  1. 0:02I often have people asking me the men's
  2. 0:18rights movement what's that about what's
  3. 0:20their platform what are their goals and
  4. 0:22I always get a little flustered I don't
  5. 0:26know how to answer that it seems like
  6. 0:27you have so many goals that how do you
  7. 0:30convince it into an easily explainable
  8. 0:32way I think you and I probably share the
  9. 0:35same experience trying to articulate the
  10. 0:40the entire platform of the men's rights
  11. 0:43movement is kind of like trying to
  12. 0:45understand a snow drift with one
  13. 0:47snowflake at a time it's a very very
  14. 0:51complicated matter we have the in
  15. 0:54justices the legal in justices that are
  16. 0:56going on like we've just been talking
  17. 0:58about the family courts we have the
  18. 1:00issues that are going on in suicide
  19. 1:03rates what's happening to men in
  20. 1:06education the sentencing disparity in
  21. 1:10criminal courts men are sentenced to 63%
  22. 1:15more prison time for the same crime as
  23. 1:18women they're more than three times as
  24. 1:22likely as women to go to jail for the
  25. 1:25same crime and the sentencing disparity
  26. 1:27between men and women for the same crime
  27. 1:30is six times greater than it is between
  28. 1:33whites and other minorities and we go on
  29. 1:38and on and on and on one subject after
  30. 1:41another these different things that
  31. 1:44impact the life of men and boys we have
  32. 1:46a ton of stuff that's just specific to
  33. 1:49boys we have young men that are failing
  34. 1:51to launch they're staying in their homes
  35. 1:54of origin far past the time that we
  36. 1:57would normally expect them to
  37. 1:58individuate and move
  38. 2:00and go live their lives we have video
  39. 2:03game addiction we have pornography
  40. 2:05addiction we have the abuse of young
  41. 2:07boys with drugs like ritalin to manage
  42. 2:10their behavior I mean there's no
  43. 2:12shortage of issues they're there they're
  44. 2:14stacked as as high as as you can see so
  45. 2:18putting it all into a nutshell I
  46. 2:21sympathize with that problem it's
  47. 2:23impossible to do but at what we can do
  48. 2:26is that we can articulate one basic idea
  49. 2:31about men that I think does sum it up
  50. 2:35and it has an impact on all these issues
  51. 2:37and how we inevitably look at them it's
  52. 2:41time for us to start seeing that men are
  53. 2:43human beings that they have feelings
  54. 2:47that they have pain that they are they
  55. 2:51feel betrayed by injustice they feel
  56. 2:53outraged by mistreatment they are hurt
  57. 2:58when we abuse them they're hurt when we
  58. 3:00take their rights away just like any
  59. 3:03other person you can think of and that
  60. 3:06is a lot of what a voice for men tries
  61. 3:09to pay attention to is that once we
  62. 3:13begin to have the concept of men not as
  63. 3:17human doings but as human beings and
  64. 3:22once we decide that they're actually
  65. 3:24worth listening to that that it's
  66. 3:28actually alright for them to complain
  67. 3:30about something bad happening to them
  68. 3:32once we get that established in this
  69. 3:35culture then we can start addressing
  70. 3:37this whole range of problems that affect
  71. 3:39men and boys in very specific ways but
  72. 3:42we'll never get there until we first get
  73. 3:44over the the cultural prejudice that men
  74. 3:48should not complain about anything and
  75. 3:50the myth that men have all the power
  76. 3:52which we've already discuss which they
  77. 3:54do not these are men that we're
  78. 3:58discussing and with all these problems
  79. 3:59that are the most powerless individuals
  80. 4:03you can possibly imagine a man that has
  81. 4:06been mistreated in Family Court that's
  82. 4:09had his children taken
  83. 4:10from him that has had all of his income
  84. 4:12taken away that has had his reputation
  85. 4:15ruined has absolutely nobody he can
  86. 4:19complain to about this the legal system
  87. 4:22does not want to hear it other men do
  88. 4:24not want to hear it
  89. 4:25women don't want to hear it nobody wants
  90. 4:28to hear it who does he talk to we wonder
  91. 4:31why that when you look at the suicide
  92. 4:34rate between men and women
  93. 4:36it is about four times male to female in
  94. 4:40normal circumstances during the course
  95. 4:43of a divorce or serious breakup it moves
  96. 4:47to ten to one because men are isolated
  97. 4:51during these processes and because a lot
  98. 4:53of times they're even their own families
  99. 4:55turn on that tell them to man up take it
  100. 4:59you decided to get married you go take
  101. 5:02care of your kids every bit of betrayal
  102. 5:05that they're feeling every bit of
