Why GOD Put a DOG in Your Life - This Will Make You Cry — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:01What if your dog isn't here by accident?
- 0:04What if
- 0:05out of every moment in your life, out of
- 0:07every path you could have taken,
- 0:08something greater made sure this one
- 0:10soul found you?
- 0:12Not just any dog.
- 0:14This one.
- 0:16The one who sleeps near you, who watches
- 0:18you,
- 0:18who somehow always knows when something
- 0:20is wrong before you've said a single
- 0:22word. Because here is what science has
- 0:24discovered
- 0:25and what ancient wisdom has always
- 0:27known. The bond between a human and
- 0:29their dog is unlike anything else that
- 0:30exists on this earth. Not similar to
- 0:32other bonds.
- 0:34Unlike anything else. And when you
- 0:35understand why,
- 0:37you'll never look at your dog the same
- 0:38way again.
- 0:40Let's go back.
- 0:42All the way back.
- 0:43In ancient Egypt, the god Anubis,
- 0:45guardian of the dead, wore the head of a
- 0:47jackal.
- 0:48Dogs didn't just roam the streets of
- 0:50ancient Egypt, they stood at the
- 0:51threshold between life and death.
- 0:53>> [music]
- 0:53>> They were the ones trusted to guide
- 0:55souls safely through the darkness into
- 0:57whatever came next. Not priests or
- 1:00[music] angels.
- 1:01Dogs.
- 1:03Because even then,
- 1:04thousands of years before science,
- 1:06>> [music]
- 1:07>> people understood that these creatures
- 1:09carried something sacred.
- 1:11Something that could be trusted with the
- 1:12most important journey [music]
- 1:15a soul ever takes.
- 1:18In Native American [music] traditions,
- 1:19dogs were spirit guides.
- 1:21Protectors of the tribe not just from
- 1:23physical danger, but from spiritual
- 1:25[music] harm.
- 1:26They were believed to sense what human
- 1:28eyes couldn't see.
- 1:30To warn of energies that hadn't [music]
- 1:31taken shape yet. And in Celtic
- 1:33mythology,
- 1:35dogs were the companions of healers,
- 1:37present at sacred springs, [music]
- 1:39believed to carry the power of
- 1:40restoration in their very touch.
- 1:43Now, ask yourself something.
- 1:46Why would cultures that never met,
- 1:49separated by oceans and centuries and
- 1:51language and belief, all arrive at the
- 1:53exact [music] same conclusion?
- 1:56That dogs are more than animals.
- 1:58That they stand at a crossing point
- 2:00between the human world and something
- 2:01deeper.
- 2:03That is not coincidence. That is a truth
- 2:05so old it found its way into every
- 2:07corner of the earth independently.
- 2:09Because it needed to be known.
- 2:14And then consider this.
- 2:16The word dog, spelled backward,
- 2:19is god. [music]
- 2:20Some people smile at that and move on.
- 2:23But others feel something when they hear
- 2:25it.
- 2:26A recognition.
- 2:27Because when you live with a dog, when
- 2:30you really pay attention,
- 2:31you start to notice that everything we
- 2:33say
- 2:34god is, a dog simply is.
- 2:38Unconditional love.
- 2:40Forgiveness without being asked.
- 2:42Loyalty that doesn't depend on your
- 2:44worthiness. Presence that never
- 2:46abandons. You can leave a dog alone for
- 2:488 hours and come home to the same
- 2:50celebration you'd receive [music] if
- 2:51you'd been gone a year.
- 2:53You can lose your temper
- 2:55and an hour later,
- 2:57they're resting their head in your lap
- 2:58as if nothing happened.
- 3:00No grudge, no withdrawal of love, no
- 3:02punishment.
- 3:03Just forgiveness.
- 3:05Just return.
- 3:07Just love exactly as it was before.
- 3:10If a human loved us that way, we'd call
- 3:12it extraordinary. [music]
- 3:13We'd write poems about it.
- 3:16We'd search for it our whole lives.
