When You Lose Motivation (How To Be Unshakable) — Transcript

- 0:00Allah says,
- 0:04"Don't become weak and depressed."
- 0:08When a believer goes through crisis,
- 0:11instead of the crisis becoming a reason
- 0:13to lose inspiration, the crisis becomes
- 0:16the fuel to become far more motivated
- 0:19than ever before. Allah would not give
- 0:21me a crisis unless he wants me to rise
- 0:24even higher. That's the mentality Allah
- 0:26wants. Allah says, "I want to see who
- 0:29really believes in the unseen." Allah
- 0:31says, "That's why I gave you a hard time
- 0:34because I wanted to see how many of you
- 0:36can still believe in the promise of
- 0:38Allah even when you don't see it."

- 3:47To start today's I would like to
- 3:50introduce you to a word that happens
- 3:52only a few times in the Quran.
- 3:55Uh the word is wa alan.
- 4:00The ayah that I recited to you also
- 4:02includes this word. In the Arabic
- 4:04language, the word vahan is used for
- 4:06instance when a when a bird eats
- 4:10something infected and it becomes sick
- 4:12and it can't fly anymore. So it tries to
- 4:15take off and it can't take off anymore.
- 4:20So it it ate something sick sickening
- 4:22and it's no longer able to fly. So it
- 4:24became disabled. The bird became
- 4:26disabled. the became the the way the
- 4:28bird is they say
- 4:32when someone is not able to find the
- 4:34energy to do work. They're trying to do
- 4:36the work but they can't do it. They're
- 4:39they're not able to get up or they can't
- 4:40find the for example you might be having
- 4:43mental block. You're trying to type your
- 4:44report and nothing's coming to your
- 4:46head. You're experiencing it's a kind of
- 4:49temporary paralysis that happens.
- 4:53Similarly, when someone has weak grip,
- 4:55they're not able to grab something and
- 4:57hold it tight. Their hands have become
- 4:58weak. They say
- 5:04someone who is someone who doesn't have
- 5:05a good grip. Doesn't have a tight grip.
- 5:09This word is used in a very interesting
- 5:11way in the Quran. Like for example,
- 5:14tells Allah,
- 5:17"My bones have become weak. They don't
- 5:19respond anymore." It's almost like they
- 5:22I in my mind I'm getting up but my body
- 5:24says wait right so it doesn't react the
- 5:27way that I need it to react. It's almost
- 5:30slowly becoming paralyzed. So that's how
- 5:32he describes his old age that his bones
- 5:35are too weak and too rigid too slow to
- 5:39react to respond.
- 5:41This is also not just a physical state.
- 5:45This is also a mental state
- 5:48is also a mental state. And for example,
- 5:52but before I go to the mental state,
- 5:54understand something about the physical
- 5:55state also. When a when a mother is
- 5:57pregnant, when a woman is pregnant and
- 5:59every month the burden becomes heavier
- 6:02and heavier, first trimester, second
- 6:03trimester, third trimester, Allah says
- 6:10that his mother carried him one weakness
- 6:12on top of another weakness. What that
- 6:14means is she becomes less and less able
- 6:16to get up, less and less able to do the
- 6:19normal things she was able to do, less
- 6:21and less able to turn from one side to
- 6:23another side when she's lying in bed.
- 6:25Her she slows down her physically, she's
- 6:28slowing down and becoming less capable.
- 6:31From this comes the idea that we just
- 6:35like when you eat something bad and you
- 6:37become sick like the bird or a woman is
- 6:40carrying a an entire another human being
- 6:42in her body and it slowed her down. The
- 6:45same way you can experience wan when you
- 6:48become depressed.
- 6:51You can experience wan because you saw
- 6:53something that took away your
- 6:55motivation. Your inspiration is gone.
- 6:58The Sahabah
- 7:02were with the prophet sallallahu alaihi
- 7:03wasallam right next to him in the battle
- 7:06of Badr and they saw the angels
- 7:10help them. Some of them would report
- 7:12that we would we would slice our sword
- 7:14but before the sword could touch we
- 7:16could see the enemies already cut. And
- 7:18Allah talked about how he sent an army
- 7:20of angels to help the Sahabah. This
- 7:23inspired them. They were inspired.
