- 0:06angels
- 0:08even if you haven't touched the bible
- 0:09you probably have an idea on what they
- 0:11look like
- 0:12they're those elegant heavenly beings
- 0:13with long white robes
- 0:15swan like wings and perhaps a halo on
- 0:16top for good measure we also know what
- 0:18angel babies or cherubs look like
- 0:21those small chubby cute infants clasping
- 0:23a bow and arrow
- 0:24the kind of thing you might see on a
- 0:25valentine's day card except well
- 0:27that's not what angels actually look
- 0:29like not according to the bible
- 0:31these are biblically accurate angels
- 0:46these horrifying abominations are more
- 0:47suited to an h.b lovecraft novel
- 0:49not really the bible so what are these
- 0:51things why do they look this way
- 0:54and how have we got angels so wrong
- 0:57okay so angels come from the old
- 0:59testament the first half of the bible
- 1:01for christians
- 1:01or the whole bible known as the tanakh
- 1:03for jews the old testament was written
- 1:06down in modern-day israel and palestine
- 1:08from about the 6th century bce to the
- 1:103rd century bce
- 1:12although many scholars believe the
- 1:13biblical stories themselves are much
- 1:15older
- 1:15we get the word angel from the greek
- 1:17angelos originally from the hebrew word
- 1:19malach
- 1:20which roughly translates to messenger
- 1:22these messengers
- 1:24appear in the old testament a number of
- 1:25times they carry god's messages from
- 1:27heaven and earth
- 1:28and sometimes act on his behalf for
- 1:30example you might recognize the angel of
- 1:32death in the passover story
- 1:34that slaughtered all the first sons of
- 1:36the egyptians
- 1:37or perhaps the angel that struck 70 000
- 1:39israelites to death
- 1:40and the angel that single-handedly
- 1:42killed 185
- 1:44000 assyrian soldiers in one night when
- 1:46they appear in the bible they are
- 1:47described as having wings
- 1:49in fact they look like any ordinary
- 1:51person
- 1:52in the later biblical texts such as
- 1:54daniel some even get names
- 1:56gabriel raphael and michael okay
- 2:00this all sounds familiar but they're not
- 2:01quite the nightmare material
- 2:03freak abominations we saw before the
- 2:05angels
- 2:06known as malach are not the only
- 2:08heavenly beings in the bible
- 2:10there's a hierarchy of them and
- 2:11depending on who you ask your classic
- 2:13humanoid angels
- 2:14are actually pretty far down the ladder
- 2:17in the middle ages
- 2:17a jewish scholar known as my modernities
- 2:19drew up a hierarchy of angels and if you
- 2:22look here
- 2:22your classic humanoid angels the malach
- 2:25are pretty low down
- 2:27but not quite as low as cherubim forget
- 2:29those chubby winged angels
- 2:31according to the bible cherubim are
- 2:33animal human hybrids
- 2:34the first time we see them is in the
- 2:36book of genesis right after adam and eve
- 2:38have been kicked out the garden
- 2:40their job is to guard the garden of eden
- 2:42from mankind
- 2:43our best description of cherubim comes
- 2:45to the book of ezekiel
- 2:47it opens with a prophet experiencing a
- 2:49profound vision in his vision
- 2:51ezekiel describes them as living
- 2:52creatures but they are later revealed in
- 2:54chapter 10
- 2:55as cherubim his account is as follows
- 2:58in the middle of it was something like
- 3:00four living creatures
- 3:02this was their appearance they were of
- 3:04human form
- 3:05each had four faces and each of them had
- 3:08four wings
- 3:09their legs were straight and their soles
- 3:11of their feet were like the sole of a
- 3:13calf's foot
- 3:14and they sparkled like burnished bronze
- 3:18under their wings on their four sides
- 3:20they had human hands
- 3:22and the four had their faces and their
- 3:24wings thus
- 3:25their wings touched one another each of
- 3:28them moved straight ahead without
- 3:29turning as they moved
- 3:31as for the appearance of their faces the
- 3:33four had the face of a human being
- 3:35the face of a lion on their right side
- 3:37the face of an ox on their left side
- 3:39and the face of an eagle such were their
- 3:42faces
- 3:43their wings were spread out above each
- 3:45creature had two wings
- 3:48each of which touched the wing of
- 3:49another while two covered their bodies
- 3:53each moved straight ahead wherever the
- 3:55spirit would go
- 3:56they went without turning as they went
- 3:59in the middle of the living creatures
- 4:01there was something that looked like
- 4:02burning coals of fire
- 4:04like torches moving to and fro among the
- 4:06living creatures
- 4:08the fire was bright and lightning issued
- 4:10from the fire
- 4:11the living creatures darted to and fro
- 4:14like a flash of lightning
- 4:16the cherubim don't look like your
- 4:17average angel instead
- 4:19they look more like the mythical beasts
- 4:21in ancient mesopotamia
- 4:23especially the babylonian iamasu which
