- 0:00All right, we got the next generation
- 0:01[music] Silverado for a next generation
- 0:04NFL show.
- 0:05>> The Gruden family football show. I love
- 0:07it. Listen, Jay, I've [music] hosted a
- 0:09lot of shows in my day. I know what I'm
- 0:11doing. Just follow my lead.
- 0:13>> Hey, I know football, too, man. That's
- 0:14why you begged me to be on the show,
- 0:16right? I didn't beg you.
- 0:18>> Yes, you did.
- 0:18>> I didn't.
- 0:19>> Did too.
- 0:20>> I never said that. [music]
- 0:21>> Guys, guys, you're the Gruden brothers.
- 0:22Of course, you both know football. Can
- 0:24we please start the show?
- 0:26>> Let's do it.
- 0:45Welcome to the Gruden Family Football
- 0:47Show presented by the Chevy Silverado.
- 0:49Week two of the NFL coming in hot. And
- 0:51guys, I think we had a hell of a week
- 0:52one. I'm biased, but I think we I think
- 0:54we did pretty good. Pretty
- 0:55>> pretty good. I think we could get
- 0:56better, though. That's the goal is keep
- 0:58the train rolling.
- 0:59>> You got to get better every week.
- 1:01>> Of course,
- 1:01>> I'm the weak link. I'll I'll do my best.
- 1:03>> That's not true. That is not true. I had
- 1:05so many
- 1:05>> You are the weakest link.
- 1:06>> I Great show, by the way. I always
- 1:08wanted to be on it. I had so many people
- 1:09tell me like they were jealous that two
- 1:11brothers just got to sit and talk
- 1:12football. And I was like, "Yeah, cuz
- 1:13they're the best at it." You know this.
- 1:15>> My oldest brother, Jim, called. He's
- 1:17like, "You guys get to sit next to
- 1:19Casey."
- 1:19>> Oh, please.
- 1:20>> For an hour and a half. [laughter]
- 1:22>> I'll take that. Thanks, Jim. Uh, week
- 1:24one though it was the highest scoring
- 1:27week one ever, coach. That is absolutely
- 1:29amazing stat. And when you look at the
- 1:30games, there were a lot of offenses
- 1:32firing in all cylinders. What's the
- 1:34biggest takeaway from that?
- 1:35>> The biggest takeaway is it was the worst
- 1:38opening day in history for tackling on
- 1:40defense. I mean, let's be honest, some
- 1:42of these runs and some of these plays
- 1:45was because of inept tackling. And it's
- 1:47a reflection of how we practice, Jay.
- 1:49Everything's a walk through.
- 1:51Everything's modified. The Broncos
- 1:53missed 25 tackles in one game. They
- 1:54didn't miss 25 tackles the last half of
- 1:56the season, but we got to address the
- 1:58tackling. I'm watching the Chicago Bears
- 2:00score 60 points, and a lot of it was
- 2:03just horrific, awful pad level and
- 2:06tackling, and we talked about that at
- 2:08the top of the show last week.
- 2:09>> Fans love highscoring games. We want to
- 2:11see offense, but from a coaching
- 2:12standpoint, you're looking at the
- 2:14defense like what is going on in week
- 2:16one?
- 2:16>> There's a lot going on. There was some
- 2:18magnificent play by the offense, too.
- 2:20Let's not get it twisted. There were
- 2:21some really good plays and there were
- 2:22some turnovers that called co cause
- 2:24short area fields some easy points as
- 2:26well. So I think there it's a a little
- 2:28bit of both. Poor tackling, poor
- 2:30defense, but some really good offensive
- 2:31football play
- 2:32>> which is always exciting. I love when
- 2:34points are scored, coach. But you're
- 2:35saying the tackling was pissed.
- 2:36>> I like to see offensive execution.
- 2:37[laughter]
- 2:38I like to see an offense earn it.
- 2:40>> Just hate to see a guy run down there
- 2:42and miss three tackles.
- 2:43>> He made a miss, John. He made a miss.
- 2:45>> Let's get on with it.
- 2:46>> Good running [laughter] back coaches,
- 2:47right?
- 2:48>> Yeah. Yeah. I mean, listen, somebody's
- 2:49always happy when when somebody misses a
- 2:51tackle, you know, it just depends on
- 2:52what side you're on. So, you every week,
- 2:54coach, you're going to pull out just
- 2:55what the freak happened. What what
- 2:57happened with these teams? What was
- 2:59going on with the Chargers? They lose 26
- 3:01to 14 to the Cardinals. Turnovers on
- 3:04downs, Justin Herbert interception, all
- 3:05the things that went wrong. We didn't
- 3:07expect that from this team.
- 3:08>> Expect it at all. They're 10 and a half
- 3:10point favorites. They're playing a team
- 3:12Arizona with a new coach. You should win
- 3:15your home opener. They got the Raiders
- 3:17coming this week. They better pick it
- 3:18up. We'll get into them later, but that
- 3:20was awful. The Broncos really ticked me
- 3:23off. I mean, you got to be kidding me on
- 3:25national TV. That was not good. The
- 3:28Rams, they had 32 hours to think about
- 3:30what happened to them on the airplane.
- 3:33They got their butt kicked by the
- 3:34nemesis, the San Francisco 49ers. The
- 3:37Carolina Panthers were the most
- 3:39disappointing for me. They gave a lot of
- 3:41money to Phillips, a ton of money to
- 3:45Devin Lloyd to come in and play
- 3:46linebacker. They got their asses kicked.
- 3:49And I couldn't believe Buffalo scored 36
- 3:51points against the Houston Texans
- 3:53defense.
- 3:54>> There's a lot of WTF, Jay. There was a
- 3:57lot of things going on. You know, he was
- 3:58probably sitting at home just screaming
- 3:59at the TV.
- 4:00>> Yeah, I think you I think you hit on the
- 4:01head with the Chargers number one. When
- 4:03you're a 10 and a half point favorite at
- 4:04home, you got to win that game. And they
- 4:06started out actually pretty good on
- 4:07offense. They've made some big plays and
- 4:09then all of a sudden Arizona made some
- 4:11plays and then you look in the fourth
- 4:12quarter, holy crap, we're down nine. We
- 4:14better pick it up. It's too late.
- 4:16Arizona already smelled blood and they
- 4:18kicked their ass. It was beautiful to
- 4:19watch by Arizona. I was I was happy for
- 4:20Arizona and their coaches.
- 4:22>> When you look at the Rams, I know you
- 4:23talked about it and you think about all
- 4:24the time they had, but a lot of people
- 4:25saying like, "How much do we put this on
- 4:27the travel to Australia?" Because we we
- 4:29shredded it last week. We all hate
- 4:31international games. We know. How much
- 4:33do you put it on there? Just that insane
- 4:35schedule.
- 4:36>> Yeah, I put a lot on there. I mean, you
- 4:38ever flown on a plane 16 hours? The last
- 4:40thing you want to do is go play the San
- 4:41Francisco 49ers and have Fred Warner
- 4:44plant your ass. You know, you probably
- 4:46need to get yourself a couple good
- 4:47nights of sleep, get acclimated to the
- 4:49time zone,
- 4:50>> but the 49ers punched the Rams right in
- 4:53the mouth. And I think all these
- 4:55offseason moves, all the money they
- 4:57spent, all these MVP uh offseason
- 5:00glamour awards they got, I think it
- 5:02really motivated the 49ers. And last I
- 5:04checked, San Francisco still's got a
- 5:06great roster. Be interesting to see the
- 5:08Rams on Monday night.
- 5:09>> Well, Jay, you and I both took the Rams
- 5:11for our Super Bowl futures, which was
- 5:12not great after watching that game. And
- 5:13I know it's only week one and they only
- 5:15traveled 28 hours before kickoff, but
- 5:17they got physically dominated in that
- 5:19game. And I understand the travel's
- 5:20crazy, but that was a little bit
- 5:21alarming.
- 5:22>> The one thing that happens against the
- 5:2349ers, if you're trailing the 49ers late
- 5:26in the third, fourth quarter, they're
- 5:27going to pound you into submission. They
- 5:29have KD and Trent Williams. I mentioned
- 5:30that last week. That's what happened.
- 5:32The defensive line got tired. the
- 5:33safeties didn't want to come up and make
- 5:35tackles. Uh it was just a bloodbath from
- 5:38a line of scrimmage standpoint. 49ers
- 5:40dominated the line of scrimmage on
- 5:42defense, which I didn't expect, but the
- 5:43Rams usually have a pretty good
- 5:44defensive line. Had a great rotation
- 5:46last year against the 49ers. That
- 5:48rotation, they were they were gassed.
- 5:49The defensive line was gassed.
- 5:51>> And one more WTF coach, Cam Ward. We
- 5:53talked about him last week. What is
- 5:55going on with that offense?
- 5:57>> I don't know. He averaged 5.3 yards per
- 5:59carry, but 4.4 yards per pass. I mean,
- 6:02they don't complete a pass over 10 yards
- 6:04down the field. They had one touchdown,
- 6:06I think, in six possessions in the
- 6:08preseason. I kept hearing this excuse.
- 6:10This will come around. We'll be all
- 6:12right. It's 20 to3 Jets and they scored
- 6:15a meaningless [laughter] garbage
- 6:17touchdown. They got
- 6:19>> to find some way to move the ball, but
- 6:22Cam just looks out of rhythm. There
- 6:24doesn't seem to be any [music] life
- 6:26coming out of the huddle with these
- 6:28Tennessee Titans. And they got these
- 6:30uniforms. They sure look pretty.
- 6:32>> They do look pretty. They're very pretty
- 6:34colors.
- 6:34>> They don't help them play good. And
- 6:36every time I see Ward wearing Warren
- 6:38Moon's number, I wonder maybe he should
- 6:40earn that number before he wears that
- 6:42guy's number.
- 6:42>> Yeah. What happened to look good, feel
- 6:44good, play good? I mean, what's going on
- 6:45with him? Where was Calvin Ridley, Jay?
- 6:47He just didn't exist.
- 6:49>> We need to call him, find out where he's
- 6:50at. I haven't seen him since he went to
- 6:52Tennessee, to be honest with you. And uh
- 6:53they have a lot of issues. They can't
- 6:55run the ball. They can't protect. They
- 6:56can't throw it. They really can't stop
- 6:58anybody. I don't know what they're good
- 6:59at. They kick the opening kickoff out of
- 7:01bounds. I mean, it's a bad bad bad time
- 7:04to be a Titan fan.
- 7:05>> Well, we talked about the new head
- 7:06coaches and you know, six of them, you
- 7:09got to credit mentor in Baltimore,
- 7:11Laflur, Kubiaak, Brady, the two
- 7:13veterans, McCarthy and Harbaugh did
- 7:15well, but these four head coaches who
- 7:17did not win, I'm talking Jeff Halfley in
- 7:19Miami, Coach Mon with the Cleveland
- 7:23Browns, Stfansky in Atlanta, and Coach
- 7:26[music] Salah with the Titans. Those
- 7:28four teams, they got a long way to go,
- 7:30man. They might not win a game anytime
- 7:32[music] soon.
- 7:33>> I mean, week one, we said going into
- 7:35when you're a new head coach, even if
- 7:37you're just with a new team, there's a
- 7:38lot of jitters, a lot of nerves. So, any
- 7:40grace for them at all, coach?
- 7:43>> Let's get on with the show.
- 7:45>> Okay. Well, then this is where I'm going
- 7:47to I'm going to have to give Jay a
- 7:48little bit more credit because we do
- 7:49keep track because we're taking uh bets.
- 7:52You're you're getting a new suit. You're
- 7:53getting a new set of
- 7:55>> I was getting fitted the other day. I'm
- 7:57already
- 7:57>> Oh, yeah.
- 7:58>> I'm already planning on the victory.
- 7:59>> He's already planning on a victory after
- 8:00week one. So Jay went 10 and six. You
- 8:03went eight and eight. You went 500. But
- 8:04I have to point this out because very
- 8:06rarely did I think you guys would agree
- 8:08on a lot of games. But there were five
- 8:10different games you both agreed on and
- 8:11were wrong on. That was the Dallas game,
- 8:13the Denver game, the Indianapolis game,
- 8:15the Chargers, and the Rams. So maybe you
- 8:17guys need to argue a little bit more.
- 8:19>> Well, most of America was wrong on those
- 8:21games as well.
- 8:22>> That's fair. That's fair. I'm not trying
- 8:23to throw you under the bus.
- 8:25What's coming out of the tunnel? You
- 8:26don't know what's coming out of the
- 8:27tunnel until week three or four.
- 8:30>> We'll get better this week. I promise
- 8:31you.
- 8:31>> You got to get a get right week. You got
- 8:33to catch up on your little brother. You
- 8:34can't let little brother beat you
- 8:36around, can you?
- 8:37>> No, I can't do that. All right, let's go
- 8:39to the prime time picks presented by
- 8:40DraftKings. Football season [music] is

- 9:09[music] crown is yours. All right, John.
- 9:11We're going to start with the Cincinnati
- 9:12Bengals at the Houston Texans. Now, we
- 9:15saw the Bengals beat your Bucks. I'm
- 9:16sorry. You were texting the group text.
- 9:18You were you were saying, "Listen, what
- 9:20kind of car do you like, Casey?" Because
- 9:21I said the Bengals are going to go to
- 9:22the Super Bowl. The Texans lose to the
- 9:25Bills. Where do you want to go with
- 9:26this? Because there's a lot of different
- 9:27ways we could go with this.
- 9:28>> I want to give you this turnover
- 9:30necklace here.
- 9:31>> I got to take Thank you. I got to take
- 9:33my take my coat off here. Okay.
- 9:35>> The Bengals force four turnovers. And
- 9:38they were really careless turnovers by
- 9:40the Bucks. I mean, the guys are swinging
- 9:42the ball. They're changing it in
- 9:43traffic. They got the ball in the wrong
- 9:45hand. But Cincinnati wins because of
- 9:48their defense and those turnovers.
- 9:50>> And Houston loses because of their
- 9:53defense. I mean, they got mossed, man.
