What You Seek is Also Seeking You - Watts Wisdom — Transcript

- 0:01You know, um
- 0:04one of the strangest things you discover
- 0:06[music]
- 0:08once you really begin looking at your
- 0:10own mind
- 0:12is that
- 0:13>> [music]
- 0:13>> life has this peculiar way
- 0:17of giving you what you want
- 0:20but only after you stop clutching at it.
- 0:24It's very Zen, really.
- 0:27The old masters used to say
- 0:30"To hold the world
- 0:32loosen your [music] grip."
- 0:35Which sounds absurd, like trying to pick
- 0:37up water with open hands. [music]
- 0:40But the more tightly you squeeze
- 0:42the more the river slips through your
- 0:44[music] fingers.
- 0:47Most people spend their lives tightening
- 0:49their psychological fists.
- 0:52Straining.
- 0:53Forcing.
- 0:54Grasping.
- 0:56Hoping that sheer tension will bring
- 0:59them peace.
- 1:01But that tension only creates friction.
- 1:05It's like trying to make the wind blow
- 1:08by blowing harder yourself.
- 1:12Um [music] yet the moment you exhale
- 1:16the moment you stop trying to make life
- 1:19bend to your will
- 1:21something softens.
- 1:24The energy [music] shifts.
- 1:27What you were chasing
- 1:29love
- 1:30success
- 1:32clarity
- 1:34begins to drift toward [music] you in
- 1:36the most unexpected way.
- 1:40>> [music]
- 1:40>> The Buddhists call this wu wei.
- 1:44Effortless action.
- 1:46It doesn't mean laziness.
- 1:49It means allowing
- 1:51>> [music]
- 1:51>> instead of insisting.
- 1:54When you insist you push life away.
- 1:59When you allow,
- 2:00life approaches you as naturally as
- 2:03breath entering the lungs.
- 2:07And the reason is simple.
- 2:09When you cling,
- 2:11>> [music]
- 2:11>> you're saying, "I don't trust life to
- 2:14hold me."
- 2:16But when you let go, genuinely let go,
- 2:20you affirm the ancient Zen truth.
- 2:24You already have everything you need to
- 2:27meet the moment.
- 2:30So, um
- 2:32letting go is not passive.
- 2:35It's not resignation.
- 2:38It's the recognition that reality is a
- 2:41dance, not a tug-of-war.
- 2:45The more you loosen your stance,
- 2:48the more gracefully you can move with
- 2:50it.
- 2:52And in that quiet relaxation,
- 2:55life finally has the space to come
- 2:58toward you.
- 2:58>> [music]
- 3:00>> You see, um
- 3:02most of our suffering comes from a very
- 3:05subtle confusion.
- 3:08We trust fear
- 3:10more than we trust life.
- 3:13Fear feels familiar.
- 3:16It feels practical.
- 3:18It whispers, "Hold tighter.
- 3:21Plan harder.
- 3:23Don't you dare relax."
- 3:27And so, we tense ourselves like a bow
- 3:30pulled to its breaking point,
- 3:33believing tension will somehow improve
- 3:36our aim. [music]
- 3:39But Zen,
- 3:41our Zen has an entirely different
- 3:43flavor.
- 3:45The masters would say,
- 3:47"The tighter the [music] string, the
- 3:49poorer of music.
- 3:52Fear is a tightening.
- 3:54>> [music]
- 3:55>> Trust is the release that allows the
- 3:58melody of life to [music] actually play.
- 4:03Now, trust does not mean that everything
- 4:06[music] will go your way.
- 4:09That would simply be fear wearing
- 4:11[music] a spiritual costume.
- 4:15Trust means you understand that life is
- 4:18wiser than your anxieties.
- 4:22>> [music]
- 4:22>> That the universe
- 4:23um
- 4:24moves with an intelligence far older
- 4:28than your plans.
- 4:31When you act from fear, your energy
- 4:34narrows.
- 4:35Your vision contracts.
