Why Spiritually Awakened People Look Younger Than Their Age — Carl Jung — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:04There is something strange [music] that
- 0:05happens when you spend time around a
- 0:06person who has truly awakened
- 0:08spiritually. [music]
- 0:10Something you notice before you can
- 0:12explain it, before any conversation
- 0:14begins, before anything meaningful is
- 0:16exchanged.
- 0:18They look younger than they should.
- 0:20Not younger the way cosmetics create the
- 0:22illusion of youth.
- 0:24>> [music]
- 0:24>> Younger in a way that sits beneath the
- 0:26skin.
- 0:27In the eyes.
- 0:29In the way they hold their body.
- 0:31In the quality of their stillness.
- 0:32[music]
- 0:34You look at them and something in your
- 0:35mind quietly miscalculates their age.
- 0:39You assume late 30s and discover they're
- 0:4152.
- 0:43You assume mid-40s and learn [music]
- 0:45they're 61.
- 0:47And the strange part is that these are
- 0:48often people who have lived through
- 0:50enormous difficulty, [music]
- 0:52loss, betrayal, health crises, long
- 0:55periods of psychological suffering.
- 0:58More in many cases than the people
- 1:00around them who look years older. Carl
- 1:02Jung noticed this.
- 1:04He spent decades working with patients
- 1:06at every stage of psychological
- 1:08development, and among the things he
- 1:09documented was this quiet, persistent
- 1:12phenomenon.
- 1:14People who moved through genuine
- 1:15spiritual awakening carried a different
- 1:17quality of vitality in their physical
- 1:19[music] appearance.
- 1:21Not explained by genetics, not explained
- 1:24by lifestyle alone.
- 1:26Something more fundamental was
- 1:27happening.
- 1:30And when Jung traced it back to its
- 1:31source,
- 1:32>> [music]
- 1:32>> what he found disturbs the comfortable
- 1:34story most people tell themselves about
- 1:36what aging actually is. Because most of
- 1:39us believe aging is simply time passing
- 1:41through the body.
- 1:42We believe wrinkles are years, that gray
- 1:45hair is experience, that the heaviness
- 1:47people carry in their face by the time
- 1:48[music] they reach middle age is just
- 1:50the natural price of living.
- 1:53But Jung's clinical observations pointed
- 1:55towards something entirely different.
- 1:57He believed that a significant portion
- 1:59of what we call aging is not time at
- 2:01all.
- 2:02It is accumulation.
- 2:04It is the weight of everything we
- 2:05refused to feel.
- 2:07>> [music]
- 2:07>> Everything we carried for people who
- 2:08never asked us to. Every version of
- 2:11ourselves we abandoned to survive. Every
- 2:13truth we suppressed to maintain peace in
- 2:15systems that were slowly consuming us.
- 2:18And the moment a person begins releasing
- 2:19that accumulation through genuine
- 2:21psychological awakening, something
- 2:23[music] begins to reverse. Not in the
- 2:25way people imagine.
- 2:27Not through some mystical fountain of
- 2:28youth.
- 2:29But through a real measurable shift in
- 2:31how the nervous system operates. How the
- 2:33face holds tension.
- 2:35How the body moves when it is no longer
- 2:37bracing against its own truth.
- 2:40The spiritually awakened person looks
- 2:42younger because they have put down
- 2:44something enormous.
- 2:45Something most people carry until the
- 2:47very end without realizing they were
- 2:49holding it at all. Before we understand
- 2:51what they put down, we need to
- 2:53understand what most people are
- 2:54carrying. Young observed that the
- 2:56average person moves through adult life
- 2:58in a state of profound psychological
- 3:00compression.
- 3:02Not because they chose this. Because the
- 3:04world around them required it from an
- 3:06early age.
- 3:07You learned quickly that certain
- 3:09emotions were acceptable and others were
- 3:11not.
- 3:12Certain versions of you were welcomed at
- 3:13the dinner table, praised at school,
- 3:16rewarded in relationships.
- 3:18Other versions, the angry you, the
- 3:21frightened you, the deeply uncertain
- 3:23you.
- 3:24The you that simply wanted to stop
- 3:26performing.
