:29this. I want the word to transform me. I
- 29:31don't want to stay the way I am. I want
- 29:33to have the faith. Give me faith that I
- 29:35can read this and it can start to
- 29:37literally like do something in my
- 29:39heart." That's what I had to do from the
- 29:41very beginning. Even some things that I
- 29:43didn't understand and it was like, "It's
- 29:46been transforming my heart all these
- 29:48years." And there's And what's so
- 29:50beautiful is like
- 29:52I don't even like every month I see I'm
- 29:55like blossoming more and more, but you
- 29:57have to allow the word to transform you.
- 30:00You can't stay in pride and like with a
- 30:03heart and heart because if you do, it
- 30:05will never get to your heart and change
- 30:07you. You have to be willing to let the
- 30:09word take root in your heart to
- 30:11transform you. And that's how you look
- 30:14more like Jesus.
- 30:15>> I think one of the most important things
- 30:17to remember is that
- 30:19if you you can read the entire Bible
- 30:21start to finish and if you don't see
- 30:23Jesus in the Bible, it will do nothing
- 30:25for you.
- 30:26Every Pharisee, every religious leader,
- 30:29every like expert theologian, Paul was
- 30:32an expert in theology, Nicodemus was uh
- 30:36an expert in theology and Jesus
- 30:38literally said to Nicodemus Nicodemus
- 30:40Nicodemus, "You search the scriptures
- 30:43looking for eternal life, but you don't
- 30:45realize that the scriptures point to me.
- 30:47They're rejecting Jesus, the one who is
- 30:49himself eternal life, and searching the
- 30:52scriptures. And Jesus is like, "Hello,
- 30:53it's me in the scriptures." You can read
- 30:56them, but if you're reading them without
- 30:57him, it's not going to do anything.
- 30:59Information doesn't change you. What you
- 31:01love changes you.
- 31:02>> Yeah, it's so true. I love that you say
- 31:04that.
- 31:05>> read the Bible all you want. We can read
- 31:07through James. And sure, we could take
- 31:09it from the perspective of morality.
- 31:11Like, yeah, we're going to do the things
- 31:13that James says because we want to be
- 31:14morally right, and we want to do the
- 31:17right thing.
- 31:18But, that's not the right motivator for
- 31:21why we are doers of the word.
- 31:23We don't want to read James and just
- 31:25write a checklist of rules and things
- 31:27that we're meant to do because that's
- 31:29the right thing. We do it because there
- 31:31is a man who died on a cross for the
- 31:33forgiveness of sins who who his whole
- 31:36point was to set us free from living in
- 31:38the bondage that a life of sin causes.
- 31:43And so, when we read James and we read
- 31:46you know, through ways that he's
- 31:48confronting us and and rebukes and
- 31:50things and instruction and guides, we do
- 31:52it because the person that this is
- 31:54coming from loves us so much and we love
- 31:56him and we want to follow him because of
- 31:58that love and because of that trust.
- 32:00It's not like you can't read the Bible
- 32:04without love, truly.
- 32:06>> and it's so beautiful, too, cuz I'm just
- 32:08even thinking like
- 32:10how he like the way he walks with you
- 32:12through through changing and stuff.
- 32:14Like, I'll I'll be doing something that
- 32:16probably won't be, you know, a doer of
- 32:20the word. And
- 32:21he just like that convic- like that
- 32:24little conviction in your heart of like,
- 32:26"Don't go that way." And it's like so
- 32:28beautiful. Like, if you partner with him
- 32:30in that way of like
- 32:33you're just your your your heart wants
- 32:35to just follow him. You have to just
- 32:38like you have to be hungry. You have to
- 32:40be like I want to do I want to be all in
- 32:42with this. And it's like it's literally
- 32:45like a father. Like you it's like no no
- 32:47no don't do that. Don't go that way. Say
- 32:49sorry. Forgive. And it's just like this
- 32:52beautiful walk and dance and you it's
- 32:54like every That's why like you don't
- 32:56have to live in shame. You just have to
- 32:58be like oh yeah, that probably wasn't
- 33:00the best thing that I did. Let me try
- 33:02this again. Let me get back up. Let me
- 33:04keep surrendering that thing. And it's
- 33:06just this beautiful walk that we're all
- 33:08on that we're always just falling and
- 33:11then getting back up and um
- 33:14>> Truly.
