- 0:00What teacher lost every ounce of respect
- 0:01in one class period? I was 10 questions
- 0:03into my chemistry final when the sensor
- 0:05on my arm started screaming. Not my
- 0:06phone, the little monitor that tracks my
- 0:07blood sugar. Type 1 diabetic since I was
- 0:096. The alarm meant I was dropping, and
- 0:11dropping fast. Mr. Halverson didn't look
- 0:13up from his crossword. Nothing on the
- 0:14desk during finals. That includes toys.
- 0:16It's a medical device, not a toy. My
- 0:17hands were already shaking. I need my
- 0:19juice. It's in my bag. Bags stay at the
- 0:20front. You knew the rules. 82. The
- 0:22number on my screen ticked down as I
- 0:23watched. Below 70 is dangerous. Below 55
- 0:25you start losing your mind. I raised my
- 0:27hand. Please, I have glucose tabs in the
- 0:28front pouch. 10 seconds. over, unzipped
- 0:30my bag, pulled out the tabs and the
- 0:31juice box, and locked them in his desk
- 0:33drawer. You can have these back when the
- 0:34exam is over. Diabetics love a good
- 0:35excuse. 71. My best friend Priya stood
- 0:37up. Are you serious? Just give it to
- 0:39him. Sit down, or I fail you both. Priya
- 0:40sat, fist clenched. The kid behind me,
- 0:42Elijah, the one who films everything for
- 0:44the yearbook channel, quietly turned his
- 0:45phone toward the front. I saw it.
- 0:46Halverson didn't. 64. My vision was
- 0:48softening at the edges. Sweat soaked
- 0:49through my shirt even though the room
- 0:50was freezing. I can't see the questions,
- 0:52I said, and my words came out slurred.
- 0:53Then you should have eaten breakfast, he
- 0:54said, not turning around. That's when
- 0:55the new girl, Sana, who never talked to
- 0:57anyone, stood up shaking. He gave me his
- 0:58tabs last semester when mine ran out. He
- 1:00didn't even know my name. He's not
- 1:01faking, sit down. 58. My pencil rolled
- 1:03off the desk and my fingers wouldn't
- 1:05close around it. The floor tilted.
- 1:06Someone behind me whispered that I'd
- 1:07gone gray. He's crashing, Priya said,
- 1:09louder now. Somebody get the nurse.
- 1:10Halverson walked to the door and planted
- 1:11himself in front of it, arms crossed. No
- 1:13one leaves during a state final. Walking
- 1:14out invalidates the exam for this entire
- 1:16class. Is that what you all want? 51. My
- 1:18heartbeat was slamming in my ears. I
- 1:19slid halfway out of my chair. That's
- 1:21when the boy in the back, Diego, the one
- 1:22everyone had written off, stood up. My
- 1:23grandma died like this, sugar, in a
- 1:25chair. Nobody helped her, either. His
- 1:26voice cracked. I'm not watching it
- 1:27twice. Diego, sit down, or or what? 44.
- 1:30The alarm changed pitch. Faster now, the
- 1:31sound right before something goes very
- 1:33wrong. My tongue felt too thick to move.
- 1:34I tried to say the drawer, the drawer,
- 1:36but nothing came out. Elijah stood all
- 1:37the way up, phone still recording, and
- 1:38said the thing that cracked the room
- 1:39open. I've got the last 4 minutes on
- 1:41video, every word. It's already
- 1:42uploading. Halverson spun around, his
- 1:43face draining white. Give me that phone,
- 1:45now. He lunged for Elijah, and that was
- 1:46when Diego reached the teacher's desk,
- 1:47grabbed the heavy stapler off the desk,
- 1:49and smashed the drawer open with a crack
- 1:50that echoed. Juice box, tabs. He threw
- 1:52them across the room to Priya. She was
- 1:53already on her knees beside me, tearing
- 1:54the foil, pushing three tabs past my
- 1:55lips, tilting the juice into my mouth.
- 1:57Chew, chew, come on, stay with me. 39,
- 1:58the lowest number my screen ever showed.
- 2:00The room narrowed to a tunnel. I chewed,
- 2:01I swallowed, and then I just waited to
- 2:03find out if it was enough. The door
- 2:04banged open. The front office aid had
- 2:05heard the alarms bleeding into the
- 2:06hallway. Behind her came the vice
- 2:07principal, and behind him a school
- 2:09resource officer who was already in the
- 2:10building. Elijah didn't say a word. He
- 2:11just lifted his phone and let it play.
- 2:12The whole room heard Halverson's own
- 2:14voice fill the air. Diabetics love a
- 2:15good excuse. Then, you should have eaten
- 2:16breakfast. Then the screaming alarm, my
- 2:18slurred begging, and the sound of him
- 2:19locking the drawer. The vice principal
- 2:21never even looked at his face. He just
- 2:22pointed one finger at the hallway. The
- 2:23officer took Halverson by the arm.
- 2:25Halverson started talking fast.
- 2:26Protocol, liability. I had no idea, but
- 2:28the video was still rolling, and every
- 2:29excuse he made was contradicted by his
- 2:30own voice 10 seconds earlier. They
- 2:32walked him out past 40 students, and not
- 2:33one of us made a sound. Priya was crying
- 2:35into my shoulder. Sana had my hand in
- 2:36both of hers. Diego stood there still
- 2:38gripping that stapler like he might need
- 2:39it again. My screen ticked up. 42, 51,
- 2:4163, rising. I could see the questions
- 2:43again. I could see all of it. The whole
- 2:45class on their feet around me. Every
- 2:46exam abandoned, every chair empty.
- 2:48Elijah finally stopped recording and
- 2:49crouched down next to me. "Are you
- 2:50okay?" he asked. I got my mouth to work
- 2:52one more time. He kept my sugar locked
- 2:5310 ft away and told me I was faking.
- 2:55Post every second of it.
