What’s in My Architectural Drawing Set? | Building Permit Fast Breakdown — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Hey everyone, I'm David and I'm a
- 0:02US-based architect. Today I'll walk you
- 0:04through one of my real life projects to
- 0:06show you what's in my architectural
- 0:08drawing set, building permit edition.
- 0:10This tutorial is for architects and
- 0:12aspiring architects who want to improve
- 0:14the clarity, completeness, and
- 0:15professionalism of their permit sets.
- 0:17While permitting requirements may vary
- 0:19by city and country, I'll show you a
- 0:21great foundation that you can build on.
- 0:23I created this permit package using
- 0:25Round Design, the fastest way I've found
- 0:27to produce architectural drawings. I've
- 0:29actually been using Round for a few
- 0:31years now instead of AutoCAD for this
- 0:33type of work. To follow along, create a
- 0:35free account and use a template linked
- 0:37in the description. So, first off, what
- 0:39exactly is a building permit? Simply
- 0:41put, it's your local authorities's
- 0:42formal approval to begin construction.
- 0:45Whether you're renovating a bathroom or
- 0:47building a multi-unit, you'll need to
- 0:48show that your design meets zoning laws,
- 0:50safety codes, and building regulations.
- 0:53Every city and country has different
- 0:55rules, which is why I always start each
- 0:57project by reviewing the municipality's
- 0:59published checklist. They often spell
- 1:01out exactly what drawings are required
- 1:03and in what format. So, for this
- 1:05project, it's relatively minor uh
- 1:08renovation project. And so if I zoom in
- 1:10on our existing floor plans,
- 1:13um, and then compare these to our
- 1:15propose, um, you can see down here at
- 1:18the basement, this is really just an
- 1:19unfinished garage space. Um, and then at
- 1:22the kind of main level, um, we've got a
- 1:26kitchen renovation. Um, and then we're
- 1:28actually going to demo out the whole
- 1:29deck. Um, with the goal being that we're
- 1:31basically going to add on, um, finished
- 1:34space underneath the existing deck. And
- 1:36so the easiest way to do that is just
- 1:38rebuild the deck. Um and then some
- 1:39pretty minor uh bathroom renovations
- 1:42upstairs. Um they really want to
- 1:45separate this out uh to have a kids
- 1:47bathroom here and then a primary
- 1:49bathroom and closet in the uh primary
- 1:52bedroom space. Um this is a relatively
- 1:55young family. They've got two young
- 1:56kids. Um and so they're just looking as
- 1:59they expand, they're going to need a
- 2:01little bit more space uh as their family
- 2:03grows. Um, and so here with the, uh,
- 2:05proposed plans, you can see down here,
- 2:08um, we've, you know, gone through and
- 2:10done this, uh, hatch to show new build
- 2:14walls, um, for new construction. And so,
- 2:17um, you know, as we looked at before,
- 2:19this was all unfinished space. Um, but
- 2:23this is now we're adding a bathroom,
- 2:25some storage, um, some laundry under the
- 2:28stairs. Um, and then two bedrooms here.
- 2:32Um, and then these stairs are connecting
- 2:35up here um to the dining room um where
- 2:39we're doing this new kitchen and we're
- 2:41opening up this wall um so that the
- 2:43kitchen and the dining room flow better
- 2:45together. Um a little office space uh
- 2:48where there was already existing
- 2:50um and then here at the uh upstairs
- 2:55we're basically adding this bathroom,
- 2:58shrinking the existing bathroom and then
- 3:00adding that closet. So where this was
- 3:02kind of this al cove space in the
- 3:04existing uh we're basically adding the
- 3:06bathroom and uh and closet. Um and
- 3:12let's see. So if I go over to our
- 3:14elevations as well, again pretty minor,
- 3:17but you can see we've got this deck um
- 3:21and this stair coming up to the deck.
- 3:23Um, and basically what we're trying to
- 3:25do is, you know, add a bedroom directly
- 3:28under the deck and then add a bedroom
- 3:29back here that's, you know, would be
- 3:32hidden by these stairs. And so we need
- 3:34that window to have access to the
- 3:36backyard and all that. So that's really
- 3:38driving some of these changes. And so
- 3:41um, we're switching to, um, a spiral
- 3:44stair off the new deck. Um, deck is
- 3:47basically sitting on top of this new
- 3:49bedroom. And then here's that window,
- 3:51uh, to that second new bedroom as well.
- 3:55And you can kind of see here in the side
- 3:57elevations as well. This is all now
- 4:00solid.
- 4:01Um, and I've really gone through and um,
- 4:04you know, I've done the sections here as
- 4:05well. Um, so you can kind of see the the
- 4:08stairs coming back up to the next level.
- 4:10Um, all of our storage spaces and
- 4:12laundry. Um, all right. So, depending on
- 4:16the size of your project, you might be
- 4:18able to get away with just a single
- 4:20cover sheet. Um, but for me, I wind up
- 4:22uh for slightly larger projects, I wind
- 4:25up with two title sheets. So, um, I'll
- 4:27start with one with a sheet index. I
- 4:29know that this is going to grow as we
- 4:31move through permitting and then our
- 4:33construction document set. Um, and so
- 4:35I'm kind of leaving some space up there.