- 7:26But when you get to the battle of
- 7:29when you get to the battle of
- 7:32the prophet himself sallallahu alaihi
- 7:34wasallam is almost killed. There's even
- 7:38rumors spreading that he's already been
- 7:39killed. And when he he was unconscious
- 7:42when he woke up his face was filled with
- 7:45blood because if you accept all of the
- 7:47reports he was injured at least in three
- 7:50different places in his face. Even an
- 7:52arrow went through his jaw, took out one
- 7:54of his one of his uh went through the
- 7:56helmet into the jaw and took out one of
- 7:58his teeth. And there's even reports that
- 8:01the Sahabah like Ali who had to take mud
- 8:04and make a mixture and patch his face so
- 8:06the bleeding would stop. Right? This
- 8:08this had to happen. And of course all of
- 8:10this happened because in the beginning
- 8:13of that same battle is the
- 8:17Allah will say himself in the beginning
- 8:20you were destroying the enemy. You were
- 8:22winning. They were running. This is what
- 8:25was the beginning of was Muslims were
- 8:28winning. Allah talks about that in the
- 8:29Quran. So we were also motivated.
- 8:32But then of course we know that a
- 8:33mistake happened and some people left
- 8:36their position and then they came from
- 8:38behind. And everybody here knows the
- 8:39story. Allah in great detail describes
- 8:44what the not just what happened, how the
- 8:47Muslims felt.
- 8:49How the Muslims felt and actually what
- 8:52they felt was wah. The feeling that they
- 8:56had at that time was wah. The reason I
- 8:58want to share this with you is that this
- 9:00story is not just about the battle of
- 9:03this is a story about how to overcome a
- 9:06devastating situation.
- 9:08Whether it's a devastating situation in
- 9:10your family, it's a devastating
- 9:12situation in the country, in the
- 9:14economy, a state of war, whatever
- 9:16devastating situation happens that in
- 9:19the in the beginning you were full of
- 9:21hope, everything was going well,
- 9:22everything was going exactly according
- 9:24to plan and all of a sudden everything
- 9:27turns around and all of your hard work
- 9:30disappears and your own leader, your own
- 9:33inspiration is injured. Imagine the next
- 9:35week sallallahu alaihi wasallam has to
- 9:38lead the prayer and he's giving the and
- 9:40everybody's looking at his face full of
- 9:43injuries
- 9:44right and they're sitting there looking
- 9:45at the and they cannot they can they
- 9:47always remember what happened they can't
- 9:49forget what happened right and his maybe
- 9:51his voice is also changed because of the
- 9:53injury the way he speaks is no longer
- 9:55the normal way that he speaks until the
- 9:57injury recovers and they can hear the
- 9:59pain in his voice and that becomes the
- 10:01voice of every everybody gets depressed
- 10:03and what ayat came in this time of
- 10:06depression
- 10:07In this type of no inspiration, what of
- 10:10the Quran came? Allah says,
- 10:14he says,
- 10:18don't become weak and depressed.
- 10:21Number one,
- 10:23as if Allah knows we are already
- 10:25depressed.
- 10:26He knows we're already feeling
- 10:28paralyzed, right? We're already feeling
- 10:30like what's the motivation for me to get
- 10:32up now? And in that moment, he says,
- 10:35him. Then he says a lot of times the
- 10:39word is described as sadness but is more
- 10:43than sadness in Arabic is when something
- 10:46becomes hard on the infi.
- 10:49So for example if there's a if there's a
- 10:52a person dies their physical body starts
- 10:55becoming stiff. This is actually on the
- 10:57inside of the body right. So this is
- 11:02the the the stiffness or the hardness
- 11:04inside something. This is describing
- 11:07extreme feelings. It could be sadness.
- 11:10It could be anxiety. It could be
- 11:11depression. It could be fear. It could
- 11:14be doubt. All of those things can
- 11:16actually be.
- 11:18So first thing Allah says is your
- 11:19inspiration went away.
