  18. 0:32If you are having an Australian
  19. 0:33Shepherd, it is super, super exciting.
  20. 0:36However, on that first day when you
  21. 0:37bring them home as a puppy, what do you
  22. 0:39actually do? Well, today, we're going to
  23. 0:41be tuning into a webinar that canine
  24. 0:43behaviorist and founder of
  25. 0:44fenrircaninleaders.com,
  26. 0:45Will, has recorded all about what to do
  27. 0:48when you get your puppy home. So, over
  28. 0:50to you, Will.
  29. 0:50So, here we are, guys, back with another
  30. 0:52quick-fire webinar, and today we're
  31. 0:53going to be talking about the things
  32. 0:55that you absolutely need to do as soon
  33. 0:57as you bring your new puppy home. Now,
  34. 1:00what I've done is I've broken it down
  35. 1:01into my top five tips, and these are
  36. 1:02applicable whether you've just got a new
  37. 1:04puppy and you're taking your new puppy
  38. 1:05home, or maybe you're starting to be
  39. 1:07interested in getting into a career of
  40. 1:10working with dogs, and these are the
  41. 1:11kind of things that you want to be
  42. 1:12encouraging your clients to be thinking
  43. 1:14about and starting the second they bring
  44. 1:17their puppy home. So, my first point in
  45. 1:19the number five spot is to get a plan
  46. 1:21and get a routine. I can't stress that
  47. 1:24enough. The people that have the most
  48. 1:25amount of success as quickly as possible
  49. 1:28are the people that have done the
  50. 1:29research up front. They've put that hard
  51. 1:31work up front, and then they're ready.
  52. 1:33They know exactly what they're going to
  53. 1:35do. They've got a routine in place.
  54. 1:36They've got a time management grid in
  55. 1:38place. They know what they're going to
  56. 1:39be working on, when they're going to be
  57. 1:41working on it, and more importantly, why
  58. 1:44they're going to be working on those
  59. 1:45things with the new puppy. If you've
  60. 1:46done that work up front, the stress
  61. 1:48levels come down drastically. It allows
  62. 1:51you to be a more calm, consistent
  63. 1:52leader, and it allows you to know this
  64. 1:54is what I'm going to be doing, this is
  65. 1:56when I'm going to be doing it, and this
  66. 1:57is why I'm doing that thing, and I've
  67. 1:58got to trust in the process and the plan
  68. 2:01that I'm moving forward. Now, there is
  69. 2:02lots of different plans out there. Of
  70. 2:03course, I'm going to be very biased to
  71. 2:05my own Perfect Puppy Course. That's the
  72. 2:07plan that I've created and the one that
  73. 2:09thousands of my clients have found
  74. 2:10useful, but you don't have to follow
  75. 2:12that. If you want to follow another plan
  76. 2:13that you find um more applicable to your
  77. 2:16style, that's completely okay, as well.
  78. 2:19I just want to recommend get a plan.
  79. 2:20Now, if you're sat at home and you just
  80. 2:22picked up your puppy today, it's not
  81. 2:24ideal, but it's definitely not too late.
  82. 2:26So, right now, use this as motivation.
  83. 2:28If it wants to be our Perfect Puppy
  84. 2:29Course, there'll be a link down below.
  85. 2:31If you want to go with a different
  86. 2:32trainer's course or philosophy, again,
  87. 2:34just choose a plan that resonates with
  88. 2:36you, research it, and get ready to put
  89. 2:38it into place straight away. Catch up on
  90. 2:41those few hours, maybe those couple of
  91. 2:42days that you're behind, but get that
  92. 2:44plan in place, get that routine in
  93. 2:46place, and you'll be able to get off to
  94. 2:48an amazing start. Which ties in with my
  95. 2:50next point, and that is to start from
  96. 2:53the very first seconds you meet your new
  97. 2:56puppy. Now, again, if you're watching
  98. 2:58this video preemptively and proactively,
  99. 3:00fantastic. Cuz now you're going to be
  100. 3:01able to ready to know, right, here we
  101. 3:03go. I'm ready to start. I haven't met my
  102. 3:05puppy yet, and I'm ready to get going.