- 4:38Um, and then here's really my title
- 4:39sheet. So, I've got project data with
- 4:42all of this, you know, zoning
- 4:43information, project scope, um, parking,
- 4:46and here in California, in San
- 4:48Francisco, they require this bicycle
- 4:50parking, and so it's a little
- 4:51ridiculous, but, um, you know, then we
- 4:53do this unit breakdown, um, floor area,
- 4:56which I've, uh, calculated all of this
- 4:59through Rayon. Um, and then there's
- 5:01some, you know, uh, roof information,
- 5:04uh, building height, um, site
- 5:06information, and all of that. Um, and
- 5:09then here we've got a vicinity map,
- 5:11which I basically just uh took a
- 5:13screenshot from Apple Maps. You know,
- 5:15you can do it with Google Maps as well.
- 5:17Um, and I just imported that into Rayon.
- 5:19And the way you do that is just simply
- 5:21um import image and then you can just
- 5:23pull from your desktop, your file
- 5:25manager, whatever. Or just a simple drag
- 5:28and drop. And a couple other things
- 5:30while we're here that I wanted to talk
- 5:32about. So, first I like to just lay out
- 5:35all of my uh all of my sheets in one
- 5:38paper canvas. Um so this way I can see
- 5:41everything. I can make sure that the
- 5:43graphics are aligned and that you know
- 5:46everything is working well together and
- 5:47I can just easily copy things from one
- 5:49page to another. Um and I also just I
- 5:52like to organize in columns. Um so I've
- 5:54got you know my kind of title sheets
- 5:57here on the left. And as I start to
- 6:00develop this permit set, uh we'll start
- 6:02to add more sheets here for title 24
- 6:05energy calculations, uh green building
- 6:08forms, and all of that sort of project
- 6:10data that's required that will be at the
- 6:12front of the set. Um and then I've got
- 6:15my uh I've got my next column for floor
- 6:18plans. So from site plans to existing
- 6:20and proposed floor plans and roof plans.
- 6:23Um and then to kind of the building
- 6:25elevations. So uh you know prop uh
- 6:28existing exterior elevations, proposed
- 6:31exterior elevations. Um and then here
- 6:34you know San Francisco requires some
- 6:37photographs and some really basic 3D
- 6:39modeling just to show kind of the
- 6:41massing of the building. Um if the
- 6:43massing is changing at all. Um and then
- 6:45building sections, door window uh uh
- 6:48schedule and then window details. And so
- 6:51I've really gone through and organized
- 6:53this way. Um, and it just makes things
- 6:55really easy. Um, and so this, you know,
- 6:58what what we're looking at right now,
- 7:00um, this was all what was required for a
- 7:02planning submitt. Um, and so right now
- 7:05I'm working on the permit set. Um, and
- 7:08so we can kind of walk through like how
- 7:10some of that is developed. Um, but one
- 7:12thing I did want to look at also is uh
- 7:15for the uh the title blocks. Um, so I've
- 7:19gone ahead and made my own title blocks.
- 7:21I've designed it all in rayon. Um, and
- 7:24you can see as it's as it's highlighting
- 7:26it as purple. Um, this is a block that
- 7:29I've created. And so any changes that I
- 7:31make to this title block is going to
- 7:33track through to the others. So, you
- 7:35know, say I go in here and maybe I just
- 7:38want to call this project. Um, I can go
- 7:40ahead and make that change and that's
- 7:43going to track through all the other
- 7:44ones. Um the one or the two elements
- 7:47that I have not brought into the block
- 7:49are the uh sheet title and the sheet
- 7:52number. And obviously those want to be
- 7:55unique and so I'm keeping those
- 7:56separate. Um but one thing that I have
- 7:59brought in is uh these issued drawing
- 8:02sets. And so I can easily you know
- 8:04create a new one. Um and I'll call this
- 8:08obviously six. And maybe this will be
- 8:11our permit set.
- 8:15Um, and then I'll give this, you know,
- 8:18depending on when you're watching this,
- 8:19I'll give this today's date.
- 8:22All right. And there, that should have
- 8:26tracked through all of these. Um, and
- 8:30you know, we're not there yet, but when
- 8:32I am ready, I can also then just slide
- 8:35my stamp back over. And I know I did 4
- 8:38in away.
- 8:40And now my stamp is on every sheet um
- 8:44just the way I need it to be.
- 8:47All right. And as we're talking about,
- 8:49you know, um here on the this left
- 8:51column, we're going to need to add a
- 8:53couple more sheets uh for title 24
- 8:56energy calculations. Um and that's just
- 8:58a PDF that I was sent by the consultant
- 9:01by the mechanical engineer that I need
- 9:03to slip into the drawing set. So, um,
- 9:06what I'll do first is I'll copy the
- 9:09page.
- 9:11And so I'll just bring that down. And it
- 9:14looks like this correctly gave me that
- 9:16page three. Um, and then I also want to
- 9:19copy my title block um, along with the
- 9:24sheet name and the sheet number. Um, and
- 9:27I'm going to call this title 24. And
- 9:31maybe I'll make this just uh actually
- 9:34this is going to be a T
- 9:371.1 we'll call it.
- 9:41All right. Um and then the next thing we
- 9:43want to do is we want to import that
- 9:44PDF. So I'll go up to the menu, import
- 9:48PDF, and I've got this sample title 24.