- 33:14>> That's why there's just no such thing as
- 33:16perfectionism, but you just keep going.
- 33:18You just keep asking him I want to I
- 33:20want to be hungry for the word. I want
- 33:22to be hungry that to do to do to look
- 33:24more like you. And in that he really
- 33:26does
- 33:28transform you.
- 33:29>> Yeah. And you know what I love so much
- 33:31talking about like
- 33:33>> [sighs]
- 33:34>> just what the word does when you truly
- 33:37obey it and follow it because James 1:25
- 33:41says, "But whoever looks intently into
- 33:44the perfect law that gives freedom and
- 33:46continues in it, not forgetting what
- 33:48they have heard, but doing it, they will
- 33:50be blessed in what they do." And I think
- 33:52that's just such a It can sound so
- 33:54contradicting, right? Whoever looks
- 33:56intently into the perfect law will
- 33:58receive freedom.
- 34:00If the perfect law gives freedom, that
- 34:02like doesn't make sense to people and
- 34:04that's what I think causes
- 34:05>> Yeah.
- 34:05>> to turn away from faith because it seems
- 34:07like a law, rules essentially, will take
- 34:11away your freedom. People think that a
- 34:14life of freedom means there's no rules,
- 34:16there's no limitations, there's nothing
- 34:18that's off limits, like go and be free.
- 34:21When in actuality, and I love what Jesus
- 34:23does consistently through the whole
- 34:24Bible, is that he's constantly
- 34:26countercultural saying actually freedom
- 34:28is abiding by my law.
- 34:30This law that I'm giving you, this um
- 34:33exhortation, this encouragement, this
- 34:35guidance, and this structure for your
- 34:38life that I'm calling you to obey, that
- 34:41will be true freedom.
- 34:42>> Yeah.
- 34:42>> Because anything that's outside of my
- 34:44law, that leads you to sin, that is the
- 34:46bondage. It is not freedom. It is
- 34:49bondage um outside of the ways of Jesus.
- 34:53And I just love that, and I think it's
- 34:55so countercultural.
- 34:58>> It is freedom, and I think about
- 35:01I think about how I used to live and the
- 35:03way my mind just my mind and the way I
- 35:05struggled and
- 35:07the way the freedom that I feel, the
- 35:10freedom that I live in, the joy that I
- 35:11carry, the peace that resides in me
- 35:14because I I follow him. I follow it it
- 35:18is it truly is freedom, and you can't
- 35:20understand it until you actually live
- 35:22it.
- 35:23>> Right. You can't. You will never
- 35:24understand it. And it feels crazy on the
- 35:27outside, and we just want to come here
- 35:28today to just encourage you guys that if
- 35:31you feel weary, if you feel tired, if
- 35:34you feel bored, even like you can feel
- 35:36bored in your faith like, "Ah, man." Or
- 35:38you can feel lazy, remember we are just
- 35:41here to encourage you guys
- 35:43let Jesus set your heart on fire to be
- 35:46doers and obeyers of the word. Today is
- 35:48the perfect day to say, "You know what?
- 35:50My heart is waking up to the word of
- 35:52God, and I am going to follow in his
- 35:53ways." And even in the little moments
- 35:55that seem insignificant, that don't seem
- 35:57like a big deal, like don't gossip or
- 36:00don't have pride or don't react in that
- 36:02way or don't numb out on your phone,
- 36:03like in those ways that might not seem
- 36:06like a big deal, take action today to be
- 36:08like, "No, I'm going to pursue the
- 36:10things of God
- 36:11>> Yeah.
- 36:11>> and I am going to obey." Yeah. All
- 36:12right, guys, last ad break. Can we talk

- 36:24way you want it to. And honestly, who
- 36:26has time for a 10-step skin care routine

- 37:41in a relationship and kept having
- 37:43unwanted doubts like, "Do I love them
- 37:45enough? Am I really happy? What if God
- 37:47has someone better for me?" And those
- 37:49questions felt impossible to ignore? And
- 37:52suddenly, you're repeatedly praying for
- 37:53certainty or signs, constantly comparing
- 37:56your relationship to others, asking
- 37:58friends what they think over and over,
- 37:59but you can't find peace no matter what
- 38:01you try? Unwanted relationship doubts
- 38:03can feel so real and so scary, but
- 38:06here's what's important to know.
