- 0:07>> Hey guys, welcome to another video.
- 0:08Thanks for joining today.
- 0:10I'm going to do a another which shoe for
- 0:12you comparison
- 0:14between
- 0:16what are currently my two favorite zero
- 0:19drop shoes, Topo Magnifly 6
- 0:23to the new
- 0:25Altra Torin 9.
- 0:29There definitely some similarities.
- 0:31They're both known for
- 0:34pretty much a foot shape
- 0:37toe last.
- 0:40They both have pretty wide toe boxes.
- 0:44They're both zero drop.
- 0:46The Altra
- 0:48has a 28 mm stack height.
- 0:52The Topo has a 26 mm stack height.
- 0:56>> [panting]
- 0:59>> Anyway, they are
- 1:00right now my two favorite zero drop
- 1:03shoes.
- 1:04Another really great
- 1:06zero drop shoe that I've really enjoyed
- 1:07in the past is the Altra Escalante.
- 1:12I have actually even ordered the new
- 1:13Escalante 5 cuz I want to compare it as
- 1:16well.
- 1:17The only thing about the Escalante 5
- 1:20that'll probably
- 1:22keep me from putting quite as many miles
- 1:24in it is
- 1:26at least running. I'll walk wear them
- 1:28walking a lot.
- 1:29Is the stack height is 24 mm.
- 1:32And I have found I now have
- 1:35arthritis in my back and I have found
- 1:38I'm a little happier with just a little
- 1:40bit more cushion than that.
- 1:42But I'm excited about that shoe as well
- 1:44and that
- 1:46my only other concern is that the
- 1:48outsole rubber
- 1:51seemed to wear out a little quick.
- 1:54Well, they They that added
- 1:57a lot more outsole rubber to that to the
- 1:59new version of that shoe, so I'm looking
- 2:01forward to
- 2:02testing it out.
- 2:04Anyway,
- 2:06on to the Magnify 6 and
- 2:10the Torin 9.
- 2:11Okay, so this is the Torin 9.
- 2:15Like I said, it's a now a 28 mm stack
- 2:17height. It used to be 30.
- 2:20It is using
- 2:22the Ego P35X foam, which is
- 2:25a polyolefin elastomer. It's
- 2:28definitely a bouncier foam than what
- 2:30they had in the Ego Max.
- 2:33The Ego Max foam that was in the
- 2:36Torin 8.
- 2:39It uses
- 2:41the P35X means it's the P35 foam, the
- 2:45polyolefin elastomer, but they are doing
- 2:47a
- 2:48firmer
- 2:51ring of it around the exterior of the
- 2:53shoe to keep it stable.
- 2:55And then the middle portion is the
- 2:58softer foam,
- 3:00which gives it some nice softness.
- 3:02But these are definitely a little more
- 3:03energetic feeling than the
- 3:07Torin 8.
- 3:09>> [snorts]
- 3:09>> They
- 3:11changed the upper some, though. It's
- 3:12still just a real breathable mesh like
- 3:14they had before.
- 3:16They definitely widen the space that the
- 3:18laces go through, the lace stays.
- 3:21I guess that makes it more adjustable.
- 3:22I'm not really sure.
- 3:24They adjusted
- 3:26the tongue is
- 3:28really soft still, but it's
- 3:31a little thinner, but the underside is
- 3:34all really nice knit material
- 3:37that I think would make these good for
- 3:38running barefoot.
- 3:40It's got a what I would say is a
- 3:43moderately
- 3:45cushioned heel collar,
- 3:47very comfortable.
- 3:50And then
- 3:52one of the Well,
- 3:53between the foam and then the other big
- 3:55update they did
- 3:57was they went to a
- 4:02Vibram
- 4:04XS Dura
- 4:06outsole.
- 4:07So, the outsole is definitely grippier
- 4:11and I think it's going to last a lot
- 4:12longer as well.
- 4:14I've got a little over 50 mi in these,
- 4:16but I have really enjoyed them so far.
- 4:20The other shoe is the Topo Magnifly 6.
- 4:24Now, it's a 26-mm stack height.