- 4:38You see only one path,
- 4:41the one you're gripping with white
- 4:43knuckles.
- 4:45But when you move with trust,
- 4:48your awareness widens like a lantern in
- 4:51a dark room. [music]
- 4:53You start noticing paths you didn't even
- 4:56realize existed.
- 4:59It's not magic.
- 5:01It's clarity.
- 5:03Fear says, "I must control everything."
- 5:07>> [music]
- 5:08>> Trust says, "I'll participate, but I
- 5:11will not cling."
- 5:14And somewhere between those two lines of
- 5:16thought lies the entire art of living.
- 5:21In Zen, they call this shinjin
- 5:24datsuraku, [music]
- 5:26dropping off body and mind,
- 5:30which simply means
- 5:32let the heavy parts of you fall away
- 5:35>> [music]
- 5:35>> so your naturalness can return.
- 5:39When you trust, your energy becomes
- 5:42open,
- 5:43>> [music]
- 5:43>> fluid,
- 5:44receptive.
- 5:46People feel it.
- 5:48>> [music]
- 5:48>> Opportunities feel it.
- 5:51Life feels it.
- 5:54Not because you're begging for something
- 5:56to happen,
- 5:57but because you're no longer blocking
- 5:59>> [music]
- 5:59>> what was trying to happen all along.
- 6:04So, um
- 6:06trust is not naive.
- 6:09It is not foolish.
- 6:12It is simply the courageous decision to
- 6:14let life be bigger than your fear.
- 6:18And in that decision,
- 6:20reality begins to respond in ways that
- 6:24fear never could.
- 6:27And uh
- 6:29one of the curious things about being
- 6:30human
- 6:32is that we're forever trying to make
- 6:35life behave.
- 6:37We push, we prod,
- 6:39we strategize, [music]
- 6:42as if existence were some stubborn
- 6:45machine that only works
- 6:46>> [music]
- 6:46>> when we shove it hard enough.
- 6:50But life um is not a machine at all.
- 6:55It behaves much more like a river.
- 6:58You don't make a river flow by pushing
- 7:00[music] the water.
- 7:03You move with it,
- 7:05or you're swept under.
- 7:07And this you see is the very heart of
- 7:10Zen.
- 7:12The masters would watch the streams
- 7:14moving through the mountains and [music]
- 7:15say,
- 7:17"Notice how water wins by yielding.
- 7:21Water never forces its way through
- 7:23[music] stone.
- 7:25It simply finds the opening.
- 7:28And in [music] time, even the stone
- 7:30gives way."
- 7:33Now, compare this to how we often live.
- 7:36We get [music] anxious. We rush.
- 7:40We tighten our shoulders and believe
- 7:42intensity [music] equals progress.
- 7:46But all that intensity does is create
- 7:49turbulence.
- 7:51Little whirlpools of frustration.
- 7:54Have you noticed that the best
- 7:56friendships,
- 7:57the most meaningful [music]
- 7:58opportunities
- 8:00arrive not when you're desperately
- 8:02searching, but when you're simply
- 8:04present.
- 8:06Not passive,
- 8:07>> [music]
- 8:07>> present.
- 8:09Life reveals itself when you stop trying
- 8:12to drag the future into the room before
- 8:15[music] it's ready.
- 8:17Um
- 8:19In Zen they speak of mushin.
- 8:22The mind without unnecessary motion.
- 8:26Not empty, [music]
- 8:27not blank, but uncluttered.
- 8:31Like a still pond reflecting the sky.
- 8:35When your mind becomes like that,
- 8:38life mirrors clarity back to you.
- 8:42The right people drift in.
- 8:44The right experiences unfold with less
- 8:47noise and more natural rhythm.
- 8:51You're not forcing life to respond.
- 8:54You're allowing it to respond.
- 8:58And when you tune into this flow,
- 9:00you begin to see that the universe was
- 9:03never withholding anything from you.
- 9:06You were simply moving against the
- 9:08current.
- 9:09Insisting the river should bend to your
- 9:12will.