  103. 3:07If you're watching this again, because
  104. 3:09you've just got your new puppy, maybe
  105. 3:10you've had your puppy for a couple of
  106. 3:11days, the second you finish watching
  107. 3:13this video, get after it. Find a plan
  108. 3:17and put it in place. Do not wait until
  109. 3:19your puppy is 3 months, 6 months, 12
  110. 3:22months old before you start really
  111. 3:24trying to put these things into
  112. 3:25practice. You have to start from the
  113. 3:27second you get your new dog. That
  114. 3:30doesn't just mean doing 5 minutes of
  115. 3:31training once every other day or going
  116. 3:34to one training session at a weekend for
  117. 3:361 hour a week. I mean, from now,
  118. 3:39displaying calm, consistent leadership
  119. 3:41every second of every day and every
  120. 3:43interaction you have with your new dog.
  121. 3:46It's how you live with your dog, is far
  122. 3:48more important than the fraction of the
  123. 3:50time you spend training your dog. Now,
  124. 3:52training your dog is important, but
  125. 3:55manners and socialization and leadership
  126. 3:57and relationship are equally, if not
  127. 3:59more, important. So, start the second
  128. 4:02you meet your dog. Build that trust. Let
  129. 4:05that dog see you
  130. 4:07as its calm, consistent leader that it
  131. 4:08can look to for guidance and direction,
  132. 4:10no matter what circumstance or situation
  133. 4:12it finds itself in, and you will be a
  134. 4:15fantastic dog owner that has a dog that
  135. 4:17is just a pleasure to be around. Get
  136. 4:19after it straight away. Now, if you're
  137. 4:22looking for something to get started
  138. 4:23with on day one, toilet training. Again,
  139. 4:26do not wait. Do not be lazy. Be
  140. 4:28disciplined and routined. Again, we
  141. 4:30cover toilet training at length in my
  142. 4:32perfect puppy course, and we've got
  143. 4:33loads of videos here on YouTube talking
  144. 4:35about potty training or toilet training,
  145. 4:37whatever you call it from wherever you
  146. 4:38are in the world. But again, from the
  147. 4:40second you bring your dog home, get
  148. 4:42started on toilet training. To give a
  149. 4:44very quick summary of how we go about
  150. 4:46toilet training puppies and how we teach
  151. 4:48our clients to toilet train their
  152. 4:49puppies, is set an alarm on your phone
  153. 4:52every hour on the hour. Take your dog
  154. 4:55out and give them the opportunity to go
  155. 4:56to the toilet. If they do a number one
  156. 4:58or number two when they're outside in
  157. 4:59the designated spot that you've chosen,
  158. 5:01lavishly praise and reward them and let
  159. 5:03them know, "Excellent job. I really
  160. 5:05enjoyed that." On top of on the hour
  161. 5:08every hour, when they've had something
  162. 5:09to eat, when they've had a drink, or
  163. 5:11when they've just woke up from a nap,
  164. 5:12take them outside and give them the
  165. 5:14opportunity to go for a number one or
  166. 5:15number two. If you are routined,
  167. 5:17militant, and disciplined, it is very
  168. 5:20common for people that are willing to
  169. 5:21put in that level of effort to never
  170. 5:24have a toilet accident ever with their
  171. 5:26puppy from the second they bring it
  172. 5:27home. Set your puppy up for success. Be
  173. 5:30a calm, consistent leader, and do don't
  174. 5:32set them up to fail. If you get ahead of
  175. 5:34the game, set them up, and give them
  176. 5:36plenty of opportunities to go and do the
  177. 5:38right thing in the right place, lavishly
  178. 5:41reward and praise that, toilet training
  179. 5:43is a breeze. If you wait for those bad
  180. 5:45habits to settle in, the dog starts to
  181. 5:47have accidents in the house. No matter
  182. 5:49how thoroughly you clean it, they can
  183. 5:50probably smell it. It starts to become a
  184. 5:52learned behavior. Many owners react in
  185. 5:54the wrong way by using the wrong kinds
  186. 5:56of punishment at the wrong time, causing
  187. 5:58more confusion, breaking down your
  188. 6:00relationship, breaking down trust, and
  189. 6:02it's the start of a vicious cycle to a
  190. 6:04poorly behaved dog. Routine, discipline,
  191. 6:07structure, get after it, hard work,
  192. 6:09effort. I can't stress those things
  193. 6:11enough, but if you do that from the day
  194. 6:12you bring your puppy home, you'll have
  195. 6:15no problems whatsoever.