- 3:27Those versions were quietly discouraged
- 3:29until they disappeared underground.
- 3:31Young called what accumulated down there
- 3:34the shadow.
- 3:35Not evil, not dangerous in itself.
- 3:38Simply everything the conscious mind
- 3:40refused to own.
- 3:41All the feelings that had nowhere safe
- 3:43to go. All the needs that were never
- 3:45allowed to be needs. All the grief that
- 3:48was interrupted before it could complete
- 3:49itself. And while the conscious mind
- 3:51carried on with ordinary life, the
- 3:53shadow grew heavier. Every year of not
- 3:56feeling [music] what needed to be felt
- 3:58added weight. Not metaphorical weight,
- 4:00real neurological weight. The kind that
- 4:04changes how the muscles in your face
- 4:05hold. The kind that alters the quality
- 4:07of your breath. The kind that affects
- 4:09the hormonal environment inside your
- 4:11body in ways that accumulate across
- 4:14decades. [music]
- 4:15Jung noticed that his patients who
- 4:16hadn't done this inner work, who were
- 4:18still carrying decades of unprocessed
- 4:20emotional material, carried it visibly.
- 4:23Not always in obvious ways,
- 4:26but in the set of their jaw, in the
- 4:27tension around their eyes,
- 4:29in the slight forward collapse of the
- 4:31shoulders that comes from spending years
- 4:33bracing against an interior world that
- 4:35feels unsafe.
- 4:37Their bodies were doing something
- 4:38extraordinary [music]
- 4:39and exhausting.
- 4:41They were working constantly to contain
- 4:43what had never been processed.
- 4:45To keep the lid on what had never been
- 4:47allowed to surface.
- 4:49And that containment sustained across
- 4:51years and then decades leaves marks that
- 4:53no skin care routine touches. Because
- 4:56the marks aren't on the surface. They're
- 4:58structural.
- 4:59They live in the nervous system. They
- 5:01live in the baseline level of cortisol
- 5:03the body maintains when a person is
- 5:05unconsciously at war with themselves.
- 5:09They live in the chronic low-grade
- 5:11tension that becomes so familiar it
- 5:13stops feeling like tension and simply
- 5:15starts feeling like who you [music] are.
- 5:18This is what most people are carrying by
- 5:20the time they reach their 40s [music]
- 5:22and 50s. Not years, not experiences.
- 5:26Compressed, unresolved psychological
- 5:29weight. And now here is where something
- 5:31important shifts.
- 5:33Because the spiritually awakened person,
- 5:37the one who stops people in their tracks
- 5:39with how young they appear for their
- 5:40age,
- 5:42that person has typically lived through
- 5:44more difficulty, not [music] less.
- 5:47They have often experienced loss that
- 5:49broke them open,
- 5:50betrayal that shattered their operating
- 5:52assumptions about the world,
- 5:55periods of psychological darkness that
- 5:57lasted not weeks, but years.
- 6:00If anything, the events of their life
- 6:02would seem to justify looking older than
- 6:05their age.
- 6:06And yet, the opposite is true. Why?
- 6:10Jung's answer to this question is what
- 6:12changed everything [music] about what I
- 6:14thought I understood about aging.
- 6:17He believed that it is not the
- 6:18difficulty that ages a person.
- 6:21It is the resistance to difficulty.
- 6:23It is the suppression of what difficulty
- 6:26asks you to feel.
- 6:28The person who moves through genuine
- 6:30spiritual awakening has at some point
- 6:33stopped resisting.
- 6:35They have learned, often through
- 6:37enormous suffering, to feel what is
- 6:39actually there instead of managing what
- 6:42they don't want to be there.
- 6:45And that single shift from resistance to
- 6:47allowance, [music]
- 6:49from suppression to integration, begins
- 6:52releasing the accumulated weight that
- 6:54was written onto the face, into the
- 6:56body, through the nervous system.
- 6:58[music] The process is not comfortable.
- 7:01Jung was very clear about this.
- 7:04Genuine spiritual awakening is not the
- 7:06peaceful, serene experience [music] the
- 7:08wellness industry tends to describe.