- 9:52Um and so we're going to be limited to
- 9:5510 pages per import. Um, but also I know
- 9:58that I'm not going to fit all 13 pages
- 10:01onto one sheet. And so I'm just going to
- 10:04go ahead and, you know, I've already
- 10:06done this. So I know that I'm going to
- 10:07do five on one sheet. So I'll just
- 10:10select those first five and then for the
- 10:12next sheet I can bring in the next five.
- 10:13But um, so first, you know, you can do
- 10:17uh you can import as either a vector or
- 10:20with images. Um, and so vector would be
- 10:23useful if this was like a floor plan
- 10:24that I had from asbuilt services or from
- 10:26a survey or something like that where I
- 10:29wanted to, you know, be able to measure
- 10:31or snap to different elements in the
- 10:33drawing. Um, for this because this is
- 10:36just sheets that I want to show, I'm
- 10:38going to bring this in as images and
- 10:39that's just going to be a lighter
- 10:40weight, you know, easier, more
- 10:41manageable um, process. And you'll
- 10:44notice that this actually as it's
- 10:46importing it, it created or opened up a
- 10:49new tab. Um, and now it's going to ask
- 10:52me for
- 10:54uh sizing and scaling. And so I'll do
- 10:57here I know that this is a 8 1/2 by 11
- 11:00sheet of paper. But just to to make it
- 11:03fit, and it doesn't need to be a scale,
- 11:05I'm going to do 10 in and set that to
- 11:09inches. Um, alternatively, if this was a
- 11:11drawing, I could easily just set the
- 11:13scale.
- 11:15All right. And then it's going to ask me
- 11:17to set an insertion point. And I'm going
- 11:20to go ahead and close that out because I
- 11:21don't need to show or give any feedback.
- 11:25And
- 11:27then I can go ahead and start to
- 11:30lay this out. All right. So,
- 11:35so I'm going to want to center this on
- 11:37that title block. That looks good to me.
- 11:40And maybe I'll move it like, you know,
- 11:43half inch off.
- 11:46And just to give it a little bit more of
- 11:48kind of a graphic pop, um, I'm going to
- 11:51select all of those and I'm going to add
- 11:53a stroke. And that looks fine to me. So
- 11:57there, you know, the sheets are
- 11:58separated. All looks good. And I can go
- 12:00ahead and repeat that for however many,
- 12:03you know, sheets I need for this title
- 12:0524.
- 12:07All right. All right. So, why don't we
- 12:08take a look at how to actually create a
- 12:10drawing in Rayon. So, I'm going to start
- 12:12with the site plans. So, I'll go over
- 12:14here to my canvases. Um, and I'll click
- 12:18over to site plans. Um, and so you'll
- 12:21notice here I've got uh my kind of
- 12:23working drawings here. Um, and then I've
- 12:26actually brought in the CAD file from uh
- 12:29our site surveyor. And so, he went in,
- 12:32did a survey um and then shared um a
- 12:35couple of CAD files. And so, um, I
- 12:38actually didn't bring this in directly
- 12:40to this, uh, working canvas. What I did
- 12:44is, um, I brought this in, um, to a
- 12:47separate canvas. And the reason for
- 12:49that, which anyone who's, you know,
- 12:51worked with consultants before knows,
- 12:53um, that you wind up with just kind of a
- 12:55mess of layers. Um, which is one thing,
- 12:57one thing that's really nice about Round
- 12:59is that it kind of drops it all into
- 13:00this import layer. Um, so it hides that
- 13:03mess, but I just wanted to start clean.
- 13:06um with my site plans canvas. So what I
- 13:09did is um I created this view. Um so
- 13:13this is really just a view into the site
- 13:15survey canvas. Um and I've got this to
- 13:19full scale and I can set my guidelines
- 13:22to make sure, you know, that everything
- 13:24is aligned. Um and I can then, you know,
- 13:30as I start to develop these drawings, um
- 13:33I can do this in a couple of different
- 13:34ways. Um, and I'm just going to set our
- 13:38scale correct, our stroke scale correct.
- 13:40Um, so first, because I'm just basically
- 13:44creating these these footprints of the
- 13:47buildings, um, there's two ways I could
- 13:50do this. So, um, I'm going to start with
- 13:53a polyline
- 13:55and I'm going to pick a style. So, it's
- 13:59matching that.
- 14:01Now I can zoom in here and I might not
- 14:05be able to do this super easily because
- 14:07of the line weight. And so what I'm
- 14:09actually going to do, um, I'm going to
- 14:11turn this dark and I'm going to turn on
- 14:13wireframe. And this is going to allow me
- 14:16to actually see, you know, where these
- 14:19lines are. Um, so now I can go back to
- 14:21my polyline tool and I can actually, you
- 14:26know, have some certainty that I am
- 14:28snapping to the right lines.
- 14:34All right. Um, and actually
- 14:39maybe this one will carry all the way
- 14:41across.
- 14:43Of course, is a little messy, but you
- 14:45know, that's what you get working with
- 14:46consultants.
- 14:50Um, so it might not be perfect because
- 14:52of the quality of the drawing that came
- 14:54in, but that's okay.
