- 0:00that brother did preach didn't
- 0:04he let me say I'm honored to be here
- 0:07tonight um but let me give you a little
- 0:09bit of the
- 0:10backstory Dr Gaines contacted me a while
- 0:13back and and invited me to come preach
- 0:16there at his church there in Gardendale
- 0:19later this summer and uh after that
- 0:22invitation was sort of extended
- 0:25tentatively he said I need to check you
- 0:27out first so what do you do in June
- 0:3519th so I'm I'm I'm sort of here in view
- 0:37of a call to see if I'll still be able
- 0:40to come later this
- 0:44summer I want to share something with
- 0:46you tonight that uh is a burden for me
- 0:50mainly because of the backstory that was
- 0:52shared with you about my life about my
- 0:56having come to Faith late in life not
- 0:58having grown up in church not having
- 1:01grown up around Christians or around
- 1:04Christianity I was raised in the project
- 1:06in South Central Los Angeles by a single
- 1:08teenage mother who was a practicing
- 1:10Buddhist and I never heard the gospel
- 1:12until I got to college and I had
- 1:15questions numerous
- 1:18questions questions that needed to be
- 1:22answered and I met someone who took the
- 1:26time to answer my questions and the wall
- 1:30that I want to talk about tonight I is
- 1:33not necessarily a wall that we usually
- 1:36think about it's a wall in fact that
- 1:39hasn't been torn down necessarily by our
- 1:42adversary but in many instances it's
- 1:45been torn down by us you see we we
- 1:48responded to sort of rationalism and
- 1:51logical positivism and secular humanism
- 1:54and in responding to those things that
- 1:57that were that were so he that they led
- 1:59us away from the passionate pursuit of a
- 2:02holy God we have come almost full circle
- 2:06now the pendulum has swung in the other
- 2:08direction and now in many instances we
- 2:11have become
- 2:13anti-intellectual and we've moved Beyond
- 2:16anti-intellectualism to now we've almost
- 2:18moved into
- 2:20mysticism we are at a place where
- 2:22Theology and Doctrine are bad
- 2:25words we are at a place where there's a
- 2:28generation coming up that will believe
- 2:30anything if you say it with enough
- 2:33feeling so there is an intellectual wall
- 2:37that needs to be rebuilt we need to be a
- 2:40people who continues to love the Lord
- 2:43Our God with all our heart all our soul
- 2:45all our
- 2:48mind and all our strength so I want to
- 2:51do three things for you tonight one
- 2:53thing is this I want to answer what I
- 2:55believe is the most important question
- 2:57that we can answer in our culture today
- 3:00and secondly I want to make an
- 3:01observation about that answer and then
- 3:04issue a challenge if you would open your
- 3:06Bibles with me please to the book of
- 3:07second Peter second Peter chapter 1 let
- 3:10me give you the question here is the
- 3:12question that I believe is the most
- 3:13important question for us to be able to
- 3:15answer because legitimate questions
- 3:17deserve legitimate answers Peter says in
- 3:21First Peter that we are always to be
- 3:23ready to give an apology an apologia a
- 3:27reasoned response to anyone who asks us
- 3:31the reason for the hope that is within
- 3:33us here's that question that question is
- 3:36why do you choose to believe the
- 3:39Bible that's the
- 3:41question we must be able to answer that
- 3:43question in our culture today it's a
- 3:45legitimate question that deserves a
- 3:47legitimate answer but you see because of
- 3:49anti-intellectualism we hear that
- 3:51question and usually we'll say something
- 3:53like well I believe the Bible cuz cuz I
- 3:56was raised like
- 3:58that well bless your Spirit if that's
- 4:00your
- 4:02answer but please don't go out of here
- 4:05and say that to anybody I I I beg you
- 4:07please don't don't do that because that
- 4:09is not a reasoned response I was raised
- 4:13that way just doesn't cut it or
- 4:16sometimes because we live in this
- 4:18culture of experientialism sometimes
- 4:20because of this postmodern culture where
- 4:22what's true for you was not necessarily
- 4:24true for me and experience is King there
- 4:27is another answer with which we have
- 4:29become accustomed that we think is a