- 7:11It is often difficult in ways people
- 7:13[music] don't anticipate. It forces
- 7:15encounters with everything the person
- 7:17has been running from,
- 7:19the grief they never completed, the
- 7:21anger they never allowed themselves to
- 7:23feel without guilt,
- 7:25the shame that was assigned to them
- 7:27before they had any capacity to evaluate
- 7:30whether it actually belonged to them.
- 7:32This confrontation, which Jung placed at
- 7:34the center of what he called
- 7:35individuation,
- 7:37the lifelong process of becoming
- 7:38psychologically whole,
- 7:41this confrontation is where the real
- 7:42reversal begins.
- 7:44Because when a person finally feels the
- 7:46grief they have been holding for 20
- 7:48years, [music]
- 7:49something releases.
- 7:51Not just emotionally, physiologically.
- 7:54The jaw unclenches that has been
- 7:56clenched so long the person stopped
- 7:58noticing.
- 8:00The breath drops deeper into the body
- 8:02than it has in years.
- 8:04The muscles around the eyes, which have
- 8:06been subtly braced against unwanted
- 8:07perception, begin to soften. [music]
- 8:10The nervous system, which has been
- 8:12running a constant background program of
- 8:14containment and management and
- 8:15suppression, receives a signal it may
- 8:18have been waiting years for. Something
- 8:20is safe now.
- 8:22You don't have to hold this anymore.
- 8:23[music]
- 8:24And what follows is something that
- 8:25everyone around the awakening person
- 8:27notices before the awakening person
- 8:29themselves understands what is
- 8:31happening.
- 8:33They begin to look different.
- 8:35Not younger in a manufactured way.
- 8:38Younger in a way that registers as
- 8:40fundamentally more alive. If this is
- 8:43reaching something in you, something you
- 8:45felt but never had language for,
- 8:47stay with it.
- 8:49Because what Young documented goes even
- 8:51deeper than this. There is [music] a
- 8:53specific mechanism behind the physical
- 8:55change that most people never
- 8:56understand.
- 8:58And it begins not with what the
- 8:59spiritually awakened person starts
- 9:01doing,
- 9:03but with what they stop doing. What the
- 9:05awakening person stops doing is
- 9:07performing. [music]
- 9:08This sounds simple, but the actual
- 9:10weight of performance sustained across
- 9:11decades is something most people have
- 9:13never fully calculated.
- 9:16Consider how much energy goes into
- 9:18maintaining a version of yourself that
- 9:19was constructed to be acceptable.
- 9:22To be safe.
- 9:24To not threaten the comfort of the
- 9:25people around [music] you.
- 9:27You learned early which parts of you
- 9:29were welcome and which were not. And
- 9:31over time, you built a presentation.
- 9:34Not dishonestly in any deliberate way,
- 9:36but automatically.
- 9:38The way children build presentations
- 9:40when the alternative is rejection,
- 9:41abandonment, or punishment. Jung called
- 9:44this the persona.
- 9:46The mask [music] that allows social life
- 9:48to function.
- 9:49And there is nothing wrong with having
- 9:51one.
- 9:52The problem is what happens when the
- 9:53persona and the actual self diverge so
- 9:56far that the person has forgotten which
- 9:59one is real. When you spend years
- 10:01maintaining a version of yourself that
- 10:02doesn't match your interior reality,
- 10:05the disconnect requires constant energy
- 10:07to sustain.
- 10:09You have to monitor your words before
- 10:11they emerge. You have to soften
- 10:13reactions that feel too large. You have
- 10:15to amplify enthusiasm you don't actually
- 10:18feel.
- 10:19You have to suppress the fatigue, the
- 10:21doubt, the complexity that lies beneath
- 10:23the surface presentation.
- 10:25Every one of these micro-adjustments
- 10:27happening dozens or hundreds of times
- 10:29per day has a physiological cost.
- 10:32It maintains a low level of stress
- 10:34activation in the nervous system that
- 10:36never fully switches off.
- 10:38And stress activation sustained long
- 10:40enough does something very specific to
- 10:42the face and body. It ages [music] them.
- 10:45Because the stress response system is
- 10:47not designed to be permanently on.