- 4:25is the wings of an eagle
- 4:27the body of a lion and the head of a
- 4:28king these would act as guardians to
- 4:31sacred places like temples
- 4:32or the palace or city walls and
- 4:34performed a similar role to the biblical
- 4:36cherubim
- 4:37they look similar to their egyptian
- 4:39cousin the sphinx or the hittite griffin
- 4:41many believed that these biblical angels
- 4:43were descendants of these mythological
- 4:45creatures from mesopotamia
- 4:47there would have been a lot of cultural
- 4:48exchange and the same sorts of mythical
- 4:50creatures would crop
- 4:51up across these regions
- 4:55cherubim and later christianity may have
- 4:56been imported from greek and roman myths
- 4:59borrowing from the shapes of cupid or
- 5:01pluto
- 5:04moving up the list we get these guys
- 5:06seraphim
- 5:07they have six wings two used for flying
- 5:10and the other pair for covering the
- 5:11angel's face
- 5:12and the third pair for covering the
- 5:14angel's feet they're described in the
- 5:16book of isaiah
- 5:17as follows seraphs were in attendance
- 5:19above him
- 5:21each had six wings with two they covered
- 5:23their faces
- 5:24and with two they covered their feet and
- 5:26with two they flew
- 5:28and one called the other and said holy
- 5:31holy holy is the lord of hosts
- 5:33and the whole earth is full of his glory
- 5:36in medieval christian theology
- 5:38seraphim is the highest choir of the
- 5:40angelic hierarchy
- 5:42they are the caretakers of god's throne
- 5:44again continuously singing
- 5:46holy holy holy all day
- 5:49every day so seraphim their name comes
- 5:52from the word seraph
- 5:54to burn so seraphim may mean something
- 5:56like the burning ones
- 5:58okay where do they come from going
- 6:00further into seraphine's name
- 6:02reveals its origins the hebrew word for
- 6:04a venomous serpent of the desert
- 6:06is saraf in ancient egypt the cobra was
- 6:09often referred to as the flaming one
- 6:12an image of which called urayus was worn
- 6:14by the pharaoh
- 6:15thus saraf may be the hebrew term for
- 6:18cobra
- 6:19and perhaps where our seraphim get their
- 6:20winged appearance from
- 6:22now we're getting to the strangest
- 6:24beings in the bible the ophanim
- 6:26or simply known as the wheels they're a
- 6:29pair of interlocking gold wheels
- 6:31with eyes around the outside and they
- 6:34hover and float in the sky
- 6:36in the same vision as before ezekiel
- 6:38describes them alongside the cherubim
- 6:40quote as i look to the living creatures
- 6:43i saw a wheel on the earth beside the
- 6:45living creatures
- 6:46one for each of the four of them as for
- 6:49the appearance of the wheels and the
- 6:50construction
- 6:51their appearance was like the gleaming
- 6:53of beryl and the four had the same form
- 6:56their construction being something like
- 6:58a wheel within a wheel
- 7:01when they moved they moved in any of the
- 7:03four directions without veering as they
- 7:05moved
- 7:06their rims were tall and awesome for the
- 7:08rims of all four
- 7:10were full of eyes all around when the
- 7:13living creatures moved
- 7:14the wheels moved beside them and when
- 7:17the living creatures rose from the earth
- 7:19the wheels rose wherever the spirit
- 7:21would go
- 7:22they went and the wheels rose along with
- 7:25them
- 7:26for the spirit of the living creatures
- 7:28was in the wheels
- 7:30the wheels are beings who are meant to
- 7:31carry god's throne making them some of
- 7:34the holiest
- 7:34and certainly the strangest beings in
- 7:36the bible where do these wheels come
- 7:38from
- 7:39well no one really knows this one
- 7:41conspiracy theorists believe that
- 7:43ezekiel is describing ufo
- 7:45due to its strange shape and movement or
- 7:48perhaps
- 7:49seeing that this all takes place in a
- 7:50trippy vision it could be the product of
- 7:52the prophet ingesting a psychedelic
- 7:54plant
- 7:56more grounded scholars interpret the
- 7:57wheels metaphorically a stand-in for
- 7:59god's unknowability
- 8:01or some other often quite elaborate
- 8:02interpretation
- 8:04but ultimately no one really knows much
- 8:06more about the wheels
- 8:07they're never mentioned anywhere else
- 8:10there is some confusion about whether
- 8:12these eldritch abominations known as
- 8:14cherubim
- 8:14seraphim or ophanim are really actually
- 8:17angels
- 8:18perhaps heavenly being is a better
- 8:20description of them
- 8:22whatever it may be the bible's view of
- 8:24heaven is not the exclusive domain of
- 8:26these beautiful winged humanoids
- 8:28if heaven is in fact real you'll likely
- 8:30be spending a literal eternity alongside
- 8:33these winged monstrosities instead
- 8:36hey thanks to the end of this video i
- 8:38enjoyed this one about angels and their
- 8:40creepy origins
- 8:41if you want more like comment but most
- 8:43will subscribe to this channel