- 4:31great answer to the question and it goes
- 4:33something like this why do you choose to
- 4:35believe the Bible Well I choose to
- 4:37believe the Bible because I tried it and
- 4:39it worked for
- 4:41me we say that and then we sort of back
- 4:43up a couple of steps you know kind of
- 4:45let the answer sit
- 4:47there like we really just did something
- 4:51you did what you did was open a logical
- 4:54hole big enough to drive a Mac Truck
- 4:56through that's what you did because if
- 4:58your only answer is you believe it cuz
- 5:00you tried it and it works for you what
- 5:02about that individual who used to be an
- 5:04alcoholic 10 years ago and he went to an
- 5:07AA meeting they told him he need a
- 5:09higher power he couldn't find a higher
- 5:10power there was a squirrel that came
- 5:12outside of his window every morning he
- 5:14decided that squirrel was going to be
- 5:16his higher power hadn't had a drink in
- 5:1810 years guess what he tried the
- 5:20squirrel the squirrel worked for
- 5:23him according to your logic his squirrel
- 5:26has as much Authority as your
- 5:27Bible and the words of reges fman is
- 5:30that your final
- 5:33answer I I hope it's not let let me give
- 5:36you an answer to that question that I
- 5:39believe is better than I was raised that
- 5:42way or it's better than well I'm a
- 5:44southern baptist and that's the way we
- 5:46believe or it's better than I tried it
- 5:49and it works for me I want to tell you
- 5:51why I choose to believe the Bible
- 5:53because I don't believe the Bible cuz I
- 5:54was raised that way cuz I wasn't I I
- 5:57don't choose to believe the Bible cuz I
- 5:58tried it and it worked for me my
- 5:59mother's Buddhism worked for her that's
- 6:02why she was a Buddhist I need something
- 6:04more than just because it
- 6:06works here's the answer I'll give it to
- 6:09you and I'll unpack it for you I choose
- 6:11to believe the Bible because it's a
- 6:12reliable collection of historical
- 6:14documents written down by eyewitnesses
- 6:16during the lifetime of other
- 6:17eyewitnesses they report to us
- 6:18Supernatural events that took place in
- 6:20fulfillment of specific prophecies and
- 6:22claim that their writings are Divine
- 6:23rather than human in origin
- 6:26[Applause]
- 6:32in case you think I just made that
- 6:35up second Peter chapter 1 beginning at
- 6:38verse
- 6:4216 somebody going to come get me when
- 6:44these lights go
- 6:47off I'm nervous already light hadn't
- 6:50even started going off yet all
- 6:52right for we did not follow cleverly
- 6:54devised Tales when we made known to you
- 6:56the power and coming of our Lord Jesus
- 6:58Christ but we were eyewitnesses of his
- 7:01majesty for when he received honor and
- 7:03Glory from God the Father such an
- 7:04utterance as this was made to him by the
- 7:07Majestic Glory this is my beloved Son
- 7:09with whom I am well pleased and we OBS
- 7:11and we ourselves heard this utterance
- 7:14made from heaven when we were with him
- 7:15on the Holy Mountain so we have the
- 7:17prophetic word made more sure to which
- 7:19you do well to pay attention as to a
- 7:21lamp shining in a dark place until the
- 7:23day Dawns and The Morning Star arises in
- 7:25your hearts but know this first of all
- 7:27that no prophecy of scripture is a
- 7:29matter of one 's own interpretation for
- 7:31no prophecy was ever made by an act of
- 7:33human will but men moved by the Holy
- 7:36Spirit spoke from
- 7:41God now let's unpack this first of all
- 7:45the Bible is a reliable collection of
- 7:46historical documents look at what he
- 7:48says here in verse 16 for we did not
- 7:50follow cleverly devised Tales when we
- 7:52made known to you the power and coming
- 7:53of our Lord Jesus Christ we did not
- 7:56follow cleverly devised Tales we did not
- 7:58follow myths or fairy tales or Legends
- 8:02we did not follow things that were made
- 8:05up Luke puts it this way in his prologue
- 8:08in as much as many have undertaken to
- 8:10compile an account of the things
- 8:11accomplished Among Us just as they were
- 8:13passed down to us by those who were
- 8:15beforehand eyewitnesses and Servants of
- 8:18the word it seemed fitting to me having
- 8:21investigated everything carefully from
