  19. 0:31and i look at those and remember back to
  20. 0:33when i was a kid
  21. 0:35my brothers and i would pile into pickup
  22. 0:37trucks with all the boy scouts in town
  23. 0:39everybody would get a handful of flags

  30. 0:54and we'd go to the baseball field and
  31. 0:56the politicians would give mercifully
  32. 0:58brief speeches and then then there'd be
  33. 1:01a baseball game and a cookout
  34. 1:03i mean it's that kind of memory that i
  35. 1:06have my brothers and i all have
  36. 1:08and i hope that there's americans
  37. 1:10elsewhere around the country celebrating
  38. 1:12this weekend
  39. 1:13just like that when you were that boy
  40. 1:15scout
  41. 1:16in upstate new york doing that i doubt
  42. 1:18you looked forward and
  43. 1:20had any idea that one day you would be
  44. 1:21in combat in vietnam
  45. 1:23uh the jungles of southeast asia
  46. 1:26fighting not only for our country but
  47. 1:28literally fighting for your life
  48. 1:32there must be times looking back and
  49. 1:34especially when you go to the wall
  50. 1:36and see the names of those you served
  51. 1:38with the memorial day
  52. 1:40is a very painful day as well a day to
  53. 1:43remember those that
  54. 1:44you were shoulder to shoulder with they
  55. 1:46didn't come home
  56. 1:48you know i just uh a few weeks ago got
  57. 1:51to send the wall the mobile wall the
  58. 1:53wall that heals on its way around
  59. 1:56to 20 states 26 cities none of the major
  60. 2:00metropolitan areas
  61. 2:01and on that wall are some very very dear
  62. 2:03friends that lost their lives
  63. 2:06guys who graduated just before me at the
  64. 2:07academy and some just afterwards
  65. 2:10i look at that and i remember those guys
  66. 2:12particularly the night of the 28th of
  67. 2:14july 1969
  68. 2:16worst night of my life uh it took me
  69. 2:19years before i could go visit the wall
  70. 2:21in dc and i do that every year i
  71. 2:24try to make sure that it gets over the
  72. 2:26this memorial day weekend
  73. 2:28but the bottom line of it is the
  74. 2:30recognition that this country does for
  75. 2:32those who perished
  76. 2:34in service to our country is a very very
  77. 2:37special moment for americans
  78. 2:39and you know we're still the only
  79. 2:40country on earth
  80. 2:42that will send its sons and daughters as
  81. 2:44volunteers
  82. 2:45around the globe to protect our country
  83. 2:48and
  84. 2:49offer others the hope of freedom uh
  85. 2:51you've written over 18
  86. 2:52best-selling books the latest one called
  87. 2:55veterans
  88. 2:55lament what is that book going to tell
  89. 2:58the reader because
  90. 2:59obviously when you write that many
  91. 3:01best-selling books this is one people
  92. 3:03are going to want to get from colonel
  93. 3:04north
  94. 3:05what will they learn well they'll learn
  95. 3:07that we interviewed
  96. 3:08500 people now it's two marines who
  97. 3:10wrote the books and it's not picking on
  98. 3:12any particular service
  99. 3:14500 veterans of ours of service to our
  100. 3:16country going all the way back in some
  101. 3:18cases
  102. 3:19to the vietnam war and coming right up
  103. 3:21to the current conflict that is finally
  104. 3:23ending
  105. 3:24when we we've interviewed these people
  106. 3:26it was before the election
  107. 3:28and yet many of the issues that we now
  108. 3:30see happening to the to this country
  109. 3:33turning the military for example into a
  110. 3:36i guess a social justice warriors
  111. 3:39that kind of thing was on the minds of
  112. 3:41those
  113. 3:42who we interviewed and these veterans
  114. 3:44looked at what's happening in our
  115. 3:46in our country spiritually politically
  116. 3:48economically
  117. 3:50militarily and they voiced their
  118. 3:52concerns is this the country that i
  119. 3:54fought for
  120. 3:55and many of them are now saying as we're
  121. 3:56going back and re-interviewing some and
  122. 3:58interviewing some other new ones
  123. 4:00this is something really different today
  124. 4:02than it was when we signed up to fight
  125. 4:04and i'm not entirely sure that many of
  126. 4:06them would still
  127. 4:07send or encourage their sons daughters
  128. 4:10to go off and serve
  129. 4:11in this quote new era of political
  130. 4:14correctness
  131. 4:15colonel is it possible to get the
  132. 4:17military back on track and
  133. 4:19and to stop this trend of politicizing
  134. 4:21and weaponizing
  135. 4:22our great military institutions
  136. 4:26and having them once again a meritocracy
  137. 4:29where the the cream truly rises to the
  138. 4:31top
  139. 4:33it is possible and what's going to have
  140. 4:35to happen
  141. 4:36is that god willing in 2022 the american
  142. 4:40people will say
  143. 4:41it's enough is enough and they're going
  144. 4:43to appoint and elect
  145. 4:44rather republicans to public office
