  1. 0:00yeah people only root for those who
  2. 0:02don't need to be rooted
  3. 0:03[Music]
  4. 0:06for and so I just asked them a couple
  5. 0:09questions I was like who here before
  6. 0:11pledging started was like I want to be a
  7. 0:13part of this house the guys were like
  8. 0:15you me okay like okay got it who here
  9. 0:19thought it was going to be easy who here
  10. 0:20thought it would be hard they raised
  11. 0:23their hands I'm like guys this is what
  12. 0:26hard feels like and all of a sudden
  13. 0:28there's just like this big EX in the
  14. 0:30room they're like expectations get reset
  15. 0:33this is normal you wanted this thing you
  16. 0:36expected it to be hard reality now
  17. 0:38matches conditions sorry expectations
  18. 0:40now match conditions this is what heart
  19. 0:43feels like and then all of a sudden it's
  20. 0:45like they got permission to feel shitty
  21. 0:47and by getting permission to feel shitty
  22. 0:48they stop feeling and the next one is
  23. 0:50like what if we confront it and say like
  24. 0:51what if they're right now what cuz a lot
  25. 0:54of I think a lot of effort gets put into
  26. 0:55trying toy deny reality right like
  27. 0:58there's this clip that I shared uh from
  28. 1:00B and he was talking about how he gets
  29. 1:01made fun of for his ears being big right
  30. 1:04and I think it's a really good clip cuz
  31. 1:06his point that he was making um cuz it's
  32. 1:08such a visual easy example for people to
  33. 1:10understand he's like is that it's true I
  34. 1:12do have big ears and and so that's
  35. 1:16that's like the if they're like you have
  36. 1:18no right to be making content are they
  37. 1:21right okay and yeah I'm still going to
  38. 1:25do it anyways because the thing is like
  39. 1:27I one of the things that I had earlier
  40. 1:28on in my career was like
  41. 1:30I didn't think I was a really good
  42. 1:31person like I was like I'm not a good
  43. 1:33person like some people like yeah I just
  44. 1:35had that right and I had a you know
  45. 1:36whatever and one of the things that gave
  46. 1:38me a lot of respite or relief from that
  47. 1:40kind of thought process was like comma
  48. 1:42that's okay because I can still do the
  49. 1:45things that create success and not
  50. 1:48deserve it and still get it and that
  51. 1:50actually felt very powerful for me
  52. 1:51because it was like I don't have to
  53. 1:52deserve to success I can still just do
  54. 1:54the stuff that gets it it's like you
  55. 1:56don't have to you don't have to deserve
  56. 1:57the girl but you can still do the things
  57. 1:58that get her and do deserve it when you
  58. 2:00have her I don't know who knows I hate
  59. 2:02the word deserve to begin with right yes
  60. 2:05but like that concept because also I I
  61. 2:08could segue into like gratitude around
  62. 2:09like if you think you deserve it then
  63. 2:10you don't you don't enjoy it but um that
  64. 2:12has been super powerful for me which is
  65. 2:14like what if they're right and because a
  66. 2:16lot of people just trying to they spend
  67. 2:17so much effort trying to fight the fact
  68. 2:20that the comments might be right this
  69. 2:22might have been a [ __ ] terrible
  70. 2:23thumbnail you know what this might have
  71. 2:25been a boring video this this post might
  72. 2:27have been regurgitated content this post
  73. 2:29might have been inspired too closely by
  74. 2:31someone else's post right what if
  75. 2:33they're right and yeah does it make me a
  76. 2:36piece of [ __ ] what if it does and I hear
  77. 2:38stats like that and I just think man it
  78. 2:41is so easy to win like that I mean like
  79. 2:43when I hear that that's exactly what I
  80. 2:44think I'm just like man if everyone's
  81. 2:46like struggling to win it's like you
  82. 2:49like most of the pain that people
  83. 2:51experience is purely in their own minds
  84. 2:54and so to your point I think there's an
  85. 2:55interesting one between like burnout
  86. 2:57versus hard and so like for me burnout
  87. 3:00is when my I would Define it as my