- 9:55They gave up 52 plays for 410 yards. So,
- 9:59I did not see that coming. I would not
- 10:01want to be Cincinnati this week because
- 10:03I guarantee you Demetico Ryan, Stingley,
- 10:06Will Anderson, Denil Hunter, they got
- 10:08the red ass this week. They're like,
- 10:10"LET'S GET THIS [ __ ] GOING." BUT I COULD
- 10:12JUST feel the Texans at home getting
- 10:15right against Joe Burrow and the
- 10:17Bengals. I didn't see any Jamar Chase
- 10:19last week. The Bengals really didn't
- 10:22force Tampa to punt. I still think
- 10:24they're a paper champion right now, but
- 10:26I love I like Houston in this game to
- 10:28get right.
- 10:29>> But the turnover chain looks good
- 10:30though. And
- 10:30>> it does look good. It does look good.
- 10:32You know, um
- 10:33>> who's that guy Amarius Mil? Was that
- 10:35Remember that guy Bane you were talking
- 10:36about? Yeah. Bane didn't even get a
- 10:38fingerprint on Bose jersey. Not a
- 10:40fingerprint. All right, they can protect
- 10:42the passer now. I like it. And Jamar
- 10:44Chase didn't have an impact. I think we
- 10:46NEED TO CALL
- 10:46>> A FINGERPRINT. [laughter]
- 10:48>> WE GOT TO call Joe Burrow and introduce
- 10:50him to his star player, Jamar Chase. He
- 10:52had him a couple times, worked the other
- 10:54side, which I don't understand. They had
- 10:55a 4x1 at the goal line. Chase just beats
- 10:58on our bullet slant we talked about.
- 10:59Beat him like a drum and he threw it to
- 11:01the flat for a loss of two. Uh but Chase
- 11:03will be a problem this week for the
- 11:04Texans. Uh the Bengals can run the ball
- 11:07effectively. The Bengals have four new
- 11:09starters on defense. They all provided
- 11:10some uh impact plays. Very, very good.
- 11:13And then defensively, they're chasing
- 11:16the ball. They're making plays. They're
- 11:17they're exciting to watch. They believe
- 11:19in each other. You know what I mean?
- 11:20They they didn't punt, but they got four
- 11:22turnovers. That's like four punts,
- 11:23right? That's even better.
- 11:24>> My only concern is Dalton Concincaid. He
- 11:28shredded the Texans secondary.
- 11:30>> Shredded.
- 11:31>> Late in the game, did you see how Palmer
- 11:33scored? I mean, they got Bulock, their
- 11:35Pro Bowl safety, and Blankenship. They
- 11:37are scared to death of Concaid. They
- 11:40double him in and out. It's a clear
- 11:42double. And guess what? Our star corner
- 11:45Lacier loses his leverage and Joshua
- 11:48Palmer shreds him. They weren't on point
- 11:50at all. They were doing things I have
- 11:52not seen the Texans do ever. They were
- 11:54out of character, but I think we got
- 11:56some players on this Houston defense
- 11:58that are going to really rev it up.
- 11:59>> Well, I mean, when you look at the fact
- 12:01that they got torched by Josh Allen,
- 12:02it's not like they have some slapstick
- 12:04coming in at quarterback. They have Joe
- 12:05Burrow coming in. But I do want to talk
- 12:06about CJ Stout because we talked about
- 12:08him a little bit last week. He did have
- 12:10the two fumbles, but he played pretty
- 12:12well. Do you expect to see this offense
- 12:13take that next step against Cincinnati's
- 12:16defense?
- 12:16>> I love the addition of David Montgomery.
- 12:18He had a big impact on the offense. Nico
- 12:20Collins always a big play waiting to
- 12:21happen. I just still worried about the
- 12:23offensive line. I think the juryy's
- 12:24still in deliberation about how good
- 12:26this offensive line has improved to
- 12:28protect them. I feel like sometimes CJ's
- 12:30a little bit giddy in the pocket still.
- 12:31He doesn't really trust his offensive
- 12:33line. They need to get better for him,
- 12:34especially in known passing situations.
- 12:36But the additional Montgomery will help
- 12:38him a lot.
- 12:38>> All right. So, Texans or Bengals?
- 12:40>> I'm going all in on the [music] Texans.
- 12:42>> You just don't want me to win a new
- 12:43card, do you? That's what you don't want
- 12:44to
- 12:45>> get rid of that deck.
- 12:45>> No, I'm keeping this on. This is mine
- 12:47now. You gave this to me. It's mine. Who
- 12:49you taking?
- 12:49>> I love the Bengals in this game, but I'm
- 12:51taking the Texans.
- 12:53>> They're at home and they're kind of
- 12:54coming. Some kind of a politician
- 12:57[ __ ]
- 12:58>> You love that, but you're taking the
- 13:00Texans. I mean, I just I just have a at
- 13:02home. They're going to come back and
- 13:04recover from a tough loss against
- 13:05Buffalo. That's all. I mean,
- 13:07>> so you you're on his side.
- 13:08>> Josh Allen escaped the pocket a couple
- 13:09times, made some plays with his legs.
- 13:11Burl won't do that as much.
- 13:13>> Just just know that after this game at
- 13:15about 4:00, I'm going to be texting both
- 13:17of you. See, I see. I told you so. Or if
- 13:19you don't hear from me, you guys were
- 13:20right. Let's go to Sunday Night
- 13:21Football. The Colts at the Chiefs. Jay,
- 13:23I will start with you. You You look at
- 13:25what the Colts defense. We talk about
- 13:26bad defense. They gave up 506 yards last
- 13:29week to the Ravens. The Chiefs beat the
- 13:31Broncos. Everybody's happy Patrick
- 13:33Mahomes is back. But I want to focus on
- 13:35the Colts. How do they fix this defense
- 13:37going into Arrowhead against Patrick
- 13:39Mahomes in this offense?
- 13:40>> Lamar and Derrick Henry are gone. That
- 13:42helps a lot because those two sons of
- 13:44guns were awesome in that game. I think
- 13:45it's a sense of urgency big time for
- 13:47Shane Striken and the Colts off Colts
- 13:49whole organization right now. They got
- 13:51to figure out something. That was an
- 13:53embarrassing first game for them. I know
- 13:54it's Baltimore, but we picked both
- 13:55picked Indie, right? We thought they had
- 13:57a better defense. We thought Daniel
- 13:59Jones coming back would be a big boost
- 14:00for their offense because they were at
- 14:02one time last year seven and two. I
- 14:04think they've lost 10 games in a row
- 14:05when D since Daniel Jones got hurt. So,
- 14:07they got to turn around quick. And I
- 14:08think it's time for them this year
- 14:10against Kansas City to really make a
- 14:12statement that, hey, we're not dead yet.
- 14:14We're dying a slow death right now, but
- 14:16we got to come back and play our best
- 14:17game against Kansas City. It's going to
- 14:18be hard because Daniel Jones was
- 14:20struggling versus pressure. Spags is one
- 14:23of the best pressure coaches in the
- 14:24National Football League and he sense
- 14:26blood. He's going to come after Daniel
- 14:27Jones. See if they can pick it up.
- 14:28>> What do you see from the Chiefs and the
- 14:30Colts, coach?
- 14:31>> I just love the new identity of the
- 14:33Kansas City Chiefs. I mean, we talked
- 14:34about Eric Benemy coming back with this
- 14:36hard-nosed running game. And Kenneth
- 14:39Walker like Jim Brown. I mean, this guy
- 14:41had 175 yards. He was running. I mean,
- 14:45he was running through Denver. And
- 14:47that's not a chop liver defense, but you
- 14:49know, from the Colts defensive
- 14:51standpoint, usually as a defense, you
- 14:53try to take away what the offense does
- 14:56best. Well, Lamar Jackson had a 124 QB
- 14:59rating. Zay Flowers had 150 yards on
- 15:01five catches and King Henry ran for 144
- 15:04yards, three touchdowns. They got their
- 15:06butt kicked by everything that Baltimore
- 15:08wanted to do. And I don't recognize some
- 15:11of the players playing on the Colts
- 15:12defense either. Nick Cross is gone. Zire
- 15:15Franklin is gone. And you know, Buckner
- 15:18said it well. DeForest Buckner comes out
- 15:19and says, "We got our ass kicked." And I
- 15:22was nodding my head. I said, "You're god
- 15:23dang right you did." Kansas City has a
- 15:26new attitude. They got a new approach to
- 15:29playing football. They were under the
- 15:31center. They were accommodating Kenneth
- 15:33Walker and everybody was interested in
- 15:35blocking. And when you got Creed
- 15:37Humphrey and Trey Smith and you got Andy
- 15:39Reid and you have an off seasonason of
- 15:41going six and 11, they came out with an
- 15:43edge. They were pissed off and they took
- 15:45it to Denver now and they're going to
- 15:47take it to the Colts at home. Go two and
- 15:490. And I love null Williams the young
- 15:52corner of the Chiefs.
- 15:53>> I don't know if Mansour Delane's going
- 15:55to play. He got hurt, but he had a
- 15:56beautiful interception. Legerious Sneeed
- 15:58came back and made four or five open
- 16:00field tackles.
- 16:01>> How about our Mason Thomas? I mean, he
- 16:03had a great sack. I love the Chiefs. I
- 16:06think Andy Reid has done a great job
- 16:08getting this club ready to go.
- 16:09>> How How does Spags keep doing it? It
- 16:11seems like he just
- 16:12>> takes a board and changes a name and
- 16:14they they're dominant every single year.
- 16:16>> How does Andy Reid keep his staff
- 16:18together? I mean, you got not only
- 16:20Spags, but Merritt's a great secondary
- 16:22coach. They got Joe Coen coaching the
- 16:24Dline. I mean, this guy's kept his staff
- 16:26together. Dave Tob on special teams. You
- 16:29just got the enemy back. Uh Andy Hex,
- 16:31the offensive line coach. They've had
- 16:33great continuity on this staff. They
- 16:36know how to adapt and they know how to
- 16:38evolve. and Indianapolis is next. Poof.
- 16:42They're gonna knock [laughter] the Colts
- 16:43out.
- 16:43>> I know this is a buzz word, but it's
- 16:45like it's the culture of the Kansas City
- 16:46Chiefs. They do keep re rebuilding. When
- 16:48you look at Patrick Mahomes, you said
- 16:50fans were going to cry. Did you see any
- 16:51any fans crying?
- 16:52>> Well, I didn't they didn't show it, you
- 16:54know, but I guarantee you when he was
- 16:55coming out of the tunnel. I could feel
- 16:58the electricity
- 16:59>> and now there's happy tears.
- 17:01>> Andy was crying. Andy Reed was crying.
- 17:03[laughter]
- 17:04>> I bet you're And you're taking the
- 17:06Chiefs as well or
- 17:07>> I'm taking the Chiefs. Hell, there's no
- 17:09way I could take the Colts after that.
- 17:1059 yards of offense they gave up last
- 17:12week. They didn't stop anything. Pass,
- 17:14run, quarterback designed run, whatever.
- 17:17It was whatever they wanted to call,
- 17:18Doyle wanted to call with Baltimore. It
- 17:20worked to perfection
- 17:21>> and now they have to walk into
- 17:22Arrowhead. That cannot that cannot feel.
- 17:24They're going to be the ones that are
- 17:25crying. All right, coach. I'm going to
- 17:26put you on the hot seat here with the
- 17:27Monday Night Football. The New York
- 17:28Giants at the Rams. But before we get to
- 17:30this game, we saw what the Giants did
- 17:33against the Dallas Cowboys. And I know I
- 17:35know we're going to talk about him
- 17:36later, but you were so high on the
- 17:38Dallas Cowboys, but the question is, how
- 17:40real are these New York Giants? You look
- 17:42at what Jackson Dart was able to do in
- 17:43that offense. You look at what with John
- 17:45Harbaugh, how different they looked. Was
- 17:48it more about the Cowboys letting you
- 17:49down or the Giants kind of giving you
- 17:50some confidence?
- 17:51>> Well, it was a combination of both. But
- 17:52I credit the Giants. I mean, they played
- 17:54great football and we did not have any
- 17:57idea what they were going to look like
- 17:59on offense. I mean, if Jackson Dart can
- 18:02stay out of that [music] pent, you said
- 18:03it last week, he could become the next
- 18:05great quarterback in the NFL. There's no
- 18:07doubt about it. But what I [music] love
- 18:08about the Giants is their opening drive
- 18:11of the game, their opening drive of the
- 18:13second half. They were methodical. They
- 18:15had three drives of 10 plays or more
- 18:17that scored touchdowns. They had the
- 18:18ball the whole night. They were on
- 18:20schedule. They had third and one, third
- 18:21and one, third and one, third and two.
- 18:23Convertible third downs. They converted
- 18:25nine out of 11. And it's a combination
- 18:28of offenses. I mean, I see the Lamar
- 18:31Jackson stuff that Greg Roman ran with
- 18:34Baltimore. Then I see 72X shallow cross
- 18:37and 383 Y sticky from the Andy Reid
- 18:40offense. I even saw a couple Joe Burrow
- 18:42plays that Brian Callahan brought in
- 18:44from Cincinnati. And I'll say this, Dart
- 18:47showed me a lot. Now, that throw to
- 18:49likely on third down and nine to start
- 18:51the third quarter. He got hit right in
- 18:53his face by Quinn and Williams. That's
- 18:54as good as you could play the position.
- 18:56And then he checked the ball down on
- 18:58third and nine to Singleton for a first
- 18:59down. Dart could be a superstar. He's
- 19:02got to stay out of that tent. He's got
- 19:04to keep his emotions in check. And their
- 19:06defense to me still has a lot to prove
- 19:08because Dallas wasn't on the field at
- 19:10all.
- 19:10>> Well, and they were nine for 10 on third
- 19:12down. And just the way that Jackson Dart
- 19:14played and the energy they have, they
- 19:15have those weapons now. It's hard not to
- 19:17get excited if you're a New York Giants
- 19:19fan.
- 19:19>> Fired up. The two additions from
- 19:20Baltimore are very important. Patrick
- 19:22Ricard and Isaiah Likely. These two guys
- 19:24balled out. likely had two touchdowns.
- 19:26Ricard just does everything. He pass
- 19:28protects. He leads up on linebackers. He
- 19:30blocks defensive ends. He does the power
- 19:31blocking. He's one of the most fun guys
- 19:33to watch. 290 pounds. He's everywhere.