- 8:23the beginning to write it out for you in
- 8:26consecutive order most excellent
- 8:28theophilis so that you might believe God
- 8:30on Blind Faith No so that you might know
- 8:34the exact truth about the things you
- 8:37have been taught we have a reliable
- 8:40collection of historical documents not
- 8:44myths not fairy tales not Legends this
- 8:46is not the gilgames Epic here these are
- 8:49things that actually transpired in
- 8:52history and were recorded for us not
- 8:55only do we have a reliable collection of
- 8:57historical documents but they were
- 8:58written down by by eyewitnesses during
- 9:01the lifetime of other eyewitnesses look
- 9:03at what he says but we were eyewitnesses
- 9:06of His
- 9:08Majesty we
- 9:11saw anybody love crime dramas I I love
- 9:14crime drama I you know I was a kid I
- 9:15used to watch Quincy anybody used to
- 9:17watch Quincy you I growing up you know
- 9:19nowadays they got this what is it CSI or
- 9:21whatever everybody's all excited about
- 9:23CSI CSI is just Quincy on crack that's
- 9:26all that is y'all
- 9:31Quincy was the man I mean he figured
- 9:34that stuff out you know you know what
- 9:36would mess up an episode of Quincy or
- 9:39CSI or whatever else you want to watch
- 9:41if early on you have corroborating
- 9:44eyewitness testimony you got no mystery
- 9:46then that's what we have when we read
- 9:50the Bible corroborating iwitness
- 9:53testimony turn with me to the right if
- 9:55you will and look at what John says in
- 9:58his epistle look at what John says what
- 10:00was from the beginning what we have
- 10:02heard what we have seen with our eyes
- 10:04what we have looked at and touched with
- 10:05our hands concerning the Word of Life
- 10:08look at verse two the life was
- 10:10manifested and we have seen and
- 10:12testified and proclaimed to you the
- 10:14eternal life which was with the father
- 10:16and was manifested to us verse three
- 10:18what we have seen and heard we Proclaim
- 10:21to you also
- 10:24eyewitnesses a reliable collection of
- 10:26historical documents written down by
- 10:28eyewitnesses say but I also said during
- 10:31the lifetime of other eyewitnesses in 1
- 10:33Corinthians chapter 15 Paul says that
- 10:36Jesus was resurrected after he was
- 10:38resurrected he appeared to Peter then he
- 10:40appeared to the 12 then he appeared to
- 10:42all the the disciples at once then he
- 10:44appeared to over 500 Brethren at one
- 10:47time and he says these words most of
- 10:49whom remain until now when you do the
- 10:52math you realize that when First
- 10:53Corinthians was written there were over
- 10:55300 eyewitnesses at least of the res
- 10:59resurrection of Jesus Christ who were
- 11:01still alive during that time oh I hear
- 11:05you you're well-educated people you've
- 11:08heard the arguments yes brother I
- 11:10understand that but you see what
- 11:11happened was there were individuals who
- 11:13came and doctored the Bible up and it's
- 11:14been translated so many times and it's
- 11:16been changed so many times and when I
- 11:18talk to college students some sometimes
- 11:20they tell me about this myth of these
- 11:22overzealous monks who went out and
- 11:23changed the Bible so that things would
- 11:26match up so that it would look like we
- 11:28have older documents than we actually
- 11:30have and in fact and I think they're
- 11:32really telling me something when they
- 11:33tell this you know we don't have any of
- 11:35The
- 11:38Originals like I'm supposed to Shake in
- 11:40my boots when they tell me
- 11:42that listen to me if overzealous monks
- 11:46want to change the Bible can I explain
- 11:49to you what they would have had to do
- 11:51three levels of
- 11:53conspiracy level number one they would
- 11:55have had to have a manuscript conspiracy
- 11:58when we're talking about about just the
- 11:59New Testament itself there are over
- 12:016,000 manuscripts or portions of
- 12:03manuscripts for the New Testament itself
- 12:06now that may not sound like a lot to you
- 12:07but can I compare to a couple of things
- 12:09Julius Caesar's gallic Wars that's how
- 12:11we know about Julius Caesar and his
- 12:13Conquest we have around 10 manuscripts
- 12:16Aristotle's Poetics we have nearly five