- 3:19And yet it's been lying at your feet
- 3:20this whole time.
- 3:26Have you ever come home on the worst day
- 3:27of your life, the kind of day where
- 3:29everything feels heavy and wrong and you
- 3:31don't even know where to begin? [music]
- 3:33And before you've said a word, before
- 3:35you've explained anything to anyone,
- 3:38your dog was already there.
- 3:39Already pressed against you. Already
- 3:41doing that thing they do where they just
- 3:42stay
- 3:44quiet and steady.
- 3:46Like they've decided they're not moving
- 3:48until you feel better.
- 3:50They didn't learn that.
- 3:51>> [music]
- 3:52>> Nobody taught them that.
- 3:54It comes from somewhere deeper than
- 3:55training.
- 3:57Somewhere deeper than instinct.
- 3:59There are dogs who have detected cancer
- 4:01before any doctor could find it.
- 4:03Sensing [music] something in the body's
- 4:05chemistry that no machine had identified
- 4:07yet.
- 4:09There are dogs who have woken sleeping
- 4:10families before a fire reached the
- 4:12bedroom.
- 4:13There are dogs who sensed a seizure
- 4:15coming and positioned [music] themselves
- 4:17so their person wouldn't fall alone.
- 4:19No command or training for that specific
- 4:21moment.
- 4:23Just a knowing. [music]
- 4:24A love so attuned to its person that it
- 4:27became something almost impossible to
- 4:29explain. [music]
- 4:31In Tibetan Buddhism, dogs are considered
- 4:33protectors against negative spiritual
- 4:35energy.
- 4:36In early Christianity, they were symbols
- 4:38of faithfulness and watchful devotion.
- 4:41Across the world, across faith
- 4:42traditions that agree on almost nothing
- 4:44else,
- 4:45there is this quiet agreement.
- 4:47Dogs see things we don't.
- 4:50They feel things before we do.
- 4:52They stand guard over something in us
- 4:54that [music] we can't always protect
- 4:56ourselves.
- 4:58Have you ever watched your dog growl at
- 4:59an empty corner of a room, or refuse to
- 5:01enter a space that seemed perfectly
- 5:03normal to you, or react to a person with
- 5:05sudden unease before that person had
- 5:07done anything to earn it?
- 5:09Most people brush it off.
- 5:11But most spiritual traditions would tell
- 5:12you to pay attention.
- 5:15Because your dog may be more awake to
- 5:17what surrounds you
- 5:19than you realize.
- 5:23And then there is what dogs teach us
- 5:25just by being alive. We spend fortunes
- 5:27on therapy, on self-help, on retreats
- 5:30and books [music] and guided meditations
- 5:32trying to learn how to be present.
- 5:34How to stop dragging the past into every
- 5:36moment.
- 5:37How to stop fearing the future.
- 5:39How to simply be here.
- 5:41In this breath.
- 5:43In this room.
- 5:44In this life.
- 5:46Your dog woke up this morning and did
- 5:48all of it naturally.
- 5:50No anxiety about what happened last
- 5:51week.
- 5:53No dread about what might happen
- 5:54tomorrow.
- 5:56Just this walk.
- 5:58Just this smell.
- 5:59Just this moment of sunshine on the
- 6:01floor.
- 6:03Just this person right in front of them.
- 6:06Who is,
- 6:07as far as they're concerned,
- 6:09the entire world.
- 6:12That is not a small thing to witness
- 6:14[music] every day.
- 6:15That is a teacher living in your home
- 6:16demonstrating what full presence looks
- 6:18like without any agenda,
- 6:20without expecting you to understand.
- 6:23Some spiritual teachers believe that
- 6:25certain souls choose their lives before
- 6:27they arrive. That the relationships that
- 6:29matter most, the ones that shape us,
- 6:31that crack us open, that heal something
- 6:34we didn't even know was broken,
- 6:36those were agreed upon before the first
- 6:39breath.
- 6:41Soul contracts.