- 14:57Um, and as you're doing poly lines, as
- 15:01you're drawing poly lines with, um, an
- 15:03outline and a fill, um, one thing that
- 15:06you'll notice is if you do not complete
- 15:10the the shape, it'll still show the
- 15:12fill, but it won't show the line, um,
- 15:14you know, that you're uh that you're
- 15:17drawing. So, if I go ahead and turn off
- 15:21wireframe and uh I'll also turn this
- 15:25back to light mode. So, now you can see
- 15:27we've got uh we've got this shape here.
- 15:30Um, and the other way that I could have
- 15:32created this is just by simple
- 15:35rectangles. Um, so I'll just go ahead
- 15:38and trace over this one that I just
- 15:40created. Um,
- 15:44and here's where we might run into some
- 15:47of these, you know, messy
- 15:50angles. But,
- 15:52um, I can go ahead and create all of
- 15:54these and make sure that that is lined
- 15:56up.
- 15:58And, and so now what I'll go ahead and
- 16:00do is I'll select all those shapes. And
- 16:03then I'll go into our editing tools and
- 16:05I'll select boolean. And it looks like
- 16:08we're good with the union. And there we
- 16:10go. So it just automatically uh creates
- 16:13that as one shape.
- 16:16All right. So now that we've got kind of
- 16:18um you know the outline of our building
- 16:21um and I'll actually just move this
- 16:24over here or actually you know we can
- 16:26just start with what I already had
- 16:28drawn. Um so now that we've got this
- 16:31drawn then we can start to develop our
- 16:32floor plan. So I'll go over to
- 16:36uh just our new floor plans. And the
- 16:39first thing that I want to do is I want
- 16:41to create a view. Um, so I'll create a
- 16:44view. Um, and then I'm going to make
- 16:47this I'm going to link this over to our
- 16:50site plans. All right. Um, and I'm going
- 16:53to keep this proposed one
- 16:57is basically what this is going to do.
- 16:58It's going to give me just a window into
- 17:02um into that canvas. All right. And
- 17:05maybe I want to turn off some of these,
- 17:07you know, site annotation.
- 17:09Um, yeah, I think that's fine. Um, and
- 17:14then what I can start to do is I can go
- 17:16to our walls tool and just start to
- 17:22um, and actually that's a good point.
- 17:24You can see um, here I was initially
- 17:26wanting to go this way, but it's
- 17:28showing, you know, the reference line
- 17:30opposite what I want. So I can easily
- 17:32just change that. Um, and I can change
- 17:34that after the fact as well.
- 17:42All right. Um,
- 17:48and then say, you know, maybe I've got
- 17:51um a thinner wall that's coming across
- 17:54here. So, um, I'm going to go to, you
- 17:57know, 2x4 interior.
- 18:00And again, maybe I'll swap that out to
- 18:03be that side.
- 18:08And I'll just move this
- 18:11so that that's properly aligned. And
- 18:14maybe I want to say that this is a new
- 18:15wall. Um, so what I can do is actually I
- 18:17can detach that style. I can go in here
- 18:21and I can add a hatch.
- 18:25So I'll just do this oblique hatch. And
- 18:27maybe, you know, maybe I think that that
- 18:30is uh too spaced out. Um so I can go in
- 18:34here and maybe I want to do this half
- 18:37scale. Um and maybe this is too bold. So
- 18:42I'll go ahead and find a gray that looks
- 18:45good.
- 18:47All right. And then if I if I think that
- 18:49this looks good to me, then I can
- 18:51actually go ahead and save this as a
- 18:52style. Um, so I can say, you know, new
- 18:562x4.
- 18:58Um, and so there we've got, you know,
- 19:01our new wall type.
- 19:04Um, and so that's where it when I go
- 19:06back to our plot sheets, we can see, you
- 19:09know, that I've diagrammed out these,
- 19:11you know, demo areas. But then for our
- 19:13new floor plans, this is where, you
- 19:16know, I've I've got these hatched walls
- 19:18showing. Um, and that's all really easy
- 19:21to do. I actually added these after or
- 19:23not added but um you know I just I drew
- 19:26the floor plans and then um late in the
- 19:29process when I needed to um actually
- 19:31differentiate between the two um it was
- 19:34super easy to go through and just make
- 19:36all these um you know add that hatch to
- 19:39all these all these walls.
- 19:42And one thing that you'll have to deal
- 19:44with on every project is uh identifying
- 19:47the existing conditions and where any
- 19:49new construction might be occurring. So
- 19:52um here depending on you know how you
- 19:54generate your existing plans um you know
- 19:57whether that's uh going through a
- 19:59service that that goes and scans it for
- 20:01you and provides you with the DWG uh or
- 20:03if you go and hand measure or like me if
- 20:06you use kind of like a you know um a LAR
- 20:09app on your iPad or something like that
- 20:11that goes and helps you to generate a 3D
- 20:13model and measure off of it. Um so I
- 20:16developed these floor plans myself the
- 20:18existing plans. Um, and then in Rayon, I
- 20:21was able to really easily go through and
- 20:24identify what areas are being
- 20:25demolished. And so I basically just put
- 20:28this transparent um, red shade over it
- 20:33and I created my own style. Um, and so
- 20:36it's all, you know, really easy to do.
- 20:38So I did this at a 20% opacity. Um, so
- 20:42really transparent but really clear. Um,
- 20:44and that's where, you know, like AutoCAD
- 20:46is very black and white. it's it's kind
- 20:48of hard to bring color in, but Rayon has
- 20:50made it really easy. You just, you know,
- 20:52can really easy start easily start to
- 20:54generate these these diagrams. Um, and
- 20:58then, you know, for new walls, um, here,
- 21:00if I go down to kind of the garage
- 21:02level, um, I've just added a hatch to
- 21:05all of these walls to show what is a new
- 21:07wall, um, and how to really showcase
- 21:10between those two.