- 12:19manuscripts when it comes to the
- 12:21writings of Herodotus we have less than
- 12:2410 manuscripts when it comes to the
- 12:26writings of Homer less than 10 of each
- 12:30of his writings when it comes to the New
- 12:31Testament we have 6,000 manuscripts or
- 12:35portions of manuscripts for the New
- 12:37Testament folks that's not even close
- 12:39well you don't have the originals no we
- 12:41really don't but guess what we can get
- 12:43earlier than ad1 120 was some of the
- 12:46copies that we have when it comes to
- 12:48juliia Caesar's Galla Wars the earliest
- 12:50thing we can put our hands on was
- 12:51written 900 years after the original but
- 12:54nobody's tearing down the walls in
- 12:56college because they're reading Caesar
- 12:58when comes to Aristotle the earliest
- 13:00thing we can put our hands on was
- 13:02written
- 13:031,400 years after the original but when
- 13:06it comes to the New Testament we can put
- 13:08our hands on documents that were written
- 13:10within Decades of The Originals so if
- 13:13these overzealous monks wanted to doctor
- 13:15the Bible what they would have to do is
- 13:17find over 6,000 manuscripts change all
- 13:22of them not show their ink work get them
- 13:25all back where they stole them from and
- 13:28never tell anybody what what they did
- 13:29that's just level number
- 13:35one here's level number two Jesus said
- 13:39go and make disciples of T ethne every
- 13:41people group funny thing about people
- 13:43groups they tend to speak different
- 13:44languages So within the first few
- 13:46centuries we have the bible translated
- 13:48into syc Coptic and Latin so now these
- 13:52overzealous monks have to find 6,000
- 13:55Greek manuscripts change those doctor
- 13:58them up don't shut your ink work get
- 13:59them back go find all the syak Coptic
- 14:02and Latin translations of those Greek
- 14:04manuscripts change those to match the
- 14:06lies that you told in another language
- 14:09and get those back where you stole them
- 14:10from and that's just level number two
- 14:13now you got level number three the early
- 14:15church fathers had this terrible habit
- 14:17of writing commentary on the New
- 14:19Testament so much so that BR Bruce Meer
- 14:22argues if all we had of the New
- 14:25Testament was the quotations and
- 14:27citations by the early church fathers we
- 14:29could reproduce over 95% of the New
- 14:32Testament just from their writings so
- 14:34now these overzealous monks have to find
- 14:376,000 manuscripts and portions of
- 14:39manuscripts steal them change them don't
- 14:42show your ink work get it back without
- 14:44anybody finding out they got to find
- 14:45syak Coptic and Latin translations
- 14:48change those to match the lies that they
- 14:50told in the 6,000 manuscripts get those
- 14:53back where they stole them from and then
- 14:54find all of the writings of all of the
- 14:57early church fathers ch change those to
- 15:00match the lies that they told two layers
- 15:02ago get those put back never tell
- 15:04anybody what they did and never ever get
- 15:07caught help you if you believe
- 15:16that we have a reliable collection of
- 15:19historical documents written down by
- 15:22eyewitnesses during the lifetime of
- 15:25other eyewitnesses so far we just got a
- 15:27good history book now it gets good
- 15:29they report to us Supernatural events
- 15:33look at what he says here verse 17 for
- 15:36when he received honor and Glory from
- 15:38God the Father such an utterance as this
- 15:39was made to him by the Majestic Glory
- 15:41this is my beloved Son with whom I'm
- 15:43well pleased and we ourselves heard this
- 15:45utterance made from heaven when we were
- 15:47with him on the Holy Mountain now we got
- 15:49the Mount of
- 15:50transfiguration now we got Supernatural
- 15:52events not superhuman
- 15:55events we have
- 15:57Supernatural events
- 16:00stuff you can't get good enough to do
- 16:02we're not talking about psychosomatic
- 16:03healings we're talking about a woman
- 16:05with an issue of blood who is healed
- 16:08instantly we heard earlier about the man
- 16:10with a withered hand healed instantly
- 16:12men who were blind from Birth deaf from
- 16:15birth mute from birth men who were lame