- 6:42Chosen meetings.
- 6:45What if your dog was one of those?
- 6:48What if the animal who arrived in your
- 6:49life at the exact moment they did,
- 6:52who bonded with you in the exact way
- 6:54they did,
- 6:55who has stayed beside you through
- 6:57whatever you've carried, what if none of
- 6:58that was random? What if they knew you
- 7:01needed exactly what they had to give?
- 7:03Cuz there is something undeniable
- 7:06about a dog who finds their person.
- 7:08The rescue who was passed over again and
- 7:10again
- 7:11until one specific human walked through
- 7:13the door.
- 7:15The puppy who ignored everyone in the
- 7:16litter and made a beeline for [music]
- 7:18the one person in the room
- 7:21who was quietly falling apart on the
- 7:22inside [music] and didn't know it yet.
- 7:25The old dog at the shelter. The one
- 7:27everyone overlooked. Who somehow ended
- 7:29up exactly where they needed to be.
- 7:32These moments happen too often, too
- 7:33precisely, [music]
- 7:34to feel entirely like chance.
- 7:40There is another thing that rarely gets
- 7:42talked about.
- 7:43What dogs do not just for the people who
- 7:45own them, but for the world around them.
- 7:47Think about what happens when a dog
- 7:49enters a room full [music] of strangers.
- 7:51Walls come down.
- 7:53People who wouldn't have spoken to each
- 7:55other start speaking.
- 7:57Someone bends down to pet them and
- 7:59suddenly [music] there's a conversation,
- 8:01a laugh, a moment of connection that
- 8:03wouldn't have existed without that dog
- 8:07walking through the door.
- 8:08Dogs dissolve the invisible barriers
- 8:10that humans spend their whole lives
- 8:12constructing around [music] themselves.
- 8:14The armor we wear in public.
- 8:17The performance of being fine.
- 8:19The distance we keep because closeness
- 8:21feels too risky.
- 8:23A dog doesn't recognize any of that
- 8:25armor. Mm, they walk straight through
- 8:27it.
- 8:28Researchers studying social connection
- 8:30have found that dog owners are
- 8:31significantly more likely to meet their
- 8:33neighbors, form friendships, [music]
- 8:35and report feeling a sense of community
- 8:38than people without dogs.
- 8:40Not slightly more likely.
- 8:42Significantly. [music]
- 8:44The dog becomes a bridge between
- 8:45isolated human beings who were standing
- 8:47just feet from each other and never
- 8:49finding their way across.
- 8:51Spiritually, this is not a small thing.
- 8:54Almost every wisdom tradition points
- 8:55[music] to disconnection from each
- 8:57other, from ourselves, from the divine
- 9:00as the root of human [music] suffering.
- 9:02And here is this creature
- 9:04who undoes disconnection simply [music]
- 9:05by existing.
- 9:07Simply by being joyful and open and
- 9:09unguarded [music] in a world that has
- 9:11forgotten how to be any of those things.
- 9:18And what about the loyalty?
- 9:20Because nothing in the human experience
- 9:22prepares you for the loyalty of a dog.
- 9:24Most of us have been let down
- 9:26by people we trusted completely.
- 9:28>> [music]
- 9:28>> By relationships we believed were
- 9:30permanent.
- 9:31By versions of the world we were told we
- 9:33could count on.
- 9:35Betrayal leaves a mark that doesn't
- 9:36fully fade. It teaches us, slowly and
- 9:39painfully,
- 9:40to hold something back.
- 9:42To love with one hand open and one hand
- 9:44ready.
- 9:46And then you watch your dog
- 9:48wait by the door every single day at the
- 9:49same time because that is when you
- 9:52[music] come home.
- 9:53Even on the days you're late.
- 9:56Even on the days you forget.
- 9:58They are there, certain, patient,
- 10:00[music] believing without any evidence
- 10:02that you are coming.
- 10:04That you always come.
- 10:05That you would never not come. That kind
- 10:08of faith is rare in this world.