- 11:22And when your inspiration goes away then
- 11:24all these negative feelings start taking
- 11:27place replacing the positive feeling
- 11:29right because if the container is empty
- 11:31somebody something will fill it so it no
- 11:33longer it it no longer has positive
- 11:36feelings so it's flooded with negative
- 11:38feelings
- 11:40and you start becoming petrified you
- 11:42start becoming hard inside
- 11:44Allah says
- 11:47don't become don't become victim to
- 11:49these two things you will be supreme you
- 11:51will win, you will be on top if in fact
- 11:53you truly truly believe in.
- 11:57Then Allah gives a motivational speech.
- 12:00He says
- 12:05if an injury has touched you and the
- 12:08word for injury normally is or in Arabic
- 12:13which is injury. Allah uses the word
- 12:15with a here in this ayah is an injury
- 12:19that goes inside the flesh all the way
- 12:21to the bone. When it reaches the bone
- 12:23that becomes
- 12:25Allah is saying the injury that you
- 12:27experience is not small. I know it cut
- 12:30you deep
- 12:35but you have to understand your enemy
- 12:38they also have a
- 12:40this time you got a last time in Badr
- 12:44they got a
- 12:46this time you lost many of your most
- 12:48precious Sahaba
- 12:50last time they lost some of their most
- 12:51important leaders
- 12:54exactly the same thing happened to them
- 12:56but look at them they're still motivated
- 12:58to fight you.
- 13:00They were the They were supposed to be
- 13:02depressed. They were supposed to lose
- 13:04all hope. But now they're coming back
- 13:05three times stronger than last time
- 13:08because the loss did not make them
- 13:10depressed. The loss made them more
- 13:12motivated.
- 13:14And Allah says, and what do they
- 13:16believe? They believe in shik and they
- 13:18became motivated. You have iman. You
- 13:20should be much more motivated than them.
- 13:23So what is Allah doing? Allah is reverse
- 13:26engineering crisis.
- 13:28When a believer goes through crisis,
- 13:31instead of the crisis becoming a reason
- 13:33to lose inspiration, the crisis becomes
- 13:36the fuel to become far more motivated
- 13:39than ever before. Allah would not give
- 13:42me a crisis unless he wants me to rise
- 13:44even higher.
- 13:46This is the formula.
- 13:52Allah says, "These are days that we flip
- 13:55between people. Sometimes Allah will
- 13:57give your enemy victory. Sometimes Allah
- 13:59will give you victory. But the victory
- 14:01will not be permanent. Your goal, my
- 14:03goal in this life is not victory.
- 14:06Because Allah himself says he keeps
- 14:08switching these days between people. I'm
- 14:11reminded even on the day of Makkah when
- 14:13Makkah was conquered. You would think
- 14:15okay Islam won finally all the enemies
- 14:18have been defeated. All the problem has
- 14:21been solved.
- 14:25All the people so many people are
- 14:27entering into Islam victory. Even then
- 14:31Allah revealed inah that there are many
- 14:34inside the people who are Muslim
- 14:40many of them are are sick with
- 14:42hypocrisy. You don't even know who they
- 14:44are. Allah knows who they are. The goal
- 14:47of the prophet sallallahu alaihi
- 14:48wasallam was to give iman to the world.
- 14:52And even at the end after the victory of
- 14:54Islam, Allah says actually even some of
- 14:56your followers don't have iman. They
- 14:58have
- 15:00which means you can never have 100%
- 15:02victory. There's no such thing. There's
- 15:05always going to be victory and loss and
- 15:07victory and loss and victory and loss.
- 15:09What do we find? Even soon after the
- 15:12passing of the prophet sallallahu alaihi
- 15:13wasallam, there's extreme difficulty
- 15:16among the Muslims, even among the
- 15:17Sahabah. Extreme difficulty. Then we
- 15:20find a period of great expansion of
- 15:22Islam. Many of us are Muslim today
- 15:25because of the expansion of Islam. Then
- 15:27there's decline of Islam. Then there's
- 15:29expansion. Then there's decline. Then
- 15:30there's expansion. So we we know
- 15:33something about the way the the the
- 15:35sunnah of Allah. It's always up and
- 15:37down. The situation is always up and
- 15:39down. It's never up only and it's never
- 15:41down only. So Allah says, why does he do
- 15:45this? Why does he keep not giving us
- 15:49good times permanently?