- 16:17from birth healed instantly one of my
- 16:21favorites Jesus tells the disciples
- 16:24y'all go over to the other side of the
- 16:25lake I'll meet you
- 16:31later on on the boat somebody I don't
- 16:33know who they say hey um did Jesus say
- 16:37how he was
- 16:40coming no why cuz he he
- 16:48[Applause]
- 16:53coming or my favorite of them all Friday
- 16:59dead
- 17:01Sunday
- 17:08risen we have a reliable collection of
- 17:11historical documents written down by
- 17:14eyewitnesses during the lifetime of
- 17:16other eyewitnesses they report to us
- 17:20Supernatural events and those events
- 17:22took place in fulfillment of specific
- 17:25prophecies we're not talking that
- 17:27General Nostradamus type stuff
- 17:29specific prophecies for example when
- 17:32Jesus is on the cross interestingly when
- 17:35he's on the cross I don't know let's
- 17:36just imagine go back shall we if we will
- 17:39let's go back uh you first century and
- 17:41we're Jewish people and we probably talk
- 17:43about our Old Testament maybe we use
- 17:44Aramaic when we speak to one another and
- 17:47I want you to open your Bible for
- 17:49example to Psalm number 22 which is
- 17:51where we're going here for a moment if I
- 17:53wanted you to do that I couldn't tell
- 17:55you to open to Psalm number 22 because
- 17:58we've only hadap chapters and verses for
- 17:59a few hundred years if it was the first
- 18:01century and I was speaking to you in
- 18:02Aramaic and I wanted you to turn to
- 18:04Psalm number 22 I would have to tell you
- 18:06to turn to the title of Psalm number 22
- 18:09which would have been the first line of
- 18:10Psalm number 22 so I'd have to tell you
- 18:13to open your scroll to
- 18:15Ali or my God my God why have you
- 18:18forsaken me now that ought to sound
- 18:20familiar because it's exactly what Jesus
- 18:22said while he was being crucified I know
- 18:24you know this but I like it so much
- 18:27let's do it anyway number 22 verse1 my
- 18:30God my God why have you forsaken me look
- 18:32at verse 6 I'm a worm and not a man of
- 18:35reproach of men and despised by the
- 18:37people all who see me sneer at me they
- 18:39separate with the lip they Wag the head
- 18:41saying commit yourself to the Lord let
- 18:43him deliver him let him rescue him
- 18:45because he Delights in him sound
- 18:46familiar that's what's being said to
- 18:48Jesus while he's being crucified look at
- 18:50verse 12 many bulls are surrounded me
- 18:52strong Bulls of bation have encircled me
- 18:54they open wide their mouth at me as a
- 18:55ravening and roaring lion and poured out
- 18:57like water all my bones are out of joint
- 18:59my heart is like Wax it is melted within
- 19:01me
- 19:03interesting Pierce him in the side
- 19:05puncture the par cardium blood and water
- 19:08rush out look at verse 15 my strength is
- 19:11dried up like pot and my tongue Cleaves
- 19:13to my jaws how about this wine vinegar
- 19:15on this sponge Jesus because you did say
- 19:17I thirst verse 16 dogs have surrounded
- 19:21me folks that's
- 19:23Gentiles a band of evildoers has
- 19:25encompassed me one on the right and one
- 19:27on the left
- 19:29they pierc my hands and my feet I can
- 19:31count all of my bones
- 19:33why because nobody had to break your
- 19:36legs to hasten your death they divide my
- 19:38garments among them and for my clothing
- 19:40they cast lots folks that was written a
- 19:42thousand years before Jesus was born it
- 19:44was written by a man who never once saw
- 19:46crucifixion in his life because
- 19:47crucifixion had not yet been
- 19:51invented that is why Peter can say back
- 19:55in our passage verse 19 so we have the
- 19:58prophetic word made more
- 20:02sure we have a reliable collection of
- 20:06historical documents written down by
- 20:09eyewitnesses during the lifetime of
- 20:12other eyewitnesses they report to us
- 20:15Supernatural events that took place in
- 20:17fulfillment of specific
- 20:19prophecies we just looked at a couple of
- 20:22examples of that and then here's the
- 20:24kicker they claim their writings are
- 20:26Divine rather than human in origin look
- 20:28down with me verse 20 but know this
- 20:30first of all that no prophecy of
