  1. 0:00In my opinion, the most obvious reason
  2. 0:01to not become Eastern Orthodox is the
  3. 0:03doctrine of the filioquay. The filioquay
  4. 0:06means and the son because Catholics
  5. 0:08believe that the holy spirit proceeds
  6. 0:09from the father and the son while
  7. 0:11Orthodox Christians believe that the
  8. 0:13holy spirit proceeds only from the
  9. 0:15father. In order to explain why
  10. 0:16Catholics are right on this, I'm going
  11. 0:18to have to throw a lot of information at
  12. 0:19you at once. So, you might have to watch
  13. 0:20this over again once or twice. With that
  14. 0:23being said, here is why the filioquay is
  15. 0:24true. The first terms you need to know
  16. 0:26are principium quote and pripipium quo.
  17. 0:28Princhipium quote is the means which and
  18. 0:31the principium quo is the means by
  19. 0:33which. To better understand these we can
  20. 0:35use an analogy. Imagine you get burnt by
  21. 0:37touching metal. The princhipium quote is
  22. 0:39going to be the metal itself. It is the
  23. 0:41means which actually burns you. However,
  24. 0:42the prinipium quo is the means by which
  25. 0:45the metal burns you and that is going to
  26. 0:47be heat. Obviously in this situation the
  27. 0:49steel cannot be the principium quo
  28. 0:51because it is not of the nature of steel
  29. 0:53to burn. Otherwise all steel would burn
  30. 0:55you. Now that you understand those
  31. 0:56terms, let's take a look at the trinity
  32. 0:58itself. When the father beggets the son,
  33. 0:59he is the principle which the son is
  34. 1:01begotten of. However, the divine nature
  35. 1:03itself is the principle by which the son
  36. 1:06is begotten. So in this situation, the
  37. 1:08father is the principium quoted and the
  38. 1:09divine nature is the principium quo. Now
  39. 1:12this is really important to the
  40. 1:13discussion of the filioquay because
  41. 1:14remember the son receives the fullness
  42. 1:16of the divine nature from the father.
  43. 1:18And since the divine nature is the
  44. 1:19principle by which begetting and
  45. 1:21proceeding occur, the sun receiving the
  46. 1:23fullness of the divine nature therefore
  47. 1:25receives the ability to spirate. Now you
  48. 1:27might say, wait a second, if the sun is
  49. 1:29receiving the fullness of the principle
  50. 1:30by which begetting and spiration occur,
  51. 1:32wouldn't the sun then start beaggetting
  52. 1:34a million other sons? Not quite. In
  53. 1:36order to understand this, we have to
  54. 1:37make a distinction between the
  55. 1:38principium quo proxyum and pripium
  56. 1:40quoum. The pripium quo proximum is the
  57. 1:42most immediate principle by which and
  58. 1:44then the principium quo remotum is the
  59. 1:46greater power or nature behind that
  60. 1:48action. So for example if I wave hello
  61. 1:50to you the pripium quo proxyimum is the
  62. 1:53power to wave but the pranchipium quoum
  63. 1:55is my human nature. So when the sun
  64. 1:57receives the fullness of the divine
  65. 1:59nature from the father the pripium quo
  66. 2:01proxyimum of begetting a son terminates
  67. 2:03within the person of the son eternally.
  68. 2:06However, the pripium quo proximum of
  69. 2:08spirating a spirit does not terminate
  70. 2:10because the spirit has not yet been born
  71. 2:12according to natural order. So now that
  72. 2:14the son has the fullness of divinity and
  73. 2:16the ability to spirate, the father, the
  74. 2:18origin of spiration, sends the spirit
  75. 2:20through the son and generates the
  76. 2:22spirit. This is most likely why you hear
  77. 2:24so many early church fathers saying that
  78. 2:25the father is the only cause of the
  79. 2:27spirit. And that's because he is the
  80. 2:29origin and then sends it through the
  81. 2:31son. The father and the son are not two
  82. 2:33separate principles by which the spirit
  83. 2:34is sent but rather they come together to
  84. 2:36make one principle by which the early
  85. 2:38church fathers actually articulate this
  86. 2:40very well. St. Gregory of Nissa says
  87. 2:41that the trinity is like three torches.
  88. 2:43The first one being the father, the
  89. 2:44second being the son and the spirit
  90. 2:46being the third. The first torch gives
  91. 2:47the light to the second and then the
  92. 2:49second light, the sun gives the light to
  93. 2:51the third, the holy spirit. Here's the
  94. 2:52whole quote if you're interested. And
  95. 2:54there are so many more things to talk
  96. 2:55about here but unfortunately I'm running
  97. 2:57out of time and this video is already
  98. 2:58super long. So God bless.