- 19:36What a great addition for a team that
- 19:37wants to establish the line of scrimmage
- 19:39and play physical. Let's go get Patrick
- 19:41Ricard and let him lead up in motion and
- 19:43cut off the backside, lead up on the
- 19:45linebackers. Um Scataboo, what can you
- 19:47say about him? He gets the tough yards.
- 19:48He's a great ball carrier. And then
- 19:50Malik Neighbors coming back from his
- 19:51injury playing through injury. I guess
- 19:53Harbaugh tacked him tackled him in
- 19:55pregame warm-up. He decided to play uh
- 19:57made a big impact in the game. But
- 19:59Jackson Dart, you're right, I think
- 20:00played outstanding game, was very
- 20:01efficient, converted critical plays when
- 20:03he needed to to keep drives alive. The
- 20:05time of possession was ridiculous. So,
- 20:06hats off to the Giants and coach
- 20:08Harbaugh in the staff.
- 20:09>> Hey, how about how about Odell? How
- 20:10about Odell Beckham? Okay, I mean last
- 20:13week was pissed off.
- 20:14>> He doesn't catch a pass, [laughter] but
- 20:16on the opening drive, they run X shallow
- 20:18cross. He's the X and they they cover
- 20:20him with about three Cowboys and there's
- 20:22likely first and goal at the one and
- 20:24then on the second half he motions
- 20:25across. They ran a Z-spot route. I have
- 20:28no idea what Don Bland is doing. They're
- 20:30playing quarters coverage. He covers
- 20:33Odell Beckham and there's likely wide
- 20:35open uh still today Odell Beckham
- 20:39bothers people and he has an influence
- 20:41on the game and it's a credit to
- 20:44Harbaugh and this coaching staff for
- 20:46using Ricard using Odell getting
- 20:48neighbors ready to play bringing on
- 20:51Jackson Dart and developing this system.
- 20:53I was really impressed.
- 20:54>> Yeah, it was awesome. And I know our
- 20:56caller last week on the shredline did
- 20:57not want Odell back on this roster, but
- 20:59as long as he's on the roster, they're
- 21:00going to focus on him and other guys are
- 21:02going to be open. I know we talked about
- 21:03the Rams a little bit off the top of the
- 21:05show, but they lose Miles Garrett
- 21:06already. He's on the Aaron Donald is
- 21:08hopeful as of when we are are recording
- 21:10this today. Do you think they can get
- 21:11back on track now that they don't have
- 21:12to play overseas?
- 21:14>> I do. I think they're very good running
- 21:15the football. They're going to control
- 21:16the line of scrimmage. They do 13
- 21:18personnel quite well. Matthew Stappard
- 21:20is very, very, very good with the play
- 21:21action game. They still got Puka,
- 21:22Devonte. I think they'll be fine
- 21:24offensively. It's defensively I have a
- 21:26concern with their depth on the
- 21:27defensive line. The linebacking
- 21:29linebacker play wasn't very good. Safety
- 21:31play with their fills uh weren't very
- 21:33good. I think coach Schula has a lot to
- 21:34do this week in practice.
- 21:36>> All right. Who we taking?
- 21:38>> Who we taking, guys?
- 21:39>> Go ahead, Jay.
- 21:40>> I'm taking the Rams. I think the Rams
- 21:42bounced back in a big way. And I I I
- 21:45want to see, like you mentioned before,
- 21:46the Giant defense. They were not a field
- 21:47a whole lot. I know they played pretty
- 21:49good, but I still think the Rams come
- 21:51out on top. You know, I had this thing
- 21:53when I was coaching when we got our butt
- 21:55kicked, our whole coaching staff, we had
- 21:58to red and we were not going to let it
- 21:59happen again. So, whoever we played next
- 22:01week, and I got a feeling about the
- 22:03Rams, you know, they're coming off a
- 22:05very tough opening day game. And I'm
- 22:08sure Sean McVey and this coaching staff
- 22:10is going to have these guys ready to
- 22:11play. I'm counting on the Rams winning
- 22:13this game, but I'm very impressed with
- 22:15the Giants progress.
- 22:16>> Yeah, the Super Bowl favorites losing
- 22:18that way, albeit it was overseas, it was
- 22:20kind of disappointing. I would assume
- 22:21that they're going to come out, but I I
- 22:22don't know what it is. I want to see
- 22:23Jackson Dart win.
- 22:24>> I do, too.
- 22:24>> I want to see him win. This guy's
- 22:25electric. I love it.
- 22:26>> Colts got their ass beat last week.
- 22:28Aren't they going to come out the red
- 22:29ass?
- 22:30>> Yeah. Well, they're going to come out
- 22:32red.
- 22:33>> They're [laughter] coming out red
- 22:34because their ass is still red from the
- 22:35beating.
- 22:36>> They might be able to to come out that
- 22:37way, but can they actually sustain it?
- 22:38Doesn't look like it. They got their
- 22:39asses beat. All right, it is time for
- 22:41Gruden's Greaseboard, which was an
- 22:43absolute hit in week one. It's presented
- 22:45by Chevy. The Grutten Family Football
- 22:46Show and Guten's Greaseboard is
- 22:48presented by the next generation Chevy
- 22:50Silverado. The most powerful and
- 22:51advanced Silverado ever. Combining
- 22:53serious capability, advanced technology,
- 22:55a bold, commanding design, and the kind
- 22:57of confidence you want when the pressure
- 22:58is on. Visit chevy.com to learn why the
- 23:00next generation Silverado is leading the
- 23:03league. And guys, our commercial looked
- 23:04great. Jay needs an Academy Award. This
- 23:06guy's an actor. He's great.
- 23:08>> He might have been one of the worst
- 23:09actors I've ever seen.
- 23:10>> I thought you were great. I thought you
- 23:12were great. You looked good driving the
- 23:14truck. And listen, I just had to to
- 23:15break up the fights.
- 23:16>> It took us three hours to make the
- 23:17commercial because he couldn't drive to
- 23:18a car.
- 23:20>> Yeah. Luckily, you had the Chevy
- 23:21Silverado to keep you in line. Let's go
- 23:23to Guden's Greece.
- 23:26>> All right, we're going to start with the
- 23:28Vikings at the Bears. Now, coach, the
- 23:29Vikings have won six straight at Soldier
- 23:32Field. So, that is not good for the
- 23:34Bears. However, you talked about this
- 23:35last week on the Grease board. What the
- 23:37Bears have been doing on offense,
- 23:38specifically in the run game, has been
- 23:40incredible. We saw how many points they
- 23:41scored last week. They're just going to
- 23:43keep building on this.
- 23:44>> Yeah, I give Ben Johnson a lot of
- 23:46credit. He and his coaching staff, but
- 23:48when I watched that Carolina game last
- 23:50week, it wasn't like they were curing
- 23:52diseases here. They ran the same play, I
- 23:54call it 12 duo out of the shotgun four
- 23:57times for four touchdowns. I mean,
- 24:00they're on the goal line. They hand the
- 24:02ball off and duo, we're going to get a
- 24:03double team. And on the goal line, this
- 24:06is Derek Brown of the Carolina Panthers,
- 24:09number 95. and Jonah Jackson and Darnell
- 24:12Wright is why we run right. They had a
- 24:15freeze deuce and they picked up Derek
- 24:18Brown and deposited him into the
- 24:20linebacker and he ran right off that
- 24:22double team and scored. And I'll say
- 24:23this, Colston Loveland at tight end. He
- 24:26brought Jaylen Phillips like he was a
- 24:28blocking slit. I mean, this guy walked
- 24:30into the end zone easy. The receiver
- 24:33came in short motion and Trayvon
- 24:35Merring, the safety, didn't look like he
- 24:37attacked that block. And I have no idea
- 24:39what Mike Jackson is doing because when
- 24:41that wide receiver cracks, you got to
- 24:43replace. And Jackson didn't do it twice.
- 24:46Manung guy went for 60. Swift went for
- 24:4835. And then what does Ben Johnson call
- 24:51in the one yard line? Let's go 12 duo.
- 24:54BOOM. IT WAS BOBBY BROWN. BOOM. DEREK
- 24:56BROWN. If Charlie Brown was playing for
- 24:58Carolina, he would have got his ass
- 25:00kicked. But they ran duo right down
- 25:03their throat. Where's that gunk? Huh?
- 25:06This is Carolina's run defense drop.
- 25:12>> It's heavy. Okay, Jay. It's heavy.
- 25:14>> So, for Bear fans, get excited about
- 25:16that. But Minnesota with Bryant Flores,
- 25:19we're going to get into them in a
- 25:21minute. They're going to run a lot of
- 25:22linebackers into these gaps. This play
- 25:25will have a lot harder time against
- 25:26Minnesota, but let's talk about Carson
- 25:29Wentz and the job he did for the
- 25:31Vikings. Kyler Murray goes out with a
- 25:33concussion early, but what impressed you
- 25:35about Carson Wentz last week?
- 25:36>> Well, as we heard about the off season
- 25:38was Kyler Murray versus JJ McCarthy.
- 25:41Carson Wentz is nowhere to be found.
- 25:42He's probably not getting any reps, but
- 25:44this veteran guy comes in here. Kyler,
- 25:46hey, Carson, get in here. He comes in
- 25:48there. He's just raw. Gets him on a hard
- 25:51count early in the game. Uh Justin
- 25:53Jefferson gets a go ball. Uh the Green
- 25:55Bay jumps off sides and it's the first
- 25:57touchdown Justin Jefferson scored in
- 25:58Minnesota in a year and a half. So
- 26:00that's on the quarterback. Great throw.
- 26:02Unbelievable catch by Justin Jefferson.
- 26:03But the quarterback pre- snap getting
- 26:05the defensive line to jump off sides.
- 26:07Having the ability to throw the ball
- 26:08deep for a touchdown was big. Then they
- 26:10get in the red zone. They call two jet
- 26:12broom exindividual. Ex-individual say
- 26:15runs a go ball. Broom is a play where
- 26:17Addison's going to run a double move.
- 26:19He's going to sell the UNDER AND THEN
- 26:20BOOM, take it to the back corner of the
- 26:22end zone. Our Z, our F receiver is going
- 26:24to run like he's running under, snap it
- 26:26back out for a quarterback safety valve.
- 26:28And our tight end TJ Hawinson gets a
- 26:30split safety. It's a big alert for a
- 26:32split safety. Now big alert. He's going
- 26:34to attack this linebacker and then go
- 26:36right down the middle of the field.
- 26:38Carson Wet sees the safety not in play.
- 26:40Sees TJ Hawinson and rips it to him for
- 26:42an easy touchdown. I mean, you got many
- 26:44answers here. You got that one. If it's
- 26:45single high safety, you got a
- 26:46possibility for the double move for
- 26:48Addison and then finish on this play. Or
- 26:50you get the receiver on the backside
- 26:52against cover zero. So it's a great
- 26:54all-purpose play, but Carson Wentz
- 26:56recognizes. the play he's run before and
- 26:58dropped the perfect throw to Hawkins.
- 26:59>> Why do you get the other touchdown on
- 27:01the boot?
- 27:02>> This boot is sick. You know, not many
- 27:04teams not many teams are going to slide
- 27:06the receiver that's on the ball, right?
- 27:08>> He's on the line of scrimmage.
- 27:09>> He's on the line of scrimmage. But first
- 27:10of all, they ran a lot of times this
- 27:12toss crack with the receiver blocking
- 27:14the end, fullback, tackle pulling. They
- 27:16ran it like five times in the game.
- 27:18>> So in the red zone, they said, "You know
- 27:19what? Let's run the toss sweep. He'll
- 27:23slide." Justin Jefferson. He takes a
- 27:24step back, slides behind the line of
- 27:26scrimmage. Tight end goes down like he's
- 27:29to the back corner. This guy's going to
- 27:31pin the defensive end. He's going to run
- 27:33a late down flat. Justin Jefferson
- 27:34outflanks his defense for two
- 27:36completions and one for a touchdown. I
- 27:38mean that you talk about full flow now.
- 27:40We got the fullback going. Tackles
- 27:42pulling. We are freaking rolling. And uh
- 27:44it was a great play.
- 27:45>> All right. So the big question is are
- 27:46the Vikings going to win seven straight
- 27:48at Soldier Field or the Bears snap this
- 27:50streak? This has a lot more than just
- 27:52these plays. You obviously Brian Flores,
- 27:54he blitzed 80% of the time last week.
- 27:57Now, he took advantage of a beat up
- 27:59backup group alignment in Green Bay.
- 28:01They kicked Green Bay's ass. They scored
- 28:0329 unanswered points. I've never seen
- 28:06anything like this. And some of the
- 28:07blitzes are one thing, but some of these
- 28:10coverages, they are vulnerable. Jordan
- 28:12Love threw for 400 yards. I think
- 28:14Chicago wins this game because of Caleb
- 28:17Williams legs. I mean, his scrambling,
- 28:20man. He scrambled for two touchdowns
- 28:22last week.
- 28:23>> Minnesota's got a bunch of young guys on
- 28:25this front. They do have some experience
- 28:27at linebacker, but I take the Bears on
- 28:30Caleb Williams scramble plays, and I
- 28:32think Ben Johnson has seen floor is
- 28:34enough. He'll have some answers against
- 28:36these blitz coverages.
- 28:37>> Yeah, Caleb William had Caleb Williams
- 28:38had four touchdowns last week.
- 28:40Unbelievable. But are you riding with
- 28:41your brother or are you going to go with
- 28:42the Vikings?
- 28:43>> Well, Ben Johnson will run the ball
- 28:44against the Vikings. There's no doubt
- 28:45about it. One thing Brian Flores will do
- 28:47is he'll give you a lot of different
- 28:48fronts. Six-man fronts, fiveman fronts
- 28:51to try to confuse the offensive lineman
- 28:53and stop the running game. The thing is,
- 28:55if I'm Kevin Oonnell, right, are you
- 28:57switching over to listen to the
- 28:58defensive calls? Are you going to close
- 29:00your eyes when he calls some of these
- 29:01cover zeros, the coverages that they're
- 29:03playing? Guys are wide open. Uh Jaden
- 29:06Reed had a little pop pass. If he
- 29:07catches, he runs for 50 yards and he
- 29:09dropped it. I mean, these guys are wide
- 29:11open, but he's counting on the pressure.