- 20:32scripture is a matter of one's own
- 20:34interpretation for no prophecy was ever
- 20:36made by an act of human will but men
- 20:37moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from
- 20:41God they claimed these are God's words
- 20:43and not theirs that's why these
- 20:46prophecies were fulfilled hundreds or
- 20:50thousands of years afterwards that's why
- 20:52they use phrases like and thus says the
- 20:54Lord and the Lord spoke to Moses saying
- 20:57and God said to Abraham they say these
- 21:01are God's words and not men's words oh I
- 21:04hear
- 21:05you but see that's the problem nobody
- 21:08wants to believe that because they know
- 21:09that men wrote the Bible and when we say
- 21:12it's the word of God they said no it's
- 21:14the word of men because men took pen to
- 21:15paper and you cannot trust things that
- 21:18were written by men that's always
- 21:19interesting to me you know why cuz back
- 21:21in school I don't remember anybody you
- 21:23know in the math class you got something
- 21:25wrong you know you're supposed to use
- 21:27Pythagorean theorem there you know that
- 21:28a squ plus b sare = c sare thing you
- 21:31know you didn't use Pythagorean theorem
- 21:33there you got this wrong you can't Mark
- 21:34me off for that that came out of a math
- 21:37book a man wrote that math book that
- 21:39means it's
- 21:46fallible just because man took pen to
- 21:49paper doesn't mean you can't trust
- 21:51what's written the question you ask is
- 21:54this is what's written reliable is it in
- 21:58interally consistent is it corroborated
- 22:01well what's corroboration I don't know
- 22:04maybe three languages Greek Hebrew
- 22:06Aramaic three continents Asia Africa
- 22:08Europe over 40 authors most of whom
- 22:10never met one another who wrote over a
- 22:12period of some 1500 years and tell one
- 22:16singularly woven together story how's
- 22:18that for
- 22:25corroboration here's another one and I
- 22:29just have to admit I like it when people
- 22:31use this one because there's part of me
- 22:34that you know I don't like to talk about
- 22:36Sunday
- 22:37[Music]
- 22:38school his name is bad
- 22:41V try to let him out at least once a
- 22:44week late at night when nobody's
- 22:47around he loves this
- 22:50one when people
- 22:52say you believe that Bible but I'm a man
- 22:55of science and unless you can prove it
- 22:58to me
- 22:59scientifically I just can't believe that
- 23:03see at that moment I try to grab on the
- 23:06bad V and hold him real tight and not
- 23:08let him
- 23:09go because I know what he'll do if I let
- 23:12him go he won't be Christian he just
- 23:14won't sometimes I think he's not even
- 23:16saved because of the stuff that he wants
- 23:18to
- 23:22say cuz I would be gentle with the
- 23:25people bad V wouldn't even be gentle
- 23:27he'd say you
- 23:34he look at him and he say something like
- 23:35this listen you don't even deserve to
- 23:38remain in this argument but I'm going to
- 23:40let you stay in the argument because I'm
- 23:42going to like what's about to happen to
- 23:44you cuz intellectually I'm about to beat
- 23:46you like a tied up goat so hold on right
- 23:49where you are all
- 23:52right how you going to sit here and tell
- 23:54me you're a man of science and you'd
- 23:56believe it you know if I you you know
- 23:58proved it to you scientifically why do
- 24:00you want me to use the scientific method
- 24:02do you not realize that you don't use
- 24:04the scientific method on historical
- 24:07events that proves you don't even
- 24:09deserve to be in the argument here's the
- 24:11scientific method in order to use the
- 24:13scientific method something has to be
- 24:15observable measurable and repeatable
- 24:18folks you can't use the scientific
- 24:20method to prove that George Washington
- 24:21was our first president why because his
- 24:24presidency is not observable measurable
- 24:27and repeatable see they messed around
- 24:28let me go to
- 24:35school you don't use the scientific
- 24:38method there you have to use a more
- 24:41evidentiary method there so what you do
- 24:43is like what we do in a courtroom you
- 24:45say do we have any eyewitnesses well I
- 24:48just told you we got some of those do