- 10:50It is designed for acute threat, a short
- 10:52burst of activation, and then recovery.
- 10:55When it becomes a baseline state, a
- 10:57permanent low hum beneath ordinary life,
- 11:00the body begins to show the wear.
- 11:02Not dramatically, not all at once, year
- 11:05by year, in small increments that
- 11:07eventually add up to a face that looks
- 11:09tired in ways sleep no longer fixes. The
- 11:12spiritually awakened person has at some
- 11:14point put down the performance.
- 11:15>> [music]
- 11:16>> Not all at once, usually through a
- 11:18crisis that made the performance
- 11:19impossible to maintain, through a
- 11:21breaking point where something in them
- 11:23simply refused to keep [music]
- 11:25pretending.
- 11:27And the moment the pretending stops, the
- 11:29energy that that consumed by maintaining
- 11:31it becomes available again.
- 11:34The nervous system receives the signal
- 11:36that the threat has passed.
- 11:37>> [music]
- 11:38>> Not an external threat, but the internal
- 11:40threat of being known for what [music]
- 11:42you actually are.
- 11:44And when that signal lands, when the
- 11:46body finally believes it is safe to stop
- 11:48[music] bracing,
- 11:50the face changes. Not in a day,
- 11:53but over months, [music] the person
- 11:54begins looking different. More present,
- 11:57more open, more alive.
- 12:00Less like someone managing an interior
- 12:02situation, more like someone who has
- 12:04arrived at a place where managing is no
- 12:06longer necessary. This is what people
- 12:08are seeing when they look at a
- 12:09spiritually awakened person and misjudge
- 12:11their age.
- 12:12>> [music]
- 12:13>> They're seeing a face that is no longer
- 12:15holding anything in reserve.
- 12:17Jung observed that this quality is
- 12:19almost impossible to fake. You can
- 12:21appear younger temporarily through
- 12:23various interventions, [music]
- 12:25but the specific quality of aliveness
- 12:27that comes from genuine psychological
- 12:29integration, that cannot be
- 12:31manufactured.
- 12:32Because it is not about the surface, it
- 12:34is about what the surface is no longer
- 12:36required to contain. But there is
- 12:38another layer to this that goes even
- 12:40deeper, and it is the layer that most
- 12:42people miss entirely. [music]
- 12:44It has to do not just with what the
- 12:46awakened person releases,
- 12:48but with what they reclaim. [music]
- 12:50Jung understood something about the
- 12:51people who had moved through genuine
- 12:53individuation.
- 12:55They had reclaimed parts of themselves
- 12:57that had been underground for years,
- 12:58[music] sometimes decades.
- 13:01The sensitivity they had been told was
- 13:03weakness.
- 13:04The capacity [music] for joy they had
- 13:05suppressed because it felt unsafe to
- 13:08need good things.
- 13:09The creativity they had abandoned when
- 13:11survival became more urgent than
- 13:13self-expression.
- 13:15The anger they had been taught to feel
- 13:17ashamed of, which was actually the
- 13:19healthy signal that their boundaries
- 13:20were being violated. These qualities,
- 13:22when they have been underground for
- 13:24years, are not dead. They are dormant.
- 13:27And when the awakening process brings
- 13:29them back into consciousness, the person
- 13:31doesn't just feel more whole
- 13:32psychologically.
- 13:34They look more whole physically.
- 13:37Because these qualities carry energy.
- 13:39Real biological energy.
- 13:42The kind that shows up in the eyes as
- 13:43brightness, [music]
- 13:44in movement as ease, in the face as a
- 13:47quality of presence that communicates
- 13:49without words that someone is genuinely
- 13:51here. Most people by middle age have
- 13:53suppressed enough of their authentic
- 13:55self that a significant portion of their
- 13:57vital energy is perpetually consumed by
- 13:59the act of suppression itself. [music]
- 14:02The awakened person has stopped
- 14:04suppressing.
- 14:05All that energy which was previously
- 14:07tied up in the maintenance of what Jung
- 14:09called the false self becomes available
- 14:11for actual living.