- 21:12All right. And the next thing I want to
- 21:14talk about is site plans. So um every
- 21:17project requires a site plan. Um some
- 21:20projects depending on the scale and the
- 21:22scope of the project may require uh a
- 21:24survey from a licensed surveyor. Um this
- 21:27project did um and so I actually
- 21:30generated these site plans based on um
- 21:33on his survey and um he sent me a both a
- 21:39PDF and a DWG file. And so, um, the PDF
- 21:42was a full-size 24x 36 in sheet. Um, and
- 21:46so I'm showing that here in the sheet
- 21:48index, but I'm not actually showing it
- 21:49in my, uh, plot sheets in rayon. It was
- 21:53just something that I slipped into the
- 21:54PDF file after I exported. Um, but I did
- 21:58use the DWG file to uh, generate these
- 22:03uh, site plans. And so the way I like to
- 22:05do that is I like to just create a
- 22:08separate canvas so I can keep everything
- 22:10clean. Um especially with imported
- 22:12files, you never know like all the
- 22:14layers and kind of messiness. So um this
- 22:18is the result or the end result. This
- 22:20was um I basically went through and
- 22:21cleaned it up. But um the way you do
- 22:24this is you go to menu, import DWG, and
- 22:27you'll find that file.
- 22:31Um, and I'm not going to bother with
- 22:33scaling it here. Um, I'm just going to
- 22:35bring it in and deal with it, uh, in
- 22:39here. All right. Um, so now I've got
- 22:42this here clearly to the completely
- 22:44wrong size, uh, wrong scale, but I know
- 22:49that
- 22:51these lots are 25 ft wide. So, I'm just
- 22:55going to scale it to 25 ft.
- 22:58And I'm actually going to group this so
- 23:01it doesn't get too messy. And um then
- 23:04what I usually do is when I go over to
- 23:07my kind of working canvas
- 23:09um then you know I've made a view um
- 23:13into that uh site survey. And so I can
- 23:17actually just go ahead and you know you
- 23:20just create a view uh change this to
- 23:24site survey. Um, and then, you know, you
- 23:27can set this to the right scale.
- 23:30Um,
- 23:32rotate it around. And so it's really
- 23:35easy to just bring all of this in. And
- 23:38this way I'm not bringing in all the
- 23:40crazy layers and everything that could
- 23:42be um, you know, messing me up and
- 23:45causing me trouble and headaches. Um,
- 23:48but I have all the information available
- 23:50here. And what I also do did is um I
- 23:52took just a screenshot from maps um so I
- 23:56can really easily kind of go back and
- 23:58forth and reference things um as I
- 24:00started to develop these uh these site
- 24:03plans.
- 24:05So why don't we go ahead and take a look
- 24:06at how to generate these proposed floor
- 24:09plans. So I'll go ahead and I'll open up
- 24:12my new floor plans canvas. Um, and this
- 24:16is basically the way I like to set it
- 24:19up, um, is just each floor is sequential
- 24:22in order. So, I've got my garage level,
- 24:25first floor, second floor, roof plan.
- 24:28Um, and then just to help me with the
- 24:29drafting, I've brought in a view of my
- 24:32exterior front facade. Um, and I've
- 24:35brought in views of each floor, um, from
- 24:38the existing floor plan. Um, and so if I
- 24:41go down here to the garage, um, I've
- 24:45gone and I've added, you know, this
- 24:47hatch to all my proposed walls. And so
- 24:50this is all really easy to do. Um, and
- 24:53you know, so I can just go in here and
- 24:56with the hatch or if I want this to just
- 24:58be a solid white, uh, whatever that
- 25:00needs to be. And I'm going to go ahead
- 25:01and keep that hatch there. Um, but I can
- 25:04also, you know, I can go ahead and I can
- 25:07change this to, um, a thinner wall. Um,
- 25:11maybe I feel like that line weight isn't
- 25:14right, so I'm going to thicken that up a
- 25:16little bit. Um, so it's really easy to
- 25:18go through and start to customize
- 25:19things. Um, you know, and
- 25:23to do all of this, it's all just, you
- 25:25know, you use the wall tool. Um, and you
- 25:28start to block out these spaces, you
- 25:31know. Um, and
- 25:34then I can go and, uh, maybe that's a
- 25:37new wall, so I'll just pick a style and
- 25:41match that. Um, so all super easy to put
- 25:44together. Um, the other thing you'll
- 25:46notice, I've really gone through and
- 25:47populated this with with furniture and
- 25:50fixtures and cars and all this stuff.
- 25:53Um, and that's all really easy to do
- 25:55just with Rayon's block library. Um, so
- 25:59Rayon's provided thousands of blocks.
- 26:01It's all really easy to put to just drag
- 26:04and drop in. Um, so let me take a look.
- 26:06Uh, I'll just look for beds.
- 26:10Um, and let's see if I can find this one
- 26:12that I was using cuz I like it. Um, so
- 26:16here's the one that I was looking for.
