- 0:10secion design movement.
- 0:15The secession [music] is the most
- 0:16successful provocation by vi architects
- 0:18and artists. It [music] blends early
- 0:21modernism and late art nuvo architecture
- 0:23like no other. The building's [music]
- 0:25stern white cubes boast goldplated
- 0:27laurel leaves, owls, and twirling lines
- 0:30topped with a giant globe of golden
- 0:32laurel. [music] Like the wiener
- 0:34secession movement spread across the
- 0:36city, Vienna's Art Novo gems light up
- 0:38[music] in various parts of the town. To
- 0:41get the whole story and see different
- 0:43sites, consider embarking [music] on a
- 0:45guided art nuvo walk with me. First,
- 0:49let's start with a brief history of the
- 0:51secession design movement [music] and
- 0:52its most famous representatives. All
- 0:54architectural movements throughout
- 0:56history have been spurred by societal
- 0:58shifts that demand a new style [music]
- 1:01that better reflects how technology has
- 1:03advanced the practice and how people
- 1:05express their political, religious, and
- 1:07moral beliefs and [music] practices.
- 1:09While some shifts occur over a period of
- 1:11several years, others are experienced as
- 1:14a sudden revolt. The [music] Vienna
- 1:16secession was undoubtedly the latter. At
- 1:19the end of the 19th century, [music] a
- 1:21group of artists and architects aimed to
- 1:22explore what art should be. It pertained
- 1:25to filtering global influences in a way
- 1:28that could introduce new modernism.
- 1:30[music] Collectively, the secessionists
- 1:32sparked a new movement that wasn't
- 1:34characterized by any one style,
- 1:36ubensteel or [music] youth style, which
- 1:39was inspired by Germany's adaptation of
- 1:41art nuvo. The vianese version also used
- 1:44[music] curving lines and references to
- 1:46plants and nature, but evolved to
- 1:48emphasize simple [music] geometric forms
- 1:50and decoration. A year after their
- 1:53founding, the group designed an
- 1:55exhibition to present their [music] work
- 1:57and that of other international artists
- 1:59they favored. The display grew global
- 2:01attention and was praised for its
- 2:03innovation in contemporary arts [music]
- 2:05architect Otto Wagner 1841 to 1918.
- 2:10combined traditional styles and art nuvo
- 2:13influences. [music]
- 2:14Later, architect Adolf Lewis 1870 to
- 2:181933 established [music] the stark
- 2:21minimalist style we see at the Goldman
- 2:23and Salish building. Eyebrows were
- 2:25raised when loose built this modern
- 2:28structure [music]
- 2:28across from the Imperial Palace in
- 2:30Vienna 1909
- 2:33and the loose house marked an important
- 2:35architectural [music] transition.
- 2:37Yet the buildings of Otto Wagner may
- 2:39have influenced this modernist movement.
- 2:43Some have called Otto column and Wagner
- 2:45the father of modern architecture. For
- 2:48certain this influential [music]
- 2:49Austrian helped move Vienna from
- 2:52Yugensteel.
- 2:54Vagner's influence on the architecture
- 2:57of Vienna is [music] felt everywhere in
- 3:00that city who in 1911 is said to have
- 3:03called Vagner [music] the greatest
- 3:05architect in the world. Today you will
- 3:08see the best places [music] to immerse
- 3:10yourself in the unique architecture of
- 3:12Vienna. This short list forms a small
- 3:15guide for art lovers. Let's start.
- 3:17[music] Majolica House/ Otovagner.
