  1. 0:04let's continue the discussion with a
  2. 0:05topic why the future does not need us
  3. 0:08for this topic we're going to evaluate
  4. 0:10contemporary human experience to
  5. 0:13strengthen the human person functioning
  6. 0:15in society we're going to discuss the
  7. 0:17importance of human rights in the face
  8. 0:19of changing social conditions and
  9. 0:21technological development
  10. 0:24the former chief scientist and corporate
  11. 0:26executive officer of sun microsystems
  12. 0:28william nelson bill joy wrote an essay
  13. 0:31entitled why the future doesn't need us
  14. 0:34the implied message in his essay is that
  15. 0:37with the rate and direction our
  16. 0:38technology is growing and developing
  17. 0:41time will come when humans will become
  18. 0:42unnecessary and machines will be able to
  19. 0:45do the activities without humans
  20. 0:48according to him our most powerful 21st
  21. 0:50century technologies such as robotics
  22. 0:53genetic engineering and nanotech are
  23. 0:56threatening to make humans an endangered
  24. 0:58species
  25. 0:59genetics is the branch of biology that
  26. 1:01deals with the study of genes genetic
  27. 1:04variation and heredity in organisms it
  28. 1:07deals with our dna chromosomes and the
  29. 1:09genetic
  30. 1:10materials on the other hand
  31. 1:13nanotechnology is the field of research
  32. 1:15and innovation concerned with building
  33. 1:17objects in the nano scale and when i say
  34. 1:20nano scale there is one billionth of a
  35. 1:22meter
  36. 1:24robotics on the other hand is a branch
  37. 1:26of engineering that involves a
  38. 1:28conception design manufacture and
  39. 1:31operation of robots this is actually
  40. 1:33overlapping with electronics computer
  41. 1:35science artificial intelligence
  42. 1:38mechatronics nanotechnology and
  43. 1:40bioengineering
  44. 1:42with genetics nanotechnology and
  45. 1:45robotics being accessible to small
  46. 1:47groups with little and less funding it
  47. 1:50makes it prone to accidents and abuses
  48. 1:52with this kind of scenario there would
  49. 1:54be less of a balance and check with the
  50. 1:57use of this genetic engineering
  51. 1:59nanotechnology and robotics
  52. 2:02because of this advancement in
  53. 2:04development in technology there is what
  54. 2:06we call the rise of the machines
  55. 2:08the rise of the machines may render
  56. 2:10humans useless
  57. 2:11the manual labor will be gradually
  58. 2:13replaced by machinery and the computers
  59. 2:16will become more sophisticated
  60. 2:18also with the development of artificial
  61. 2:20intelligence or ei the robots that will
  62. 2:23be created may eventually act and decide
  63. 2:25like humans
  64. 2:26the main issue or question is
  65. 2:29can we prevent a future with machines as
  66. 2:31masters
  67. 2:32also
  68. 2:33what dimension should we examine
  69. 2:36in terms of these dimensions we have to
  70. 2:39look at the societal benefit the
  71. 2:41potential job displacement or basically
  72. 2:43the unemployment the degree of
  73. 2:45collaboration among humans being
  74. 2:47fostered as well as the impact of these
  75. 2:50robotics to the global climate
  76. 2:52in terms of societal benefits the
  77. 2:54automation and mechanization of work
  78. 2:57will lead to consistency of processes
  79. 3:00which later on will reduce the labor
  80. 3:01expenses
  81. 3:03also this will lead to consistency of
  82. 3:05outputs thus we're going to have better
  83. 3:08predictability of the quality of
  84. 3:10products or services
  85. 3:12with the growing application of robotics
  86. 3:15and with technology becoming more
  87. 3:16complicated and sophisticated
  88. 3:18new categories of jobs arise to succeed
  89. 3:21in these upcoming events or situations
  90. 3:24we need to change how we innovate in
  91. 3:26other words we need to learn new skills
  92. 3:29to be able to become competent but the
  93. 3:32problem is how about our rights
  94. 3:34according to article 23 of the universal
  95. 3:36declaration of human rights everyone has
  96. 3:39a right to work to free choice of
  97. 3:41employment to adjust and favorable
  98. 3:43conditions of work and protection
  99. 3:45against unemployment
  100. 3:47but if for going to be replaced by these
  101. 3:49robots in the future then how about this
  102. 3:52right
  103. 3:53so the question is
  104. 3:54how do we protect our human rights in
  105. 3:56the face of technological advancement
  106. 3:58and ethical dilemmas