- 26:18Um, and so I can just drag that in. Um,
- 26:22and it's all super easy. Um,
- 26:26and say, you know, I wanted to do the uh
- 26:29the elevations as well or to show this
- 26:31in a section. Um, there's a couple ways
- 26:33I could do this, but Round provides uh
- 26:36three views of all of the blocks that
- 26:38they've provided. So, if I click on the
- 26:40family of that block, it's going to show
- 26:43me the other views uh that I don't
- 26:45necessarily have included here. So, um I
- 26:48can easily just drag and drop that front
- 26:51elevation. Um and I I could do the same
- 26:54with the side elevation, but instead
- 26:56what I'm going to do just to show you
- 26:57another way, I'm going to copy that
- 26:59down. And then if I go over to the
- 27:01properties
- 27:03here, I can see all the different
- 27:05instances, all the different versions of
- 27:06that block. and I can go ahead and and
- 27:09switch that to the side elevation. So
- 27:11once I have a floor plan, it's it's
- 27:14really easy to then go and start to draw
- 27:16sections, elevations, and all of that.
- 27:19Um,
- 27:21and I've also had to include some notes,
- 27:23you know, for uh, you know, toers, uh,
- 27:26which seemed ridiculous, but they
- 27:28actually asked me for the sizes of the
- 27:31trash and recycling bins. And so um, I
- 27:33was able to provide that just with this
- 27:35leader. Um, and you know, I can easily
- 27:38just copy that around. Um, and I've
- 27:41saved this as a style, but maybe I want
- 27:43to detach that. Um, and then I have full
- 27:46customizability. And again, this is
- 27:48where you can really start to show color
- 27:50um, to make different elements in your
- 27:52drawings pop. So, if I want, I can
- 27:54change the text to red. I can change the
- 27:57line to red. Um, I can make this uh, you
- 28:02know, a solid
- 28:04um, a solid arrow. I can make it bigger.
- 28:07So maybe I want to make this massive.
- 28:10Um, and I can really go through and, you
- 28:12know, since that's not how how I like to
- 28:14do it, I'll just go and show you on this
- 28:16one. But, um, you know, you can change
- 28:18sort of how your, uh, leader line curves
- 28:21in or, um, you know, maybe you want it
- 28:24to be straight. Um, so you really have a
- 28:27lot of customizability um, with all of
- 28:29these elements.
- 28:32All right. And another thing that you
- 28:34might be required to include is some
- 28:36diagrams. And so I was recently asked to
- 28:39include um you know identifying the
- 28:42different uh different units with an ADU
- 28:45and also identifying a path of travel
- 28:47for a fire ladder. Um and so it's really
- 28:51easy to kind of show this sort of thing.
- 28:53And so I'm going to go ahead and uh I'll
- 28:56just copy the ground floor on this one.
- 29:01um or the ground level. And I can go in
- 29:04and I can open up this view. And maybe I
- 29:09want to start to turn off some of these
- 29:12annotations. I don't need to see the
- 29:14tags. Uh
- 29:18furniture can turn off. Uh maybe I'll
- 29:20leave the fixtures. Um but so I can
- 29:23really go and clean this up so that I'm
- 29:25not seeing all that information that I
- 29:27that I did need to see on the floor
- 29:29plan. Um, and then from here I can go
- 29:32and maybe I'll do a polyline. Um, and
- 29:38I'm just going to start to trace along
- 29:41here.
- 29:43And I know I added that kind of weird
- 29:45bump out, but I'm just going to ignore
- 29:46it for now.
- 29:48Um,
- 29:57and so I'll just go ahead and trace
- 29:58along. And maybe I'll be maybe I'm being
- 30:01a little sloppy, but that's okay. All
- 30:03right. Um, so now I've got my polyline,
- 30:05and I want to really make this stand
- 30:08out. So I'm going to make it super
- 30:10thick. Uh, is 24 thick enough? No, maybe
- 30:14not. Um, oh, that didn't even go.
- 30:19Yeah, maybe 36.
- 30:22Um, and then I'll add
- 30:26a dash.
- 30:31And maybe this wants to be like 1.5
- 30:34times.
- 30:37And I'll make a little little thicker
- 30:40actually. 48.
- 30:42Um,
- 30:44and I'll change that dash again. Just
- 30:46seems a little wrong.
- 30:48Um, but yeah, so you can really easily
- 30:51start to identify like, hey, here's kind
- 30:53of the living condition space. Um, maybe
- 30:56I even want to add a fill. Um, and I'll
- 30:59make it red. And I'll similar to what
- 31:02we're looking at before, I'll make this
- 31:03like 20%. Um, so it's really easy to
- 31:06just start to diagram things out. Show
- 31:09that this is condition space. show, you
- 31:11know, um, direction of travel for a fire
- 31:15escape, whatever you need to show.
- 31:18And the next thing I want to talk about
- 31:20is exterior elevations and building
- 31:22sections. So, this can be kind of the
- 31:24fun part. Like, we all went to
- 31:26architecture school and for me, you
- 31:28know, uh, we learned through waterc
- 31:30coloring and rendering. And so I really
- 31:32enjoy that kind of aspect of of using
- 31:34rayon that it kind of brings me back to
- 31:37a little more of that waterc coloring um
- 31:39kind of element. And so why don't we go
- 31:41ahead and I'll open up my new exterior
- 31:44elevations. And so similar to what we're
- 31:47looking at with the floor plans. Um I've
- 31:49kind of set this up with views. And so
- 31:51um you know I've got uh a view of each
- 31:55level of each floor plan. Um, and I can
- 31:58really easily, you know, I can just do
- 32:00guidelines uh to kind of help me, you
- 32:04know, identify where all these things
- 32:05are. Um, and kind of, you know, do that
- 32:08as I draw. Um, but also, you know, I was
- 32:12able to to do some textures and colors.
