- 0:00What's the boldest thing you ever got
- 0:01away with at school? Everyone in my
- 0:02graduating class still swears they took
- 0:03a class with a kid named Miles Cooper.
- 0:05He was in three of our yearbooks, won a
- 0:06write-in vote for homecoming, and had a
- 0:08locker on the second floor. Miles never
- 0:09existed. I made him up on a dare, and by
- 0:11June the whole school was defending him
- 0:12to my face. It started with my friend
- 0:13Reese, who bet me 40 bucks I couldn't
- 0:15keep a lie going past homecoming. "One
- 0:16week," she said, dropping the bills on
- 0:18the cafeteria table like a challenge.
- 0:19"You'll crack." I told her I didn't want
- 0:21the 40. I wanted her to admit out loud
- 0:22in front of people that I was smarter
- 0:23than her. She laughed. "Deal. When you
- 0:25lose." Here's the thing nobody
- 0:26understands about a good lie. You don't
- 0:27build it, you let other people build it
- 0:29for you. I wasn't going to invent a
- 0:30student. I was going to make the school
- 0:31invent him and then remember doing it.
- 0:32So I picked the empty desk in the back
- 0:34of second period history, the one nobody
- 0:35sat in, and I started talking to it. Not
- 0:37loudly, just enough. "Miles, you get the
- 0:38notes?" I'd mumble, then answer myself
- 0:40under my breath. The first week one girl
- 0:41asked who I kept whispering to. "Miles.
- 0:43He's usually late." She nodded like that
- 0:44explained everything. It did. That's all
- 0:45people need, a name and a reason. Next I
- 0:47filled out a locker request form for him
- 0:48and slid it into the office tray between
- 0:50two real ones. Two days later, a locker
- 0:52on the second floor had a little printed
- 0:53tag, Cooper, M. I didn't even have to
- 0:55ask. I just put a lock on it and walked
- 0:56away. By October teachers were the
- 0:57problem, the good kind. Mr. Dorsey
- 0:59started marking a Miles C. present
- 1:01because his printed roster had a Miles
- 1:02on it. There was a real Miles who'd
- 1:03transferred in August, so the name was
- 1:05already floating in the system. I just
- 1:06borrowed the ghost. Whenever anyone
- 1:07said, "Which Miles?" I'd say, "Cooper,
- 1:09not the other one." And the confusion
- 1:10did my work for me. The legend grew on
- 1:11its own after that. People started
- 1:13remembering him. A guy in my grade swore
- 1:14Miles lent him a charger once. A girl
- 1:16insisted they'd done a lab together. Two
- 1:17juniors got into an actual argument
- 1:19about whether Miles played soccer or ran
- 1:20track. Neither. He didn't have legs. He
- 1:22didn't have anything. The best moment
- 1:23came at conferences. The counselor
- 1:25pulled my mom aside and said, "We're a
- 1:26little worried about Miles Cooper's
- 1:27attendance. Do you know him? He's in
- 1:28your kid's grade." My mom got bless her,
- 1:30said, "Oh, they're close." And squeezed
- 1:31my knee under the table so hard I almost
- 1:33yelled. In the car she made me explain
- 1:34the whole thing twice, then laughed
- 1:35until she had to pull into a gas
- 1:36station. Then people started trying to
- 1:38catch me. Reese led the charge. She'd
- 1:39text me, "Where's Miles RN?" during
- 1:41class, hoping I'd forget my own story. I
- 1:42never did. I had a whole schedule for
- 1:44him, study hall third period, a job at a
- 1:45movie theater two towns over, a
- 1:46girlfriend at another school so nobody
- 1:48could check. When Reese demanded to meet
- 1:49him, I said, "Sure." Then had Miles text
- 1:51her that he was shy. She screenshotted
- 1:52it and sent it to everyone. It only made
- 1:54him more real. In November he got
- 1:55nominated for a homecoming court spot. I
- 1:56didn't do that, students did on a paper
- 1:58ballot, writing in a boy who was made of
- 1:59an empty desk and other people's
- 2:00memories. He didn't win, but he got
- 2:02votes, real votes. I still have the
- 2:03tally. Spring is when it got dangerous.
- 2:05The yearbook committee emailed asking
- 2:06for Miles Cooper's senior photo. So, I
- 2:08found a blurry half-turned crowd shot
- 2:09from a pep rally, cropped it down to a
- 2:10stranger's shoulder and the back of a
- 2:12head, and submitted it as him. It ran on
- 2:13page 84. Camera shy, the caption said. I
- 2:16wrote that caption. By graduation, half
- 2:17the school was waiting to finally see
- 2:18Miles walk. I'd let it slip that he'd
- 2:20definitely be there. So, when the
- 2:21principal, Mr. Okafor, started reading
- 2:23names and got to the Cs, the whole
- 2:24senior section leaned forward. Miles
- 2:26Cooper, he called. Silence. He called it
- 2:27again. Nobody stood. A murmur went
- 2:29through the folding chairs. That's when
- 2:30I climbed onto my seat, held up Reese's
- 2:31crumpled 40 in one hand and the yearbook
- 2:33open to page 84 in the other, and said
- 2:34it loud enough for the whole field to
- 2:35hear, "Miles Cooper can't walk today. He
- 2:37was never real. You all invented him. I
- 2:39just held the door." For one full
- 2:40second, 400 people went completely
- 2:41silent. Then it broke. Kids screaming,
- 2:43teachers frozen, one guy yelling, "I
- 2:44lent him my charger." Reese stood up two
- 2:46rows over, shook her head, and started
- 2:47clapping before anyone else did. Mr.
- 2:49Okafor looked down at his list, then up
- 2:50at me, and said into the live
- 2:51microphone, "Cooper, see me after." I
- 2:53never did.
