Why It Sucks to Be Gay — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00You realize you're gay and for one sharp
- 0:02electric moment, it feels like clarity.
- 0:05Like you just solved a brutal riddle
- 0:07that's been clawing at your sanity for
- 0:09years. You're not broken. You're just
- 0:11not straight. Which in theory should be
- 0:14liberating. But in practice, it's like
- 0:17unlocking a door only to find out it
- 0:19opens into a church sermon about you.
- 0:23And then the world notices and the world
- 0:26doesn't respond with a cake and a
- 0:27parade. No. The world says, "Cool. Now,
- 0:31here's your welcome gift. Judgment,
- 0:34suspicion, and a lifetime subscription
- 0:36to invasive questions about your
- 0:38genitals and moral fiber." You'd think
- 0:41it would be easier by now. You'd think
- 0:43the concept of being attracted to
- 0:45someone wouldn't melt people's brains,
- 0:47but somehow your harmless crush is
- 0:49treated like a biohazard while your
- 0:52straight coworker makes out with their
- 0:53spouse in a Chili's and no one bats an
- 0:56eye. Welcome to gay life, where your
- 0:58existence is seen as rebellion, even
- 1:01when all you did was buy toothpaste. It
- 1:03starts early. You spend years trapped in
- 1:05a fog of weirdness, watching every
- 1:07romcom, and thinking, "Wow, I feel
- 1:10literally nothing." Then one same gender
- 1:12character shows up, says two words, and
- 1:15your body reacts like it's just been hit
- 1:17with the defibrillator. Then comes
- 1:19denial. The greatest performance of your
- 1:22life. You fake crushes, flirt with
- 1:24people you don't even like, and say
- 1:26things like, "That actress is hot." with
- 1:29the enthusiasm of someone naming their
- 1:31favorite tax form. You Google, "Am I
- 1:33gay?" So many times, the algorithm
- 1:36starts recommending conversion therapy.
- 1:38Still, the truth leaks out quietly,
- 1:41persistently, like blood through a paper
- 1:44towel. Coming out isn't a one-time
- 1:46thing. It's a constant, soul-numbing
- 1:49routine. You come out to your friends,
- 1:51your family, your boss, your Uber
- 1:53driver, and that one ant who keeps
- 1:55calling your boyfriend your roommate.
- 1:58Every new person is a roulette spin.
- 2:00Will they be chill? Or will they
- 2:02suddenly turn into a medieval priest?
- 2:04And even when people are okay with it,
- 2:07there's a tone, a pause, a moment of
- 2:09recalibration. I still love you, Lance.
- 2:12Like, I guess I won't disown you yet.
- 2:15Others get fascinated in the worst way,
- 2:17like you've just confessed to being a
- 2:19ghost or a witch. What was your first
- 2:21clue? They ask, like they're gathering
- 2:23evidence for a documentary. Family gets
- 2:25weird. Some are genuinely supportive.
- 2:29Others treat your truth like a betrayal.
- 2:32But you seemed so normal.
- 2:35Yeah, sorry I didn't come out in a
- 2:36rainbow cloud during my seventh birthday
- 2:38party. My bad. Holidays become endurance
- 2:41tests. You walk in with your partner and
- 2:43suddenly you're the cause of everyone's
- 2:44awkward silence. Someone inevitably says
- 2:47something homophobic wrapped in
- 2:49nostalgia. You smile, grit your teeth,
- 2:52and try not to ruin the cranberry sauce
- 2:54with rage. Dating, it's a disaster.
- 2:57Straight people have romance handed to
- 2:59them like IKEA furniture. Some assembly
- 3:01required, but the instructions exist.
- 3:04You You get a haunted house full of
- 3:06broken parts and no exits. Apps are full
- 3:09of shirtless torsos, emotional
- 3:11landmines, and people who ghost you
- 3:13mid-sentence. And when someone does show
- 3:16interest, you have to ask, "Are they
- 3:18safe?" Out, a repressed homophobe in
- 3:20disguise. Rejection hurts, but not just
- 3:25because it's rejection. It's often
- 3:27dipped in casual cruelty. You're cute
- 3:30for a guy. I'd never date someone who's
- 3:33actually gay, but maybe we could hook
- 3:35up. You become a novelty, a curiosity,
- 3:38an experiment, not a person, a kink with
- 3:41a pulse. Public affection becomes high
- 3:44stakes calculus. Hold hands, maybe.