  88. 3:02output per unit of time decreases so I
  89. 3:05can see that that's measurable right now
  90. 3:08like I can say like number of pages that
  91. 3:09I edit or the quality of the content
  92. 3:11that I create like my output per time
  93. 3:12like the team knows when I like when I'm
  94. 3:14like 6 hours 7 hours into recording
  95. 3:16something they're like I literally start
  96. 3:17like slumping you know like like
  97. 3:19physically I just start like slumping
  98. 3:20and like my Cadence isn't as like I'm
  99. 3:22just not as sharp right there's that
  100. 3:24versus emotional burnout which I think
  101. 3:27people mislabel as burnout out when
  102. 3:30really it's just like they don't know
  103. 3:31how to reframe reality and so what it
  104. 3:33really is is they got a comment on a
  105. 3:35post that bugged them and like again
  106. 3:39it's like pulling it from the Shadows
  107. 3:40it's like no this stuff doesn't work
  108. 3:41it's like hold on what's the one voice
  109. 3:43that actually is coming through what is
  110. 3:45the real thing well there is this
  111. 3:46comment okay great it's embarrassing to
  112. 3:49even have to say that but when you say
  113. 3:50it then you admit it and all of a sudden
  114. 3:51you put it in the light and the shame
  115. 3:53kind of starts to evaporate because then
  116. 3:54you can name it and be like is this
  117. 3:56Comet better than my bigger than my
  118. 3:57future is this Comet bigger than me
  119. 4:00and one of the things that I um that has
  120. 4:02helped me was saying like what's true
  121. 4:05about this you stay in poverty until you
  122. 4:07learn the first lesson of poverty which
  123. 4:09is two words my fault and so when I was
  124. 4:11younger I was really angry at my parents
  125. 4:14like many people are right Justified or
  126. 4:16not doesn't really matter I was very
  127. 4:17angry and I blamed them for the woes of
  128. 4:20my life and I realized when I was 19
  129. 4:23that these people that I hated I was
  130. 4:25giving all the power over the fact that
  131. 4:28I wasn't the person I wanted to be and I
  132. 4:30was like well it's their fault and the
  133. 4:32idea that I had actually given these
  134. 4:34people that I hated Power Over My
  135. 4:38Success was ultimately something that
  136. 4:40made me feel sick to my stomach and was
  137. 4:42what allowed me to point the finger of
  138. 4:44blame inwards and say my fault and then
  139. 4:47at least take ownership over the fact
  140. 4:49that like and like sure maybe your dad
  141. 4:52didn't hug you enough or maybe your mom
  142. 4:53was in PR or whatever it is right it's
  143. 4:55like and and like I said this the other
  144. 4:58day and it'll probably piss off a lot of
  145. 5:00your audience so you know we can put our
  146. 5:02soft ear phones on um like if you were
  147. 5:06if you if you suffered from racial
  148. 5:07inequality if you suffer from gender
  149. 5:09inequality if you suffer from being born
  150. 5:11in Bangladesh if you were ra uh not
  151. 5:13racial sexually abused your entire life
  152. 5:15you would be completely justified in the
  153. 5:17fact that you are not achieving the
  154. 5:18things that other people who didn't have
  155. 5:20those disadvantages have achieved and I
  156. 5:21say this as a white guy who was born in
  157. 5:23America to a doctor father I understand
  158. 5:25that but to the same degree you have the
  159. 5:28opportunity that Chris nor I have which
  160. 5:30is that you can be an inspiration to
  161. 5:31people who just who went through the
  162. 5:32same thing and succeeded comma despite
  163. 5:35those circumstances because I can
  164. 5:36promise that there is somebody who has
  165. 5:37had it worse and has done it better and
  166. 5:39I think that that one single point of
  167. 5:41proof and like there's a global point of
  168. 5:43proof that you can look for for sure but
  169. 5:45like you can be that very local point of
  170. 5:47proof in your community or subc
  171. 5:49community and I think um as soon as we
