  1. 0:00Can petite women not exist in media?
  2. 0:01Let's talk about depiction. Now, fans
  3. 0:02often express concern about the way that
  4. 0:04short and petite women are depicted in
  5. 0:05media because certain physical
  6. 0:06proportions or tropes often intersect
  7. 0:08uncomfortably with how a child generally
  8. 0:09looks. It's very reflective of a real
  9. 0:11life frustration that a lot of petite
  10. 0:12women face when looking for
  11. 0:13representation in media because media
  12. 0:15often blurs the line between authentic
  13. 0:16representation of an adult woman. In the
  14. 0:18hyperinfantilization of a character that
  15. 0:20looks like a child but is technically an
  16. 0:21adult just for the sake of audience
  17. 0:23protection, characters like Elaine are
  18. 0:24heavily criticized for being sexualized
  19. 0:25and looking like a physical child
  20. 0:27despite technically being a thousand
  21. 0:28years old. Right? And so when we compare
  22. 0:30that to characters that are in similar
  23. 0:31situations like Monster Girl or Rebecca,
  24. 0:33to whom also have narrative
  25. 0:34justification into why they look younger
  26. 0:36than they actually are and are also in
  27. 0:37romantic relationships and or
  28. 0:38sexualized, it's an objective fact they
  29. 0:40don't get half the criticism that
  30. 0:41characters like Elaine do. And though on
  31. 0:42paper a lot of people think that it
  32. 0:44comes from a level of hypocrisy, but
  33. 0:45what a lot of people are forgetting is
  34. 0:46that it isn't the depiction in a vacuum,
  35. 0:47but instead the infantilization coupled
  36. 0:49with the depiction. Alen's personality
  37. 0:50often leans into the helpless, delicate
  38. 0:52maiden trope and often needing
  39. 0:53protection, which reinforces the idea
  40. 0:54that her small size is inherently
  41. 0:56connected to the fact that she's
  42. 0:56fragile, which is what makes her come
  43. 0:58across like a [ __ ] child. Above that,
  44. 1:00characters like Rebecca completely break
  45. 1:01away from any infantilization of her
  46. 1:02character primarily from her utilization
  47. 1:04of extreme outbur language as well as
  48. 1:06weaponry. Monster Girl actively resents
  49. 1:07the fact that she looks like a child,
  50. 1:08and the narrative revolves around the
  51. 1:10fact that she looks like a child, but is
  52. 1:11still cognitively an adult, forcing the
  53. 1:13audience to see her as an adult that's
  54. 1:14navigating through a nightmare scenario
  55. 1:15rather than a character that's designed
  56. 1:16to look youthful for the sake of
  57. 1:18audience fetishization. The narrator
  58. 1:19brings the fact that these characters
  59. 1:20are depicted as adults by depicting them
  60. 1:21with independence and a lack of
  61. 1:22infantilization. Nevertheless, petite
  62. 1:24women definitely have the [ __ ] end of
  63. 1:25the stick as far as representation. But
  64. 1:26when people are critical of these kind
  65. 1:27of characters, it's not because they're
  66. 1:28exclusively petite, but instead, it's
  67. 1:30coupled with infantilization that
  68. 1:31creates the controversy in regards to
  69. 1:32people's stigma of petite women depicted
  70. 1:34in media.
