  1. 0:00The biggest risk to your future isn't
  2. 0:02your competition, it's the distractions
  3. 0:04you insist on keeping in your life
  4. 0:06rather than doing the things you know
  5. 0:08you should be doing but aren't.
  6. 0:10People delay doing things they don't
  7. 0:12like for longer than it takes to do
  8. 0:14them.
  9. 0:21>> There have been so many times in my life
  10. 0:23where I knew I needed to do something
  11. 0:26and then I filled all this extra time
  12. 0:28not doing that thing.
  13. 0:30And then the moment I did it, I was
  14. 0:32like, "Wow, that took way less time than
  15. 0:34I thought it was going to take." And not
  16. 0:36only that, it took way less time than it
  17. 0:38took me to delay to actually get to this
  18. 0:40point. And if I had only started with
  19. 0:43just doing what I was supposed to do, I
  20. 0:45could have done four or five other
  21. 0:46things that I was also supposed to do by
  22. 0:48this exact same point. And so thinking
  23. 0:50about it from that perspective, I've
  24. 0:52tried to eliminate as much time between
  25. 0:55I think I should do this thing and
  26. 0:57beginning doing it. And I think you get
  27. 0:59this positive reinforcement cycle that
  28. 1:01occurs every time you start I call it
  29. 1:04pulling the thread. It's like I just
  30. 1:05need to start pulling the thread and
  31. 1:07then all of a sudden what feels really
  32. 1:08unknown becomes very tangible and you're
  33. 1:10like, "Oh, I understand the six problems
  34. 1:12I have to solve to do this big thing,
  35. 1:14but now I know the problems and then it
  36. 1:16feels like you can you can wrap your
  37. 1:17arms around it and then you can start
  38. 1:19taking it one bite at a time."
  39. 1:21>> The same thing works in reverse as well,
  40. 1:23that when you put something off, it
  41. 1:24makes putting it off more mañana,
  42. 1:25mañana, mañana.
  43. 1:28>> I used to define power by the distance
  44. 1:31between thoughts and reality.
  45. 1:33Um meaning
  46. 1:36if you think about somebody who's
  47. 1:37omnipotent, so if God or the God figure
  48. 1:39would be omnipotent, as he thinks,
  49. 1:41things are. So there's zero space
  50. 1:43between thoughts and reality. And so if
  51. 1:46we want to be more God-like in our
  52. 1:47lives,
  53. 1:48the distance that we can shrink between
  54. 1:51wanting to do something or thinking
  55. 1:52something should be done and it being
  56. 1:54done
  57. 1:55is a direct indication of our personal
  58. 1:57power in our lives. And so that has
  59. 2:00helped me basically think, don't be a
  60. 2:03powerless [ __ ]
  61. 2:05>> [laughter]
  62. 2:06>> Like, just shrink the shrink the gap.
  63. 2:08And I think that's why a lot of my my
  64. 2:10little like personal hacks of waking up
  65. 2:12and then trying to shrink the time
  66. 2:13between when I wake up and when I start
  67. 2:15working and shrinking the time between
  68. 2:17one task and the next task. Like, you
  69. 2:19don't need to take 30 minutes of getting
  70. 2:20ready to start working. Like, you can
  71. 2:22just start working because as soon as
  72. 2:24you get into it, you start pulling the
  73. 2:25thread and you're like, oh, here it is.
  74. 2:26And all of the time that I was getting
  75. 2:28ready to work, I was just using up my
  76. 2:30best brain power time on things that
  77. 2:32truly don't move the needle at all.
  78. 2:34>> Yeah, I came to call that the
  79. 2:35productivity rain dance.
  80. 2:37That you sort of do this weird sacred
  81. 2:39ritual beforehand. And we've spoken
  82. 2:41about this before, but it's, you know,
  83. 2:42there are certain things that you can do
  84. 2:44that will make uh success or
  85. 2:46productivity or focus more likely and
  86. 2:48better. It doesn't mean that you should
  87. 2:50disregard them. That over-reliance on
  88. 2:52them makes a very fragile um
  89. 2:56unrobust way to get into working.
  90. 2:59>> I would delineate the difference between
  91. 3:01preparation and routine.
  92. 3:03And so, if I'm preparing for a
  93. 3:06presentation, for example, I might
  94. 3:07assemble my notes. I might read some
  95. 3:10stuff about the audience ahead of time.
  96. 3:12I might read about whoever's, you know,
  97. 3:13doing the the event and learn more about
  98. 3:16that. I see that as preparation for the
  99. 3:18thing, which I still see as work. And I
  100. 3:21think some people, I made a a post about
  101. 3:23how preparation is like everything. I
  102. 3:25put a lot into preparation. They're
  103. 3:26like, oh, see, you have a morning
  104. 3:28routine. I was like, no, no, no, I don't
  105. 3:29need to to, you know, stand on one foot
  106. 3:31and do 17 cold plunges and write six
  107. 3:33affirmations because none of those
  108. 3:34things
  109. 3:36are directly related to the work that
  110. 3:37I'm going to do. And so for me, if it's
  111. 3:39basically preparation is just a stage of
  112. 3:41the work. And so, if I need to prepare
  113. 3:44to work, then that's fine as long as
  114. 3:45it's related to the work that I'm going
  115. 3:47to be doing.
  116. 3:48>> Real quick, if you're a business owner
  117. 3:49and you're are growing as fast as you'd
  118. 3:51like, I'd like to give you a free gift.
  119. 3:53So, my team and I put together the $100
  120. 3:56scaling roadmap, which is basically 200
  121. 3:58hours of us looking over all the
  122. 3:59portfolio companies we've had and what
  123. 4:01stages of growth they went through and
  124. 4:03more importantly, where they got stuck
  125. 4:05and how they got past it. And so, we
  126. 4:06broke it into these 10 stages and we
  127. 4:08made this little kind of quiz thing
  128. 4:10where if you put in your business
  129. 4:10information, it'll tell you where you're
  130. 4:12at and the most important part for you,
  131. 4:14what to do for each of functions of the
  132. 4:15business across product, marketing,
  133. 4:17sales, customer success, recruiting, IT,
  134. 4:19human resources, and finance. And so, no
  135. 4:21matter what you're struggling with,
  136. 4:22someone else has already struggled with
  137. 4:24it and solved it. And so, I'd like to
  138. 4:26give you this thing absolutely free. You
  139. 4:27can go to acquisition.com/roadmap,
  140. 4:29plug in your business information, and
  141. 4:31if you want us to actually help you
  142. 4:33deconstruct the business and you're
  143. 4:34trying to scale, we'd love to help you
  144. 4:36out. On the thank you page, you can just
  145. 4:37book a call with my team and we will
  146. 4:40look at the business, see if we can
  147. 4:42help, and if we can, we'll invite you
  148. 4:43out to Vegas and we'll do this in person
  149. 4:45live.