- 14:13And actual living, as opposed to the
- 14:15management and performance of living,
- 14:17looks completely different from the
- 14:18outside. You know this intuitively. You
- 14:21have seen it.
- 14:23You have been in rooms with people whose
- 14:24vitality is somehow contagious, who seem
- 14:27to have reserves of energy [music]
- 14:29that don't make logical sense given
- 14:31their age or circumstances.
- 14:33And you have been in rooms with people
- 14:35who drain the air around them,
- 14:37who seem exhausted at a level that has
- 14:39nothing to do with sleep deprivation.
- 14:43Jung's insight was that the difference
- 14:45is almost never about what has happened
- 14:47to these people. [music]
- 14:48It is almost always about what they are
- 14:50still carrying.
- 14:52Or have finally put down. There is a
- 14:55third dimension to this that Jung
- 14:57documented in his later work.
- 14:59And it is perhaps [music] the most
- 15:00counterintuitive of all.
- 15:02It concerns the relationship between
- 15:04spiritual awakening
- 15:06>> [music]
- 15:06>> and time. Most people have a very
- 15:08specific relationship with time that
- 15:10they are not consciously aware of.
- 15:12They live psychologically across all of
- 15:14it simultaneously.
- 15:16They carry the unresolved grief from 20
- 15:18years ago as if it is present. They
- 15:21carry anticipatory anxiety about futures
- 15:23that may never arrive as if those
- 15:25futures are already here.
- 15:28They carry resentments that are
- 15:29functionally decades old in their
- 15:31nervous systems as if the original wound
- 15:33was inflicted this morning. This
- 15:35psychological time scattering is
- 15:37exhausting in a way that accumulates
- 15:38physically.
- 15:40Because the nervous system cannot
- 15:41distinguish between a threat that is
- 15:43happening now and a threat that is being
- 15:45vividly re-experienced through memory.
- 15:48Every time the unresolved past is
- 15:50activated, the body responds as if the
- 15:53original event is occurring again.
- 15:56Every time the feared future is
- 15:57rehearsed in vivid detail, the body
- 16:00generates the stress [music] chemistry
- 16:01of an event that hasn't happened yet.
- 16:05And across years of this, the body ages
- 16:07in ways [music] that have very little to
- 16:09do with actual chronological time. The
- 16:12spiritually awakened person, through the
- 16:14process of genuine inner work, has
- 16:16developed a relationship with time that
- 16:18looks almost nothing like this.
- 16:21Not because they have escaped their past
- 16:23or become immune to concern about the
- 16:25future,
- 16:26but because they have learned through
- 16:28repeated practice and hard experience to
- 16:31return to the present moment,
- 16:32>> [music]
- 16:33>> to this breath,
- 16:34this room,
- 16:36this body
- 16:38right now. Young observed that the
- 16:39people who had moved through
- 16:41individuation had developed what he
- 16:43called a stable center. [music]
- 16:46A place within themselves from which
- 16:47they could observe both past and future
- 16:50without being consumed by either.
- 16:53This stable center is not a spiritual
- 16:55concept in the mystical sense. It has
- 16:58very real neurobiological correlates.
- 17:01When a person is consistently able to
- 17:03return to present moment experience
- 17:05[music] rather than being pulled into
- 17:07psychological time travel, the nervous
- 17:10system operates differently.
- 17:12The baseline stress activation drops.
- 17:15The quality of sleep changes. The
- 17:17physiological markers of aging slow in
- 17:20measurable ways, and the face reflects
- 17:23this. A person who lives primarily in
- 17:25the present looks different from a
- 17:26person who is living simultaneously in
- 17:29three different time zones of
- 17:30psychological experience. [music]
- 17:33There is a groundedness that shows up in
- 17:35the body.
- 17:37A quality of not being pulled somewhere
- 17:39else, even when standing right in front
- 17:41of you.
- 17:43People sometimes describe this in ways
- 17:45they can't quite articulate.
- 17:47They say the awakened person seems very
- 17:49still inside,
- 17:51>> [music]
- 17:51>> very here.
- 17:54As if they are not distracted by
- 17:55something internal the way most people
- 17:57are. They are right.