- 15:51Why give us hard times and then good
- 15:53time? He says
- 15:56in this ayah
- 16:04Allah wants to see who actually
- 16:06believes.
- 16:08Allah wants to expose who actually
- 16:10believes. What does that mean? It's easy
- 16:11to believe when everything is
- 16:13alhamdulillah.
- 16:15It's hard to be hard to be have high im
- 16:18when everything around you is
- 16:22when everything around you is but it's
- 16:25harder to have imah wants to see who has
- 16:28ims in hard times because that's real im
- 16:33is not when your team is winning
- 16:36you're a strong fan when your team is
- 16:38losing you leave the stadium
- 16:41right that's not real Ian if you're a
- 16:43real true believer even if your goal 10
- 16:46100 10 you're still stating there until
- 16:47the last minute because you're a true
- 16:50believer that's the mentality Allah
- 16:53wants Allah says I want to see who
- 16:55really believes in the unseen really
- 16:58believes in the unseen because victory
- 17:00is seen and when there is loss and
- 17:03there's difficulty then you don't see
- 17:05the help of Allah you don't see it when
- 17:08you don't see it it's harder to believe
- 17:09it Allah says that's why I gave you a
- 17:12hard time because I wanted to see how
- 17:14many of you can still believe in the
- 17:16promise of Allah even when you don't see
- 17:19it
- 17:25and Allah wanted to purify those who
- 17:28believe in Arabic
- 17:31is when you purify gold when you purify
- 17:35gold now gold is different when you
- 17:37purify for example when you're cleaning
- 17:39rice it's easy you just put water and
- 17:42you rinse the rice and all the fibers
- 17:43and everything else comes comes out,
- 17:45right? Easy to clean rice, easy to clean
- 17:49clothes. You can use some soap, some
- 17:51water, beat it, done. You can't clean
- 17:54gold that way. Gold, the impurity inside
- 17:58gold is not on the surface. It's deep
- 18:00inside.
- 18:02You can't access it. The only way to
- 18:04purify gold is you have to put it under
- 18:07extreme heat and you have to melt the
- 18:11gold and then deep inside the impurity
- 18:14the rock or the steel or whatever else
- 18:16was inside will burn and will get out
- 18:19and then you get the pure gold. Allah is
- 18:22saying to the Sahabah, I will put you
- 18:25under extreme heat circumstances
- 18:29because the benefit is there is
- 18:31something deep inside you that's not
- 18:32pure and the only way to get rid of it
- 18:36is extreme heat, extreme difficult
- 18:39situations.
- 18:41On the outside, a difficult situation is
- 18:43all always a problem. On the inside,
- 18:45Allah is saying a difficult situation
- 18:47purifies you.
- 18:50It removed some of the things that you
- 18:52would never know were there if
- 18:55difficulty didn't exist. If the
- 18:56temperature didn't exist on the outside
- 18:58it looks like gold, right? It just it
- 19:01looks like pure gold.
- 19:07And this is how he will eliminate people
- 19:09who didn't have iman to begin with. Some
- 19:11people when you when you burn the gold
- 19:13there was no iman inside. There was only
- 19:15a rock. Well, those people will be
- 19:17eliminated. Those people will be
- 19:19removed. They no longer want to believe.
- 19:21There are people who when they go
- 19:22through a difficult situation, they say,
- 19:24"I don't want to be a believer anymore.
- 19:26I don't want Islam anymore." Well, Allah
- 19:29says, "Yeah, that was the idea. Goodbye.
- 19:31There's the door."
- 19:33The the whole plan was to get rid of
- 19:35those people because they're only
- 19:38Muslim. They're only believers when it's
- 19:41convenient.
- 19:42Allah has no need of them and the um has
- 19:45no need of them.
- 19:48Then Allah says,
- 19:51this is the same ayat. He says to the
- 19:54Muslims, now you think you're just going
- 19:56to walk into Jenna? You think it's so
- 19:59easy to just enter Jenna?
- 20:02And then Allah says, uh,
- 20:07Allah has not yet exposed who among you
- 20:10really struggles and he hasn't exposed
- 20:12people who stay on target. I'm giving
- 20:16you a different translation of a for the
- 20:18purpose of this discussion.