- 3:20An apartment building in Vienna. The
- 3:22Maggilica House designed by Ottovagner
- 3:25at the turn [music] of the 20th century
- 3:27emanates some of the most classic
- 3:28details of the art nuvo style. [music]
- 3:30The name of the building derives from
- 3:32the flowing flower motifs on the tiled
- 3:35outside [music] facade that embellished
- 3:37the place with beautiful shades of
- 3:40green, blue, and pink. An entire facade
- 3:43built of small ceramic tiles, also known
- 3:46as molica. [music]
- 3:47Other materials used in the exterior
- 3:49finishing include iron and [music]
- 3:51wooden frames for the windows in a
- 3:53perimeter block and infill building type
- 3:55lion heads sit in relief on the
- 3:57overhanging eve. and the two complexes
- 3:59[music]
- 4:00are separated by their zone of
- 4:02balconies. Wagner made this new [music]
- 4:05style of architecture famous for its
- 4:07simple yet elegant design. Exterior
- 4:09[music] walls were left smooth and flat
- 4:12and windows typically became less
- 4:14ordained [music] than in previous
- 4:15vianese styles of architecture. In some
- 4:18fashion, the simple clean look [music]
- 4:21was meant to represent how clean and
- 4:23simple the apartment complexes were on
- 4:26the inside. Despite its rectangular
- 4:28shape, [music] the beautifully
- 4:29maintained building is considered an art
- 4:31nuvo masterpiece. Complex in the center
- 4:34of [music] Vienna was initially rejected
- 4:36as hideous beyond measure. These
- 4:38apartments rest side by side [music] and
- 4:40together form an incomparably
- 4:42unparalleled and detailed. Nearby is a
- 4:45second house simpler than these at three
- 4:48costler [music] said to have been the
- 4:49town residence of Vagner. for a timetip
- 4:52visit on a bright day and take
- 4:54binoculars to fully appreciate the
- 4:56detail under the [music] eaves and the
- 4:58balcony areas.
- 5:00Medallion House
- 5:03known [music] as the medallion house
- 5:05because of its decor of gilded
- 5:07medallions by Wagner's student and
- 5:09frequent collaborator [music]
- 5:10column and Moser. This apartment block
- 5:12is adjacent to the Molica house on
- 5:14Lincoln's [music] aisle. Compared to the
- 5:16Molica's design where green, blue, and
- 5:19pink shades prevail where [music] gold
- 5:21is the master and the decorations adorn
- 5:24not only the front facade but given that
- 5:26the building is on a corner [music]
- 5:28the length of the other sides as well.
- 5:31The roof visible from far away features
- 5:33[music] several sculpted heads called
- 5:35the criers or the crying women by of
- 5:38Marchinkovitz who provided sculpture for
- 5:40other Vienna secession landmarks
- 5:42including the angels topping the
- 5:44postparkus [music]
- 5:45building as one of Europe's prime art
- 5:48nuvo jewels. The medallion house
- 5:50prominently features on a 100 gold coin.
- 5:53[music]
- 5:54Today it houses a branch of an Austrian
- 5:56bank. I am happy to make interesting
- 5:58releases for you and I will be grateful
- 6:01for your support of my [music] channel.
- 6:02Subscriptions, likes or comments will
- 6:04help me a lot. Secession [music] stop.
- 6:08Secession building. There was a time in
- 6:10the early 20th century when Vienna was
- 6:13the center of the [music] world for
- 6:15culture, the age of Gustav Clint's art.
- 6:18This building represents the time not
- 6:21only as a geographical location [music]
- 6:23but also in its architecture and no less
- 6:26notably the Batoan freeze painted by
- 6:28Clinton 1902 [music]
- 6:30as a commentary on Bvenan symphony
- 6:32number nine.
- 6:34[music]
- 6:35Artists were seceding from the
- 6:36conventional art world while the only
- 6:38actual painting inside is the famous
- 6:41freeze.
- 6:44[music]
- 6:44The building itself, designed by
- 6:46architect Joseph Ulch, contained several
- 6:49features acting as a unique statement
- 6:52[music] of intent from the turtles that
- 6:54support massive plant pots on either
- 6:57side of the entrance to the [music]
- 6:58great dome made from 2,500
- 7:02guilt laurel leaves and 300 plus berries
- 7:05[music] that the vianese were quick to
- 7:07christen the golden cabbage. Alrech
- 7:10wanted it to be seen as a dome of
- 7:12laurel, a subtle classical reference
- 7:14[music]
- 7:14meant to celebrate the triumph of art.