- 29:13He's dialed them up and it's been
- 29:15working. Although they did give up 400
- 29:17yards, but still it's a it's a roll the
- 29:19dice defense and I I just if I was a
- 29:21head coach, I'd be scared to death when
- 29:22they called these.
- 29:23>> Well, Harrison Smith is back. He's going
- 29:26to be on the line of scrimmage and he
- 29:28will look like he's blitzing. Now, he
- 29:29won't disappoint you. He almost peeled
- 29:31Aaron Rogers face off last year in
- 29:33[laughter] London. He got home THE OTHER
- 29:35THE GUY SHOOK. I'M COMING. I'M COMING.
- 29:37AND ALL OF A SUDDEN, HE'LL TAKE OFF AND
- 29:38RUN BACK to the deep half. He is a great
- 29:40disguise artist, but I can't imagine
- 29:42them getting away with some of these
- 29:44coverages they got away with last week.
- 29:45>> You freeze the film and guys are wide
- 29:47open, but the quarterback's on his back.
- 29:49So, I mean, what's the heck?
- 29:50>> It doesn't matter if we're wide open.
- 29:51Yeah, exactly. So, you're taking the
- 29:53Bears?
- 29:54>> I'm taking the Bears. I I like Carson
- 29:56Wentz, but I I'm not ready for him yet.
- 29:58But I am worried about the Bears
- 29:59defense. I mean, let's be honest. They
- 30:01gave up 480 yards to Bryce Young and the
- 30:03Panthers, who are one of the worst
- 30:05scoring defenses in football. I just
- 30:07don't feel any pass rush at all other
- 30:09than Montes Sweat and he gets tired at
- 30:11the end of the game. And all the guys
- 30:13that created the turnovers are gone. I
- 30:15mean, where the hell's Brisker and Kevin
- 30:17Bard and Tmaine Edmonds? They're not
- 30:19even in Chicago. So, the Bears defense
- 30:22against Justin Jefferson and this
- 30:24receiving CP of the Vikings. They better
- 30:26scrap it on and simplify things or
- 30:28they're in trouble.
- 30:29>> Yeah, they need to figure that out. The
- 30:30offense can do as much as they they did,
- 30:32but if the defense hasn't figured it
- 30:33out, it could be a long season. And we
- 30:35have to talk about, speaking of a long
- 30:36season, the Washington Commanders, Jay,
- 30:38they're playing the Dallas Cowboys.
- 30:40There are a lot of conversations going
- 30:41on about that two-point play call that
- 30:43they had against the Philadelphia
- 30:44Eagles. And I feel like fans are just up
- 30:46in arms about what happened. What did
- 30:48you see?
- 30:49>> Well, I think they're up in arms for
- 30:50good reason. They want their star
- 30:52player, J uh Jaden Daniels, to have the
- 30:54ball with the run pass type option. Yes,
- 30:56Stefon Diggs, you got Terry McLaren.
- 30:58They'd like him to have the option, not
- 30:59shovel pass it to John Bates for God's
- 31:02sakes. However, it was a perfect look.
- 31:04My god, if he told me I would get this
- 31:06look. This is the look. They run the
- 31:08shovel past the baits. They bring him in
- 31:11short motion to secure the look. They
- 31:13want to run this play only against the
- 31:15light box. And boy, did they get a light
- 31:17box. I mean, hell, Zack Bond moved out
- 31:19of the formation. And they get a double
- 31:22team at the point of attack. Coleman
- 31:24does a nice job. And they double team to
- 31:26the linebacker. And I'm telling you, the
- 31:28end, okay, the end. He reacts to Daniels
- 31:32and this flare by the back. He's He's
- 31:35gone. He's floating out here in the
- 31:37flat. Zack Bond's out here in the flat.
- 31:39And I'm telling you, here comes Sam
- 31:41Cosby, their best lineman. He's going to
- 31:43pull around the horn. There's not even
- 31:45Zack BOND THERE. HE'S GONE.
- 31:46>> GONE.
- 31:46>> HE'S PULLING AROUND AIR. The tackle does
- 31:49a nice job hard jabbing and picking on
- 31:51the backside. Here comes Bates. Daniels
- 31:54makes it looks like it's a sprint out
- 31:55pass. The end widens. BOND WIDENS.
- 31:58THERE'S NOBODY THERE. AND NICK already
- 32:00grey. Okay, I like Already. He's got
- 32:02MORORROW OMO IN THE PERFECT POSITION.
- 32:06DON'T GET BEAT OVER THE TOP, MORO.
- 32:08>> DON'T GET BEAT OVER THE TOP.
- 32:10>> ANYTHING.
- 32:10>> DON'T GET BEAT OVER THE TOP.
- 32:11>> DON'T DO IT.
- 32:12>> HE GETS BEAT WHERE? OVER THE TOP. AND
- 32:14MORORROW IS THE PLAYER OF THE YEAR. THIS
- 32:17SHOULD HAVE WALKED IN. I guarantee you
- 32:20the offensive coordinator Blau is up
- 32:22there going, "WE GOT HIM. WE GOT HIM."
- 32:24>> [laughter]
- 32:25>> AND HE'S GOT TO BE [ __ ] I MEAN, THIS
- 32:27HAS GOT TO BE THE MOST horrific feeling
- 32:29in the offensive staff room ever for the
- 32:31command. The play the play before they
- 32:34challenged that catch by Williams for a
- 32:35touchdown. Took like eight minutes. So,
- 32:37they had a long time. Talk to the
- 32:38lineman, talk to the tight end, talk to
- 32:40the quarterback about this play.
- 32:42>> Yeah. Centers, when you block back on
- 32:44the shovel pass, don't get beat over the
- 32:46top.
- 32:47>> You can't do it. You can't get beat over
- 32:48the top.
- 32:49>> You got beat over the top.
- 32:50>> You can't. So when you
- 32:50>> 2422
- 32:51>> when you look at this game with the
- 32:53Cowboys and the commanders in the
- 32:55starting 0 and2 when you're in the NFC
- 32:56East is not a good way to start out. So
- 32:58who's starting 0 and2 this week?
- 33:00>> I don't know. You know, you don't like
- 33:01to go outside with two black eyes, do
- 33:03you? No, you've got to win this game.
- 33:04There's a lot at stake when you start
- 33:06talking about, you know, tie breakers
- 33:08and things like that at the end of the
- 33:10season. I was with the Cowboys last
- 33:13week.
- 33:14>> I've been on their bandwagon.
- 33:16>> I think they're going to win this game
- 33:17at home. I think it's going to be tight.
- 33:19is going to be hard fought. I like
- 33:21Dallas. I think Christian Parker on
- 33:23defense, he's playing a lot of split
- 33:25safety shells. He are he is vulnerable
- 33:28against the the run though. But they are
- 33:30eliminating big plays and I can't
- 33:32imagine CD Lamb and George Pickkins
- 33:35being quiet again. I got to think
- 33:37they're going to have big days. I don't
- 33:39know what Sean Still is doing. He gave
- 33:41up 10 touchdowns last year. He got
- 33:43burned twice for touchdowns against
- 33:45Philly. I just think these receivers are
- 33:48going to expose this secondary and they
- 33:51had a hard time stopping Dallas GD down
- 33:53the middle. Dallas has too many weapons
- 33:55for the Commanders and they're going to
- 33:56win this game.
- 33:57>> Jay, what do you think?
- 33:57>> I don't disagree with anything he said,
- 33:59but I do think there might be a little
- 34:00blueprint out there to play the Cowboys.
- 34:02Let's get physical and bloody them.
- 34:04>> Bates comes in a game, two tight end
- 34:06sets, three tight end sets, and then we
- 34:07can get Jaden Daniels on the outside,
- 34:09some play actions, and let's get Terry
- 34:10Mcccluren going on some deep balls for
- 34:12God's sakes. Terry McLaren, he's number
- 34:1417. SCARY TERRY, MY BOY. SCARY TERRY,
- 34:18I'm telling you, we're going to hit some
- 34:20big plays down the field. I think it's
- 34:22going TO BE A SHOCKING shocking upset
- 34:24here in the greatest rivalry of all
- 34:26time. The Commanders, or Redskins, I
- 34:28should say, win it in a high-scoring
- 34:29game
- 34:30>> or the football team, depending on who
- 34:31you whatever, whatever you want to say.
- 34:32So, you don't think Scary Terry is scary
- 34:34anymore?
- 34:34>> Be nice if we threw him a pass. It'd be
- 34:36nice. I thought Antonio Williams was
- 34:38really good. I did like Stefan Diggs on
- 34:41the choice route against Cooper Deene.
- 34:43That's the first time I've seen somebody
- 34:45prove that the Gene is human, but they
- 34:48got to get Terry McLaren back involved
- 34:50in this offense. I do want to see the
- 34:53Commanders start faster. They were
- 34:54really sluggish and slow to start the
- 34:57game last week in Philly.
- 34:58>> Got to create some turnovers. If you're
- 35:00a center, don't get beat over them.
- 35:01Don't get BEAT UP.
- 35:02>> YOU GOT TO WEAR THE CHAIN STATE.
- 35:05[laughter]
- 35:06>> DON'T FIGHT, BOYS. I can't break up a
- 35:07physical fight. All right, our last
- 35:09grease board game. The Raiders at the
- 35:11Chargers. The Chargers have beaten the
- 35:12Raiders four straight times. Coach, you
- 35:14talk a lot about the way that that
- 35:15offense looked and what Justin Herbert
- 35:17had flying at him. How are they going to
- 35:19protect him this week?
- 35:20>> You say Raiders Chargers, that just gets
- 35:22my blood going, man.
- 35:23>> You know, the thing that really bothers
- 35:25me is Herbert, all the hits he takes. I
- 35:27keep hearing this and that about the
- 35:29tackles. Slater's out. Alt's out.
- 35:31They're all out. Well, this year
- 35:32Slater's back, Alt's back. Let me show
- 35:35you. Be a running back, Casey. Come
- 35:36here. You guys be running backs. Let's
- 35:38just say we have five linemen
- 35:40>> and we got two backs. That's seven. That
- 35:42means we got seven protectors. Let's
- 35:45just say Jay, he he goes out. He's free
- 35:47releasing now. How many backs? We got
- 35:49six. Are you guys with me now? Let's
- 35:51just say we put you out there in A
- 35:52NOBACK SET. NOW I GOT FIVE BLOCKERS.
- 35:55THIS IS what upsets me about the
- 35:57Chargers. We got a no back set and
- 35:59everybody knows we got five blockers. So
- 36:02Arizona covers the center and typically
- 36:05we make a 5-0 call. We're one-on-one
- 36:08with five guys. Five guys are blocking
- 36:11with no help, hence a 5-0 call. But
- 36:14here's another linebacker for Arizona.
- 36:16And here is the GREAT BUDDHA BAKER. SEEK
- 36:20AND DESTROY. [laughter]
- 36:22WELL, WHEN you make a 5-0 call early in
- 36:25the season, anybody else that blitzes,
- 36:29the quarterback has to throw the ball
- 36:31hot. You get rid of the ball, high plant
- 36:34leg, throw it incomplete or complete,
- 36:36get on with the game. We don't like TO
- 36:37DO THAT, BUT THAT'S WHAT YOU have to do.
- 36:39But what does Justin Herbert do in the
- 36:41fourth quarter? He gets hit hard by TWO
- 36:45ARIZONA CARDINALS LIKE HE HAD NO IDEA
- 36:48HOW HE WAS BEING PROTECTED IN A FIVEMAN
- 36:50PROTECTION. AND IT REALLY PISSES ME OFF
- 36:54because you think Andrew Luck got sacked
- 36:57a lot in Indianapolis in his first 93
- 37:00games? Yes. Herbert's been sacked 50
- 37:03more times than Andrew Luck. You cannot
- 37:05win and you cannot ever function at a
- 37:08high level if you don't understand pass
- 37:10protection. Sorry for yelling, but
- 37:13>> I'm fired up. I want to run through a
- 37:14wall right now.
- 37:15>> That was not good last week. And I think
- 37:17the Raiders who got a great win at home
- 37:20with Clint Kubak with Kurt Cousins, a
- 37:23veteran quarterback. We get Brock Bowers
- 37:25back hopefully. Ashton Genty over 100
- 37:28yards. I like the Raiders to go to LA
- 37:31and do something they haven't done
- 37:32lately. Boom. Go two and 0. Two and0.
- 37:35Raider Nation.
- 37:36>> Are you Are you going with him?
- 37:37>> I'm ready to be I want to call BUDDHA
- 37:39BAKER. SAY, "WHAT'S UP, BUDDHA?" YOU MY
- 37:40MAN.
- 37:41>> I LOVE BUDDHA BAKER, MAN. Seek and
- 37:43destroy. [laughter]
- 37:45>> You like Metallica?
- 37:46>> Of course you do.
- 37:47>> I know. So, who you taking, Jay?
- 37:50>> Yeah.
- 37:50>> Taking the Chargers.
- 37:52>> I think the Chargers played pretty good
- 37:53early in the game. They just kind of
- 37:54fell asleep and had some miscues, a bad
- 37:57interception here there. I a fumble.
- 37:59Just
- 38:00>> just didn't click for him in week one. I
- 38:01think it'll click for him week two.
- 38:02Harball's a good coach. He'll get him
- 38:04going.
- 38:04>> All right. I I have to say I don't even
- 38:06want to go to straight up football quite
- 38:07yet, coach, because I feel like you just
- 38:08want to keep yelling about this team.
- 38:10>> Well, I didn't feel the Charger defense
- 38:12either. I was disappointed. I know they
- 38:14got a new defensive coordinator. Jesse
- 38:16Men's in Baltimore. Chris Ori got to
- 38:19play better on defense. I mean, Arizona
- 38:22made Joe Jacobe Brousette look good. Or
- 38:25did Joe Jacobe Brassette make them look
- 38:27pretty normal? I thought Arizona did a
- 38:30great job with two different runners
- 38:32involving a lot of different receivers.
- 38:35They're vulnerable, Raider Nation. Let's
- 38:37go, Raiders.
- 38:38>> That's a week two speech is what that I
- 38:40mean that that just gets you fired up.