- 3:46Depends on the city, the street, how
- 3:48close the nearest exit is, and whether
- 3:50anyone nearby looks like they've watched
- 3:52too much cable news. You risk violence
- 3:54for a moment that straight people post
- 3:56on Instagram with vintage filters. Work
- 3:58becomes a mask you wear. You monitor
- 4:00your voice, your tone, the pronouns you
- 4:03use. You laugh at the wrong jokes to
- 4:05stay safe. You dodge questions like
- 4:07you're in the Matrix just to keep your
- 4:10job because being openly gay at work
- 4:13still feels like a career risk,
- 4:15especially if the HR team thinks
- 4:16diversity means one poster during Pride
- 4:19Month. Some people treat you like a
- 4:21fashion accessory. You're gay. We should
- 4:23totally go shopping together. Others
- 4:26think you're a threat. Don't hit on me,
- 4:28please, Brad. I have higher standards
- 4:30than someone who still wears cargo
- 4:32shorts and quotes Joe Rogan. Media
- 4:35representation is a mix of starvation
- 4:37and disappointment. You grow up with
- 4:39dead queers, tragic queers, or the sassy
- 4:42gay friend who exists solely to validate
- 4:44a straight woman's mediocre choices. And
- 4:47when a gay character finally gets a
- 4:49happy ending, half the internet riots
- 4:51like someone burned down their
- 4:52childhood. Religion, don't get started.
- 4:56Even if you've escaped it, someone will
- 4:59bring it up like it's an argument card.
- 5:02But the Bible says, "Cool, Brenda." The
- 5:06Bible also says, "Don't eat shrimp. You
- 5:09planning to fight Red Lobster next? You
- 5:11think going to therapy will help until
- 5:14your therapist winces when you say the
- 5:16word boyfriend?" Finding a mental health
- 5:18provider who doesn't treat your
- 5:20sexuality like a trauma response is like
- 5:23hunting for buried treasure with a
- 5:24broken compass. You sit there paying by
- 5:27the hour while they ask if you've tried
- 5:29not being gay. In slightly fancier
- 5:32words, medical care isn't much better.
- 5:35Doctors ask if you're sexually active,
- 5:37then flinch when you answer honestly.
- 5:40Suddenly, your flu symptoms turn into a
- 5:42moral exam. You didn't come for
- 5:45judgment. You came for antibiotics or at
- 5:47least some damn Advil. People debate
- 5:50your rights like it's a stimulating
- 5:51thought experiment. Should gay people
- 5:54adopt Should gay marriage be legal?
- 5:57These are not questions. They're loaded
- 5:59weapons disguised as discourse. You
- 6:02exist. And they call it a conversation
- 6:05starter. Even your voice gets turned
- 6:07into evidence. Too deep, threatening,
- 6:10too light, mocked. You try to sound like
- 6:13yourself, but someone's always there to
- 6:15turn it into a punchline. You get used
- 6:17to being someone's icebreaker at a
- 6:19party. My gay friend said, "As if you're
- 6:21a citation, not a person. You try to
- 6:24find peace online, but the trolls are
- 6:26faster than your Wi-Fi. You post a photo
- 6:29and suddenly you're corrupting the
- 6:30youth. Meanwhile, the youth are watching
- 6:33horror movies rated 17 plus and
- 6:35following influencers who start cults.
- 6:38But your couple pick is the real danger.
- 6:40Traveling is its own hellscape. You pack
- 6:42two versions of yourself, one for
- 6:44safety, one for survival. You learn
- 6:47which countries could arrest you for
- 6:48existing and which airlines will glare
- 6:50at you for breathing. You plan romantic
- 6:53getaways with the same caution most
- 6:54people use for wilderness survival. Even
- 6:57joy has a price. You fall in love and
- 6:59someone calls it performative. You kiss
- 7:01in public and someone recoils. You exist
- 7:04in happiness and someone sees it as
- 7:07arrogance. Your triumphs are always
- 7:09treated like overreactions while your
- 7:12suffering is treated like background
- 7:13noise. And then just when you start to
- 7:16feel okay, someone reminds you you're
- 7:19lucky. It's cool to be gay now, they
- 7:21say. Like you haven't spent years
- 7:23dodging trauma like debris from a slow
- 7:25motion explosion. So you laugh because
- 7:28it's either that or scream into a void
- 7:31that echoes back with slurs and
- 7:32legislative bills. And you keep going.
- 7:36You scrape together joy like gold dust.
- 7:38You find people who get it, who see you
- 7:40and don't ask for an explanation. You
- 7:42build your life not in spite of the
- 7:44world's refusal to accommodate you, but
- 7:47because you deserve more than survival.
- 7:49Being gay isn't a trend. It isn't a
- 7:51debate. It's not a crime, a confession,
- 7:53or a marketing gimmick. But the world
- 7:56keeps twisting it into one. And still,
- 7:58you're here, bruised, brilliant,
- 8:01burning, not asking for permission,
- 8:04which to some people is the worst sin of
- 8:07all.