  103. 5:07mistreatment that they're taking the
  104. 5:09response they typically get from the
  105. 5:11society around them is to shut up and
  106. 5:13take it as long as that's happening
  107. 5:17we're going to continue to have problems
  108. 5:19and that will keep happening as long as
  109. 5:21we refuse to see that these are
  110. 5:23flesh-and-blood human beings that have
  111. 5:26real problems and that deserve some
  112. 5:28compassion so all those issues that you
  113. 5:34listed off I think most people would
  114. 5:36agree that yes those are issues we need
  115. 5:38to look at and we need to address so why
  116. 5:42do you think the men's rights movement
  117. 5:44is that odds with feminism what has
  118. 5:47created that clash and that war between
  119. 5:51each other
  120. 5:53well one feminism has spent the last 50
  121. 5:57years demonizing men which is sort of
  122. 5:59one of the problems feminist scholars
  123. 6:04have characterized men is inherently
  124. 6:06Island inherently bad inherently
  125. 6:08predatory inherently oppressive they
  126. 6:12have postulated that we need to
  127. 6:14reconstruct men in a feminist paradigm
  128. 6:17that they are defective by nature that
  129. 6:23masculinity is a disease they even have
  130. 6:26a name for it it's called hegemonic
  131. 6:27masculinity where they really believe
  132. 6:32that there is a brand of masculinity
  133. 6:34that is psychopathic in nature with its
  134. 6:38control and with its tendency to abuse
  135. 6:41others around it I suppose they've
  136. 6:46forsaken any examination of normal human
  137. 6:48psychopathology and that and just gone
  138. 6:51for the fact that it has something to do
  139. 6:52with with masculinity in their eyes so
  140. 6:56where has feminine feminism gone astray
  141. 6:58in this we're going to be talking a long
  142. 7:02time about that feminism is a huge huge
  143. 7:08part of the problem for men in this
  144. 7:09culture right now if you go to any major
  145. 7:13university for instance one of the
  146. 7:15things I talked about a few minutes ago
  147. 7:17was that right now that there was
  148. 7:19something like 38 percent of college
  149. 7:21students on average or male women are
  150. 7:24earning about 70 percent of degrees that
  151. 7:28are issued and at rights that men are
  152. 7:31falling out of college like I said the
  153. 7:33last degree issued a bachelor's degree
  154. 7:35would be issued to a man in 2025 it
  155. 7:38probably will level off and we will be
  156. 7:41continuing to get men to Greece but at
  157. 7:44the rate of decline right now that's the
  158. 7:46picture yet when you go into a college
  159. 7:48campus which are feminists controlled
  160. 7:51strongholds academically speaking every
  161. 7:55gender specific program you see almost
  162. 7:58without exception is for women every
  163. 8:01special consideration it's it's the same
  164. 8:04way in in our health care system men die
  165. 8:07on average five years
  166. 8:10they die more frequently of most all the
  167. 8:13top killer diseases we have several
  168. 8:16national offices for women's health and
  169. 8:18we have nothing for men
  170. 8:22if that's not bigotry if that's not real
  171. 8:27deadly sexism I don't know what is and
  172. 8:31this is a product of feminist influence
  173. 8:34in our culture men have so many health
  174. 8:38problems that are unaddressed we don't
  175. 8:41care about them we have NFL players
  176. 8:44wearing pink ribbons for breast cancer
  177. 8:46which is fine I guess raise money for
  178. 8:49breast cancer that's a wonderful thing
  179. 8:51given that they're men what about
  180. 8:53prostate cancer
  181. 8:55how about NFL players dedicating some
  182. 8:59time to raising money for prostate
  183. 9:02cancer awareness in research the fact of
  184. 9:05the matter is is that there's no
  185. 9:07political benefit to it it is an orphan
  186. 9:11problem there's some research going on
  187. 9:14but you can't look at the fact that men
  188. 9:18have so many more significant health
  189. 9:21problems among them the fact that
  190. 9:23they're socially conditioned to not seek
  191. 9:25attention medically when they have
  192. 9:27problems and at the same time the lion's
  193. 9:31share of gender specific research money
  194. 9:33for medical research goes to women if
  195. 9:37this were happening to women if we were
  196. 9:40dedicating 80 90 percent of our gender
  197. 9:43specific medical research to men and we
  198. 9:46had no office for women's health but we
  199. 9:48had several offices for men's health it
  200. 9:51would be a national outrage people would
  201. 9:54be furious a lot of times people wonder