- 38:42Let's go to straight up football. We're
- 38:43going to start with the Panthers at the
- 38:45Falcons. [music] Jay, I'm going to start
- 38:46with you to give John a little bit of a
- 38:47breather after that incredible pumpup
- 38:49speech. So, the Panthers lose to the
- 38:50Bears last week. The Falcons lose to
- 38:52[music] the Steelers. We know that Bryce
- 38:54Young always plays well versus Atlanta.
- 38:56What do you expect in this matchup? a
- 38:58lot of Bejon. I mean, Bejian had about
- 39:0080% of the Falcons offense last week and
- 39:03he's watching the film of the Panthers
- 39:05defense and he's probably stretching
- 39:07right now getting ready for this game. I
- 39:09expect Bejon to maybe get an NFL record
- 39:12over 200 yards, something like that.
- 39:13It's going to be a blood bat. That's the
- 39:15only chance the Falcons have to win
- 39:16because they can't really do anything
- 39:17through the air right now. Uh, but the
- 39:19Panthers really, if you look at their
- 39:20offense, they played pretty damn good,
- 39:22right? Coker had a big day. I mean, they
- 39:24played pretty good. Just not good. You
- 39:26score 37 points, have 468 yards of
- 39:29offense, you're 44% on third down.
- 39:31You're like, "We won by 30." No, they
- 39:33lost by 30, which is insanity.
- 39:35>> Their defense was so atrocious. And they
- 39:36had the yards they had on offense was a
- 39:38franchise record. How many times do you
- 39:40lose a game by 30 when you set a
- 39:41franchise record for the amount of yards
- 39:43you have,
- 39:43>> 44% on third down. It's unbelievable.
- 39:45So, there is some positive news coming
- 39:47out of Panther Land, but you mentioned
- 39:48it. Defensively, they were atrocious.
- 39:50They got beat up. But, is the Falcons
- 39:52offensive line like the Chicago Bears? I
- 39:54don't think so. So, I think the Panthers
- 39:55bounce back and get a big win.
- 39:57>> John, what do you think?
- 39:58>> I might go to this game and I want to
- 40:00get the crowd chanting, "We want Jack
- 40:04Strand. We want Jack Strand." Jack
- 40:06Strand played great quarterback in the
- 40:08preseason. I don't know what they're
- 40:10doing. I don't know what Pennix's health
- 40:11is. I don't know if Tua is healthy. I
- 40:13don't know if Tua is ever healthy. But I
- 40:14do think until Atlanta figures out their
- 40:17quarterback situation, they're going to
- 40:18really struggle. I hate to say it, but I
- 40:21like Carolina to win this game. But
- 40:24their defense, I hope they get the
- 40:25message. You know, they they they went
- 40:27out and gave Jaylen Phillips $120
- 40:29million. You know, they gave Derek Brown
- 40:3296 million. Uh these guys are getting
- 40:34paid. Devin Lloyd came in from the
- 40:36Jacksonville Jaguars with a big payday
- 40:38and they got abused. They really put
- 40:40some bad stuff on tape. They looked out
- 40:42of shape. They didn't run to the ball.
- 40:44They didn't fit their gaps and they
- 40:46didn't tackle. And you're right, Bejian
- 40:49might have a career day, but they got to
- 40:51find some other playmakers and somebody
- 40:53that can somebody that can throw the
- 40:54ball in Atlanta. I'm going
- 40:55>> where's Zachariah Branch? Man, I thought
- 40:56he had a great preseason. Nothing, no
- 40:58input, nothing. Drake London, not a
- 41:00whole lot. So, they got to have somebody
- 41:02step up to help Bejian a little bit.
- 41:04>> And and when you mentioned the
- 41:05quarterback situation, Kevin Sfansky, as
- 41:07of right now in recording this, hasn't
- 41:08publicly named a starter. That's usually
- 41:10a problem when you've got multiple guys
- 41:11on the roster, but they all seem to be
- 41:12hurt in some different type of way.
- 41:14>> Yeah. And it's maddening for a coach.
- 41:15And Matt Ryan's running this place. the
- 41:17greatest quarterback arguably in Falcon
- 41:19history. So, they got to really be, you
- 41:22know, stressed out. What direction are
- 41:24we going? We really botched the Kirk
- 41:26Cousins situation. You know, they get
- 41:29Cousins and they draft Mike Pennix. They
- 41:31really screwed this place up with that
- 41:33selection, I think, unless Pennix comes
- 41:35through for him in a big way.
- 41:36>> What did they think was going to happen?
- 41:37They pick up Tua. He's had 10
- 41:39concussions and they have the other
- 41:40quarterback had three blown out knees. I
- 41:42mean, did you think you're going to have
- 41:43a healthy quarterback by week one? You
- 41:44better have an alternative plan. and and
- 41:47Cooper Rush was playing through back
- 41:49spasms. Like, it's a mess in that
- 41:51quarterback room right now. So,
- 41:52>> we want Jack Strand. [laughter] We want
- 41:54Jack. I want to see.
- 41:56>> The cadence isn't great on that, but you
- 41:57could work on it. You could get him
- 41:58going, right? Yeah.
- 41:59>> Let's go to the Eagles at the Titans.
- 42:01We've talked about the Eagles. They beat
- 42:02the Commanders. The Titans lose to the
- 42:04New York Jets. Now, the Eagles statline,
- 42:06coach, it's a little deceiving. They had
- 42:08318 total yards, but 800 or 180 of those
- 42:11yards came from four explosive plays.
- 42:13Now, obviously, they get that win, but
- 42:15was there any concern with what
- 42:17Philadelphia was doing?
- 42:18>> I think so. You know, they had 10 first
- 42:19downs.
- 42:20>> Um, and really the 64 yard pass to Wix.
- 42:24I've already said Sain still just
- 42:25misplayed the ball. A couple of these
- 42:27scrambles at Herzad. I don't know what
- 42:30they're doing. On the touchdown to
- 42:31Goddard, Sunny Styles gets caught up in
- 42:33a blitz. Look, they don't even cover the
- 42:35guy. Uh, but they had 10 first downs.
- 42:37They get four or five big plays and
- 42:39that's it. But Vic Fangio and the Eagle
- 42:42defense, even though I'm not shot in the
- 42:44ass with their pass rush right now, they
- 42:46can play. They can hold this team,
- 42:48Tennessee in check. Tennessee's longest
- 42:51game was 14 yards. I mean, they have a
- 42:53hard time moving the ball in pregame
- 42:54warm-up against her. And uh I just think
- 42:57that everybody that goes to Tennessee
- 43:00that leaves plays better for another
- 43:02team than they do in Tennessee. And u
- 43:04I'm taking the Eagles to win, cover, and
- 43:08become 2 and 0. All right, Jay,
- 43:10>> way to go out on a limb there. Um,
- 43:12Tennessee is not good. We know that
- 43:14they're they're not good. Uh, the
- 43:15Philadelphia didn't impress me one bit.
- 43:17Not even on defense. John mentioned it
- 43:18about the pass rush. Where's their
- 43:20Jaylen Carter is a big guy, but they can
- 43:21double him, right? The outside guys,
- 43:23they got to get some pressure somehow
- 43:25someway. I think even Cam Ward might be
- 43:27able to complete a pass beyond five
- 43:28yards against the Eagle defense
- 43:29possibly. They do have a good secondary.
- 43:31Very good. I think it's going to be a
- 43:33close game. I think if I were playing
- 43:34this game, I'd play way lowscoring game.
- 43:38It might be a 12 to9 game. Maybe the
- 43:40kicker for the Titans runs out there at
- 43:41the fourth quarter and knocks down a 52
- 43:44yardd field goal for the victory, but
- 43:45I'm going to take the Titans. You know
- 43:47what bothers me is we got two great
- 43:48receivers, young receivers. Both teams
- 43:50took a first round pick. Carnell T of
- 43:53the Titans and Mai Lemon of the Eagles.
- 43:56Well, Mai Lemon catches three passes and
- 43:58he loses nine yards. I mean, all he gets
- 43:59are these damn bubble screens. Um, I
- 44:02want to see these receivers, Tate and
- 44:04Mai Lemon, run some routes down the
- 44:07field, and I want to see these
- 44:09quarterbacks throw the ball down there
- 44:11to these guys. I just not happy with the
- 44:13Mai Lemon route tree in week one.
- 44:15>> He's young. He's got some time, right?
- 44:17>> Yeah, he he he can run routes, trust me.
- 44:19>> Yes, he can. Uh, let's go to the
- 44:21Steelers at the Patriots. Jay, it feels
- 44:23like forever since we saw the Patriots
- 44:24play, but when they did, Drake May did
- 44:26not play well. He had three
- 44:27interceptions in that Super Bowl uh
- 44:29rematch to open the season. And when you
- 44:31look at what TJ Watt is going to be able
- 44:33to do against him, that is a nightmare
- 44:34matchup for the Patriots. What do you
- 44:36expect to see in Foxboro? A
- 44:37>> lot of defense. Again, I think there's
- 44:39going to be a defensive battle. Highmith
- 44:40had two sacks. Watt had two sacks, an
- 44:42interception for touchdown. Cam Hayward
- 44:44had three or four batted balls. The
- 44:45Steeler defense, they're getting a
- 44:47little bit older, but they can still
- 44:48play. They hunt quarterbacks. That's
- 44:50what they do. Obviously, Drake May
- 44:52struggled. He had some horrible
- 44:53decisions in the red zone, which are
- 44:55very unlike him. He's very protective of
- 44:57the ball. typically throws a pretty good
- 44:59deep ball but was miserable against
- 45:00Seattle. Seattle to cost him a victory.
- 45:02So, I expect very good defense and I
- 45:04think Drake May needs to come and find
- 45:06somebody that can make a big play. AJ
- 45:08Brown's out for four or five weeks. So,
- 45:09I'm worried about them manufacturing big
- 45:11plays. Stevenson through the ground, but
- 45:13Pittsburgh notoriously has been really
- 45:14good against the run. So, they're going
- 45:15to have to throw the ball through the
- 45:17air and find somebody and I don't know
- 45:19who that's going to be. I love
- 45:20Pittsburgh in this game.
- 45:21>> Yeah, that was a devastating opening
- 45:22week for the Patriots and the fans,
- 45:23coach, because like you mentioned, AJ
- 45:25Brown is out. Drake May did not look
- 45:26good. And then you look at what the
- 45:28Steelers bring back. They bring back
- 45:29Aaron Rogers. He has 220 yards and he's
- 45:3241 years old and he still looked pretty
- 45:34good.
- 45:34>> He did. You know, Metaf had a couple
- 45:37drop passes, drop big balls and then he
- 45:40has a couple pushoffs, OPIs that hurt
- 45:42the Steelers. They didn't get the
- 45:44running game going. Atlanta's a tough
- 45:45opener because Jeff does a lot on
- 45:48defense. But I like the Steelers in this
- 45:50game because I think they have what I
- 45:53call a fourth quarter pass rush. I got
- 45:55you another team.
- 45:56>> We used to talk about the green team,
- 45:58the money pass rushers.
- 46:00>> You got to have a defense that can close
- 46:02out the offense at the end of the game.
- 46:04The Seahawks have a green team. I mean,
- 46:07they went out and closed Drake May out.
- 46:09They sacked them three times, picked
- 46:10them off three times in the fourth
- 46:12quarter. The Pittsburgh Steelers are
- 46:14finally moving TJ Watt around. Patrick
- 46:18Graham. Yeah, Patrick Graham is moving
- 46:20him right to left and so is Highmith. I
- 46:23love that. And Cam Hayward is still a
- 46:26pain in the ass. He had three batted
- 46:27balls. They beat New England last year
- 46:30in New England. They forced about five
- 46:32fumbles. They recovered about four of
- 46:34them.
- 46:35>> I think Aaron Rogers, I think he's going
- 46:36to get this offense going. He and Mike
- 46:38McCarthy. I think the Steelers are going
- 46:40like this.
- 46:41>> And I think the Patriots are going like
- 46:43this. I still don't trust the Patriot
- 46:45offensive line. No AJ Brown, Romeo Dos,
- 46:50who scares the Steeler defense. I do
- 46:53want to see Joey Porter come back and
- 46:55play corner and he's he's demanding a
- 46:57trade. He's not there in camp. Come on
- 46:59back and help us out. We got a chance to
- 47:01do something good in Pittsburgh.
- 47:02>> Let's go to the Packers at the New York
- 47:05Jets. John Gruden. The New York Jets get
- 47:08a win in week one over the Titans. And
- 47:10the Packers lose to the Vikings. We've
- 47:11talked about that. And Green Bay's week
- 47:12one loss was bizarre because the offense
- 47:14actually they moved the ball, but it was
- 47:16those 12 penalties, the turnovers, but
- 47:18they had something going. They just
- 47:20couldn't finish those drives.
- 47:21>> Yeah. Yeah, the Green Bay Packers have
- 47:23lost six straight games. I mean, if you
- 47:25go back last year, they lost to the
- 47:26Bears back-to-back games. They lost the
- 47:29opening game. They had a 12-point lead.
- 47:31They blew that game. I mean, there's a
- 47:33fourth and one in the fourth quarter.
- 47:36>> Oh, no.
- 47:36>> And coach Maflur chooses to go for it.
- 47:40They got a backup right guard, Monk,
- 47:42number 62. The ball's in here and it's a
- 47:45quarterback sneak. You
- 47:46>> call wedge. You call everybody steps TO
- 47:49THEIR INSIDE GAP. WHICH GAP EVERYBODY?
- 47:51>> INSIDE.
- 47:52>> INSIDE GAP.
- 47:53>> WELL, which gap does MONK STEP TO? THE
- 47:56OUTSIDE GAP. AND THEY GET STUFFED ON
- 47:58FOURTH AND ONE. MATT Laflur has to be
- 48:00like, "You got to be [ __ ] me." And
- 48:02then one of the sacks, they got a backup
- 48:04tight end there, Fitzpatrick. He doesn't
- 48:06BLOCK THE RIGHT GUY AND DALLAS Turner
- 48:09almost kills Jordan Love. And then Chris
- 48:11Brooks, a backup running back. He blows
- 48:13a protection. And that's the point. They
- 48:16had lapses in their play. Kyle Vaness
- 48:19jumps offside on a hard count. They get
- 48:21a bomb to Justin Jefferson. Green Bay
- 48:24gave this game away and Green Bay's lost
- 48:26six in a row and they deserve to lose.