  196. 6:16Hey guys, if you're not already, you
  197. 6:18should be following our Fenrir Rescue
  198. 6:20Diaries over on Fenrir K9 Training
  199. 6:22channel. That is following my journey of
  200. 6:24working at a rescue center, helping dogs
  201. 6:27that have been abandoned, abused, given
  202. 6:29up, or found as strays, and helping
  203. 6:32implement behavior modification programs
  204. 6:34to allow them to become perfect canine
  205. 6:36companions that can be rehomed to their
  206. 6:38forever homes. So, if you're interested
  207. 6:40in following my journey of how I do
  208. 6:42that, there'll be a link to that channel
  209. 6:44down in the description box below.
  210. 6:46you'll really enjoy the journey, but
  211. 6:47I'll let you get back to the video you
  212. 6:48were just watching.
  213. 6:50Next, let's talk about boundaries.
  214. 6:51Again, this is something that you should
  215. 6:53be talking about with your family before
  216. 6:55you bring your new puppy home, long
  217. 6:57before you bring your new puppy home. If
  218. 6:59you haven't and you found yourself with
  219. 7:00a new puppy, it's not too late. Start
  220. 7:02putting boundaries in place now. Now,
  221. 7:04the thing with boundaries is that they
  222. 7:06are very subjective, and it's not
  223. 7:07something that I like to give black and
  224. 7:09white definitive answers on because
  225. 7:11different people want dogs for different
  226. 7:12reasons. Therefore, they'll have
  227. 7:14different rules, boundaries, and
  228. 7:15expectations. Now, for me, there is some
  229. 7:17mandatory things in terms of say
  230. 7:19obedience. We want to sit, stay, heel,
  231. 7:21down, recall. We want to be able to get
  232. 7:24a dog to sit, stay, and break around
  233. 7:25mealtimes. For me, that's mandatory. I
  234. 7:28think all dog owners should do that with
  235. 7:29their dogs. But, if you want to have
  236. 7:31your dog come up on the sofa, no problem
  237. 7:33whatsoever. If you want your dog to
  238. 7:35sleep with you on the bed, I don't
  239. 7:37overly recommend it, especially when
  240. 7:39they're young, but again, that's
  241. 7:40subjective. What I think you should do
  242. 7:43is put boundaries in place for
  243. 7:44absolutely everything that's good in
  244. 7:45that dog's life, including thresholds.
  245. 7:48Things that you might not deem to be
  246. 7:50highly rewarding for a dog, put a
  247. 7:52boundary in place to be able to stop
  248. 7:54them gaining free access to those
  249. 7:56things. What that looks like is if your
  250. 7:58dog wants its toys, brilliant. Don't
  251. 8:00give him free access to those toys.
