Why I picked the M4 iMac over the Mac mini — Transcript

- 0:00if there's any computer that Embraces
- 0:01the spirit of the Apple silicon era it's
- 0:04the computer that Apple staked its
- 0:05entire reputation on back in the Steve
- 0:07Jobs era and led to the revitalization
- 0:10of apple as a Titan in the computer
- 0:12industry the iMac but in a world where
- 0:15you can pick up an equally excellent Mac
- 0:17mini portable options like the MacBook
- 0:19Air and more powerful desktop options
- 0:22the iMac doesn't make as much sense as
- 0:24it used to so why do I still own one and
- 0:28why do I still use one that's a question
- 0:30I've been asking myself why do I
- 0:31continue to use an all-in-one computer
- 0:34when there's no technical advantages to
- 0:36it and no logical ones either what is it
- 0:39about the iMac that makes me want to use
- 0:41it over my other Macs and why does the
- 0:44experience feel different and why is it
- 0:46on my desk well I think a lot of that
- 0:49does have to do with the design it is
- 0:51impossibly thin comes in a bunch of
- 0:53great colors and this year the colors
- 0:55are slightly refreshed for brand new
- 0:57color tones that I think look great this
- 0:59green iMac in particular spoke out to me
- 1:02the moment I saw it and it's one of my
- 1:04favorite colors ever on a Mac and every
- 1:07detail looks meticulously designed down
- 1:10to the color match braided cable the
- 1:13color matching keyboard the color
- 1:15matching mouse or if you're like me a
- 1:17trackpad oh and these are USBC this year
- 1:20too it's such a well-built and
- 1:23well-design product as an Apple fan you
- 1:25clearly appreciate wellb built products
- 1:27and you probably wish all of your
- 1:28products paid that much attention to
- 1:30detail even let's say uh your toothbrush
- 1:33well this is what many consider to be
- 1:35the apple of toothbrushes and let me
- 1:37tell you the life and wave toothbrush is
- 1:39the first time I have ever been excited
- 1:41to unbox a toothbrush I mean look at the
- 1:43packaging and the unboxing experience
- 1:45it's like opening a new iPhone even the
- 1:48toothbrush itself is made from premium
- 1:49metals like aluminum or stainless steel
- 1:52I mean just look at that this is the
- 1:53most premium feeling toothbrush I have
- 1:55ever held and for how good it looks it
- 1:57brushes your teeth even better with the
- 1:59world's first electric toothbrush that
- 2:01can simultaneously vibrate and oscillate
- 2:03at the same time this movement closely
- 2:06mimics the dentist recommended bass
- 2:08brushing technique providing a Superior
- 2:10Cleaning experience it even has an app
- 2:12so I can customize the intensity of my
- 2:14brush adjust the exact brushing time
- 2:16apply a 30-second Zone reminder to make
- 2:18sure I brush every section of my teeth
- 2:20and I can long press the power button to
- 2:22put it into travel mode so it doesn't
- 2:24accidentally turn on it also has the
- 2:26longest battery life I have ever used in
- 2:28an electric toothbrush I was able to use
- 2:30this for a whole month without having to
- 2:31charge it and when you do have to charge
- 2:33it charges super easily with a magnetic
- 2:35connection and yes don't worry it's ipx7
- 2:38waterproof so it's safe for a rinse the
- 2:40life and wave has solved so many
- 2:41problems that I had with my other
- 2:43electric toothbrush that I literally
- 2:44threw it out after using it and best of
- 2:46all lyen has a Black Friday sale going
- 2:48on right now where you can get 40% off
- 2:51your purchase just search liyen on
- 2:53Amazon or Google or click the link in
- 2:56the description below and thank you to
- 2:57liyen for sponsoring this video now I
- 2:59want want to stay on the design of the
- 3:01iMac for just a second longer because
- 3:03this is a huge reason why I pick this
- 3:06over something like a Mac Mini I
- 3:08strongly believe the design of a product
- 3:10is important it's the difference between
- 3:12just using a product because that's what
- 3:14you have lying around and the difference
- 3:16between actually enjoying using it or
- 3:18being inspired by using that same
- 3:21product one of the main reasons why I
- 3:23still use an iMac even though I could
- 3:25literally use any other Mac as my home
- 3:27computer is because I enjoy walking into
- 3:30my room and seeing this thing placed
- 3:32prominently on my desk because above all
- 3:35it is Sleek and because I pick the color
- 3:37more personal when I see it I want to
- 3:40touch it I want to grab the display
- 3:42adjust it I want to grab the keyboard
- 3:44start writing on it I want to scroll on
- 3:46the trackpad I just want to start
- 3:48writing or creating or just do something
- 3:50with this beautiful piece of Hardware I
- 3:52don't think I'm weird for saying that
- 3:54I'm sure you have had similar
- 3:55experiences to this exact feeling that
- 3:58I'm having maybe with a different though
- 4:00some of you might have an attachment to
- 4:02a computer or a game console or a car an