- 48:28I'm going to go with the JS Jets. Jets.
- 48:31Jets. Aaron Glenn has put together a
- 48:34team that really plays in his image. If
- 48:37you ever saw Deario Davis, if you're
- 48:40ever around that guy, you're getting
- 48:41better. This guy's an alpha dog and
- 48:43people are joining him. They have a
- 48:45great running back in Bree Hall. Frank
- 48:47Reich is running the offense and Gino
- 48:50Smith, he's like, "Thank God I got Frank
- 48:53Reich. I can relate to this guy. This is
- 48:55a team that's very dangerous at home.
- 48:58They could give Green Bay fits and I
- 49:00know they will. They're going to win
- 49:01this game."
- 49:02>> The Jets have found an identity. And I
- 49:03know it's only week one, but like you
- 49:05mentioned, 39 rushing attempts, 39
- 49:07minutes of possession, zero turnovers.
- 49:08They didn't do anything to lose that
- 49:10game. And that for New York Jets fans,
- 49:12you have to be like, "Hell yeah, we're
- 49:13not making mistakes."
- 49:14>> Who' they play?
- 49:16>> They play the Titans. [laughter]
- 49:18>> Everybody settle down. The Packers are
- 49:21going to beat the living dog crap out of
- 49:22these guys. I'm telling you, Jordan Love
- 49:25had some outstanding reps, man. I'm
- 49:26telling you what, he had some throws
- 49:28that were sick, right? He did. I mean,
- 49:30he got sacked. He fumbled one time
- 49:31against a pretty good blitz. He's not
- 49:33going to see all that. And if he does,
- 49:34they'll be better prepared week two than
- 49:36they were week one. I promise you Matt
- 49:38Laflur is going to take this to heart
- 49:39and really talk about a pass protection
- 49:41plan this week. However, I think the
- 49:43Packers with the receiving core that
- 49:45they have. Tucker Craft is one of the
- 49:47best tight ends in football. The running
- 49:48game is so so without Josh Jacobs. But
- 49:52this is going to be a blood bath.
- 49:53Packers are going to beat the hell out
- 49:54of him.
- 49:54>> It's kind of fun to say the Jets might
- 49:55win a football game though and actually
- 49:56mean it, right?
- 49:57>> Jets.
- 49:58>> Tom loves that. Producer loves Packers
- 50:00are going to have sevengame losing
- 50:01streak and you're going to be in here
- 50:03next week going on it.
- 50:04>> I do have to say Packers fans were very
- 50:07angry online about the officiating. Do
- 50:09you think that you can give some credit
- 50:11to them for that or no?
- 50:12>> Well, to a degree there were some
- 50:14questionable calls, but look, they
- 50:17jumped off sides three times on defense.
- 50:19There's no doubt about that. And Xavier
- 50:21McKenna is a great safety. He did tackle
- 50:23the guy on third and goal at the six-yd
- 50:25line. You get what you deserve. If you
- 50:27can't block a quarterback sneak and stay
- 50:29on sides, you should lose.
- 50:31>> Quarterback sneak. What?
- 50:32>> It's a wedge block.
- 50:33>> It's a wedge block.
- 50:35>> Stepped out. He just belly flopped.
- 50:37>> You go inside, not outside. All right,
- 50:39coach. I'm excited to get your thoughts
- 50:40on this one. I know we've talked about
- 50:41the Bucks, but we've got the Browns at
- 50:43the Bucks. The Baker Mayfield revenge
- 50:45game. You look at what the Browns are
- 50:47doing. I I actually don't know what the
- 50:48hell they're doing. We've talked about
- 50:50how Todd Monkin already has confirmed
- 50:51that Deshawn Watson is still the
- 50:53starter. He got sacked five times last
- 50:55week against the Jags. But can your
- 50:57Bucks get back? Is it time to get right?
- 51:00>> Yeah, I think so. I mean, we gave that
- 51:02game away. We gave you that necklace. I
- 51:05mean, let me tell you, Bucky Irving
- 51:07catches a pass. He's got the ball in his
- 51:09left arm and he cuts it back in here to
- 51:11the left, right into the pursuit.
- 51:13Fumble. No duh. And then Baker
- 51:15Mayfield's running in for a touchdown.
- 51:16He switches the ball. Fumble. No [ __ ] I
- 51:19mean, they did some really
- 51:20uncharacteristic things on offense with
- 51:23the football, but this offensive line in
- 51:25Tampa, trust me, Tristan Worfs at left
- 51:28tackle, this whole line played zero
- 51:30snaps together last year. They're back
- 51:33intact. They're going to get better and
- 51:34better and better. The ball security
- 51:36will be addressed. Ruben Bane, uh, this
- 51:39defense, this young crowd of defenders
- 51:41is going to get better and better. This
- 51:43is what we need. We need Cleveland to
- 51:45get off the bus, make sure they're on
- 51:47the plane on time and in Raymond James
- 51:49Stadium because Tampa is going to win
- 51:50this game.
- 51:50>> What do you think?
- 51:51>> I agree with John on this one. I have to
- 51:53because I saw the Jaguars could have
- 51:55beat Cleveland 73 to nothing. They
- 51:57called off the dogs with about 15
- 51:58minutes of the fourth whole fourth
- 52:00quarter. Cleveland really has nothing,
- 52:01no redeeming quality. They can't run the
- 52:03ball very well. Obviously, Deshun Watson
- 52:05is struggling with the passing game and
- 52:06defensively they didn't do stop. They
- 52:08could stop a cold. So, I don't know how
- 52:09they're going to stop uh Tampa Bay
- 52:11offense. Tampa Bay offense stopped
- 52:13themselves. Like you mentioned,
- 52:14Cincinnati had a little bit to do with
- 52:15that with their physical play, but I
- 52:18don't see Tampa losing this game at home
- 52:20to Cleveland. There's no way.
- 52:21>> I mean, I know every coach thinks of
- 52:22this differently, but why is Deshawn
- 52:24Watson still the starter? He looked
- 52:25awful. You have Shador Sanders. You have
- 52:26other options. Is it because they're
- 52:28just trying to say, "Okay, we're going
- 52:29to give him one more week."
- 52:30>> Obviously, you don't see a lot in the
- 52:33backup quarterbacks. I hate to say it.
- 52:35But if you had a guy that's great, don't
- 52:36you think he'd be playing? I mean, Maka
- 52:38is a hell of a coach. And I watched the
- 52:40opening possession. Cleveland took the
- 52:42ball right down the field against
- 52:44Jacksonville. There was a zone blitz and
- 52:46he got fooled on the interception. Yeah.
- 52:48And that happens sometimes. But they
- 52:51have a young group of receivers. Boston
- 52:53Conpsion Fanning at tight end. Judkins
- 52:56is a young running back. They got a lot
- 52:58of new guys on their offensive line.
- 53:00Fano is a rookie at left tackle. What
- 53:03would happen a week from now if Deshawn
- 53:05were to go on the road and get a win?
- 53:06You know, maybe that would remedy this
- 53:08whole situation, but obviously Todd Ma
- 53:10can see something that he might not see
- 53:13in the rest of these quarterbacks.
- 53:14>> Kind of discouraging if you're a Browns
- 53:16fan, which I mean, I guess they're used
- 53:17to that. They're Browns fans, but I
- 53:18mean,
- 53:18>> weren't you disappointed or defense?
- 53:20>> Yeah, I was very disappointed. I mean, I
- 53:22don't know what number five is doing on
- 53:24one of the plays, but he froze like a
- 53:25deer and the guy's running a crossing
- 53:27route right behind him. He's still
- 53:28there. [laughter]
- 53:29>> I don't know if he's frozen still or
- 53:31number five, let's go. Drop back. Move
- 53:33your feet. Do something. Do something.
- 53:35>> Do something. I never coached that
- 53:36technique before. Just stand like a
- 53:38deer.
- 53:40>> Just a dead silence. That's what I would
- 53:42that dead silence. Yeah. I mean, he just
- 53:43didn't look like he knew where he was.
- 53:45He blinded.
- 53:46>> I wouldn't show it to you, but I'd get
- 53:47fined like $3 million. We're not allowed
- 53:49to show the video, unfortunately.
- 53:50>> Yeah. Can't do that. Dave Portoy does
- 53:52not want to pay $3 million. I don't
- 53:53either. I don't blame.
- 53:54>> So, that's why you have to keep modeling
- 53:55it. You just have to model deer in
- 53:56headlights. Do it again, coach.
- 53:58>> Quarterback sneak wedge. [laughter]
- 54:01Shovel pass. Don't beat over the top.
- 54:03[gasps]
- 54:04All right, let's go to Saints at the
- 54:06Ravens. Jay, you look at at the Saints
- 54:08game, they lose in overtime to the
- 54:09Lions, but Tyler Shock, he clawed back
- 54:11after they were down 21 to zero. He had
- 54:13410 passing yards, three touchdowns. We
- 54:15talked about this in week one. When you
- 54:17look at New Orleans and the excitement
- 54:18that they have with this kid, they're
- 54:20looking great, but then the Ravens
- 54:21looked so good offensively. What do you
- 54:23expect from this one?
- 54:24>> I think this whole thing about Derrick
- 54:27Henry, Lamar Jackson, Z Flowers, that
- 54:29three-headed monster John says, you
- 54:30always want to take one guy away. Okay,
- 54:31let's take away Lamar. Here comes Derek.
- 54:34Here comes Zay Flowers. Let's take away
- 54:35Zay Flowers. Here comes Derek. Here goes
- 54:36Lamar. Here comes tight end. I mean,
- 54:38>> well, Zay might be hurt.
- 54:40>> He may be out this week. Am I right on
- 54:42that?
- 54:42>> Yes. And it's early in the week.
- 54:44>> He got the hamstring, right? Yep.
- 54:46>> They have not announced anything as of
- 54:47Wednesday.
- 54:47>> But I am impressed with Tyler Shuck from
- 54:49Louisville. I am very impressed with
- 54:50them. What they did in the fourth
- 54:52quarter, they were getting their asses
- 54:53beat and they came back. They stuck with
- 54:54the plan. Kellmore kept a lot of faith
- 54:57going in on the offense and they made
- 54:58some big plays. Chuck outside the
- 55:00pocket, within the pocket. Uh it was
- 55:02really impressive. Went down to a
- 55:03two-point play. It was a good play call.
- 55:05Shuck just had to move his feet which
- 55:06made him late on the corner route which
- 55:07threw out of bounds. Hunt for if he
- 55:09threw that on time. I think they win the
- 55:10damn game. Uh so I was impressed with
- 55:12the Saints, but I just uh there's too
- 55:14much to like about the Ravens right now.
- 55:15And it seems like that's the case every
- 55:16year. Last year we said the same thing
- 55:18and they're 89. You know what I mean? So
- 55:20I still think that the Saints will give
- 55:22them a close game, but I think the
- 55:23Ravens will take it at home.
- 55:25>> John,
- 55:25>> you know the Saints they get down 21 to
- 55:27nothing and we said it last week. last
- 55:29year outscored 85 to 19 in the first
- 55:31quarter. They got to start faster. I'll
- 55:33say this, I was with Brett Favre his
- 55:35first three years.
- 55:37>> Shuck in the second half. I swear to
- 55:39God, I was watching Brett Favre back in
- 55:401993. I mean, he was running around
- 55:42making throws, great throws.
- 55:44>> High praise.
- 55:45>> I'm not going to say it yet, but there
- 55:47is a lot to like with Shuck, man. Um,
- 55:50what's impressive about Baltimore is
- 55:52their offensive line. I mean, they lose
- 55:55Tyler Lindenbomb to the Raiders. He's
- 55:58gone. $90 million center. They got a guy
- 56:00named Gwyn, 27 years old. He comes over
- 56:03from Atlanta. John Simpson, my old
- 56:05guard, is playing left guard. And they
- 56:07got a rookie playing right guard from
- 56:08Penn State. This offensive line of the
- 56:11Ravens is better than it was in the last
- 56:13couple years. They're coming off the
- 56:15ball thumping people. And I'm really
- 56:17impressed with the offensive line coach
- 56:20Dwayne Leadford who came over to
- 56:22Baltimore. But there's just too much to
- 56:24like with the Ravens. I think coach Mter
- 56:26is going to get this defense to play
- 56:28better and better and better and they'll
- 56:31give Chuck some looks he hasn't seen
- 56:32before. Mattabke might come back to
- 56:35really good defensive tackle for the
- 56:37Ravens and I thought Trey Hendrickson
- 56:39got off to a great start. Eight or nine
- 56:41pressures. He looked good. He looked
- 56:42like him old his old self. I like
- 56:44Baltimore.
- 56:45>> Let's go Jags at the Broncos. Now we've
- 56:47talked about both of these teams. A tale
- 56:48of two different week ones. The Jags get
- 56:50killed. I mean the Jags kill the Browns,
- 56:52but the Broncos, coach, they got killed.
- 56:54Bon Knicks looked awful. The Denver's
- 56:56offense was just gross in general, but
- 56:58do you think they can more meet in the
- 57:00middle this week? Is it is it not a
- 57:01blowout on either side for these teams?
- 57:03>> This is this is the money game for me to
- 57:05watch. I can't wait to see how Denver
- 57:07responds to all this adversity. I mean,
- 57:10they got cleaned last week. 28 missed
- 57:12tackles. They couldn't move the ball.
- 57:14Davis Webb, the new play caller of the
- 57:16Broncos. He's got to have a little
- 57:18anxiety right now because Shawn Peyton's
- 57:20probably looking over his shoulder. You
- 57:22know, they only had 175 yards of
- 57:24offense, but I'm really impressed with
- 57:26the Jaguars. They had nine different
- 57:27receivers. Trevor Lawrence looked like
- 57:29Joe Montana last week. Parker
- 57:31Washington, who is this guy? I mean,
- 57:33this guy's making plays, one-handed
- 57:34catches. Uh Tootton looks like he's
- 57:37going to be a good back. This left
- 57:39tackle, Anton Harrison, he's a shutout
- 57:42artist. And
- 57:43>> [clears throat]
- 57:43>> uh Jaguars have a fourth quarter pass
- 57:46rush with Walker and and and Josh Hines
- 57:49Allen. So, I'm going with the Jaguars.
