Why Did Jesus Say Only God Is Good? — Transcript

1. 0:00Okay. What about when he says, "Why do
2. 0:01you call me good? Only God is good."
3. 0:03>> Okay. So, I want to point out something
4. 0:04very important here. Jesus does not say
5. 0:06that he's not good. He doesn't say,
6. 0:08"Hey, I'm not good. Don't say that." Nor
7. 0:10does he say, "Don't call me good." So,
8. 0:11he doesn't deny being good. He asks a
9. 0:14question. I'm going to read the passage,
10. 0:15"Good teacher, what must I do to inherit
11. 0:18eternal life?" And Jesus said to him,
12. 0:20"Why do you call me good? No one is good
13. 0:22except God alone. You know the
14. 0:23commandments. Don't unal alive. Don't
15. 0:25commit adultery or steal or bear false
16. 0:27witness. defraud and honor your mother
17. 0:30and your father." And he said to him,
18. 0:31"Teacher, all these I have kept from my
19. 0:33youth." And Jesus looking at him loved
20. 0:35him and said to him, "You lack one
21. 0:37thing. Go sell all that you have and
22. 0:40give to the poor and you will have
23. 0:42treasure in heaven and come follow me."
24. 0:44Verse 22. Disheartened by the saying,
25. 0:47the man went away sorrowful, for he had
26. 0:50great possessions.
27. 0:51>> So he didn't listen to what Jesus told
28. 0:53him to do.
29. 0:53>> Correct. He chose to keep his
30. 0:55possessions rather than follow Jesus. As
31. 0:58he's choosing his possessions over
32. 0:59Jesus, does he truly believe that Jesus
33. 1:02is good?
34. 1:02>> No.
35. 1:02>> Very good. If he truly believed Jesus
36. 1:04was good and believed that in who he
37. 1:06truly was, he would have gave up his
38. 1:08possessions and follow Jesus without
39. 1:10question. So this is a test for the
40. 1:12young man and for the audience as well
41. 1:14because then he goes on to say verse 23,
42. 1:16he has an audience watching him. And
43. 1:18Jesus looked around and said to his
44. 1:19disciples, "How difficult it will be for
45. 1:22those who have wealth to enter the
46. 1:24kingdom of God." And the disciples were
47. 1:26amazed at his words. But Jesus said to
48. 1:28them again, "Children, how difficult it
49. 1:30is to enter the kingdom of God. It is
50. 1:32easier for a camel to go through the eye
51. 1:34of a needle than for a rich man to enter
52. 1:36the kingdom of God." And then they say,
53. 1:38they're surprised. They respond, "Then
54. 1:40who can be saved? Who can do it? It's
55. 1:41impossible to enter the kingdom of God
56. 1:42by our own merit." Jesus looked at them
57. 1:44and said, "With man it is impossible,
58. 1:47but not with God. For all things are
59. 1:49possible with God." He did this for a
60. 1:51reason. Make sense?
