Why "Just Rest It" Is the Worst Injury Advice Your GP or Physio Can Give You — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Welcome back to
- 0:03WOW, the whiteboard of wisdom. And in
- 0:07today's video, I'm going to talk about
- 0:09probably the most common mistake that
- 0:12the clients that we see who have failed
- 0:14previous approaches make. And one of the
- 0:17most surprising things is it's often the
- 0:20advice that has been given to them by
- 0:21their GP, physio, osteo, Cairo, and that
- 0:26is
- 0:28rest. Now, I'm sure you're familiar with
- 0:31the story. You get an injury, you go and
- 0:34see your GP, you Google online, you
- 0:36might use AI now, and one of the most
- 0:39common things that people get told is
- 0:41rest for 6 weeks and see how it is at
- 0:43the end of that. Now, this couldn't be
- 0:46poorer advice if it tried. And I've got
- 0:49two different diagrams on the board to
- 0:52explain it to you as simply as possible
- 0:54in the next sort of 10 to 15 minutes.
- 0:57And
- 0:59what I want to do is I want to make you
- 1:02or help you understand this through
- 1:03different physical qualities and the
- 1:06demands of your life of the activities
- 1:08you like doing of the sports that you
- 1:10may like playing. And those three
- 1:13qualities and there are more qualities
- 1:15than this but the three qualities that I
- 1:17want you to think about are strength,
- 1:19fitness and mobility. pretty much the
- 1:22three sort of foundational um qualities,
- 1:25but the ones that people understand the
- 1:27most when they think about rehab and and
- 1:29rehabilitating and fixing problems. And
- 1:32over here, this is a common mistake that
- 1:35people make.
- 1:37The dotted line up here are the physical
- 1:40requirements or what how much mobility
- 1:43you need, how much strength you need,
- 1:44how much fitness you need for your
- 1:46specific sport or activity. and the
- 1:52demands of that. And the reason that
- 1:55most people get injured is that they
- 1:56don't have enough strength, fitness,
- 1:59mobility, and a concoction of those
- 2:01different physical physical qualities
- 2:03together to tolerate the demands of what
- 2:05they're trying to play. It might be
- 2:07football, it might be running, it might
- 2:09be doing it recreationally, it might be
- 2:10going to the gym, it might be playing
- 2:12with the kids in the garden, it might be
- 2:14gardening. Whatever it is, whatever lens
- 2:17you look at it through, the same
- 2:19principle applies that this injury
- 2:20happens because of the gap between
- 2:25where you currently are, which is here,
- 2:28and this is your baseline, and the
- 2:30physical requirements of the sport or
- 2:32activity that you're trying to complete.
- 2:34And your body can't tolerate those
- 2:36demands because of where it is. And it
- 2:39breaks down. And that's whether it
- 2:41breaks down with physical trauma, a
- 2:43muscle tear, a joint injury, um, etc.,
- 2:47etc., or whether it's spasm, protective
- 2:50tone, um, things locking up. They're all
- 2:52common things that people say to us. And
- 2:55what typically happens is when you rest,
- 2:58this decline or deconditioning in those
- 3:02physical qualities happens
- 3:05and
- 3:06you bottom out here. So you actually get
- 3:10worse at the things that you were
- 3:11missing from the um
- 3:15onset of the pain. And what most
- 3:19rehabers do is just try and get you back
- 3:22to baseline because that's where you
- 3:25started. Now this is there's so many
- 3:28different shortcomings to this, but one
- 3:30of the biggest shortcomings is that that
- 3:32gap just still exists. So these are the
- 3:35people that return to their sport,
- 3:38return to gardening, return to playing
- 3:40with the kids, and they do it for 2,
- 3:43three, four, five, six weeks, whatever
- 3:44it is. And the same thing happens. They
- 3:49end up right back here because we could
- 3:52actually just consider this a wave going
- 3:54on. They end up right back here because
- 3:56they've just not brid the gap between
- 3:58where they currently are and where they
- 4:01need to be.
- 4:03I hope that makes sense. This is the
- 4:05most common mistake that people make.