- 57:51They did it last year 34-20. I'm staying
- 57:54with the Jags.
- 57:54>> Jay,
- 57:55>> I love the Jags, man. They're one of my
- 57:57favorite teams to watch. Offensively,
- 57:58they're very good. This is a game about
- 58:00mentality early. You know, one team's
- 58:02coming off a win and everybody's saying
- 58:03the Jags are the best team. They're
- 58:04going to the Super Bowl. And the other
- 58:06team was a very total disappointment,
- 58:08zero gunk show. And and that is that's
- 58:13the mentality that Shawn Payeyton has to
- 58:15he has to instill in his team to get
- 58:17back on track. I'm sure he's killing
- 58:18these guys at practice in meeting rooms
- 58:20showing film. I mean, he's all over
- 58:21these guys. And these players for the
- 58:23Broncos will be ready to play. It'll be
- 58:24a physical football game. I'm going to
- 58:26take Denver in a comeback game because I
- 58:29think Shawn Peyton will get them ready
- 58:30to go and I think Liam Cohen, they're
- 58:31probably just a little loosey goosey
- 58:33right now, but I do love the Jaguars. I
- 58:34think they're going to win AFC South for
- 58:36sure.
- 58:37>> You just wanted me to do the gong
- 58:38because you were giving me a hard time
- 58:39because I struggle with it every time.
- 58:41>> Yeah. Yeah. Gong show. That was a gong
- 58:42show by the Broncos.
- 58:43>> It was bad. I But Shawn Payeyton did
- 58:45call it a slap in the face last week.
- 58:46So, you're thinking that just a bad week
- 58:48for them. Keep it moving.
- 58:49>> I think so.
- 58:50>> I love that. All right, let's go.
- 58:51Seahawks at the Cardinals. Uh, we talked
- 58:53about Jacobe Brassette earlier in the
- 58:55show. He looked good. He looked better
- 58:56than Justin Herbert in that game.
- 58:58Jeremiah Love scores in the debut for
- 59:00the Cardinals. What do you expect from
- 59:01this game, Jay?
- 59:02>> I expect the Seahawks to continue
- 59:04rolling. They're a physical team. They
- 59:06can beat you on defense. They can beat
- 59:07you on offense. They're they're just
- 59:09they're just so good at everything. They
- 59:10don't have a weakness. Special teams are
- 59:12unbelievable. I don't see the Seahawks
- 59:14letting down at all going to Arizona
- 59:16because I think it's good that Arizona
- 59:17beat the Chargers. You know, if Arizona
- 59:19would get blown out by the Chargers,
- 59:20these guys will probably be yawning
- 59:21watching film, but they're awake.
- 59:23They're watching Jeremiah Love. They're
- 59:24watching Jacobe Brousette play a damn
- 59:26good football game. They're watching the
- 59:27blitzes how they got to Justin Herbert.
- 59:29They're going to pay attention. They're
- 59:30going to be prepared. I think I just
- 59:32think personnel wise, they're better
- 59:34overall than the Arizona Cardinals.
- 59:35>> John,
- 59:36>> yeah, I think Seattle wins this game.
- 59:37Remember, Drew Lock is playing
- 59:38quarterback
- 59:40>> and I'm not being critical of Lock. He
- 59:42is not Sam Darnold. So, the playbook,
- 59:44they got a new offensive coordinator,
- 59:46Bryant Flurry. I thought they were late
- 59:48coming out of the huddle. I thought
- 59:49there was some areas that weren't very
- 59:52sharp offensively. And I know it's a
- 59:54backup quarterback, but Nick Rollis has
- 59:57done a great job coordinating this
- 59:59Arizona defense. He has some unscouted
- 1:00:01looks and Jacobe Brassette, he reminded
- 1:00:04me a lot of Rich Ganon. He's a veteran
- 1:00:07quarterback, great competitor. Sometimes
- 1:00:10the right situation with the right staff
- 1:00:12and the right guys can bring out the
- 1:00:14best in you. He reminded me of Ganon a
- 1:00:17little bit of Jeff Garcia. Best of his
- 1:00:19career comes at the end of his career.
- 1:00:21The guy had leadership. He made some
- 1:00:23really good plays in the pocket. Nick
- 1:00:25Manuri though is coming back for
- 1:00:26Seattle. He's going to make a few plays.
- 1:00:29It's going to be an ugly game. Last year
- 1:00:31uh it was a 23-20 game in Arizona. It
- 1:00:34was a fist fight. It's going to be that
- 1:00:35way again. But like you said, Seattle's
- 1:00:37just a little bit better right now.
- 1:00:38>> Right. To finish out the straightup
- 1:00:40football games, we're going to go with
- 1:00:41the Dolphins at the 49ers. Now, the
- 1:00:43Dolphins allowed five sacks, 17
- 1:00:45pressures against the Raiders. And we've
- 1:00:46talked about that hangover from
- 1:00:48Australia with the 49ers. What do you
- 1:00:49expect to see with this game?
- 1:00:51>> Remember Mr. T in the Rocky film?
- 1:00:53>> Yeah.
- 1:00:54>> What's your prediction?
- 1:00:55>> Pain. I [laughter] see a lot of pain. I
- 1:00:57just don't see uh Miami with this 49er
- 1:01:01team. It's great to see Bosa, KD, Fred
- 1:01:04Warner back. And Dre Greenlaw just looks
- 1:01:07better in a 49er outfit. C Debo's back.
- 1:01:10Kaylin Black looked great as a
- 1:01:13complimentary back to Christian
- 1:01:14McCaffrey. Mike Evans, my man. Did you
- 1:01:17see him go up and moss that guy? Uh
- 1:01:20>> 49ers, by the way. That's that's an
- 1:01:22Aggie right there.
- 1:01:22>> 49ers are going to be impressive in this
- 1:01:25one.
- 1:01:25>> Yeah, I think they can beat you a couple
- 1:01:27different ways. Obviously, they got
- 1:01:28McAffrey and Black. They can pound you
- 1:01:29down. They can just rip it then the
- 1:01:31bootlegs off of it. And Pretty people
- 1:01:33don't give him enough credit for his
- 1:01:34legs. got a big scramble against the
- 1:01:36Rams about a 20-yard scramble. Uh he can
- 1:01:38scramble, keep plays alive and they they
- 1:01:40got a plaster drill to Debo Samuel for a
- 1:01:42touchdown. So him outside the pocket is
- 1:01:44dangerous. Just another weapon for the
- 1:01:46San Francisco 49ers and Kyle will be
- 1:01:48ready for the Miami Dolphins coming to
- 1:01:49town. That's for sure. I feel bad for
- 1:01:51the Willis and the Dolphins that they
- 1:01:53don't really they have a chance. It's
- 1:01:54the NFL. Anything can happen, but the
- 1:01:5549ers are just way better.
- 1:01:57>> It's it's sad when you bring up the
- 1:01:58Dolphins and everybody just kind of like
- 1:01:59giggles to yourself like, "Oh, poor
- 1:02:00Miami. Just poor Miami." Speaking of the
- 1:02:0349ers, it is time for the Gruden family
- 1:02:06vault presented by Reese. I'm so excited
- 1:02:07about this. Presented by Reese's.
- 1:02:09There's something for everyone. Reese's
- 1:02:10is the best, by the way. Chocolate,
- 1:02:12peanut butter. It [clears throat] is
- 1:02:13just absolutely amazing. When we're on
- 1:02:15the road for college football, Brandon
- 1:02:16Walker shoving his face with Reese's. I
- 1:02:18know. He always says that Reese is the
- 1:02:20official candy partner of Baral Sports.
- 1:02:22Go get a Reese's wherever you shop.
- 1:02:27>> All right, coach. What do you got for us
- 1:02:29with the And I said the 49ers.
- 1:02:30>> 49ers. I started thinking Joe Montana.
- 1:02:33You know, Jay and I go way back with Joe
- 1:02:35Montana. Joe played at Notre Dame. My
- 1:02:37dad was the running back coach at Notre
- 1:02:39Dame. And John McVey is the general
- 1:02:42manager of the San Francisco 49ers. My
- 1:02:45dad and John McVey worked together at
- 1:02:47Dayton. They were best friends. So John
- 1:02:50McVey calls my dad. He says, "Tell me
- 1:02:52about this Joe Montana." And my dad
- 1:02:55says, "Well, if you want completions,
- 1:02:57take Montana. If you want a Jugs
- 1:02:59machine, take the guy you're thinking
- 1:03:01about taking. 49ers took Joe Montana.
- 1:03:05But why did they take Joe Montana? Well,
- 1:03:07what happened at Notre Dame is
- 1:03:10legendary. The comebacks, the poise, the
- 1:03:13clutch playmaking, unbelievable. But the
- 1:03:161979 Cotton Bowl, remember this?
- 1:03:19>> I do remember that.
- 1:03:20>> In Dallas, Texas, we're playing Houston.
- 1:03:22It's the worst weather. You're from
- 1:03:24Texas? I am. It is 20 below windchill,
- 1:03:2725, 30 mph winds. It is freaking cold
- 1:03:31and windy. And Joe Montana is our
- 1:03:33quarterback and we get Joe sick. He has
- 1:03:36like hypothermia or something. His body
- 1:03:38temperature was way down. We're behind
- 1:03:41and Joe is in the locker room. Matter of
- 1:03:43fact, Houston is kicking our ass. They
- 1:03:45are kicking our ass.
- 1:03:46>> He was eating chicken soup.
- 1:03:48>> He's eating chicken soup in the locker
- 1:03:49room TRYING TO GET HIS BODY TEMPERATURE
- 1:03:51UP. SO JOE Montana comes out like this
- 1:03:54in a golf cart. He's just dying. It's
- 1:03:56freezing. He throws another
- 1:03:57interception. That's his fourth
- 1:03:59interception. We're down 34-12.
- 1:04:02So I left. Me and my friend Scott
- 1:04:04Johnson, we left. We got on the bus.
- 1:04:07SEVEN MINUTES LEFT in the game, Casey.
- 1:04:08We left. Guess who didn't leave?
- 1:04:11>> You.
- 1:04:12>> But Notre Dame.
- 1:04:13>> Notre Dame. Okay. The luck of the Irish
- 1:04:16starts with Joe Montana. So, I go to the
- 1:04:1949ers as quality control coach. I stole
- 1:04:22Joe Montana's playbook. You see that
- 1:04:24right there?
- 1:04:24>> But this is the Cottonball media guide
- 1:04:27from 1979. You see that?
- 1:04:30>> The fact that we just got out of the
- 1:04:31vault. We got the Cottonball 1979
- 1:04:33playbook. We have Joe Montana's playbook
- 1:04:35right here and a Notre Dame help.
- 1:04:37>> SO, LISTEN. IT'S 34 TO2 Houston and I'm
- 1:04:40on the bus pissed off because we lost
- 1:04:43>> and all of a sudden a frostbitten lady
- 1:04:44gets on the bus. There was nobody left
- 1:04:46at the game. Everybody was gone. She had
- 1:04:48her pen it. She gets on the bus and she
- 1:04:50goes, "This is the greatest game I've
- 1:04:52ever seen. We won."
- 1:04:53>> Why' they let her on the bus?
- 1:04:54>> What John didn't tell you during the
- 1:04:56week, he had me go steal a bunch of
- 1:04:58toilet paper from the maids, right? So,
- 1:05:00we got a bag full of toilet paper.
- 1:05:02>> We didn't get to throw any toilet paper.
- 1:05:04John is on the bus.
- 1:05:05>> They are winning the game. The lady says
- 1:05:07Notre Dame won the game. SO, WE GO
- 1:05:09SPRINTING DOWN to the locker room to see
- 1:05:11my dad. He always lets us come in the
- 1:05:12locker room. And Jay's already in there
- 1:05:14with him. And my dad sees me. HE GOES,
- 1:05:16"CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? WAS THAT THE
- 1:05:18GREATEST THING JOE MONTANA EVER DID?"
- 1:05:21>> What'd you say?
- 1:05:22>> He wasn't even there. HE WAS ON THE
- 1:05:24WHOLE GAME.
- 1:05:25>> HE LITERALLY THREW you under. [laughter]
- 1:05:27>> And the the sad thing was I'm playing
- 1:05:29pinball with Steve Sitchi and Tony
- 1:05:31Belden, the backup freshman.
- 1:05:34>> And guess who started the party? Steve
- 1:05:36Sitchi blocks the punt. Tony Beldin runs
- 1:05:38it back. But Joe Montana, man, you know
- 1:05:41why the guy's the greatest ever? He got
- 1:05:44no fear. He feels no pressure. He
- 1:05:46applies the pressure. He never quits.
- 1:05:48He's a relentless badass. It's such a
- 1:05:50brother move like that. He wasn't even
- 1:05:52there. He didn't even see it.
- 1:05:53>> Look at this on the bus.
- 1:05:54>> That is crazy. This is This is long
- 1:05:56before I
- 1:05:56>> You're probably wearing a tank top for
- 1:05:58the TV.
- 1:05:58>> Oh, were you wearing a tank? You got the
- 1:06:00You got the guns out, coach.
- 1:06:01>> Shut up, Jay. [laughter]
- 1:06:03>> And again, brothers got to love it.
- 1:06:05>> Hey, Houston, WE HAVE A PROBLEM.
- 1:06:07>> ALL RIGHT, it's time for the shred line.
- 1:06:09And I have to say, week one [music] was
- 1:06:10great because you guys were giving
- 1:06:11relationship advice. The people loved
- 1:06:13that. So the I'm sure there are a lot of
- 1:06:14very angry fans calling into the shred
- 1:06:16line, but before we get to the
- 1:06:18voicemails, anything you guys want to
- 1:06:19shred, get off your chest?