- 4:05oven maybe even a well-built coffee
- 4:07maker I mean I get jazzed about that too
- 4:09and while I could technically get the
- 4:10same experience out of a Mac Mini
- 4:12connected to any monitor for some reason
- 4:14seeing that setup doesn't spark the same
- 4:17amount of joy that I have seeing an iMac
- 4:20now before this setup I did use just my
- 4:23MacBook Pro as my only computer and I
- 4:25kept an external display at home because
- 4:27I have a separate Studio that and every
- 4:30day I would also unplug the MacBook Pro
- 4:32from my home display put it in my book
- 4:35bag drive over to my studio and then
- 4:37plug it into my studio display there and
- 4:39at the end of the day I would unplug it
- 4:41from that studio display put it in my
- 4:43book bag come back home and then if I
- 4:46want to go do something at my desk at
- 4:48home sometimes there would just be this
- 4:50slight Interruption of oh well I guess I
- 4:52go got to grab my MacBook Pro from my
- 4:54book bag and plug it in I know first
- 4:56world problems right but sometimes I
- 4:59just wouldn't do that I would be lazy I
- 5:01would go you know what I can respond to
- 5:03that email later I can write that script
- 5:05another time or I'll remember to do that
- 5:07tomorrow there was just this slight
- 5:10barrier of not having a computer
- 5:12constantly set up and constantly
- 5:14connected the iMac doesn't have that
- 5:16sort of mental barrier it's plugged in
- 5:18it's always on the screen ready to light
- 5:20up at the instant tap of the trackpad or
- 5:23the keyboard and that immediacy and that
- 5:25presence is something that I appreciate
- 5:28and for the way my brain works I don't
- 5:30know what it is sometimes I just need
- 5:32that low barrier to entry the setup also
- 5:35always looks clean even for someone has
- 5:37cluttered and messy as I am I struggle
- 5:40so hard to make a desk setup that looks
- 5:42nice and organized and while I'm not
- 5:44saying that this setup is organizer
- 5:46clean in any way I also think it's kind
- 5:48of hard to make a setup for the iMac
- 5:50that looks bad because you only need a
- 5:53single cable to connect the computer and
- 5:56the display and the speakers and the
- 5:58camera that is the the benefit of an
- 6:00all-in-one design that even though yes
- 6:02there are accessories that you could
- 6:04connect to this it doesn't really
- 6:06require them and that's kind of funny
- 6:07cuz Apple added even more Thunderbolt
- 6:09ports on this Mac there's now four in
- 6:11total Thunderbolt ports they're all very
- 6:13fast on this new model but at the end of
- 6:15the day I'll sometimes just connect the
- 6:17charging cable to it and that's probably
- 6:19about it and then other parts about this
- 6:20computer are just so kind of complete
- 6:23the speakers sound really good even
- 6:25though they are coming out of a really
- 6:26thin body the webcam this year got a
- 6:28nice upgrade with the addition of the
- 6:30center stage webcam which can now track
- 6:33your movements just like they can on the
- 6:34uh expensive Studio display however the
- 6:37IMAX version has a more detailed picture
- 6:39with less noise and it's a good enough
- 6:41webcam for me to use over just a
- 6:43dedicated webcam and I wouldn't want to
- 6:45connect a dedicated webcam to this nice
- 6:47all-in-one design and I'm even more
- 6:49impressed by the display this year and
- 6:51yes for the most part it's the same 4.5k
- 6:54super Sharp LCD Retina Display as the
- 6:56previous years but this time I went for
- 6:58the new option nanotexture coating that
- 7:01gives the screen a more matte-like
- 7:02appearance and you kind of see the
- 7:04slight texture and Grain on the display
- 7:06but what that cating does is basically
- 7:09eliminate almost all forms of glare on
- 7:13the display itself so if you use it
- 7:15right near a window like I do you can
- 7:18still see the screen with complete
- 7:19visibility even when the sun is shining
- 7:22brightly through the window and to me it
- 7:24almost has this secondary effect that
- 7:25makes black levels appear deeper even
- 7:28though technically that's not true at
- 7:29all in fact the colors and black levels
- 7:32should pop a bit more on the regular
- 7:33glossy display option but I am so used
- 7:36to seeing a slight reflection of myself
- 7:38in the screen whenever I'm viewing a
- 7:40dark background or watching a video
- 7:42because the way that the Sun hits the uh
- 7:44room or maybe even at night when I have
- 7:46my lamps on but now with this iMac I can
- 7:49no longer see those distracting
- 7:50Reflections it just makes the screen
- 7:52appear more Vivid and clear even though
- 7:55it technically isn't and yes it's still
- 7:57a 24in display and while I do wish we
- 8:00had the option for a 27in iMac I also
- 8:03never feel at loss for space on this
- 8:06display I can fit enough windows for my
- 8:09own home use and for my creative
- 8:11workflows as well then there's one thing
- 8:13that specifically made me go out and
- 8:15upgrade to this iMac this year and use