- 17:59And that stillness, that quality of
- 18:01genuine presence, is physiologically
- 18:03younger than the chronic state of
- 18:05internal distraction that most people
- 18:08live in by default. If you're noticing
- 18:10something in the people around you that
- 18:11aligns with this,
- 18:13>> [music]
- 18:13>> you're already further along in this
- 18:15understanding than most people ever get.
- 18:18Leave a comment with the word present if
- 18:20this is landing. Jung also documented
- 18:22something about how spiritually awakened
- 18:25people relate to their own emotions that
- 18:27contributes directly to this phenomenon.
- 18:29And it is almost the opposite of what
- 18:31popular culture suggests emotional
- 18:33health looks like. Most people either
- 18:35suppress their emotions, pushing them
- 18:37underground to avoid disruption,
- 18:39or overwhelmed by them, swept away in
- 18:42feelings that seem to have no edges.
- 18:45The awakened person who has moved
- 18:47through genuine psychological work has
- 18:49developed something different.
- 18:51The ability to feel fully without being
- 18:54destroyed by feeling. This sounds
- 18:56[music] small. It is not. When you can
- 18:58feel grief completely, let it move
- 19:00through you in its full weight without
- 19:02needing to stop it or escape it, the
- 19:04grief completes itself.
- 19:07Jung called this the natural arc of
- 19:09emotion.
- 19:10Every emotion, if allowed to move
- 19:13without interruption, has a beginning, a
- 19:15peak, and a resolution. [music]
- 19:18Not a pleasant resolution necessarily,
- 19:20but a completion.
- 19:22And completion releases the energy that
- 19:24was being held in the unfinished
- 19:26feeling. Most people never experience
- 19:28emotional completion.
- 19:29They interrupt their emotions at various
- 19:31stages because the full experience feels
- 19:33too threatening.
- 19:35They suppress before the feeling can
- 19:36build.
- 19:37>> [music]
- 19:37>> They manage when it peaks. They distract
- 19:40before it can resolve. And so the
- 19:42emotion doesn't complete.
- 19:44It stays in the system partly activated,
- 19:46pulling on resources indefinitely. The
- 19:49awakened person has learned, [music]
- 19:50often through suffering that made
- 19:52suppression impossible, to let the arc
- 19:55complete.
- 19:56And the body that regularly completes
- 19:58its emotional cycles is a body that is
- 20:01not chronically storing unfinished
- 20:03experiences. [music]
- 20:05It is a body that releases.
- 20:07And bodies that release consistently
- 20:09look and function differently from
- 20:11bodies that accumulate. The face that
- 20:13has learned to feel fully is softer than
- 20:16the face that has learned to contain.
- 20:19The eyes that have cried when crying was
- 20:21needed are clearer than the eyes that
- 20:23have held everything in reserve.
- 20:26The breath that has expanded in grief
- 20:28and contracted in fear and deepened
- 20:30[music] in genuine joy is a breath that
- 20:33has moved.
- 20:34And breath that has moved keeps the body
- 20:37younger in ways that cannot easily be
- 20:39replicated by any intervention that
- 20:42doesn't address the underlying
- 20:44suppression. But there is one more
- 20:45dimension to this that Young explored in
- 20:47his work on meaning.
- 20:49And this may be the most powerful of
- 20:51all. He observed that the people who
- 20:53aged most visibly, who looked years
- 20:56older than their chronological age by
- 20:58the time they reached midlife, were
- 21:00often not the people who had experienced
- 21:02the most hardship.
- 21:04They were the people who who living
- 21:05without a sense of genuine meaning,
- 21:08who had constructed lives that were
- 21:10externally coherent but internally
- 21:12hollow,
- 21:14who had accumulated the things society
- 21:16defined as success without ever asking
- 21:18whether those things actually
- 21:20corresponded to who [music] they were.
- 21:22Young believed that the deepest source
- 21:23of vitality in a human being was not
- 21:25physical. It was the experience of
- 21:28living in genuine alignment with one's
- 21:30authentic nature.