  202. 9:57about MRIs why are you guys so angry and
  203. 10:01my foot that is why aren't you how can
  204. 10:04anybody look at this and not be angered
  205. 10:07by it and the only answer to that I've
  206. 10:10ever been able to come
  207. 10:11with is that people aren't angry because
  208. 10:15they don't see men as human beings it's
  209. 10:17one thing when you looked at what
  210. 10:21happens to women in you and you feel
  211. 10:23normal healthy outraged about it and
  212. 10:26that should happen but when you can look
  213. 10:28at what's happening in our courts to men
  214. 10:30in our medical establishment to men in
  215. 10:33our schools to men and all the things
  216. 10:35that we've been talking about here and
  217. 10:37yet we remain so cerebral about all of
  218. 10:40it and we remain intellectual and we say
  219. 10:43yes well that is certainly something to
  220. 10:46consider if it were happening to any
  221. 10:49other group we would be having protests
  222. 10:52from coast to coast in this country and
  223. 10:55the fact is that it is happening to men
  224. 10:58every day right in front of our eyes and
  225. 11:00people will get angry at you if you try
  226. 11:03to talk about it that's how deep the
  227. 11:05prejudice runs against men in this
  228. 11:08culture and people not wanting to
  229. 11:11believe that's true doesn't make it not
  230. 11:13true
  231. 11:14it is true and we can see it right in
  232. 11:16front of our eyes
  233. 11:19yeah that gives you every reason to
  234. 11:24anyone every reason to be angry people
  235. 11:28want to know why m-ras are angry this is
  236. 11:31why anger is a healthy response to
  237. 11:35injustice it is supposed to be felt when
  238. 11:39people feel compassion about the
  239. 11:42struggles of people that are unaddressed
  240. 11:44or that are ignored when they respond to
  241. 11:46that in anger they're asserting their
  242. 11:49humanity they're standing up I used to
  243. 11:53identify as a feminist when I saw things
  244. 11:57that I believed happening to women
  245. 11:59the disproportionately that weren't
  246. 12:02happening to men when I believed that
  247. 12:04some of my views have changed a lot
  248. 12:06about how much things are happening to
  249. 12:08who and when I've become a lot more
  250. 12:10educated about it but when I looked at
  251. 12:13it and I saw it happening
  252. 12:15and I believed it was disproportionate
  253. 12:17it made me angry I wanted to do
  254. 12:20something about it I didn't want to just
  255. 12:21sit and be quiet and I didn't want to
  256. 12:23just say well yeah that's really rough
  257. 12:26and and then going about my business I
  258. 12:28wanted to take action and I did I did
  259. 12:31for a number of years and when I did it
  260. 12:34oh it was great
  261. 12:36people patted me on the back told me
  262. 12:38what a great person I was what a
  263. 12:39wonderful man I was to stand up for
  264. 12:42women for their struggles for their
  265. 12:44troubles and to try to do something
  266. 12:46about them and the moment I started
  267. 12:49standing up for men people started
  268. 12:51taking shots at me and telling me that I
  269. 12:54hated women that I must hate women how
  270. 12:56could I stand up for men unless I hated
  271. 12:58women that is the level of bigotry in
  272. 13:03this culture what you will find as you
  273. 13:06talk to feminist academicians because
  274. 13:09they will tell you flat-out that men
  275. 13:11don't have these issues that there is no
  276. 13:13prejudice against them in course there
  277. 13:14is no prejudice in health care there's
  278. 13:16no prejudice against women's goals
  279. 13:18there's nothing to be done here except
  280. 13:20perhaps we need to defeat patriarchy and
  281. 13:24help men express their feelings more
  282. 13:27like women it's a load of of lies it is
  283. 13:32a load of absolute lies and you're going
  284. 13:34to hear it when you talk to these people
  285. 13:36from coast to coast in this country they
  286. 13:40don't have any interest in helping with
  287. 13:43men's issues men's issues are about
  288. 13:45staying alive men's issues are about
  289. 13:47maintaining their constitutional rights
  290. 13:49their issues are not that they don't
  291. 13:52express their feelings correctly enough
  292. 13:54for feminists that is not the issue for
  293. 13:58men but you hear it just the same and
  294. 14:01again I mean I can even feel the anger
  295. 14:03now will up in me when I talk about this
  296. 14:05because this stuff is unjust it's not
  297. 14:08supposed to be happening this way we're
  298. 14:10supposed to have compassion for our
  299. 14:13fellow man just as much as our
  300. 14:15a woman
  301. 14:20[Music]