- 38:07Thoughts like these can be a sign of
- 38:09relationship OCD. Unlike the stereotypes
- 38:12about being organized, real OCD is a
- 38:14serious condition that can latch onto
- 38:16anything we care about. Relationship OCD
- 38:19creates this never-ending loop of doubt
- 38:21and anxiety followed by behaviors you do
- 38:24to try to feel better, but the relief
- 38:25never lasts. But OCD doesn't have to
- 38:28take over your relationships because
- 38:30it's highly treatable with a type of
- 38:31specialized therapy called exposure and
- 38:33response prevention or ERP. And that's
- 38:36why we love NOCD. NOCD is the world's
- 38:39leading OCD treatment provider and all
- 38:41of their licensed therapists specialize
- 38:43in ERP.
- 38:44Therapy with NOCD is 100% virtual,

- 38:49million Americans, and includes between

- 39:08Guys, this episode is brought to you by
- 39:10the Glorify Ring, the world's first
- 39:12Christian smart ring. Something we've
- 39:13been learning in our walk with Jesus is
- 39:15that building a relationship with him
- 39:16isn't just about the big moments. It's
- 39:18about the little moments throughout the
- 39:20day when you intentionally choose to
- 39:22invite him in. And that's what makes the
- 39:24Glorify Ring so special. It's designed
- 39:26to gently remind you to pause and pray
- 39:28throughout your day, whether that's in
- 39:29the morning, in the middle of a busy
- 39:31afternoon, or before bed. And one of the
- 39:34best features is that you can actually
- 39:36record your prayers. You can simply
- 39:38trace a cross on the ring, hold and
- 39:40speak, and your prayer is saved in the
- 39:42Glorify app so you can revisit it later.
- 39:45And you can even connect with loved ones
- 39:47and send them a prayer when they're
- 39:48going through something difficult. And
- 39:49we love that $7 from every ring goes
- 39:52directly toward Christian causes around
- 39:53the world. It's such a beautiful
- 39:55reminder to make God part of your
- 39:57everyday life. Grow closer to God every
- 39:59day. Reserve your Glorify Ring at
- 40:02glorify.global/ggb.
- 40:04That's glorify.global/ggb.
- 40:07Okay, James 1:26. I love this one. Those
- 40:11who consider themselves religious and
- 40:13yet do not keep a tight rein on their
- 40:14tongues deceive themselves and their
- 40:17religion is worthless.
- 40:19Um Ari and I talk about this a lot, and
- 40:20I think that this is incredibly
- 40:22important, and
- 40:23and, [snorts] you know, James talks a
- 40:25lot about restraint and self-control,
- 40:28and not saying things uh out of spite
- 40:31and out of turn. And I love that James
- 40:34literally right now gives a practical
- 40:35example of being a doer in the word by
- 40:38controlling your tongue.
- 40:40And I think that this is where that
- 40:42horizontal faith that then becomes
- 40:44vertical is so important. Our
- 40:46relationship with Jesus isn't just for
- 40:49us, it has to extend to everybody in our
- 40:51lives, and I think we can do so many
- 40:54religious things, spend time in the
- 40:55secret place, read the Bible, and like I
- 40:58am so very convicted by this, because
- 41:02it's so true for all of us that we can
- 41:04do all these things, be so close to
- 41:06Jesus, and then still not control the
- 41:08way we talk to people. And I mean, I
- 41:10think James having a whole book on this
- 41:13in the Bible really, really, really,
- 41:15really, really um emphasizes that, guys.
- 41:19It doesn't matter how much time you
- 41:20spend with Jesus when we don't have
- 41:22self-control with the way that we're
- 41:23speaking to one another.
- 41:25And your spiritual maturity isn't just
- 41:27revealed by how you worship, it's
- 41:29revealed by how you speak, and I think
- 41:31that's what's really important. You can
- 41:32be the most prophetic, gifted leader in
- 41:36the church, you can be like just
- 41:38absolutely the most amazing person with
- 41:41so many gifts, but if the way you treat
- 41:43people isn't Christ-like, your gifts
- 41:45don't mean anything. Like your gifts
- 41:48aren't uh evidence that your heart's in
- 41:51a good place. I think what comes out of
- 41:52your mouth is, and I'm just truly so,
- 41:56so, so deeply convicted by that, and I
- 41:57really want to be somebody who it's not
- 42:00just like how I can't. Like being a good
- 42:03preacher,
- 42:05but then not treating people with
- 42:07respect with how I speak. You know what
- 42:09I mean?