- 7:16Inside the museum has a minimalist
- 7:18approach to portraying the exhibitions,
- 7:20allowing [music] visitors to focus on
- 7:22the art. The atmosphere is calming and
- 7:24magical, encouraging [music] you to stop
- 7:26and quietly immerse yourself in the
- 7:28surroundings. Photos are allowed. Tip
- 7:30the audio guide is very useful here. It
- 7:33is much easier to sit and listen [music]
- 7:34as you look at each section than reading
- 7:36explanatory notes. Carl [music] Splat's
- 7:39stop Bond station.
- 7:42The master of vianese Jugensteel
- 7:45Ottovagner [music]
- 7:46was appointed architectural supervisor
- 7:48for much of the city's underground
- 7:49system in the 1890s [music]
- 7:51and the stylish pair of underground
- 7:53railway exit pavilions he designed next
- 7:55[music] to Carl's plat are among the
- 7:57city's most appealing buildings. Well
- 7:59known for their modern look, floral
- 8:01[music] motifs, curving roof lines, and
- 8:04exposed steel framework. In keeping with
- 8:06Vagner's belief in architectural
- 8:08honesty, they've achieved the perfect
- 8:10melding of form and function for the
- 8:13architectural [music] world, having
- 8:15opened to the general public in 1899.
- 8:18The original old line was converted to
- 8:21the [music] newer Ubon rail system in
- 8:23the 1980s. For this purpose, plans were
- 8:26made to destroy the old [music] stopped
- 8:28bomb station. However, a cry of outrage
- 8:32from the vianese community saved the two
- 8:34pavilions to make them function [music]
- 8:35as part of the modern rail system. They
- 8:37were first completely dismantled, then
- 8:40reassembled on a structure that was 7 ft
- 8:42taller than [music] before. The two
- 8:44pavilion face each other. One is [music]
- 8:47now a quirky cafe. The other hosts an
- 8:50exhibit on Vagner's [music] most famous
- 8:52work with a model of the architect's
- 8:54stunning church at Steinhoff [music] as
- 8:56its centerpiece. Tip around the Carl
- 8:59Plutz. You can also find the Grand
- 9:01University of Technology, [music]
- 9:03St. Charles Church, the Vienna City
- 9:05Museum. In the summer, Carl Plutz is a
- 9:08great place to sit under the trees of
- 9:10Russell Park. When Ottov Wagner [music]
- 9:13built himself a townhouse at Renwick
- 9:15three, in the 1890s, it was clearly
- 9:17still a desirable residence. Now known
- 9:19as the pallet oasan, [music] occupied by
- 9:22the Croatian embassy, this early vagner
- 9:24work is very much in the ringstrasa
- 9:25[music] style with its elaborate rot
- 9:28iron balconies and stucco decorations.
- 9:31Still, you can discern hints of his
- 9:33later work in touches [music] such as
- 9:35the projecting cornice and the very fine
- 9:38reliefs on the upper floor. Despite
- 9:40[music] its meteoric rise, the Vienna
- 9:42Secession changed over the years as its
- 9:45members began [music] to focus on their
- 9:47individual pursuits and artistic
- 9:49interest. Eventually, internal
- 9:51disagreements and the increase in
- 9:53consumerism distinguish [music] the
- 9:55movement. Regardless, the movement was a
- 9:57critical precedent that significantly
- 10:00contributed to [music] the rise of
- 10:01culture in Austria throughout the 20th
- 10:03century. Its memory is cemented in
- 10:05[music] the secessionist building.
- 10:07Climp's artwork including the kiss and
- 10:10Otto Vagner's Colats [music]
- 10:12metro station. The movement is even
- 10:15considered a moment of cultural [music]
- 10:16identity in Austria. In 2004, 100 years
- 10:21after the group dissolved, the country
- 10:23issued a cold collector's coin of 100.
- 10:26[music]
- 10:28The front featured the secession
- 10:30building and the back featured a [music]
- 10:32freeze by Clint. While we may never see
- 10:34a more powerful and sudden jolt in the
- 10:37way that architecture [music]
- 10:38transforms throughout time, we have the
- 10:41V in a secession to thank for opening
- 10:44the path for artists and architects
- 10:45[music]
- 10:46to introduce modernism as we know it.
- 10:49That's all for today. See you next week.