  172. 5:51shed that that's like I just I'm a big
  173. 5:53fan of uh Power follows the blame finger
  174. 5:56so like wherever you point the blame
  175. 5:57finger is where the power follows so
  176. 5:59it's like if you point it if you point
  177. 6:00it to the government government has the
  178. 6:01power if you point it at your your
  179. 6:02spouse and say like it's their fault
  180. 6:04that I'm I'm not in shape it's their
  181. 6:05fault they never let me do anything it's
  182. 6:07like well you're giving them all the
  183. 6:09power and so it's like until you're like
  184. 6:10it's my fault it's also becomes my
  185. 6:13responsibility what is what if it's not
  186. 6:15your fault it doesn't matter and like I
  187. 6:18can't run marathons because I lost my
  188. 6:20leg at Birth and either you can just
  189. 6:22never try or you put the metal thing on
  190. 6:25and you do it anyways shoot I can't
  191. 6:26remember where it was from um but
  192. 6:29basically that the best art is Art where
  193. 6:31the artist makes it for themselves and
  194. 6:33where you see commercial work is where a
  195. 6:36bunch of people are trying to make
  196. 6:37something for an audience and so it's
  197. 6:39they're trying to like rinse and recycle
  198. 6:40stuff that actually solves no one's
  199. 6:44problems because no one is actually the
  200. 6:45audience whereas when you make it for
  201. 6:47yourself there's thousands of people
  202. 6:48just like you who will Who will have the
  203. 6:51same depth of understanding of it but it
  204. 6:53feels selfish in the moment to make
  205. 6:54something for yourself but when you make
  206. 6:55it for yourself you actually make it for
  207. 6:57every and so I think when you're on the
  208. 6:59start path you can't look at the outcome
  209. 7:02as The only positive cuz you will never
  210. 7:04make it and so the positive frame that
  211. 7:06I've always used is sure you can have
  212. 7:08the external ones of like I like
  213. 7:09thinking about my first videos had like
  214. 7:1113 views and I'm like well if I had an
  215. 7:13audience of 13 people I used to spend
  216. 7:15years pitching you know weight loss
  217. 7:16stuff to rims of 13 and that was fine
  218. 7:18and so thinking about that way was
  219. 7:20helpful but the the most helpful frame
  220. 7:23was thinking about who I was becoming as
  221. 7:26the asset that I was building so in real
  222. 7:29time when whenever I finished a Long
  223. 7:31Day's Work I was becoming more like the
  224. 7:33type of person who could work for 5
  225. 7:35years without reward and that would be
  226. 7:37part of the story I would someday tell
  227. 7:39and some some of the biggest reinforces
  228. 7:42I've had in my life has been
  229. 7:43futurecasting the story that I would
  230. 7:45tell about the shitty period that I was
  231. 7:47in like I remember when I was sleeping
  232. 7:48on the floor at my gym cuz I didn't have
  233. 7:50enough money for two rents and I was
  234. 7:51like I will [ __ ] tell this story and
  235. 7:53when I lost everything for the first
  236. 7:55time I like I have the screenshot of the
  237. 7:58bank account like when I show it people
  238. 7:59are like oh look there's that thing but
  239. 8:00they forget that there was a person who
  240. 8:02screenshotted it to be like this won't
  241. 8:04[ __ ] happen again and I think having
  242. 8:06a larger Narrative of where you're
  243. 8:08ultimately going one gives you the
  244. 8:10vision of where you're like the like
  245. 8:13knows where he's going but it allows the
  246. 8:15dragons that you have to slay along the
  247. 8:17way the hard things that you have to
  248. 8:19overcome to feed into the larger
  249. 8:21Narrative of who of the story that
  250. 8:23you'll someday tell and so like no one
  251. 8:25ever tells stories about the hero who
  252. 8:27made it all happen immediately and had
  253. 8:29no hardships no one cares right like
  254. 8:31okay you were born to a billionaire is
  255. 8:33there a story there not really but
  256. 8:35everyone loves the story because we can