- 8:17it again as my home computer when I have
- 8:20given up on trying this before with my
- 8:22M1 machine and that's just the
- 8:24configurations you can get on this
- 8:25machine the M4 chip alone is a really
- 8:29nice upgrade and yes while there's more
- 8:31powerful Maxs out there this is one of
- 8:33the first years where the Bas level
- 8:35chips feels like it has enough
- 8:37performance in all the key areas for me
- 8:40not to notice or care about it being
- 8:43weaker for the more intensive tasks that
- 8:46I would do on my other machines now
- 8:48being mostly a home computer I'm just
- 8:50using this for basic tasks like web
- 8:51browsing watching videos word processing
- 8:53listening to music but because it does
- 8:56have enough power there are times where
- 8:57I will load up my photo editing program
- 8:59or maybe even edit a video on here and
- 9:02while I technically have Macs that are
- 9:03more powerful than this sometimes I just
- 9:06don't require all that extra horsepower
- 9:09in the moment and for those times when I
- 9:12do bring work home and you know even if
- 9:14I do want a bigger external display well
- 9:16I can just AirPlay my more powerful
- 9:18MacBook Pro directly to this iMac
- 9:21display and Bam just like that I have
- 9:23all the power I need without sacrificing
- 9:25things I like about this iMac setup
- 9:28another reason why I integr the iMac
- 9:30into my home setup this year compared to
- 9:32the previous years is because I didn't
- 9:34have to spend as much money in this
- 9:36machine as I would have even just a year
- 9:39ago that's because the 16 GB of Base
- 9:41memory is perfectly fine for how I use
- 9:43this computer sure I could have upgraded
- 9:45this to 32 GB of memory for a more
- 9:47enhanced workstation feel but honestly I
- 9:50haven't felt the need to have anywhere
- 9:52close to that amount of memory for what
- 9:54I'm using this iMac 4 the one thing I
- 9:56still springed for was a storage upgrade
- 9:59but hey you win some you lose some right
- 10:01overall the price and value proposition
- 10:05of the base model on this iMac and
- 10:06frankly all Apple's Macs this year are a
- 10:09lot better but that does kind of get me
- 10:10back to my point I mean at $1,300 for
- 10:13the base model with just two ports only
- 10:16256 GB of storage even with that 16 GB
- 10:20of memory upgrade I think anyone
- 10:22watching this video can realize that the
- 10:23iMac isn't necessarily the killer value
- 10:26it used to be during the Intel days in
- 10:28fact in the pre-app Silicon era there
- 10:31was a time where the iMac was Apple's
- 10:34main consumer and prevel desktop
- 10:37offering now things have clearly changed
- 10:40the iMac is aimed solely at really just
- 10:42the consumer level audience for
- 10:44professionals apple has a much wider
- 10:46range of dedicated desktop offerings
- 10:49from the incredibly cheap Mac Mini to
- 10:51the Mac Studio all the way up to a Big
- 10:54Mac Pro so why would anyone spend $700
- 10:58more for an iMac when they can just get
- 11:00a Mac Mini and hook up whatever display
- 11:02they want whatever speaker they want
- 11:04whatever webcam they want and for most
- 11:06people as home computers have become
- 11:08less relevant and desktop computers are
- 11:10mostly marketed at professionals or
- 11:13Gamers the iMac doesn't seem to make
- 11:17much sense for those types of users and
- 11:20maybe most types of users but I still
- 11:24count myself as one of those users that
- 11:27do use an iMac and while I can't speak
- 11:29for everyone all I can say is that the
- 11:32iMac still represents the best
- 11:35all-in-one desktop solution with the
- 11:37simplest setup and ease of mind and yes
- 11:40most Macs work the same they're all
- 11:41running the same operating system but
- 11:44there's just something about waking up
- 11:46early or sitting here late at night
- 11:48using this iMac that just gives me a
- 11:50sense of joy that no other computer can
- 11:54it also just works and I will always
- 11:56love it for that reason alone and that
- 11:58might be a bit of Nostalgia the iMac was
- 12:00the first Mac that I ever used it was
- 12:03really the first computer I ever used
- 12:05and it inspired me all the way back then
- 12:08even in my childhood and it still
- 12:10inspires me today and that's really the
- 12:13main reason I still use an iMac might be
- 12:15a little personal might not be the best
- 12:18computer for most people but it's why I
- 12:20still use one and I still love the M4
- 12:23iMac now I know this video maybe some of
- 12:25you liked it but some of you probably
- 12:26were like hey this video could have also
- 12:28been called uh Rich YouTuber uh owns
- 12:31multiple Macs and likes to use them and
- 12:34you know he has a separate MacBook Pro
- 12:36and an iMac we hate this guy and I fully
- 12:39get that so if you hate this guy and
- 12:42this video leave if you liked it please
- 12:45give me a like if you want to see more
- 12:47make sure you're subscribed and I'll
- 12:48catch you all in the next one