- 20:21When you stay on target, imagine you're
- 20:24walking somewhere and it starts getting
- 20:26very windy, you keep walking. It starts
- 20:28raining, you keep walking. It gets very
- 20:30hot, you keep walking. It gets very
- 20:32cold, you keep walking. This is called
- 20:33subar.
- 20:35That's what sar is. In other words, the
- 20:38circumstances change, the weather
- 20:40changes, the environment changes. You
- 20:43have a target, you don't change. You
- 20:45keep moving towards your target.
- 20:47You don't change your direction because
- 20:50the situation changed. You stay on the
- 20:53same direction. That's called Allah
- 20:56says, "You think you can just walk into
- 20:57Jenna if I don't see you want to walk
- 20:59straight into Jenna? Let me see how
- 21:00straight you can walk in this life with
- 21:03the changing web."
- 21:06Then he describes
- 21:09something important for all the Muslims
- 21:12to understand.
- 21:14We it's easy for us to say ya Allah give
- 21:16us jah give us
- 21:19and give us shahada in your path. They
- 21:23were young sahaba who became Muslim
- 21:25after.
- 21:29So they never saw
- 21:31and then
- 21:33was preparing for
- 21:36and the strategy was we should stay
- 21:38inside Medina and defend against the
- 21:41kufur.
- 21:43Some of the young Sahabah said yasool
- 21:45Allah we didn't get to go to
- 21:48we want to enjoy shahada. Let's go to
- 21:52let's go meet the enemy in the
- 21:54battlefield because we want to face the
- 21:56enemy and have the same honor that the
- 21:59Sahabah in
- 22:01because they were excited to become
- 22:03shahim. Allah talks about these
- 22:07these young men. He says
- 22:13you were the same people that were
- 22:15wishing for death
- 22:17before you met death.
- 22:21So in theory you were very excited to be
- 22:23aim until you saw death
- 22:29and when you saw death you were staring
- 22:32at it and you couldn't stop looking like
- 22:35uh
- 22:36you were shocked.
- 22:39It's easy to be motivated without being
- 22:42put in the situation.
- 22:46Don't become overly excited and say big
- 22:48things when you know you don't know if
- 22:51you're ready for th those things or not.
- 22:54Allah knows whether you're ready or not.
- 22:56So even though their motivation is
- 22:57sincere, they were not ready. And Allah
- 23:00says you were not ready. And then of
- 23:03course all of their motivation came from
- 23:05the prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam.
- 23:07And now the prophet sallallahu alaihi
- 23:09wasallam is rumored. The rumor is he's
- 23:11been killed. The rumor was he's been
- 23:13killed. And he was almost killed.
- 23:16Allah says
- 23:18Muhammad is nothing but a messenger
- 23:20sallallahu alaihi wasallam as much as we
- 23:23love
- 23:25the message of Islam is bigger than
- 23:30Allah's personality sallallahu alaihi
- 23:32wasallam
- 23:34even if he died that is still not
- 23:37justification for you to lose motivation
- 23:41that's what Allah tells them this is how
- 23:43strong your iman in Allah must be even
- 23:46ifas is not there sallallahu alaihi
- 23:48wasallam even then you keep going
- 23:54messengers came before him too
- 23:57if he died if he was killed
- 24:02you're going to turn back if the prophet
- 24:05died your motivation is gone
- 24:12and whoever turns back they cannot harm
- 24:15Allah in any way. They're only harming
- 24:16themselves.
- 24:19Allah is going to be great. Allah will
- 24:21compensate. Allah will reward people who
- 24:23were truly grateful. Meaning they were
- 24:25grateful. They even saw for one day.
- 24:29That was enough for them. Now they can
- 24:31carry that motivation for life. They
- 24:34don't they don't say until he comes and
- 24:36personally motivates me, I'm not feeling
- 24:38motivated.
- 24:39Now we live in the age of the an
- 24:41addiction to motivation. People want to
- 24:43see something inspiring on Tik Tok. You
- 24:45want to see something inspiring on
- 24:47YouTube and then your inspiration goes
- 24:49low, you got to see it again. Then it
- 24:51goes low, you got to see it again,
- 24:53right? And guess what? You're never
- 24:55inspired because that's not how
- 24:58inspiration comes. It comes from
- 24:59conviction.