- 32:14And so, you know, if I select kind of
- 32:17the main uh the main building, um, I've
- 32:21I've got this exterior plaster style
- 32:23that I saved. Um, and this is basically
- 32:26I chose a fill uh for this cement. Um,
- 32:30and then I went ahead and I started to,
- 32:33you know, make some adjustments just to
- 32:36give this a little bit more of that
- 32:38existing color. Um, and I know, you
- 32:42know, we're looking at my new ones, but
- 32:43if I go over to the existing, this is
- 32:45where I actually generated it. Um, and
- 32:47so it's got kind of this purple hue to
- 32:50it. Um, and I didn't want to go so
- 32:52extreme and make it like super bold and
- 32:54purple here. Um, but I was basically
- 32:56just trying to match that kind of
- 32:58aesthetic. Um,
- 33:01and then, you know, you can really make
- 33:03this your own. I've added shadows. You
- 33:05don't necessarily need to, um, but I
- 33:07find it helps to kind of make it pop.
- 33:09Um, also if I if I open this this group
- 33:12for the window, um, I've got my my
- 33:16window color, but then I've also gone
- 33:18and added this kind of um, glare to it.
- 33:21Um, so it just adds a little bit of
- 33:23depth to that uh, to this drawing. Um,
- 33:25and I've got, you know, the shadows
- 33:27brought in here. Um, and gone through
- 33:30and added as much detail as I could. Um,
- 33:33and so this is really where it can be
- 33:34kind of fun. you know, this is this is
- 33:36why we all studied architecture, why we
- 33:38enjoy what we do. Um, and then, you
- 33:41know, also some of the things that you
- 33:43just have to have is all of these um,
- 33:46you know, floor datms, uh, you know,
- 33:49height off the curb and all of that. Um,
- 33:52you know, we're required to show the
- 33:55neighboring structures for context. Um,
- 33:58you know, both in that front elevation
- 34:00and then also just dashed in the side
- 34:02elevation. Um, so I'm even showing like,
- 34:05you know, the neighbor setback uh and
- 34:07the neighbor uh light wells, that kind
- 34:09of thing. Um, so all this stuff that
- 34:11just needs to be shown. Um, and all of
- 34:14this I was able to uh to draft within
- 34:17Rayon itself. Um, and then also if I go
- 34:20over to the building sections, very much
- 34:22the same. I went through uh and created
- 34:25these views. Um, and I'm showing just my
- 34:28cut lines.
- 34:30Um, and then I was able to just go
- 34:32through and start to piece these
- 34:34together. And the next phase of this
- 34:35project, I'll start to really beef up
- 34:37the interiors. Um, and kind of go
- 34:39through that process. Um, and so then
- 34:41I'll start to show a little bit more
- 34:42detail through here. Um, but for now,
- 34:45this this works for a building section.
- 34:47It gets um, what we need for permitting.
- 34:52And one thing that's often required on
- 34:54projects is just existing photos. Um,
- 34:56and so, you know, I was able to just
- 34:59include these. Um, some of them I might
- 35:02have taken myself, some I might have
- 35:03pulled from Red Fin or Zillow or
- 35:05something like that. Um, but a lot of
- 35:08times it's required and it's just super
- 35:10easy. So, um, you know, compared to
- 35:13AutoCAD where you might have to like,
- 35:15uh, put it in a folder and then XREF to
- 35:17that folder and then you can't touch it
- 35:18or rename anything or else it's going to
- 35:21break that path. Um, this is all super
- 35:24simple. So, you could um you know, one
- 35:26you could just drag and drop uh or you
- 35:29can just go up to the menu, import
- 35:32image. Um and I'll just bring this
- 35:35interior photo in. And it just drops it
- 35:38right there. Super easy. Um and then I'm
- 35:40going to go ahead and align this uh with
- 35:45these other photos. Um and I'll just
- 35:48bring it in to that set. Um so there
- 35:52it's all it's the same size. because
- 35:53it's aligned. Um, I can just copy over
- 35:56that uh title. And maybe I'll just go
- 36:00ahead and give this a four. Um, and
- 36:05existing interior
- 36:08photo.
- 36:10All right. So, all super easy. I could
- 36:12do this however many times I want. I
- 36:14could, you know, maybe I need to fit
- 36:16more pictures on here. All super easy.