- 10:10There is a story most dog lovers know.
- 10:13Hachiko, the Japanese Akita who waited
- 10:15at Shibuya train station every day for
- 10:17his owner who had died.
- 10:19He waited for 9 [music] years.
- 10:22Every single day
- 10:24until he died at the same spot.
- 10:27A statue of him still stands at that
- 10:28station. [music]
- 10:30People leave flowers. They cry when they
- 10:32see it even if they've never had a dog
- 10:34because
- 10:35>> [music]
- 10:35>> something in that story reaches into a
- 10:37part of the human heart that recognizes
- 10:39it immediately.
- 10:41That is what faithfulness looks like
- 10:43>> [music]
- 10:43>> when it has no conditions attached to
- 10:46it.
- 10:47And if you have a dog in your life, you
- 10:48are living with that level of devotion
- 10:51right now. [music] Not in a history
- 10:52book, not in a statue, in your home.
- 10:55Following you from room to room, waiting
- 10:57for you,
- 10:58choosing you
- 11:00every day without question.
- 11:02>> [music]
- 11:02>> Do not take that lightly.
- 11:04Not everyone in this world has been
- 11:06chosen like that.
- 11:10And what about loss?
- 11:12Because we cannot talk about what dogs
- 11:14mean without sitting with the grief of
- 11:16losing them.
- 11:17Anyone who has loved a dog and lost them
- 11:19knows that there is a particular silence
- 11:21that follows.
- 11:22A shape in the room where they used to
- 11:24be.
- 11:25The grief surprises people with its
- 11:27size. They feel almost embarrassed by
- 11:29how much it weighs, but it weighs
- 11:31exactly as much as the love did. And the
- 11:33love was real.
- 11:35Completely
- 11:36entirely real.
- 11:39And many people believe that what a dog
- 11:40leaves behind [music] is nothing.
- 11:43That the love they gave you,
- 11:45the patience they modeled, [music]
- 11:47the safety they created,
- 11:49the joy they reflected back at your
- 11:51worst moments,
- 11:52all of that lives on.
- 11:54Not just in memory.
- 11:55In who you became while they were with
- 11:57you.
- 11:58In the ways you [music] learned to
- 11:59forgive faster because they showed you
- 12:02how.
- 12:03In the ways you learned to be more
- 12:05present
- 12:06because they never [clears throat]
- 12:07stopped being present [music] with you.
- 12:09They change us.
- 12:11And the changed version of us carries
- 12:13them forward.
- 12:14Always.
- 12:19So, here's the question worth sitting
- 12:20with.
- 12:21Why did this dog come into your life?
- 12:24Was it to protect you from something you
- 12:26[music] never saw coming?
- 12:27Was it to heal something that had been
- 12:29broken so long you'd forgotten what
- 12:31whole felt like? Was it to teach you
- 12:33what unconditional love actually looks
- 12:35like when it has no agenda,
- 12:37>> [music]
- 12:37>> no conditions, no fine print? Or maybe
- 12:40it was something even simpler and even
- 12:42more profound than all of that.
- 12:45Maybe they came to remind you on the
- 12:46ordinary Tuesday mornings and the long
- 12:48hard nights and the quiet in between
- 12:51moments
- 12:51>> [music]
- 12:51>> that you are loved.
- 12:53That you are seen.
- 12:55That something in [music] this universe
- 12:56decided
- 12:58you were worth showing up for because
- 13:00that is what they do. Every single day
- 13:02without fail, without question, without
- 13:04anything asked in return. [music]
- 13:05They show up for you. And maybe
- 13:08just maybe
- 13:09that is the most sacred thing of all. If
- 13:11your dog has ever touched your soul in a
- 13:13way that words can barely hold,
- 13:16share your story in the comments. We
- 13:17would love to hear it.
- 13:19And if this message found you at the
- 13:20right moment, like this video and
- 13:22subscribe to stay [music] with me
- 13:24because there is more here waiting for
- 13:26the people who need it.