- 25:01They're being told even the most
- 25:02inspiring human being that ever lived,
- 25:04sallallahu alaihi wasallam, even if he
- 25:06leads, you still remain on this on the
- 25:09track.
- 25:17And then Allah says
- 25:21it's not allowed for anybody to die
- 25:22except Allah wants them to die.
- 25:26This is written for all of us. There's a
- 25:28limited time that we're here. Allah just
- 25:30wants to see if we stay on course or
- 25:32not. This this passage that Allah gave
- 25:35us inah Iran one ayah after the other.
- 25:38In the end, Allah just told us the final
- 25:40motivation.
- 25:47Whoever wants the reward of this life,
- 25:51we will give it. Whoever wants the
- 25:54reward of the next life, we will give
- 25:55it. What does this mean? If you want the
- 25:58reward of this life, then you join the
- 26:01winner. If you want the reward of this
- 26:03life, you run away from the loser.
- 26:06The moment things become difficult, you
- 26:08go where things are easy because you
- 26:10want the reward of this life. You want
- 26:12the reward of the next life, you stay on
- 26:14track. Many of you younger folks, for
- 26:17example, you want to get in better
- 26:18health. Yeah. You want to lose weight,
- 26:21you want to become more fit, etc., etc.
- 26:23Yeah. Right in front of you is a
- 26:25chocolate cake.
- 26:27It looks good. You're looking at the
- 26:29chocolate cake. The chocolate cake is
- 26:30looking at you.
- 26:33If you eat it, it's going to feel good
- 26:34right now.
- 26:36But you say, "No, I have to wait 3
- 26:38months until I fix myself and then I'll
- 26:41look at the chocolate cake. I'll avoid
- 26:43it." The only way you can get real
- 26:47reward is if you deny immediate
- 26:50pleasure.
- 26:52You have to stop yourself from immediate
- 26:55impulses to get to the final outcome.
- 26:58This is true in a person's personal
- 27:00life. This is true as a nation. This is
- 27:02true as you know a student. This is true
- 27:05as an ummah, an entire um we have to
- 27:08think long term and we have to stop
- 27:10jumping at every new opportunity and
- 27:11say, "Okay, we just want this one. We
- 27:13just all we care about is this. All we
- 27:15care about is this." Then we have no
- 27:16real journey. We have no real agenda.
- 27:26Finally, inshallah, I'm going to leave
- 27:28you with a dua that Allah taught us. How
- 27:30do you build this kind of
- 27:33maturity? Because in the end, this
- 27:36entire is about maturity, right? How do
- 27:39you stay constant and have in your dean
- 27:43and you don't let the situation make you
- 27:45fluctuate? This is the dua that Allah
- 27:47gave us of the people before us.
- 27:54Our our master forgive our embarrassing
- 27:57mistakes.
- 28:00and forgive our extreme decisions.
- 28:04Sometimes we overreact and we do extreme
- 28:06things. Ya Allah forgive our sins.
- 28:08Forgive the excess or extreme actions
- 28:10that we take in our decisions
- 28:14and make our feet firm. Make us stable
- 28:21and aid us against help us against
- 28:22disbelieving people. This is the dua of
- 28:26this is the dua that when you're in
- 28:28depression and you feel unmotivated and
- 28:31you feel and you feel and you feel
- 28:34what's the point now I don't have any
- 28:35inspiration. Well, here's a dua for you
- 28:38because the what the people at
- 28:40experienced is much more depressing than
- 28:41what you and I can experience. Much more
- 28:44depressing. And this dua was for them.
- 28:46So this dua is definitely for us.
- 28:55This is ayia number 147 of Alan. Make it
- 28:59a point to memorize this dua for
- 29:01yourself. Inshallah tala it will help
- 29:03you and may allahel raise all of us from
- 29:05any of the depression or sadness or par
- 29:08paralysis we might be feeling and make
- 29:10us an umah that's truly truly believers
- 29:12and never experience a state of
- 29:14weakness.
- 29:21Alhamdulillah.
- 29:38regime.
- 29:56Allham.