  257. 8:37see ourselves in the character and how
  258. 8:39much we hope to be like them and it's
  259. 8:42the being like them not the having what
  260. 8:44they have that we usually like and so
  261. 8:46reframing ourselves as the hero of that
  262. 8:49narrative in my harder times was what
  263. 8:51really got me through that and thinking
  264. 8:54I will tell this story someday I want to
  265. 8:56give you the single easiest razor to
  266. 8:58predict my behavior and I I said
  267. 9:00whatever will be the most epic story is
  268. 9:03the thing that I will most likely do and
  269. 9:05so often times the most epic story is
  270. 9:06not the shortest outcome to Victory it's
  271. 9:10the long Saga that results in this big
  272. 9:12thing later eventually and I was like if
  273. 9:14you ever want to know if you're like I'm
  274. 9:16not sure what he's going to do in this
  275. 9:17situation just wonder what the most epic
  276. 9:20story to tell would be and that's
  277. 9:21usually what I will do and I don't know
  278. 9:24if that's self-aggrandizing but that's
  279. 9:26that's genuinely my Razor for even
  280. 9:28making the dis the big decisions about
  281. 9:30okay I'm going to sell gym launch I'm
  282. 9:32going to I'm going to marry ilila I'm
  283. 9:34going to slum it and live at the gym I'm
  284. 9:37going to fly around and do turnarounds
  285. 9:38I'm going to start this whole idea of a
  286. 9:40media company that just gives
  287. 9:42exclusively like how do like how do I
  288. 9:45put all these together it's like well
  289. 9:46what would be the most epic story and I
  290. 9:47thought of this idea of just like when I
  291. 9:49think about who that story I want to
  292. 9:50tell is is this billionaire that
  293. 9:53documented the entire thing the whole
  294. 9:56way and just gave because I always I was
  295. 9:59like I wish that Elon Musk and and
  296. 10:01Warren Buffett and all these guys would
  297. 10:03have like and Jeff basos like would have
  298. 10:04just like I would love to have seen
  299. 10:071997 Amazon content and a lot of the
  300. 10:10content in terms of like it it's getting
  301. 10:12five views it's like it's okay because
  302. 10:14when we make it they're going to come
  303. 10:16back and watch this so I don't need them
  304. 10:17to watch it today I want them to know
  305. 10:19that it's here when I do and I think
  306. 10:22that got me out of the the loop of it I
  307. 10:25have to win right now and then every one
  308. 10:27of them is just dropping uh a kernel or
  309. 10:30a bread comom for future meat to refer
  310. 10:31back to it won't get harder like this is
  311. 10:35the hardest part and so if you can just
  312. 10:38make it through this everything else is
  313. 10:40downhill it's not that the things that
  314. 10:42you're the dragons are going to slay
  315. 10:43aren't going to get bigger they are but
  316. 10:44you become so much more equipped to slay
  317. 10:46them back and you have so many more
  318. 10:48allies you have people in the stands
  319. 10:50cheering for you you have the audience
  320. 10:51you have all of these other things that
  321. 10:52are behind you but in the beginning it's
  322. 10:54just you with a stick against a bear and
  323. 10:58argu that fight is a harder fight to win
  324. 11:01than beating a dragon when you have a
  325. 11:03nuclear bomb and Six Nations behind you
  326. 11:06and so it's not even like the the size
  327. 11:08of the hardship it's just also the
  328. 11:10resources and how few of them you have
  329. 11:12and how so much of the beginning is
  330. 11:14literally burning the one thing you have
  331. 11:15which is time because you have no
  332. 11:17leverage you don't have the money to pay
  333. 11:19other people to help you you don't have
  334. 11:21the resources to go like get someone to
  335. 11:23to no one can learn it for you it's like
  336. 11:26there's a lot of the things that that we
  337. 11:28care about a lot like no one can work
  338. 11:30out for you doesn't matter how much
  339. 11:31money you have no one can learn skills