- 4:07Now, this is the move approach and this
- 4:10is how we get people back quickly. We
- 4:12get them back effectively and we keep
- 4:16them back. And this approach is terrible
- 4:18for business, by the way, because as a
- 4:20business owner, how good of it would it
- 4:22be for me for you to just keep coming
- 4:24back in and believing that I'm helping
- 4:26you because I'm getting you back to pain
- 4:28free and back to baseline,
- 4:30but you not seeing or not knowing that
- 4:34the gap that needs closing is the true
- 4:36answer and the true fix to your problem.
- 4:38And quite frankly, what actually happens
- 4:40here is that people get back to here and
- 4:43then they bottom out a bit lower and
- 4:45they just keep deconditioning over time
- 4:48and over time because they just never
- 4:50get back to where they need to be to
- 4:52tolerate the demands. So what the move
- 4:54approach does is the injury happens and
- 4:58you come into us and we go through a
- 5:00really detailed assessment. That
- 5:03detailed assessment allows us to know
- 5:05exactly what that gap is. We know where
- 5:08you are. We understand your goal or your
- 5:12dream
- 5:14outcome
- 5:20and we can develop a needs analysis of
- 5:23how much strength, how much fitness, how
- 5:25much mobility you need. Like I said,
- 5:26there's more physical qualities than
- 5:28that. So then we can put a really
- 5:30specific plan in place that means that
- 5:34you can at least maintain as much as
- 5:37possible. And the majority of our
- 5:39clients
- 5:42might decondition a little bit, but very
- 5:44quickly they start to super compensate
- 5:48or they start to make this gap smaller
- 5:52and smaller and smaller over time.
- 5:56The reason I've left a little bit more
- 5:58of a time delay there in terms of the
- 6:00way that the strength is improving is
- 6:03because quite frankly, if you're in
- 6:05pain, you're not going to be able to
- 6:06tolerate pushing your strength as uh
- 6:08early as you are improving your mobility
- 6:12and improving your fitness. A lot of
- 6:14people think, oh, I I just need to rest
- 6:16and I can't develop my fitness or my
- 6:18cardiovascular fitness. Well, actually,
- 6:20if it's a lower body injury, we can do
- 6:22seated ski. So you're using your arm and
- 6:25you're developing your cardiovascular
- 6:27system. If it's an upper body uh injury,
- 6:29we can do lower body uh based
- 6:31cardiovascular exercises like bike um to
- 6:35develop that. And what we actually do,
- 6:37we don't just objectively test your
- 6:39injury. We objectively test you. We look
- 6:41at absolutely everything. And that's
- 6:42what's so unique about our approach and
- 6:44our pro recovery and performance plan.
- 6:46And if this is something you're
- 6:47interested in knowing a little bit more
- 6:49about the first link in the bio down
- 6:50below, it's an application form. It
- 6:53takes five minutes for you to fill out.
- 6:55It's essentially an opportunity for you
- 6:56to tell me about your injury, what your
- 6:58goals are. I read every single one of
- 7:00them and I will reach out to basically
- 7:03explain to you what I recommend as the
- 7:05best next steps.
- 7:07But
- 7:09as your pain improves, your mobility and
- 7:11your fitness are improving, and you're
- 7:13able to tolerate pushing your body more,
- 7:16and then your strength starts to
- 7:18improve. And what we're actually aiming
- 7:20to do is not just get you to the demands
- 7:24of your sport, but we want to exceed
- 7:26those so that we can guarantee with as
- 7:29much confidence that when you return
- 7:31back to your sport, you can tolerate
- 7:33that. I worked in professional uh rugby,
- 7:36international sport for nearly 10 years.
- 7:40And this was the single biggest thing
- 7:41that allowed me to achieve success. And
- 7:43one of the most unique sessions that I
- 7:45did within any rehab approach was a
- 7:47worst case scenario approach uh session,
- 7:49sorry, a worst case scenario session.