  252. 8:02Remove the toys, put them in a basket,
  253. 8:03and put them up out the way. Now, when
  254. 8:05he gets access to those toys is when you
  255. 8:07decide, and ideally, as soon as they've
  256. 8:10got a sit, stay, and break command, you
  257. 8:12can put them into a sit, stay, put the
  258. 8:14toy down, and then break them and allow
  259. 8:16them to have it. If you want them to
  260. 8:17come up on the sofa, they have to sit,
  261. 8:18stay, and then welcome them up onto the
  262. 8:20sofa. Before you go out of a doorway to
  263. 8:23the great outdoors, sit, stay, calmly,
  264. 8:25patiently. Now, I'm going to move
  265. 8:27through the threshold and welcome you
  266. 8:29through it as well. Put boundaries in
  267. 8:30place. Have your dog look up to you for
  268. 8:32guidance and direction the second you
  269. 8:34bring it home, and you'll very quickly
  270. 8:36start to build that relationship. If you
  271. 8:39can make that habit, that is the key to
  272. 8:42being a high-level canine leader. You do
  273. 8:43these things without even thinking.
  274. 8:46You ask your dog to look up to you for
  275. 8:48guidance and direction without even
  276. 8:50thinking. That will build that
  277. 8:52relationship. That will build that
  278. 8:53leadership, and that's how you have a
  279. 8:54perfect canine companion.
  280. 8:56Which takes us onto my last point, which
  281. 8:58we've kind of touched on a little bit
  282. 9:00when I've been waffling in this little
  283. 9:02webinar, but that is about the
  284. 9:03importance of a sit, stay, and break. I
  285. 9:05think that that is something that you
  286. 9:06can start working on from the second you
  287. 9:08bring your dog home. Now, don't get me
  288. 9:10wrong, it's quite a complicated routine
  289. 9:12to have nailed, but it's definitely
  290. 9:14something that you can start working on.
  291. 9:16Talking about boundaries and the
  292. 9:17importance of manners, the importance of
  293. 9:19having a calm, relaxed dog that's a
  294. 9:20pleasure to be around, in my opinion,
  295. 9:23nothing is better for that
  296. 9:27that goal of having that perfect canine
  297. 9:29companion than a rock-solid sit, stay,
  298. 9:31and break. Now, a puppy, the day you
  299. 9:33bring it home, is capable of learning
  300. 9:35how to sit down. With a basic law mark
  301. 9:38reinforced base methodology, very fun,
  302. 9:40very positive, you can get them to sit.
  303. 9:42Once you can get a dog to sit, you can
  304. 9:43then layer up stay really nicely. Then
  305. 9:46you can start to layer up break.
  306. 9:48Teaching a dog to break can be quite
  307. 9:49complicated, but if you're starting that
  308. 9:51from day one, the quicker you can get it
  309. 9:53done, the quicker you can start putting
  310. 9:55that stick that sit stay break routine
  311. 9:58before food, before water, before toys,
  312. 10:00before access to furniture, before
  313. 10:02access to going outside, before access
  314. 10:04to play, before access to cuddles,
  315. 10:06before access to anything that it finds
  316. 10:08valuable in its life. If the dog knows
  317. 10:11all it has to do is sit down calmly with
  318. 10:14good manners and wait patiently while
  319. 10:16you ask it to, looking up to you for
  320. 10:18guidance and direction, and waiting
  321. 10:20until you give it permission, there is
  322. 10:21nothing better that you can do for your
  323. 10:23dog, and you can start that from day
  324. 10:25one. Like I say, you might not get there
  325. 10:27in day one, you won't get there in day
  326. 10:28one, but start from day one. Start as
  327. 10:31you mean to go on. Implement these
  328. 10:33things. Get your clients to start
  329. 10:34implementing this way of thinking, cuz
  330. 10:36it's all mindset. The what we do is the
  331. 10:39easy bit. Why we do it is what separates
  332. 10:42an okay dog owner from a world-class dog
  333. 10:44owner. Understand the mindset, and
  334. 10:46you'll be a world-class high-level
  335. 10:48canine leader with a perfect canine
  336. 10:49companion. So, I hope you enjoyed that