- 9:13The moment you ease the resistance, just
- 9:16a little, [music]
- 9:18life begins to show you the path it
- 9:20already prepared.
- 9:23That's not weakness, that's
- 9:25intelligence. [music]
- 9:26That's wisdom.
- 9:29Because um
- 9:30the river has always known where it was
- 9:33going.
- 9:34You were the one trying to paddle
- 9:36upstream.
- 9:38This reminds me of something uh
- 9:42The irony of existence
- 9:44is that we spend our lives trying to
- 9:46control things
- 9:48that were never in our control to begin
- 9:50with.
- 9:52We draw maps, make plans,
- 9:55tighten our grip on the steering wheel,
- 9:58only to discover, again and again,
- 10:01that life has a far stranger
- 10:03choreography
- 10:04than anything we could choreograph
- 10:06ourselves.
- 10:08The mind hates this, [music] of course.
- 10:11It wants certainty the way a child wants
- 10:14a nightlight.
- 10:16It says, "Tell me how it will unfold.
- 10:19Tell me now." [music]
- 10:22But reality doesn't operate by deadlines
- 10:24or demands.
- 10:26It moves like weather,
- 10:28unpredictable, organic,
- 10:31and completely uninterested in your
- 10:33expectations.
- 10:35In Zen, they speak [music] of the great
- 10:38doubt.
- 10:40Not doubt as in pessimism,
- 10:42but doubt as in surrendering the fantasy
- 10:45[music] that you can intellectually pin
- 10:47down the universe.
- 10:49Because the universe isn't an equation.
- 10:53It's a mystery, alive, moving,
- 10:56>> [music]
- 10:56>> breathing.
- 10:58And the more you insist on controlling
- 11:00it,
- 11:01the more it slips through [music] your
- 11:02fingers.
- 11:04Have you ever noticed that when
- 11:06something unexpected [music] happens,
- 11:09something that shatters your carefully
- 11:11drawn plans, you panic?
- 11:14You think,
- 11:15"This is the worst thing that could have
- 11:17happened."
- 11:19Then, months later, you look back and
- 11:22realize,
- 11:23"Ah,
- 11:25that was the turn I actually needed."
- 11:28Um
- 11:30Life has a habit of rearranging us in
- 11:33ways our minds would never approve of
- 11:36yet always seem to benefit us [music] in
- 11:38the long run.
- 11:40It's as if life sees your path from
- 11:42above
- 11:44and you see it only from the ground.
- 11:47So you cling to the familiar
- 11:49even when it blocks the very opening
- 11:51you've been hoping for.
- 11:54You cannot control the timing or the
- 11:56shape or the form of [music] what comes
- 11:59your way.
- 12:00But you can control the way you respond.
- 12:03>> [music]
- 12:04>> And that ironically is where true power
- 12:07lives.
- 12:09The Zen monks used to say,
- 12:11>> [music]
- 12:12>> "When you try to hold the wind, your
- 12:14hands stay empty.
- 12:16When you open them, the breeze passes
- 12:18[music] through
- 12:20yet you feel everything."
- 12:23Control is an illusion.
- 12:25Presence is [music] real.
- 12:28Trust is real.
- 12:30Awareness is real.
- 12:33And once you [music] stop wrestling life
- 12:35into neat little categories,
- 12:37once you stop insisting that things must
- 12:40unfold according to your script,
- 12:43you begin to notice a subtle
- 12:45intelligence guiding [music] you.
- 12:47Not loud,
- 12:49not dramatic.
- 12:51Just a quiet sense that somehow despite
- 12:54everything,
- 12:55>> [music]
- 12:55>> you are being carried.
- 12:58And that feeling
- 12:59um
- 13:01that quiet surrender
- 13:03is worth more than all the certainty in
- 13:05the world.
- 13:07It's a funny thing,
- 13:09>> [music]
- 13:09>> but life often reveals its wisdom not
- 13:11when everything is going well,
- 13:14but precisely when everything seems
- 13:15[music] to be falling apart.