- 42:09>> Yeah, you really you to You really have
- 42:11to look at yourself if your words don't
- 42:14match up with the Jesus that you follow
- 42:16because it's
- 42:17>> Yeah.
- 42:18>> you can't preach forgiveness and then
- 42:20hold all this unforgiveness and be nasty
- 42:22to someone. If you are listening to this
- 42:24and you're like, "Man, that's me. Like
- 42:26I'm I tear people down. I'm carrying so
- 42:28much bitterness." Go deeper in his word.
- 42:31Ask him to help you. He will. This is
- 42:33what This is what relationship with your
- 42:35father is all about. Tell him.
- 42:37>> Yeah.
- 42:38>> Literally, it's that simple. Like if
- 42:40>> It's that simple. This isn't any crazy
- 42:43thing that we even have to say. This is
- 42:45what I what we've lived.
- 42:47>> Yeah.
- 42:48>> You know, some of us have grown up with
- 42:50with not the best upbringings that yes,
- 42:52we've we have pride and anger and like
- 42:55we've watched our parents like, you
- 42:57know, and so I I understand and I have
- 42:59so much compassion, but don't stay that
- 43:02way. You have to fight to change. You
- 43:04have to go deeper with him. You could be
- 43:06the representation of someone that has
- 43:09never encountered Jesus. It could be you
- 43:11that that literally could change
- 43:13someone's life by the way you live.
- 43:15>> Right.
- 43:15>> Like think about that. We have the
- 43:17opportunity to change someone's life by
- 43:20someone watching how we live. Do you
- 43:22want somebody to watch you say you
- 43:24follow Jesus, but somebody's watching
- 43:25you talk bad about people and acting
- 43:28nasty? No. You want to be the light of
- 43:30Jesus. You want him to shine his light
- 43:32through you.
- 43:33>> Yeah.
- 43:33>> And that's something to really think
- 43:35about and I think about that often. I
- 43:37think, "Man, I want to watch what I
- 43:38say." Cuz they're watching the way I
- 43:40live. Right. And if somebody that's a
- 43:42new believer is watching you and you're
- 43:44doing the opposite, how is that going to
- 43:46make someone say, "Oh, I want to follow
- 43:48Jesus?"
- 43:49>> Yeah, 100%.
- 43:50>> You are set apart to be the light of
- 43:52Jesus.
- 43:53>> I love when you say nasty. I don't know
- 43:54why. Somebody go, "Don't be acting
- 43:57nasty."
- 43:59>> [laughter]
- 43:59>> Um last verse, James 1:27. What pure
- 44:03religion looks like. I'll give a little
- 44:06definition and then I want already to go
- 44:07into this one. So the verses religion
- 44:10that God our father accepts as pure and
- 44:12faultless as this to look after orphans
- 44:15and widows in their distress and to keep
- 44:18oneself from being polluted by the
- 44:19world. So in this moment pure religion
- 44:22means genuine devotion to God. Hear it
- 44:25again. Genuine devotion to God not
- 44:29merely outward religious activities.
- 44:32Look after orphans and widows. Reflects
- 44:35God's heart for the vulnerable. God
- 44:38protects the vulnerable. In the ancient
- 44:41world these groups were often especially
- 44:43vulnerable economically and socially.
- 44:45And then genuine faith expresses itself
- 44:48through compassion, generosity, and
- 44:51practical care for people in need. And
- 44:54then last moment keep oneself from being
- 44:56polluted by the world obviously means
- 44:58resisting sinful values, behaviors, and
- 45:01influences that oppose God.
- 45:03>> This means everything to me because if
- 45:06we're the hands and feet of Jesus and we
- 45:08follow Jesus, there's no way that you're
- 45:10following Jesus and you don't have a
- 45:12heart to
- 45:14help people and to just keep walking by
- 45:16someone that's in need or and every
- 45:19single one of us that's
- 45:22every one of us should be have someone
- 45:25that we're helping.