- 4:27So, 2 mm less than the Ultra,
- 4:30but
- 4:32I have found these cushioned enough to
- 4:34where they work with my back.
- 4:36Very comfortable. They also said they
- 4:39softened and made the mid sole a little
- 4:43more responsive and softer.
- 4:46It is
- 4:47their Zipfoam formula, which is a blend
- 4:50of EVA and TPU,
- 4:52but it does feel really nice. It's a
- 4:54really breathable upper.
- 4:57They now have
- 4:59not only the little Topo lace stays, but
- 5:01they also go through a
- 5:03uh loop through the tongue, so the
- 5:05tongue really stays in place well.
- 5:08It is also a medium cushioned tongue,
- 5:11medium cushioned probably almost heavily
- 5:14cushioned heel collar.
- 5:17Uh
- 5:18These two shoes come in really close in
- 5:21weight,
- 5:23but
- 5:24this shoe
- 5:28does not have a Vibram outsole, but it's
- 5:31got a good bit of rubber coverage.
- 5:35And
- 5:36I had really good luck with the
- 5:38Magnifly 5s in that I went over 450 mi.
- 5:41The outsole was still doing really well,
- 5:43and they said they have improved the
- 5:45outsole for further durability now. So,
- 5:48as for the ride of the two shoes,
- 5:56>> [music]

- 6:41[music]

- 6:59[music]
- 7:02>> the Topo ride is definitely a softer
- 7:04ride. I still don't think I'm going down
- 7:07into the foam so much that I'm
- 7:10not able to bounce back. It's got enough
- 7:12response to where you're still able to
- 7:14pick up the pace. So,
- 7:16I would still not call it my speed work
- 7:17shoe, but it is it is a
- 7:20nice, comfortable ride, and you're not
- 7:22losing energy.
- 7:26The Altra Torin 9
- 7:28is
- 7:30a definitely a firmer ride.
- 7:32Um but it's still definitely got some
- 7:35softness because that P-35 foam in the
- 7:37middle is fairly soft.
- 7:40I would say it's a little bit more
- 7:42energetic. It's got a little bit more
- 7:44bounce to it.
- 7:48I think the polyolefin elastomer is a
- 7:50little bouncier.
- 7:51They both have very good grip. They're
- 7:53doing good on
- 7:55wet. I would give the advantage as far
- 7:58as grip to the Altra because of that
- 8:02Vibram outsole, but the Topo is still
- 8:04very good as well.
- 8:08As far as
- 8:10fit,
- 8:12for me they both fit really well. I have
- 8:14a medium to slightly narrower than
- 8:16medium foot.
- 8:18The
- 8:19Topo always fits me real well. I like
- 8:21the little bit of arch support in the
- 8:23way they do their heel and
- 8:26midfoot really locks in well.
- 8:29The Altra, they improved the fit for me.
- 8:31They made the heel a little bit narrower
- 8:34and it really does lock in well.
- 8:38That said, the
- 8:40Altra is the Altra standard fit, so it's
- 8:43not their widest toe box. So, if you
- 8:46have a wider foot, you're probably going
- 8:48to be happier in the Magnifly 6. It's a
- 8:51little wider throughout, little wider
- 8:52through the toe box, a little wider
- 8:55through the midfoot.
- 8:56You'll be happier with it as long as the
- 8:58arch support doesn't bother you. It
- 9:00doesn't bother me. If you've got some
- 9:02arch in your foot, the Topo will not be
- 9:04a problem at all. If you're really
- 9:06flat-footed, you might prefer the Altra
- 9:08because it has almost no arch support.
- 9:15So, that's as far as fit, I think the
- 9:17Magnifly 6 is a little bit more wide
- 9:19foot friendly,
- 9:21but they both fit me really well.
- 9:25Like I said before, the ride of the
- 9:28Topo Magnifly 6 is a little softer. It's
- 9:31a little more energetic than the Altra.
- 9:34Anyway, both very good shoes.
- 9:38And those are my impressions of them.
- 9:41Very good shoes. I'm enjoying them both.
- 9:44And those are my thoughts. If you