- 1:06:23>> I think that, you know, I just like
- 1:06:24watching football. I just feel for some
- 1:06:26of these coaches right now that are 0
- 1:06:27and one and really had no redeeming
- 1:06:30quality to show for them. Their defense
- 1:06:31was bad, their special teams was
- 1:06:32terrible, and their offense stunk. You
- 1:06:34know, that's you're just looking for
- 1:06:36some kind of we can build on this. What
- 1:06:38does Tennessee build on? What does
- 1:06:40Cleveland build on? Um, you know what I
- 1:06:41mean? So I just
- 1:06:42>> a shred. That's like a cry or a whine.
- 1:06:45>> That is a whine. He's feeling BAD FOR
- 1:06:46ME. I REMEMBERED. I WENT THROUGH IT.
- 1:06:48JOHN, YOU MIGHT not have gone through
- 1:06:49it. I went through it. All right.
- 1:06:50>> Empathy.
- 1:06:51>> Yeah.
- 1:06:51>> Here's a shred. Some of these college
- 1:06:53teams that got these $40 million payroll
- 1:06:56rosters playing teams with no payroll. I
- 1:06:59mean, what the hell, man? Indiana's
- 1:07:01playing Howard. That's not fair to
- 1:07:03Howard. I mean, Malisak's playing
- 1:07:06Norfolk State. That ain't right, man.
- 1:07:08You guys got all these super
- 1:07:10conferences, all these JEWELRY
- 1:07:12NECKLACES. PLAY THE GOOD. I mean, it's
- 1:07:14just [ __ ] Some of these schedules
- 1:07:15that I'm watching.
- 1:07:16>> So, basically, we just You have empathy
- 1:07:18for the coaches. You feel bad. And you
- 1:07:19just are pissed at college football. I
- 1:07:21love that. It's It's a good range range
- 1:07:23of emotions here. Speaking of range of
- 1:07:25emotions, I'm assuming that Browns fans
- 1:07:27are always down tremendous.
- 1:07:28>> Let's see what this voice this caller
- 1:07:30has to say about how much he dreads
- 1:07:32football.
- 1:07:34Hey, this is uh Calvin Miller from uh
- 1:07:37Southern California and I'm a Cleveland
- 1:07:40Browns fan and I just got to say, dude,
- 1:07:42I truly dread football season. I swear
- 1:07:46it's like you It's like allowing this
- 1:07:49chick that you just waited and waited
- 1:07:51and waited to finally get out on a date
- 1:07:54and now you know the fall comes around
- 1:07:57and now you got her officially out on a
- 1:07:59date and all she wants to do is flick
- 1:08:01your nut sack 10,000 [laughter]
- 1:08:04times.
- 1:08:05>> Cut them off. I get the picture here.
- 1:08:07Here's what I recommend you do. Go out
- 1:08:09in your yard and just stand like this.
- 1:08:11just stand like this until we resolve
- 1:08:14the quarterback situation. It's just
- 1:08:16been the same song and dance for so
- 1:08:18long. It's almost been impossible that
- 1:08:21you can have no quarterback that you
- 1:08:25believe in for this long of time.
- 1:08:27>> I've had friends in Cleveland for a long
- 1:08:29time, season ticket holders, and the
- 1:08:30legendary Dog Pound got rid of their
- 1:08:32tickets. That's how bad it is. You don't
- 1:08:34get rid of Dog Pound tickets in
- 1:08:35Cleveland. They did.
- 1:08:36>> They Yeah. You know, it's a just a
- 1:08:38devastating fan base, but also just the
- 1:08:40visual that this guy just gave us. And
- 1:08:42like you said, some people pay extra for
- 1:08:43>> us. That's an extra mile.
- 1:08:44>> Hey, don't complain. Somebody else might
- 1:08:46like the girl that you take a date on to
- 1:08:48do that. Speaking of depressed fans,
- 1:08:49let's just keep it rolling. Here's
- 1:08:50another one.
- 1:08:53>> Yeah. What's up, coach? Uh, I'm from
- 1:08:55Tennessee. I'm a Titans fan. What the
- 1:08:58hell did I just watch today? I mean,
- 1:09:00that was terrible. And it's just it's
- 1:09:02going to be the third year in a row of I
- 1:09:03I thought for sure we get the four wins.
- 1:09:05No, we're we're just not. I mean, I know
- 1:09:08you're a coach and you like coaches, but
- 1:09:09some coaches are [ __ ] stupid. I mean,
- 1:09:12this Brian Dable guy, I was told built
- 1:09:15Josh Allen. I don't think he did at all.
- 1:09:17I mean, I'm watching Cam Ward look like
- 1:09:19a [ __ ] Josh Allen's putting balls on
- 1:09:22the table against the best defense in
- 1:09:24the NFL. I don't think he really needs
- 1:09:25him at all. And then Salah, what the
- 1:09:27hell does he do besides sit there and
- 1:09:29look upset? I mean, the 49ers even look
- 1:09:32pretty good without him. I don't know
- 1:09:33what the hell he coached up. Same thing
- 1:09:35with Brian Callahan. We had him a year
- 1:09:36ago. They say he coached up Joe Burrow.
- 1:09:39I I I THINK JOE BURROW HELPED OUT BRIAN
- 1:09:41CALLAHAN. These guys are all terrible.
- 1:09:44Why is my organization terrible? The
- 1:09:46Titans suck every year. We can get new
- 1:09:48logos. We can get new jerseys. We're
- 1:09:50still going to suck.
- 1:09:53>> Okay. I
- 1:09:54>> The jerseys did look good. They did look
- 1:09:56good.
- 1:09:56>> All you can hope for is some
- 1:09:58improvement. I mean, you got to hope
- 1:09:59that this new coaching staff, the new
- 1:10:02offensive coordinator, the new system,
- 1:10:05you just hope they can start seeing some
- 1:10:07progress because that opening kickoff
- 1:10:09last week went out of bounds. It all
- 1:10:12started with the opening kickoff, but I
- 1:10:15feel your pain. Cleveland and Tennessee
- 1:10:17fans, I I feel your pain. I I just I
- 1:10:19hope things get better.
- 1:10:21>> See, he showed some empathy right there.
- 1:10:22You see that?
- 1:10:23>> He Yeah, he's soft.
- 1:10:24>> Yeah.
- 1:10:24>> Keep that aside, he's a softy. He wanted
- 1:10:26to throw a little bit of shade at you,
- 1:10:28but he he had that was some softy coming
- 1:10:29out, coach.
- 1:10:30>> Yeah, there's not much to shred.
- 1:10:33>> I don't like to kick a team that's down.
- 1:10:35>> You know, they're they're a team
- 1:10:36obviously they should play each other.
- 1:10:38Cleveland and Tennessee. That way
- 1:10:39somebody will win.
- 1:10:41>> Who would you take? Who would you take?
- 1:10:42>> I don't know. I'd take a
- 1:10:43>> And the winner plays the Dolphins.
- 1:10:44>> I'd take a private jet to go watch that
- 1:10:46because I just want to see somebody.
- 1:10:47[laughter]
- 1:10:48>> The winner plays the Dolphins and winner
- 1:10:49that plays the Falcons.
- 1:10:50>> They should all play each other instead
- 1:10:51of getting like, you know, kicked out of
- 1:10:52the league. They just play they play
- 1:10:54each other. All right. This is a Lions
- 1:10:56fan who's called in. Let's hear from
- 1:10:57him.
- 1:10:59>> Hey, coach. This is Joey from New
- 1:11:01Orleans. I just want to ask you real
- 1:11:03quick, what the hell is a fumble? I
- 1:11:06mean, does this mean that Tom Brady
- 1:11:08intended to tuck the ball down? What the
- 1:11:11hell is a fumble anymore? We lose this
- 1:11:13game to the Lions because of the refs.
- 1:11:16And you said best, coach. You might as
- 1:11:18well be an [ __ ] to the refs cuz
- 1:11:19they're not going to help you if you're
- 1:11:20nice anyway.
- 1:11:21>> I LOVE THIS CALL. I LOVE THIS GUY. AND
- 1:11:23IT'S NOT A TUCK RULE. THEY SPELLED IT
- 1:11:26WRONG. It had a different consonant in
- 1:11:28front of that uck PART OF IT. HERE IT
- 1:11:30IS. This Mark Butterworth, VP of instant
- 1:11:34replay, rule three, section 21, article
- 1:11:37three, ITEM ONE, CONTACT BY TEAM B
- 1:11:40PLAYER. THAT'S [ __ ] THAT WAS A
- 1:11:42FUMBLE. IT'S ALWAYS BEEN A FUMBLE.
- 1:11:45INSTANT REPLAY IS ONLY TO CORRECT AN
- 1:11:48OBVIOUS ERROR. THAT WAS A FUMBLE. THE
- 1:11:51FREAKING BALL WENT BACKWARDS.
- 1:11:55>> That cost the SAINTS THE GAME. COST ME
- 1:11:57MY RAIDER career for crying out loud.
- 1:12:00>> IF I GIVE ME A BREAK, MAN. RULE THREE,
- 1:12:02SECTION 21, ARTICLE THREE. MAN, I WOULD
- 1:12:05VOMIT IF I was on the plane. If I was a
- 1:12:07Saints coach, that's total [ __ ] I
- 1:12:09still can't get over it.
- 1:12:12>> You're you're angrier than the Saints
- 1:12:13fan that called here. I thought it was a
- 1:12:14Lions fan.
- 1:12:15>> I can't believe it. I think Dan Campbell
- 1:12:16and the Lions staff thought it was a
- 1:12:18fumble.
- 1:12:18>> If I throw a bubble screen behind a line
- 1:12:19of scrimmage, what is that? That's a
- 1:12:21fumble. What if I said I meant to throw
- 1:12:22it forward? It would be
- 1:12:23>> okay. Don't you understand what I SAID?
- 1:12:25>> BUT I MEANT TO THROW IT FORWARD.
- 1:12:26>> RULE THREE, SECTION 21, article 3, item
- 1:12:29one. You know, that's the same crap I
- 1:12:31got on the tuck rule. I got this
- 1:12:33technical uh review of why it was what
- 1:12:36it was.
- 1:12:37>> What if I get hit open hand and the ball
- 1:12:39comes out?
- 1:12:39>> I don't know. You got Mark Butterworth
- 1:12:41at the Butterworth.
- 1:12:42>> You have to ask about intention though,
- 1:12:44right? If you intended to throw it
- 1:12:45forward,
- 1:12:46>> he needs to make more syrup. [laughter]
- 1:12:48>> Okay. Okay, so I think we're just going
- 1:12:49to keep the heat rolling because this
- 1:12:50shred line I'm very interested to hear.
- 1:12:52Go ahead and roll it, Jay.
- 1:12:52>> So this morning, we're going to take the
- 1:12:54time to go ahead and shred John and Jay
- 1:12:56Gruden for betting against the New York
- 1:12:59Football Giants on Sunday Night
- 1:13:00Football, picking the Dallas Cowboys to
- 1:13:02beat him. Let me tell you one thing
- 1:13:03about this team. Every time you play the
- 1:13:07Football Giants, they're going to line
- 1:13:09up, put their hands in the dirt, look
- 1:13:11you in the [ __ ] face, and get into a
- 1:13:14fight with you for 60 minutes of
- 1:13:16football. And that is something that has
- 1:13:19been missing from the sport and that has
- 1:13:21been missing from this team. And it
- 1:13:23feels so [ __ ] good to see an old
- 1:13:26school smashmouth football team get
- 1:13:29after it again. I don't know how many
- 1:13:31points they're going to score this year.
- 1:13:33I don't know how many [ __ ] wins
- 1:13:34they're going to have this year, but
- 1:13:36I'll tell you one thing about this team
- 1:13:38that feels different and electrifying is
- 1:13:40that they give a [ __ ] They care and
- 1:13:44>> Okay. Okay. Okay.
- 1:13:46I apologize for picking against you. You
- 1:13:49were right last week. But it ain't where
- 1:13:51you line up, it's where you wind up. And
- 1:13:53I coached against the Giants when they
- 1:13:55were the Giants. Lawrence Taylor,
- 1:13:57Carson, Jim Burke. I remember Rez and
- 1:14:01Henry, whatever the hell his name was. I
- 1:14:03remember Bill Sims, Makakei, Bart Oats.
- 1:14:07They brought it every week. They didn't
- 1:14:09just do it in the opening week. They did
- 1:14:11it every freaking week. SO IF YOU WANT
- 1:14:12TO BE ALL THAT MR. Giant caller go to
- 1:14:15the Rams and kick their ass and call me
- 1:14:18next week. That's what I want TO SEE.
- 1:14:20THAT'S WHAT I WOULD LOVE TO SEE. It's
- 1:14:22week one, buddy. Chill out. I mean,
- 1:14:24Jesus Christ, you beat the Cowboys who
- 1:14:26had one of the worst defenses in NFL
- 1:14:28history last year. So what? You ran a
- 1:14:30couple power plays for a gain of five. I
- 1:14:32mean, settle down. You're going to be in
- 1:14:34third and eight. Let's see how you
- 1:14:35protect Jackson Dart. I was impressed
- 1:14:36with the Giants, but god damn, settle
- 1:14:38down, dude.
- 1:14:39>> I don't even think he necessarily
- 1:14:41believed that. his voice when he wanted
- 1:14:42to shred the two of you. It was like he
- 1:14:44was too confident because he didn't
- 1:14:45actually believe what he was saying. He
- 1:14:46said it was missing from the sport.
- 1:14:49>> That's crazy. That is a crazy thing to
- 1:14:50say.
- 1:14:51>> He might have seen Patrick Ricard, new
- 1:14:53right guard coming off the ball, though.
- 1:14:54[laughter]
- 1:14:55Might have seen a few of those. He
- 1:14:56probably feels pretty good about it.
- 1:14:57>> Make sure you call in the shred line
- 1:14:59every single week. I love these. And
- 1:15:00gets coach fired up. Gets Jay fired up.
- 1:15:02Anything else, guys, for week two?
- 1:15:05>> No, I just I get excited. You know, you
- 1:15:07don't stay the same in this business.
- 1:15:09You either get better or worse. and
- 1:15:10everybody's up in the arms about who's
- 1:15:12great, who's bad. But let's see what
- 1:15:15happens now week two, everybody's had a
- 1:15:16chance to put the pads on, get a full
- 1:15:18game of action in, and let's see who
- 1:15:20adjusts and who makes makes the plays
- 1:15:22this week.
- 1:15:23>> All right, we'll see you guys next week.