- 24:51the eyewitnesses tell the same story yep
- 24:54Friday dead Sunday risen
- 24:57[Applause]
- 25:04they say something's going to happen and
- 25:06it happens exactly the way they
- 25:10said you see we have
- 25:14no external evidence that would argue
- 25:17against the Bible's claim to be the word
- 25:19of God
- 25:22none so the real intelligent thing to do
- 25:27is to believe what it says
- 25:29so I don't choose to believe the Bible
- 25:31just cuz I was raised that way I wasn't
- 25:35I don't choose to believe the Bible just
- 25:37cuz I tried it and it works for
- 25:39me I choose to believe the Bible now say
- 25:42this with me if you will because it is a
- 25:45reliable collection of historical
- 25:47documents written down by eyewitnesses
- 25:50during the lifetime of other
- 25:51eyewitnesses they report Supernatural
- 25:54events that took place in fulfillment of
- 25:56specific prophecies and claim that their
- 25:58writings are Divine rather than human in
- 26:00origin I told you I wanted to do three
- 26:02things number one I wanted to answer
- 26:04this question that I believe is a
- 26:06pertinent question in our culture that
- 26:07we have to be able to answer it's a
- 26:09legitimate question that deserves a
- 26:11legitimate answer secondly I told you I
- 26:13wanted to make an observation Pastors in
- 26:15the room listen to
- 26:17me I just shared an expository
- 26:20sermon I preached the text in its
- 26:24context I did not try to be more
- 26:26creative than God
- 26:36it's what I like to call expository
- 26:39apologetics the Bible answers every
- 26:43relevant question all scripture is God
- 26:47breathed and profitable for teaching
- 26:48rebuking correcting training in
- 26:51righteousness all of it his divine power
- 26:54has given us everything we need for life
- 26:56and godliness to our knowledge of him
- 26:57who called us by by his own glory and
- 26:59Excellence here's what I'm worried about
- 27:01there's a lot of us who believe in the
- 27:03inherency of scripture but some of us
- 27:05Don't Preach like we believe in the
- 27:07sufficiency of
- 27:11scripture don't let anybody tell you
- 27:14that Exposition is a thing of the past I
- 27:16hope I didn't bore you because a lot of
- 27:18people say Exposition is boring I hope
- 27:20you weren't
- 27:21bored a lot of people say Exposition is
- 27:24irrelevant I I believe I just answered
- 27:27what I would argue is the most relevant
- 27:28question that our culture is asking and
- 27:31did it verse by verse precept upon
- 27:33precept line upon line which brings me
- 27:35to the third thing and that's the
- 27:38challenge we have got to teach the
- 27:41people of God number one that the Bible
- 27:46has the answer and number two how to
- 27:50learn it and give it anybody who can
- 27:53memorize this passage of scripture in
- 27:55its
- 27:56context can learn how to give the answer
- 27:59that I just gave you
- 28:02anybody anybody folks that's why that's
- 28:06why we wrote the ever loving truth
- 28:07that's why I wrote the ever loving Truth
- 28:09Bible study that's what it's all about
- 28:11for people to get this into their minds
- 28:14so that when somebody asks them a
- 28:16question like why do you choose to
- 28:17believe the Bible they don't have to
- 28:19Fumble around and hym in the hall they
- 28:21don't have to give some lame answer like
- 28:23you know I was raised that way or I
- 28:25tried it and it works for me they can
- 28:27look people in the eye like a young lady
- 28:29from Dartmouth College where I was
- 28:30teaching
- 28:32this who looked a science professor of
- 28:34hers in the eye and for the first time
- 28:37in her life felt confident enough to
- 28:39speak up in the classroom and looked at
- 28:42him and said well sir I choose to
- 28:44believe the Bible because it's a
- 28:45reliable collection of historical
- 28:47documents written down by eyewitnesses
- 28:49during the lifetime of other
- 28:50eyewitnesses they report Supernatural
- 28:53events that took place in fulfillment of
- 28:54specific prophecies and claimed that
- 28:56their writings are Divine rather than
- 28:58human in origin and by the way if you
- 29:00want to you can put some gravy on top of
- 29:01it I tried it worked for me