- 45:26>> So true.
- 45:27>> And and I mean like even if you have
- 45:29little, you you God did not save your
- 45:33life to just do things for you. With
- 45:35your life
- 45:37I love when the Apostle Paul says, "My
- 45:39life is not for my own but for the life
- 45:42of others." That is a man that truly
- 45:46knows Jesus. That is a man who truly
- 45:48said, "My life is not my own." That is
- 45:51what it means when your life isn't your
- 45:52own is when you get saved by Jesus, you
- 45:55realize that everything else is
- 45:56worthless.
- 45:58And I look back at all the things that I
- 46:00I wanted and my goals and my dreams and
- 46:03the lists that I wrote about all of the
- 46:05things that I want and while we have
- 46:07desires
- 46:08and we have things that we want, we
- 46:10recognize that God did not set us apart
- 46:13and save us so we could just live for
- 46:15for ourselves and so he could work
- 46:17through us to help others to help the
- 46:20lives of others. And
- 46:23I think
- 46:24I think a lot of even our depression and
- 46:27and and
- 46:28our anxiety and our I'm not I don't know
- 46:31if the word pity, but a lot of us like
- 46:33are in this place where we're like, oh,
- 46:36I [sighs] don't have this yet and I'm
- 46:37preaching cuz I'm one of them.
- 46:40Um, and it's because we're too focused
- 46:43on ourselves. When you realize that
- 46:46even even in your darkness
- 46:49in your moment of darkness that you
- 46:51could be a light to somebody else you
- 46:53recognize, oh my gosh, this is this is
- 46:56the whole point. This is what life is
- 46:58all about. And
- 47:01I think God really
- 47:03walked through that with me and showed
- 47:05me that especially through, you know, my
- 47:07season of singleness. I I was
- 47:11complaining a lot, like, why, you know,
- 47:13you know, just it's okay. Like, we have
- 47:15desires. It's okay to grieve I
- 47:17and it's a beautiful thing that we can
- 47:19be honest, but I felt like God really
- 47:22had walked through with me. There's a
- 47:24bigger purpose. There are things that we
- 47:26don't have and we can sit and we can be
- 47:28we can keep asking why and waste days
- 47:31and months and years,
- 47:33but there are things in a season that
- 47:35God wants to do for us that we're meant
- 47:37to like help other people in that season
- 47:39and you're complaining that you don't
- 47:41have something yet and he's like,
- 47:42because I have you here [clears throat]
- 47:43to serve this person or that person.
- 47:46I'll I'll tell you a quick little story.
- 47:48I mentor this little girl and I just
- 47:50she's been she's become like the joy of
- 47:52my life. I just and I was driving with
- 47:55her. I was driving her home and I look
- 47:57over
- 47:58and about 2 days before I kind of was
- 48:01just questioning like, "Man, you know,
- 48:04I can't believe like my friends are
- 48:05having kids and blah blah." And I look
- 48:07over at her
- 48:09and I see her sleeping in the car, and I
- 48:11just have tears, and I'm just like, "I
- 48:13would never be able to
- 48:16have her right now, mentor her, read the
- 48:19Bible with her. I wouldn't even know her
- 48:21if I had a family."
- 48:23And it's just so crazy how God its
- 48:25timing and what he does and how he
- 48:27ordains people in your life to help.
- 48:30>> Right.
- 48:31>> But we can miss that if we're constantly
- 48:33in complaint of our own lives. And so
- 48:36>> I just encourage everyone while you're
- 48:39in a season of of
- 48:42maybe like
- 48:44struggle right now.
- 48:46Be a blessing to somebody else.
- 48:48Sometimes when you're waiting for God to
- 48:50bring light into your own darkness, he
- 48:53invites you to be a light in somebody
- 48:54else's.
- 48:55>> So true. It's beautiful.
- 48:57>> While you're in your waiting season,
- 48:59while you're especially like go help If
- 49:01you if you are a person that doesn't
- 49:03have kids, especially and you're single,
- 49:06go help kids. That is like
- 49:09>> So true.