- 21:32He called this living from the self with
- 21:34a capital S
- 21:36as distinct from the ego-constructed
- 21:38version of identity that most people
- 21:39inhabit. When a person is living from
- 21:41the self, genuinely expressing what they
- 21:44are, rather than performing what they
- 21:46believe will be accepted, [music]
- 21:48the entire system operates differently.
- 21:51There is no internal friction consuming
- 21:53energy.
- 21:54There is no gap between who you are and
- 21:57who you are pretending to be.
- 21:59The energy that would have been consumed
- 22:01by the maintenance of that gap becomes
- 22:03available for everything else, including
- 22:06repair, including regeneration,
- 22:09including the basic biological processes
- 22:11that operate differently in a body that
- 22:14is not chronically managing an internal
- 22:16contradiction. Young observed that the
- 22:18awakened patients who had moved into
- 22:20genuine alignment with their authentic
- 22:22nature, who had found work that
- 22:24expressed rather than suppressed what
- 22:26they were,
- 22:28who had released relationships that
- 22:30required them to be less than what they
- 22:31were,
- 22:32who had stopped pursuing goals that
- 22:34someone else had decided were
- 22:35appropriate for them,
- 22:37these patients carried a vitality that
- 22:39was almost inexplicable from the
- 22:41outside.
- 22:43They had often simplified their lives
- 22:45dramatically, removed enormous amounts
- 22:48of what they had previously been
- 22:49chasing,
- 22:50>> [music]
- 22:50>> and yet they seemed more alive than
- 22:52before. Not despite the simplification,
- 22:56because of it. Because living simply in
- 22:58alignment is metabolically different
- 23:00from living elaborately in
- 23:01contradiction.
- 23:04The face that is not performing relaxes.
- 23:07The body that is not bracing settles.
- 23:10The nervous system that is not
- 23:11maintaining a split between inner
- 23:13reality and outer presentation finally
- 23:15gets to function as it was designed to
- 23:17function.
- 23:20And all of that collectively registers
- 23:22in a way that other people perceive as
- 23:24youth. [music]
- 23:26Without being able to explain exactly
- 23:28what they are seeing, because they are
- 23:30not seeing a technique.
- 23:32They are seeing the absence of an
- 23:34enormous invisible effort.
- 23:36The effort of not being what you
- 23:38actually are. What you are beginning to
- 23:40understand now is why this is not
- 23:42primarily about spiritual practices or
- 23:45rituals or anything external.
- 23:48It is about the internal work of
- 23:49becoming honest with yourself at a depth
- 23:52most people never attempt. Jung's
- 23:54contribution to understanding human
- 23:55aging was not a health protocol. It was
- 23:58a psychological one.
- 24:00He observed that we age prematurely, not
- 24:03because biology is cruel, but because
- 24:05most of us spend enormous portions of
- 24:07our lives in states of internal
- 24:09suppression, performance,
- 24:11self-abandonment, and inauthenticity
- 24:14>> [music]
- 24:14>> that generate physiological stress on a
- 24:17timeline that chronological time alone
- 24:20would never produce. And the reversal of
- 24:22this, a genuine awakening that reclaims
- 24:25what was suppressed, that integrates
- 24:27what was hidden, that allows the person
- 24:29to live from their actual nature rather
- 24:32than their constructed one.
- 24:34This reversal doesn't just change
- 24:36[music] how the person feels, it changes
- 24:38how the person looks.
- 24:40It changes the face, the posture, the
- 24:42quality of movement, the quality of
- 24:44presence in ways that are immediately
- 24:47apparent to everyone around them, and
- 24:49impossible to explain through
- 24:51conventional understandings of aging.
- 24:53This is what Jung was pointing toward
- 24:54when he documented these cases.
- 24:57Not some mystical exception to biology,
- 25:00but a very practical relationship
- 25:01between psychological wholeness and
- 25:04physical vitality.
- 25:06The person who has done this work
- 25:07doesn't stop time.
- 25:09>> [music]
- 25:09>> They stop contributing to their own
- 25:11premature aging through the ongoing
- 25:13accumulation of what they were never
- 25:15designed to carry indefinitely. [music]
- 25:17There is a final observation worth
- 25:19making
- 25:20because it completes the picture in a
- 25:21way that is both unsettling and, [music]
- 25:23if you are ready to hear it, genuinely
- 25:25freeing. The spiritually awakened person
- 25:28who looks younger than their age has not
- 25:29discovered a shortcut. They have not
- 25:31avoided suffering. They have not found a
- 25:34way to bypass the hard things that life
- 25:36brings to everyone.