- 13:18We assume collapse is a punishment,
- 13:21a sign that we've gone off course.
- 13:24But from the Zen point of view,
- 13:27collapse is sometimes the only way the
- 13:29old structure can make [music] room for
- 13:31the new.
- 13:33The monks would say,
- 13:35"When the cup is full,
- 13:37it must be emptied.
- 13:39Not because the tea was wrong,
- 13:42but because you're ready for something
- 13:44you don't yet have space to receive."
- 13:48So, when something in your life breaks,
- 13:51a relationship, an opportunity, a plan,
- 13:55our first instinct is to [music] panic.
- 13:58The ego screams, "This shouldn't be
- 14:01happening. Not now."
- 14:05But, life is not concerned with the
- 14:06ego's timing.
- 14:09Um in fact, it often rearranges things
- 14:11precisely [music] when we feel most
- 14:14unprepared.
- 14:16And here's the hidden teaching.
- 14:19What falls apart
- 14:21is very often what was quietly
- 14:23constricting you.
- 14:25It's just that you were too close to see
- 14:27it.
- 14:30You know those moments where you look
- 14:31[music] back months later and think,
- 14:34"If that hadn't collapsed,
- 14:36I'd still be stuck in that version of
- 14:38myself."
- 14:41Yes,
- 14:42that is the Zen insight.
- 14:45Zen is full of stories where students go
- 14:47to their master saying,
- 14:49>> [music]
- 14:49>> "Everything is ruined."
- 14:52And the master smiles gently and
- 14:54replies,
- 14:55"Good.
- 14:56Now you can [music] see."
- 14:59Because when things come undone,
- 15:01>> [music]
- 15:02>> the illusions loosen.
- 15:04The clinging loosens.
- 15:07The identity you'd been gripping
- 15:09>> [music]
- 15:09>> loosens.
- 15:12And in that loosening,
- 15:13you begin to glimpse a freedom
- 15:16that was hidden behind the form you were
- 15:18trying so hard to preserve.
- 15:22The truth is,
- 15:24um life answers your deeper needs, not
- 15:27your surface desires.
- 15:30And sometimes the deeper need [music] is
- 15:32for a door to close,
- 15:34so you can finally notice the open one
- 15:37>> [music]
- 15:37>> right behind you.
- 15:40Things fall apart, not to punish you,
- 15:43>> [music]
- 15:43>> but to redirect you.
- 15:46Not to diminish you, but to unburden
- 15:48you.
- 15:50Not to take something from you,
- 15:52but to return you to your own path.
- 15:56And once you understand this,
- 15:59once you stop seeing collapse as a
- 16:01failure,
- 16:02you begin to trust the profound
- 16:04intelligence beneath every unraveling.
- 16:09You begin to realize that life is not
- 16:11breaking you.
- 16:13It is breaking you open.
- 16:15And there's something quite marvelous
- 16:18about a person who trusts [music] life.
- 16:21Not blindly,
- 16:23not foolishly,
- 16:25but with that quiet inner confidence
- 16:27that says,
- 16:29"I can move without gripping everything
- 16:31to death."
- 16:34People like this have a kind of
- 16:35atmosphere around them.
- 16:38Not flashy, not loud,
- 16:41more like a gentle field of calm
- 16:43>> [music]
- 16:43>> that draws others in without effort.
- 16:47It's what the Zen monks used to call
- 16:49[music]
- 16:50fudoshin,
- 16:51the immovable mind.
- 16:54Not rigid, but steady.
- 16:57Like a mountain that doesn't need to
- 16:59[music] announce itself.
- 17:01Trust gives you that quality.
- 17:05You see, when you're desperate for
- 17:07something to turn out a certain way,
- 17:10your energy becomes sharp,
- 17:12almost brittle.
- 17:15And other people feel that brittleness,
- 17:17even if you never say a word.
- 17:21But when you trust, your energy [music]
- 17:23softens.
- 17:25You become approachable,
- 17:27warm, unguarded.