- 49:09>> kids, you know? Don't be someone who
- 49:12just walks by someone and and just says,
- 49:14"Oh, you know." Help people, bend down
- 49:16to people, even if it's, "Hey, can I
- 49:18pray for you?" Hold like
- 49:21It's it's the most fulfilling and
- 49:23purposeful thing we can do in this life
- 49:26>> Truly.
- 49:27>> others. That's what he put us here for.
- 49:29He didn't put us here so we could just
- 49:31focus on our own goals. He put us here
- 49:33to to be to be a hand for somebody else.
- 49:36>> Absolutely.
- 49:36>> And I'll read this this scripture in
- 49:38Isaiah 58. If you pour yourself out for
- 49:40the hungry and satisfy the desire of the
- 49:42afflicted, then shall your light rise in
- 49:45the darkness and your gloom be as the
- 49:47noonday. And the Lord will guide you
- 49:49continually and satisfy your desire. And
- 49:52then I just love when he says the least
- 49:54you do for these brothers and sisters
- 49:56you did to me.
- 49:57>> Yeah.
- 49:58>> When you decide to keep walking, when
- 49:59you don't when you decide to not help a
- 50:01person, when you decide to just keep
- 50:03living for yourself, you're doing it to
- 50:05Jesus. Anytime you offer a hand to
- 50:08someone, every time you help a child,
- 50:09every time you help someone in need, you
- 50:12are literally helping Jesus.
- 50:14>> Yeah. I think about my mom would always
- 50:16say like
- 50:18every time my dad would do something for
- 50:22one of the kids, like if he would buy me
- 50:25something or like do something for me,
- 50:27my mom would say
- 50:28it felt like he was doing it for me
- 50:31because I love you more than anything in
- 50:34the world. So it's it's even more for me
- 50:37than it is for you when he does
- 50:38something for you. And it's like
- 50:39literally the same thing with Jesus. We
- 50:41are his. Every person is his. So when we
- 50:44Imagine if you have kids or if maybe you
- 50:46don't, but if you have kids and one day
- 50:48you'll have kids, if somebody is kind to
- 50:51your child, you will feel like they're
- 50:53being kind to you.
- 50:54>> Yeah.
- 50:54>> Someone helps your child like, you know,
- 50:56it's so beautiful and
- 50:57>> That's so true.
- 50:58>> I think just to wrap up this last
- 51:00moment,
- 51:02I love this because James is bringing
- 51:03together two essential aspects of being
- 51:06a Christian.
- 51:08Compassion towards other, compassion
- 51:10towards others, and personal holiness
- 51:13before God.
- 51:13>> Mhm.
- 51:14>> It is so important for us. And obviously
- 51:16the whole Christian walk is not just
- 51:18about not sinning. We know that.
- 51:19>> Mhm.
- 51:20>> We're just going through the book of
- 51:20James right now. And the book of James
- 51:22is like he's just he's honest and and it
- 51:24can be intense at times, but it's good.
- 51:26We need that.
- 51:28Um so it's our holiness and our purity
- 51:30before God and then how we care for
- 51:33others. And I think yeah, I think that's
- 51:35a really really wonderful place to leave
- 51:37off of that. Like you should be
- 51:39compelled and motivated by compassion.
- 51:42Every time Ari and I speak somewhere, my
- 51:44number one prayer is Lord, give me
- 51:47compassion for the people. Don't let
- 51:49this be about me sounding good or being
- 51:51impressive or getting everything right.
- 51:53That's not what it's about. Give me
- 51:55compassion for your people. Jesus
- 51:57Scripture talks about how he was moved
- 51:59by compassion and then he healed
- 52:01everybody who was sick.
- 52:02>> Yeah.
- 52:03>> Um if Jesus was moved by compassion, so
- 52:05should we. So, we love you guys so much.
- 52:08We have gotten through the first chapter
- 52:10of the book of James and we'll be
- 52:11continuing. We love you guys so much. Um
- 52:14go be doers, obeyers, and doers of the
- 52:16word and go help people and be
- 52:18compassionate.
- 52:19>> Yeah. Thank you guys. We love you.
- 52:21>> We love you so much. May the Lord bless
- 52:23you and keep you. May he make his face
- 52:25shine upon you and be gracious to you.
- 52:27May he turn his face towards you and
- 52:29give you peace. Shalom. Shalom. We love
- 52:32you.