- 25:37In almost every case, they have moved
- 25:39through more difficulty than the average
- 25:41person, not less.
- 25:43They have felt things more fully, lost
- 25:45more things more completely,
- 25:47then broken open in ways that most
- 25:49people successfully avoid for an entire
- 25:51lifetime. The reason they carry less of
- 25:53it in their face is not that less
- 25:55happened to them. It is that they
- 25:57processed what happened rather than
- 25:59storing it.
- 26:00They completed their grief rather than
- 26:02containing it.
- 26:04They integrated their shadow rather than
- 26:06maintaining the exhausting effort of
- 26:08keeping it invisible.
- 26:10They stopped performing their life and
- 26:12began actually living it.
- 26:14Often at enormous social cost.
- 26:17Often at the price of relationships and
- 26:19roles and identities that had previously
- 26:22organized their entire world. And on the
- 26:24other side of that, they arrived
- 26:26somewhere.
- 26:28Not into ease or comfort necessarily.
- 26:31Into authenticity.
- 26:32Into alignment.
- 26:34Into a relationship with their own
- 26:36existence that generates vitality from
- 26:38within
- 26:39rather than consuming it in the
- 26:40management of an internal split. And the
- 26:43face reflects this.
- 26:45Not as a cosmetic outcome.
- 26:47As a physiological truth. The eyes of a
- 26:50person who has stopped lying to
- 26:51themselves are different from the eyes
- 26:53of a person who hasn't.
- 26:56Not because the awakened person has
- 26:57become better or more spiritual or more
- 27:00evolved in any hierarchical sense.
- 27:04Simply because the work of
- 27:05self-deception costs something.
- 27:08And the cessation of that work returns
- 27:10something. Something visible.
- 27:13Something that other people sense
- 27:14immediately and often struggle to
- 27:16articulate.
- 27:18Something that gets attributed to
- 27:20genetics or lifestyle or some unnameable
- 27:23quality of being, but which is at its
- 27:25root simply this. The body of a person
- 27:28who is no longer at war with themselves.
- 27:31The face of a person who has stopped
- 27:33holding the world at bay with the effort
- 27:35of not being what they are.
- 27:37The eyes of a person who has looked into
- 27:39their own darkness, integrated what they
- 27:42found, and emerged [music] carrying less
- 27:44than they arrived with. This is what
- 27:46Jung observed. This is what he spent
- 27:49decades trying to understand [music]
- 27:50and document.
- 27:52And this is what waits on the other side
- 27:54of the kind of psychological honesty
- 27:56that most people never attempt. Not
- 27:58because they can't, [music]
- 28:00but because no one ever showed them that
- 28:02the cost of avoidance was always written
- 28:04into the face they see [music] in the
- 28:06mirror. You are not here by accident.
- 28:09Something in you already knows this is
- 28:11true.
- 28:12Perhaps you have seen it in someone.
- 28:15Perhaps you have glimpsed it in yourself
- 28:17in a moment when something released that
- 28:19you had been holding for years, and for
- 28:21a brief time,
- 28:22>> [music]
- 28:22>> you caught your own reflection and did
- 28:24not recognize how different you looked.
- 28:26That was real.
- 28:28That was not an illusion.
- 28:30That was your system showing you what
- 28:32becomes possible when the weight is put
- 28:35down. The path to it is not comfortable,
- 28:38but the arrival, as everyone who has
- 28:40made it will tell you, looks very
- 28:42different from the outside than most
- 28:43people expect.
- 28:45Not mystical.
- 28:47>> [music]
- 28:47>> Not transcendent in any dramatic sense,
- 28:50just quietly, unmistakably, more alive.
- 28:54And that aliveness shows in the only
- 28:56mirror that doesn't lie.
- 28:59The one that is visible to everyone
- 29:00around you before it is visible to
- 29:03yourself.
