Why Does a Diesel Stop at 4,500 RPM? — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00If you floor a petrol car, it revs to
- 0:02about 7,000. A diesel stops around
- 0:044,500. You'd probably blame its heavier
- 0:07parts, but the bigger limit is fire. You
- 0:09see, a petrol engine mixes fuel and air
- 0:12before the spark. [music] So, its flame
- 0:13keeps up with the engine. A diesel has
- 0:15no spark. It sprays fuel into hot,
- 0:18squeezed air, where it turns to mist and
- 0:20catches fire on its own. But, it only
- 0:22burns as fast as it finds air. Spin the
- 0:24engine faster, and the piston races down
- 0:26while the fuel is still burning. Past
- 0:284,500, the fire is chasing the piston.