- 17:30Life feels [music] safe around you.
- 17:33And so it approaches you more freely.
- 17:37>> [music]
- 17:37>> It's a bit like trying to coax a small
- 17:39animal toward you.
- 17:42If you stand there trembling with
- 17:43neediness, the creature scurries away.
- 17:48But if you settle yourself,
- 17:50breathe, relax your posture,
- 17:53eventually it wanders right into your
- 17:55hands.
- 17:58Um trust [music] works the same way.
- 18:01It's not passive.
- 18:03It's receptive.
- 18:05The universe responds to the state of
- 18:07your [music] being,
- 18:09far more than the noise of your effort.
- 18:13When you trust, you emit a kind of
- 18:15silent permission for life to meet you
- 18:18halfway.
- 18:19>> [music]
- 18:20>> Think of the great Zen masters.
- 18:24They walked through the world not with
- 18:26arrogance,
- 18:28but with a quiet certainty.
- 18:30A sense that nothing needed forcing.
- 18:34That certainty is magnetic,
- 18:37because it says,
- 18:39"I am aligned with life, not fighting
- 18:42[music] it.
- 18:43I am not chasing.
- 18:45I am allowing.
- 18:47I don't need the outcome to prove
- 18:49anything about who I am."
- 18:52When you carry this inner spaciousness,
- 18:55people feel safe in your presence.
- 18:57[music]
- 18:59Opportunities gravitate toward you.
- 19:02Situations unfold more smoothly.
- 19:06Not because you manifested harder,
- 19:10but because you stopped interfering with
- 19:12the natural rhythm of things.
- 19:15And once you realize that trust creates
- 19:18more movement than fear ever could,
- 19:22you begin to understand one of life's
- 19:24most beautiful paradoxes. [music]
- 19:27The softer your energy becomes, the
- 19:30stronger your reality responds.
- 19:33Not by force,
- 19:35by resonance.
- 19:38And uh
- 19:39reality has this subtle way of
- 19:42responding to you
- 19:43that most people never notice.
- 19:47Not through words,
- 19:49not through signs on the wall,
- 19:52but through the texture of your inner
- 19:54state.
- 19:57It's as if life says, [music]
- 19:59"Show me how you are being,
- 20:02and I'll show you what unfolds."
- 20:06There's a kind of silent contract you
- 20:09make with [music] existence.
- 20:11Not with ink,
- 20:13but with your energy.
- 20:16When you walk around
- 20:18doubting yourself, [music]
- 20:20doubting life,
- 20:22seeing obstacles everywhere,
- 20:25life mirrors that doubt back to you.
- 20:29Situations jam.
- 20:32People pull [music] away.
- 20:34Paths twist into knots.
- 20:38Not because you're cursed,
- 20:40but because your inner posture is one of
- 20:43resistance.
- 20:46In Zen, they'd call this
- 20:48the mind that meets the world with a
- 20:51closed hand.
- 20:53And a closed hand
- 20:55>> [music]
- 20:55>> can neither give nor receive.
- 21:00But when you trust,
- 21:01truly trust,
- 21:03your posture changes.
- 21:06Your energy loosens.
- 21:08>> [music]
- 21:09>> You become more open,
- 21:11more fluid,
- 21:13more aligned with the rhythm of things.
- 21:17>> [music]
- 21:17>> And life responds to that openness
- 21:20with its own form of generosity.
- 21:23It's not personal.
- 21:25>> [music]
- 21:25>> It's responsive.
- 21:28Um
- 21:30imagine two musicians improvising
- 21:33together.
- 21:35One clings to the sheet music,
- 21:38terrified to make a mistake.
- 21:41The other listens,
- 21:43breathes,
- 21:44and flows with the moment.
- 21:48The second creates beauty,
- 21:50not because they're better,
- 21:52but because they trust the unfolding.
- 21:56Life improvises with you in exactly that
- 21:59way.
- 22:01When you meet reality with tension,
- 22:04it stiffens.
- 22:06When you meet it with trust, it expands.
