- 0:00when I say the word kiwi what's the
- 0:01first thing that comes to your mind I'm
- 0:03sure if you asked a 100 people this same
- 0:05question you wouldn't get a unanimous
- 0:07answer some would say a fruit some would
- 0:09say a bird and some would say
- 0:10nationality how did kiwi become the name
- 0:13for so many different things and are
- 0:15they all connected the one thing all
- 0:16three of these kiwis have in common is
- 0:18New Zealand though not all three have
- 0:20their origins in the land on Middle
- 0:22Earth and sheep the kiwi fruit was
- 0:23originally native to China and is still
- 0:25one of their National fruits in its Home
- 0:27Country the fruit is known as the yanga
- 0:29and until recently was still collected
- 0:30in the wild as opposed to being
- 0:31traditionally farmed China however still
- 0:34exported the fruit and it became known
- 0:35through Europe as the Chinese gooseb it
- 0:38was at the turn of the century however
- 0:39when the first seeds landed on the
- 0:40shores of New Zealand they fell in love
- 0:43with the fruit and started to farm it by
- 0:441962 however a New Zealand grow started
- 0:47calling it the kiwi fruit why for Market
- 0:50reasons new zealanders are known as kiwi
- 0:52so Nam the fruit after the Charming
- 0:54people gave the fruit a certain charm in
- 0:56the market too wait the fruit is named
- 0:58after the people sir how did the people
- 1:01get their name well luckily for you guys
- 1:03an actual kiwi has come to help us with
- 1:05this one is that my C I think so squ has
- 1:08popped onto the Chan to help us out with
- 1:10this kiwi canundrum as a kiwi himself
- 1:12and all around Smart Cookie I'm sure
- 1:14he'll have the answers for us well
- 1:16indeed I do the kiwi bird has been used
- 1:20as a symbol of New Zealand almost since
- 1:21the birth of the nation the first New
- 1:23Zealand pictorial stamps made use of the
- 1:25Kiwi on the six Penny stamp and the
- 1:27first New Zealand currency featured the
- 1:29bird on all all of the notes the use of
- 1:31the Kiwi to symbolize New Zealand
- 1:33effectively resulted in the Kiwi
- 1:34becoming the de facto national animal
- 1:36for New Zealand before the first world
- 1:38war although still today this is an
- 1:41unofficial status but while the Kiwi was
- 1:43a national symbol and used to represent
- 1:45the nation it wasn't yet synonymous with
- 1:47the people the use of the word kiwi to
- 1:49represent new zealanders begins with the
- 1:50military the bird's image has been used
- 1:53on military badges since the South
- 1:54Canterbury Battalion used it in 1886 and
- 1:58several regiments used the symbol on
- 1:59their badges in the first world war by
- 2:01the end of the first world war New
- 2:03Zealand soldiers were carrying the
- 2:04nickname kiwi and this nickname would
- 2:06again be applied to New Zealand soldiers
- 2:08in the second world war after the second
- 2:10world war the word kiwi gradually became
- 2:12applied to all new zealanders and today
- 2:14the nickname is worn as a badge of
- 2:16national pride by us kiwis thanks cqu
- 2:19you guys should seriously check out his
- 2:21channel it's like mine if mine was
- 2:24actually any good however Solo's answer
- 2:26leaves us with a question if the fruit
- 2:28was named after the people and the
- 2:30people after the bird then where did the
- 2:32bird get its name the bird unlike the
- 2:34fruit is native to New Zealand there
- 2:36were two ideas on where the name came
- 2:38from kiwi in the marry language is
- 2:40thought to mean of imitative origin and
- 2:42this name was given to the bird because
- 2:43it's co as similar to many other birds
- 2:45and even possums the second theory goes
- 2:48the bird is named after the Polynesian
- 2:49Ki their word for the bristle fied curu
- 2:52another small brown curve beaked bird
- 2:55whichever story is true the birds became
- 2:57kiwis and then became an icon for
- 3:00country so much so the people named
- 3:02themselves after it and calling their
- 3:04fruit after it in tow petrick good stuff
- 3:07oh SLO you're still here didn't my
- 3:10people show you out yeah well they tried
- 3:13but I used my karate skills and laser
- 3:15gun to F them off oh I didn't know you
