- 0:06well douglas murray
- 0:08he's a renaissance man quite frankly
- 0:10he's a best-selling author
- 0:13he's an award-winning journalist he's
- 0:16based in britain
- 0:18he's the associate editor of the
- 0:20spectator
- 0:22and he is written regularly for
- 0:24publications like the wall street
- 0:25journal which i read cover to cover
- 0:27every single day the times the national
- 0:29review
- 0:30his books include a really significant
- 0:33book titled the strange death of europe
- 0:37and i would say incidentally or maybe
- 0:39not incidentally that this book was
- 0:41almost 20 weeks
- 0:42on the sunday times bestseller list and
- 0:45was the
- 0:46number one bestseller in non-fiction
- 0:49that's an
- 0:50incredible barrier to overcome to become
- 0:53number one
- 0:54in non-fiction and his latest book and
- 0:57that's the book that i want to spend
- 0:58most of my time on today
- 1:00is titled the madness of crowd's gender
- 1:03race identity and i want to start the
- 1:07discussion with
- 1:08douglas murray on that very subject
- 1:11douglas
- 1:12it is wonderful to have you on hank
- 1:14unplugged
- 1:16what is a great pleasure to be with you
- 1:17thank you i want to start out with that
- 1:20first
- 1:20chapter in which you write about how
- 1:24rapidly perspectives on marriage
- 1:27are changing and one of the
- 1:29illustrations
- 1:31that you underscore in this chapter is
- 1:34the idea of same-sex marriage
- 1:37so you have hillary clinton
- 1:40back at the time that her husband was
- 1:43proffering the defense of marriage act
- 1:45she was standing behind that lockstep
- 1:49with her husband
- 1:50then when she ran for office in 2016
- 1:55she was standing diametrically opposed
- 1:58to this and i suppose that underscores
- 2:02how
- 2:02rapidly our culture is transitioning
- 2:06and how if you have happened to say
- 2:09something
- 2:09in the past even if that past is fairly
- 2:13recent
- 2:14you have a trip wire there that can blow
- 2:16you up pretty quickly
- 2:18yes that's right i give the example of
- 2:20joy reid who
- 2:21was found a couple years ago to have
- 2:24done a tweet
- 2:2510 years earlier in which she had
- 2:27expressed
- 2:28her reservations about gay marriage and
- 2:31um
- 2:31at the time she tweeted that that was
- 2:33quite a comment it was quite common to
- 2:34be
- 2:34you know not in favor of gay marriage
- 2:36and it was just very interesting that
- 2:38within a decade this was enough to put
- 2:40her career in serious peril
- 2:42and what i'm interested in about this
- 2:44really is
- 2:45it's a very good signal of the speed at
- 2:48which
- 2:49we are shifting our views by the way i
- 2:51happen to be in favor of
- 2:53gay marriage in the civil context
- 2:56and what i say is and what i think i
- 2:58mentioned in that chapter is
- 2:59there's a very interesting boot on the
- 3:01other foot test here because
- 3:04if it is the case and i give an example
- 3:06of an event i attended a christian event
- 3:08in london
- 3:09which was basically hounded out of the
- 3:11venues it was trying to
- 3:12organize in if we end up in a situation
- 3:15of saying
- 3:17that people who are not in favor of gay
- 3:19marriage which includes as i say
- 3:22most people until very recently if
- 3:25in this era it becomes impermissible to
- 3:28hold a view that was held
- 3:30very commonly until yesterday we are
- 3:33doing something very dangerous
- 3:34we are doing actually something
- 3:36profoundly illiberal
- 3:38and we are saying that the
- 3:41amores of our time happen to have
- 3:43changed
- 3:44very radically on a set of things
- 3:46whether for the good or for the worse is
- 3:48in people's own views
- 3:49but that as they change we will be
- 3:51totally unforgiving
- 3:53of anyone who doesn't come along
- 3:55lockstep with it 100 of the way
- 3:57that as i say is a profoundly liberal
- 3:59thing it is not the
- 4:01job for instance of rights campaigners
- 4:04of any kind writers or anyone else
- 4:06to tell congregations or leadership of
- 4:09churches and other religious
- 4:10institutions
- 4:12to go along with views that those
- 4:14institutions
- 4:15do not and in many cases cannot hold
- 4:19and i as i say i give the gay marriage
- 4:21one because it's a fascinating window
- 4:24into this
- 4:25the unforgivingness of our time
- 4:28the unwillingness to allow a variety
- 4:31of genuinely various and dissenting
- 4:34opinion
- 4:35and the desire effectively just to jump
- 4:37orthodoxies
- 4:39where yesterday we had one today we'll
- 4:41have a new one
- 4:42and woe but hide you if you're not on
- 4:44the right side today
- 5:07you