- 7:51And all I'm trying to do in that session
- 7:54is understand the sport and what that
- 7:56certain player or individual's demands
- 7:59are. And obviously, we've got loads of
- 8:01data that we can track and and bits and
- 8:03pieces there. and I want to take them to
- 8:06110% of a half of rugby or a half of
- 8:10football or a half of net ball or run at
- 8:13a higher intensity in their intervals. I
- 8:16just want to exceed that and know that
- 8:18they can hit 110% and they can therefore
- 8:23tolerate the demands of their sport and
- 8:25activity, get back there confidently,
- 8:28get there back there and enjoy them and
- 8:30also bridge the gap because like some
- 8:33people might go back here and they'll
- 8:36won't feel up to speed. They won't feel
- 8:39confident. they'll need 4 to 8 weeks
- 8:43getting back up to speed and then still
- 8:45only be here because they've just not
- 8:48finished the rehab process. All rehab is
- 8:51is strength and conditioning
- 8:54with a constraint of an injury to
- 8:56consider around it. And that's again why
- 8:58with that pro recovery and performance
- 8:59plan that I mentioned earlier, we aren't
- 9:02just your physio, we don't just do your
- 9:04rehab. We do all your strength and
- 9:05conditioning work. We do all your
- 9:06training. We do all your mobility. We
- 9:08help with lifestyle, nutrition, sleep.
- 9:10It is a fully comprehensive package so
- 9:13that we as much confidence can guarantee
- 9:16that we don't just get you back to
- 9:18baseline and you get stuck in this
- 9:20injury loop. We don't just get you back
- 9:22to your sport. we exceed those demands
- 9:24and we guarantee with as much confidence
- 9:26and ultimately I say this to my clients
- 9:27all the time I want to be able to look
- 9:29you in the eyes shake your hand and say
- 9:31that the job is finished and I want to
- 9:33be able to back that up with objective
- 9:35data that we've collected right from day
- 9:37dot or as early as possible in the um
- 9:40from the injury onset and we have
- 9:42retested at regular intervals and we
- 9:45have just seen you be able to hit all of
- 9:48the KPIs so the key performance
- 9:50indicators to know that you've earned
- 9:52the right to safely and effectively. Get
- 9:53back to your sport, your activities,
- 9:55whatever they are, and you're good to
- 9:58go. So, I hope that makes sense. The big
- 10:02takeaways,
- 10:03don't rest. There's always something
- 10:05that you can do. Like I said, mobility
- 10:07might be the first thing that we focus
- 10:08on, but it needs to be tested. It needs
- 10:10to be specific, not just the three best
- 10:12exercises that you've found on social
- 10:14media or on YouTube for your knee pain,
- 10:16for your ACL, for your back pain,
- 10:18whatever it is. Then we can think about
- 10:21right how can we improve different
- 10:22physical qualities. It might be fitness,
- 10:24it might be strength. There's lots of
- 10:26different modalities as well that we can
- 10:28probably introduce these things earlier.
- 10:30But it's very individualized in that
- 10:32regard in terms of what you have access
- 10:34to, how much time you have, etc., etc.
- 10:37But the biggest shift you can make if
- 10:39you're watching this, you're currently
- 10:41injured. Get out of this rest mindset.
- 10:44Get out of just trying to get back to
- 10:46baseline and get out of the injury
- 10:49cycle. Start having a performance
- 10:51focused rehab approach from day dot.
- 10:54Find someone that is going to be able to
- 10:55tell you exactly where you are with
- 10:58regards to your injury, but then also
- 11:00your overall performance that can then
- 11:03put a plan together that takes you back
- 11:05and exceeds the demands of the sport or
- 11:07activity, whatever lens it is. Whether
- 11:10you just want to play with the kids,
- 11:11garden on a regular basis, we've got
- 11:13we've now helped over four and a half
- 11:15thousand people at Move. Whether that's
- 11:16a combination of online uh in person at
- 11:19our Harriet HQ, hybrid clients that come
- 11:22and see us once a month and then we do
- 11:23all of their programming away from here,
- 11:25a very wide range of people. And this is
- 11:28our approach is we want to understand
- 11:30the demands of your dream outcome, where
- 11:32you are, and then basically how to fill
- 11:35the gap in between. So, like I said,
- 11:37there's a link in the bio if you want
- 11:39it. The second link in the bio is 30
- 11:41days uh 30 ways in 30 days to fix your
- 11:43injury. I'll just send you a free gift
- 11:46direct to your inbox every single day um
- 11:48with a piece of injury advice. Um so,
- 11:51yeah, if you're injured, first link. If
- 11:53you're injured and want more
- 11:56wisdom from the whiteboard, hit the
- 11:59second link and I look forward to
- 12:00chatting.