  340. 11:33for you and so in the early days like it
  341. 11:35feels so painful cuz you're like you
  342. 11:37look around to see who can help you and
  343. 11:38then you're like [ __ ] it's me again and
  344. 11:42I think getting comfortable with the
  345. 11:43idea that each of these things kind of
  346. 11:45like Slum Dog Millionaire if you've seen
  347. 11:46that movie where he I'll give you the
  348. 11:48tldr he goes through his entire life of
  349. 11:51Randomness and he gets on Who Wants To
  350. 11:52Be A Millionaire version in India and it
  351. 11:55has 12 questions to make a million
  352. 11:56dollars and from only 12 random
  353. 11:59experiences in his life that seemed
  354. 12:00meaningless at the time was he able to
  355. 12:02answer all of the questions and then
  356. 12:03ultimately win the skills that you
  357. 12:05develop along the way like Steve Jobs
  358. 12:07learning calligraphy that then became
  359. 12:09Apple fonts that you know transformed
  360. 12:11how we type those early days that little
  361. 12:13trench winning in the weeds often times
  362. 12:15gives you these huge advantages later on
  363. 12:17because you have more context than
  364. 12:19anyone else and so rather than lament
  365. 12:21them and hate the fact that you're going
  366. 12:23through it remembering that these will
  367. 12:25be arrows that you put in the quiver
  368. 12:27that you're going to be using to slay
  369. 12:28the future bigger dragons and so
  370. 12:31expecting it to be easy is what makes it
  371. 12:32much harder than it ever is because in
  372. 12:34the early days hard was ooh stop this
  373. 12:37isn't good I should I should this is a
  374. 12:39warning sign this is a red flag I should
  375. 12:40slow down or I should stop you know I
  376. 12:42should pivot but the more I think about
  377. 12:44it as a competitive landscape as I'm
  378. 12:47clear on what this path is supposed to
  379. 12:48look like and these rocks and these
  380. 12:50dragons are things that I'm going to
  381. 12:51have to slay along the way to get the
  382. 12:54princess or get the treasure I get
  383. 12:55happier about the harder it is because I
  384. 12:57know that no one else will follow it's a
  385. 12:59selection effect and I think if you can
  386. 13:01if you can shift from this is hard to no
  387. 13:04one else will be able to do this then it
  388. 13:06it's it flips from being this thing that
  389. 13:07you're like oh poor me to oh poor
  390. 13:09everyone else who's going to have to
  391. 13:10[ __ ] try yeah and I think that is so
  392. 13:12much more motivating as a frame for the
  393. 13:14exact same circumstance like the amount
  394. 13:16of times when I was on my lonely path
  395. 13:19where I was too different from the
  396. 13:22friends that I had but not successful
  397. 13:23enough to be friends with the people
  398. 13:25that I wanted to be friends with that's
  399. 13:26when that's when you want people to root
  400. 13:29for you that's when you want people to
  401. 13:30support you once you've already won
  402. 13:33people are like he's amazing he's so
  403. 13:35good but like that's the time when you
  404. 13:37need it the least and so you always have
  405. 13:40to be the person who roots for you
  406. 13:42before everyone else does and it's
  407. 13:44usually a single clap in the auditorium
  408. 13:47for a very long period of time it is a
  409. 13:50slow clap that's just you rooting for
  410. 13:53you um and that visual I think is one
  411. 13:55that you can kind of take because it is
  412. 13:58people struggle to do things alone and
  413. 14:00the path of the exceptional person is
  414. 14:03one of an exception which means that you
  415. 14:05are not with other people and rather
  416. 14:08than fighting that or bemoaning it see
  417. 14:11it as an indicator that you're on the
  418. 14:13right path because if everyone else were
  419. 14:15cheering you on then it means you're not
  420. 14:17in the right place because it means
  421. 14:18you're just like everyone else and
  422. 14:20that's not where you want to be