- 36:20And I've also done our door and window
- 36:22schedule which um I just filled this in
- 36:25manually. It was super easy to do. Um so
- 36:28just each of these is a text box and I
- 36:31can easily just go and um you know copy
- 36:36[Music]
- 36:37uh all of these down and just create a
- 36:39new one. Um and I've gone through as
- 36:42well and uh added these tags to the
- 36:46proposed uh floor plan. So you can see
- 36:49that gate 101 um and that 102. Um so all
- 36:53really easy to do. All right. And so
- 36:55every project does require structural
- 36:57engineering drawings. And so um I'm
- 37:00going to show you how to bring those
- 37:01PDFs in here. I know I didn't do that
- 37:04with the site survey. Um and that was
- 37:06just something you know that I just
- 37:07decided to exclude. But if you want to
- 37:10show other other consultants drawings in
- 37:12the same set all through Rayon, that is
- 37:15also achievable. And so what I did is um
- 37:18I actually shared you know I exported my
- 37:21floor plans, elevations and building
- 37:23sections to uh DWG files and then I sent
- 37:26it to the structural engineer. Um I
- 37:28believe he uses uh Revit um and so he
- 37:31was able to import those DWG files um do
- 37:35his work and then he sent me back uh
- 37:37PDFs of the sheets that uh were
- 37:40required. And so I'll just go ahead and
- 37:42I'm going to stay within my paper space
- 37:44within all of my plot sheets, but I'm
- 37:46going to go ahead and uh import that
- 37:50PDF. Um, and so I'm going to go ahead
- 37:52and open this up. And we've got two
- 37:55sheets. Um, I'm going to keep this as uh
- 37:59images rather than vectors.
- 38:02I'll go ahead and import.
- 38:07And I know that these are 24x 36 in
- 38:12sheets. So I'll do 36 in.
- 38:18And I'll pick my insertion point. And
- 38:21it's that easy.
- 38:23I'm going to close that out. All right.
- 38:26Um, and what I actually want to do, I'm
- 38:28going to just create a new column. And
- 38:30I'm just going to include these in the
- 38:31set. So, I'll go ahead and just make
- 38:34sure everything is
- 38:38consistent.
- 38:41And that's all looking good. Um, and so
- 38:44right now, you know, we're seeing these
- 38:46here, but if I go over to my pages,
- 38:49these are not yet included here. And so,
- 38:52we need to create a page uh to include
- 38:55these. And so I'll just go over to my
- 38:57page tool and I'll just select that. And
- 39:02it also already knows that this is a
- 39:0424x36.
- 39:06And so I'll just hit the space bar to do
- 39:08this again.
- 39:10And that's all super easy. Um, and see
- 39:14those now showed up at the very bottom.
- 39:17Um, it just intelligently knew that this
- 39:19was in the right order. So that was all
- 39:21really easy to do.
- 39:23Um, and so I can come over to my sheet
- 39:25index and maybe eventually I want to
- 39:27separate this out and say like here's
- 39:29architectural and here's structural. But
- 39:32for now I'll just go ahead and add these
- 39:34two sheets as their own. So maybe this
- 39:38is 1.1 and S1.2. And I'm just making
- 39:42that up. I don't know exactly what they
- 39:44were. Um, and then I'll go over to my
- 39:46next column and I'll just call this
- 39:50structural.
- 39:51Maybe maybe I'll do structural plans and
- 39:55structural details, whatever those
- 39:57really uh wanted it to be. So, all super
- 40:00easy to include. Um, and now those two
- 40:03sheets are included in the set. They're
- 40:05included in the index. I can zoom out
- 40:08and see I've got my title sheets, my
- 40:11title 24, my floor plans, my diagrams
- 40:14down here, all my exteriors, um, my
- 40:18window schedule, and then all this
- 40:19structural
- 40:22And from here I can now go and actually
- 40:24export my whole drawing set. And so to
- 40:27do that, we're already over here on the
- 40:29pages pane. Um, and so I can go, you
- 40:32know, scroll through, make sure
- 40:33everything is in the right order. I can,
- 40:35you know, look through and be like, oh
- 40:37no, this is supposed to be above. And
- 40:39that's going to adjust everything, you
- 40:41know, the numbers through here. Um, and
- 40:43so I can make sure everything's correct.
- 40:45Um, and then I can, you know, say I just
- 40:47want to export the, uh, structural
- 40:49drawings. Um, I can just select those
- 40:51two and see up here it's saying just
- 40:53two. Um, or if I have nothing selected,
- 40:56it's going to show all 18 sheets. And
- 40:58again, once I hit export here, um, I can
- 41:02go and change the range or I can do all.
- 41:05Um, and I can zoom in, make sure
- 41:07everything is looking good. I can flip
- 41:09through the drawing set and see like,
- 41:13you know, is everything looking the way
- 41:14it's supposed to look? um including you
- 41:17know that really bad uh leader line that
- 41:20we created. Um and then I can go ahead
- 41:23and export this as a PDF or PNG. Um and
- 41:26it's all really easy. The other thing
- 41:28that I could do um is I can go up here
- 41:32and you know I can either preview this
- 41:34um or more likely I want to share. So, I
- 41:36can share as a presentation and then
- 41:39it's just a matter of clicking that and
- 41:41then I can copy this uh and send this
- 41:44link out to, you know, whether it's my
- 41:46client or a consultant, anybody. Um, and
- 41:50really what that's going to look like if
- 41:52I go over to the preview. Um, it's just
- 41:55going to show me basically a uh kind of
- 41:58slide deck of u my whole project. Um,
- 42:02and you can see here I actually got some
- 42:04order of the sheets wrong, but that's
- 42:06all super easy to to go ahead and
- 42:08correct. So, that's what's in my
- 42:09architectural drawing set for a typical
- 42:11building permit. Everything you've seen
- 42:13here was drawn or organized using Rayon
